The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Northwest Zone, has urged the federal government to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement.

The union cited outstanding welfare issues, controversial education policies, administrative irregularities, and insecurity in universities as bottleneck.

The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Northwest, which comprises 10 public universities, Prof. Abubakar Sabo, made the call at a press conference on Thursday in Sokoto.

Sabo said the position followed resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, from May 9 to 10.

He noted that in spite of the public presentation of the agreement in January this year, the federal government had failed to act.

He added that the Implementation Monitoring Committee, IMC, had not been constituted, and several federal and state universities were yet to fully implement the salary components of the agreement.

“On outstanding welfare issues, ASUU Sokoto Zone decries the non-payment of the 25-35% salary award, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls, unremitted third-party deductions, and the three months’ salary withheld during the 2022 ASUU strike,” he said.

The union also expressed concern over new education policies, including the reversal of the mother-tongue policy in early childhood education, the proposed establishment of a Coventry University campus in Nigeria, and plans to scrap certain courses in the humanities and social sciences.

Sabo further raised the alarm over rising cases of maladministration, lack of transparency, and irregular appointments in Nigerian universities.

On national issues, the union decried worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and political tensions affecting academic activities, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The zonal coordinator warned that ASUU might embark on industrial action if all diplomatic options were exhausted.

He therefore, appealed to patriotic Nigerians, parents, students, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support the struggle for functional and adequately funded public universities.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended a total of 16 suspects and recovered arms and other items in a series of coordinated operations across multiple theatres nationwide.

The announcement is contained in an operational report made available on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the report, the arrests and recoveries were recorded within the last 24 hours under ongoing operations, including Operation Fansan Yamma, Operation MESA, Operation Enduring Peace and Operation Udo Ka.

The report revealed that in the North-West, troops of 8 Division Garrison, under Operation Fansan Yamma raided a suspected terrorist logistics base in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto State.

It added that troops recovered a fabricated pistol loaded with 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and seized hard drugs, while 11 suspects were apprehended from identified hideouts during the operation.

“Similarly, troops of 1 Brigade Combat Team, responded swiftly to a distress call in Maru local government area of Zamfara, providing immediate intervention and medical evacuation for victims, thereby preventing further escalation.

“In Kebbi, troops of 8 Division Strike Force, while on patrol, successfully located and recovered the remains of a missing soldier, ensuring proper evacuation,” the report said.

It also revealed that troops in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and local security groups conducted coordinated raids on criminal hideouts in Owan East local government area of Edo.

According to the report, the operation led to the arrest of two suspects and recovery of weapons including machetes, a spear and a mobile phone used for criminal activities.

The report also said that the troops of 20 Model Battalion working with Defence Intelligence Agency operatives arrested one suspected gunrunner in Gassol local government area of Taraba.

According to the report the suspect was linked to the supply of 23 AK-47 rifles to a rogue vigilante leader in what officials described as a major breakthrough in efforts to curb illegal arms proliferation.

“Further successes were recorded in Plateau under Operation Enduring Peace, where troops foiled a cattle rustling attempt in a border community between Bassa and Jos South local government areas, forcing the armed group to abandon their mission.

“In the South-South, troops of 245 Battalion under Operation UDO KA intercepted one suspected criminal during a stop-and-search operation in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River.

“The suspect was found in possession of two locally made pistols. He has provided useful intelligence, with follow-up operations ongoing,” it added.

It was noted that the sustained successes underscored the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations, inter-agency collaboration and proactive deployment of troops across critical locations.

It added that efforts would be sustained to deny criminal elements freedom of action across the country.

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has said that Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 15.69 per cent in April 2026.

The NBS made this known in its Consumer Price Index, CPI, and Inflation Report for April 2026 released in Abuja on Friday.

According to the report, the figure represents a 0.31 percentage point increase from the 15.38 per cent recorded in March 2026.

It stated that on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate stood at 15.69 per cent compared to 26.82 per cent recorded in April 2025.

The report also showed that on a month-on-month basis, headline inflation in April stood at 2.13 per cent.

This, according to the NBS, was 2.05 percentage points lower than the 4.18 per cent recorded in March 2026.

“This means that in April 2026, the rate of increase in the average price level was lower than the rate recorded in March 2026,” the report stated.

It identified food and non-alcoholic beverages, restaurants and accommodation services, and transport as the major contributors to headline inflation on a year-on-year basis.

The report said the Consumer Price Index increased to 138.3 in April from 135.4 recorded in March 2026.

Food inflation stood at 16.06 per cent year-on-year in April 2026 compared to 24.68 per cent recorded in April 2025.

On a month-on-month basis, food inflation stood at 3.63 per cent in April, lower than the 4.17 per cent recorded in March.

The NBS attributed the rise in food prices to increases in the cost of millet, yam flour, ginger, beef, garri, beans, tomatoes and other staple food items.

The report said core inflation, which excludes volatile agricultural produce and energy prices, stood at 15.86 per cent year-on-year in April.

This represented a decline from the 26.05 per cent recorded in April 2025.

On a month-on-month basis, core inflation stood at 1.03 per cent in April, compared to 4.03 per cent in March.

The report further showed that urban inflation stood at 15.40 per cent year-on-year, while rural inflation stood at 16.36 per cent.

According to the NBS, Sokoto recorded the highest year-on-year headline inflation rate at 25.74 per cent, followed by Bauchi and Zamfara.

Edo recorded the lowest year-on-year inflation rate at 5.91 per cent, followed by Borno and Jigawa.

The report added that Enugu recorded the highest year-on-year food inflation rate at 32.67 per cent, followed by Kwara and Adamawa.

No fewer than 34 persons have died out of 254 infected in a meningitis outbreak across nine local government areas of Sokoto State, raising concerns among health authorities and residents.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruk Abubakar-Wurno, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Sokoto, noting that the outbreak had spread across multiple communities, prompting urgent government response efforts.

Abubakar-Wurno said most of the deaths occurred at home before government intervention, as many residents attributed the illness to spiritual beliefs or mysterious circumstances, delaying early treatment and proper medical attention.

He said isolation centres were established in Dogondaji and Kurawa communities in Tambuwal and Sabon Birni local government areas, adding that all 201 persons treated at government health facilities had been discharged.

He listed affected local government areas as Dange-Shuni (26), Kebbe (16), Shagari (51), Tambuwal (34), Wamakko (60), Sabon Birni (63), Bodinga (2), Kware ( 2) and Gada (1) respectively.

According to him, 24 samples were sent for testing, out of which 16 returned negative results, while eight cases of meningitis were confirmed, indicating the presence of the disease in communities.

He explained that meningitis was a serious infection affecting membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, spreading through respiratory droplets during close contact, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated environments.

He said the government had intensified awareness campaigns, urging residents to sleep in well-ventilated rooms or outside house compounds to reduce disease spread, often worsened by extreme heat conditions.

Abubakar-Wurno emphasised that children aged one to 15 were most affected, while overcrowding and seasonal dry winds significantly increased transmission risks, raising serious public health concerns across northern states.

He added that the government had intensified surveillance through disease surveillance officers, ensured laboratory testing and medication provision, while also strengthening laboratory capacity for improved detection and confirmation of cases.

Meningitis remains a major public health concern in Nigeria, particularly during dry seasons, with northern states most affected, according to WHO and surveillance data.

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has said Nigeria’s headline inflation rate rose to 15.38 per cent in March 2026.

The NBS disclosed this in its Consumer Price Index, CPI, and Inflation Report for March 2026, released in Abuja on Wednesday.

The report stated that the March headline inflation rate showed an increase of 0.32 per cent compared to the February 2026 headline inflation rate of 15.06 per cent.

“On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate for March 2026 stood at 15.38 per cent, when compared to the 15.06 per cent and 27.35 per cent recorded in February 2026 and March 2025, respectively.”

Furthermore, the report said on a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate in March 2026 was 4.18 per cent, which was 2.17 per cent higher than the rate recorded in February 2026 at 2.01 per cent.

“This means that in March 2026, the rate of increase in the average price level was higher than the rate of increase in the average price level in February 2026.”

It said that the three major contributors to the headline inflation year- on- year were food and non-alcoholic beverages at 5. 55 per cent, restaurants and accommodation services at 3.26 per cent, and transport at 1.80 per cent.

The report said that the least contributors were recreation, sports, and culture at 0.00per cent, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and narcotics at 0.02 per cent, and insurance and financial services at 0.02 per cent.

It said that the CPI increased to 135.4 in March 2026, and reflected a 5.4-point increase from the 130.0 recorded in February.

The report said the food inflation rate in March 2026 was 14.31 per cent on a year-on-year basis, compared to the rate recorded in March 2025 at 25.22 per cent.

It said that on a month-on-month basis, the food inflation rate in March 2026 was 4.17 per cent, which decreased by 0.52 per cent compared to the 4.69 per cent recorded in February.

The NBS attributed the decrease in food inflation on a month-on-month basis to the rate of change in the average prices of yams, ginger (fresh), cassava tuber, and groundnuts (shelled).

“Others are Irish potato, and ogbono/apon (dried ungrinded), tomatoes,(fresh), cassava flour sold loose, among others.”

The report said, “All items less farm produces and energy” or core inflation, which excludes the prices of volatile agricultural produce and energy, stood at 16.21 per cent in March, on a year-on-year basis.

This shows a decline of 10.91 percentage points when compared to the 25.12 per cent recorded in March 2025.

“On a month-on-month basis, the core inflation rate was 4.03 per cent in March, which increased by 3.14 per cent compared to the 0.89 per cent recorded in February.”

The report said that the inflation rate of the sub-indices for March 2026 on a month-on-month basis showed that energy stood at 6.6 per cent, farm produce at 4.6 per cent, services at 2.6 per cent, goods at 5.5 per cent and imported food at 1.1 per cent.

It said that on a year-on-year basis in March 2026, the urban inflation rate was 14.64 per cent.

“On a month-on-month basis, the urban inflation rate was 3.16 per cent, which increased by 0.61 per cent compared to February at 2.55 per cent.”

The report said that in March 2026, rural inflation rate was 17.22 per cent on a year-on-year basis.

“On a month-on-month basis, the rural inflation rate was 6.73 per cent, which increased by 6.02 per cent compared to February at 0.71 per cent.”

On states’ profile analysis, the report showed that in March, the all-items index inflation rate on a year-on-year basis was highest in Bayelsa at 27.37 per cent, followed by Sokoto at 26.03 and Bauchi at 23.67 per cent.

It said that the lowest rise in headline inflation on a year-on-year basis was recorded in Osun at 5.25 per cent, followed by Kano at 9.85 per cent and Kaduna at 10.38 per cent.

However, the report said that in March 2026, the inflation rate on a month-on-month basis was highest in Zamfara at 10.77 per cent, followed by Bauchi at 9.37 per cent and Sokoto at 9.05 per cent.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has warned that no fewer than 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, will experience flooding in 2026, with 14,118 communities identified as high-risk nationwide.

Utsev gave the warning in Abuja on Wednesday at the public presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook, AFO, by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA.

He said the high-risk communities were located in 266 local government areas based on scientific forecasts and hydrological assessments.

The affected states, according to him are Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna and Kano.

Others include Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara, including the FCT.

The minister said that 15,597 communities in 405 local government areas across 35 states would face moderate flood risk, while Ekiti remained the only state not affected.

He added that 923 communities in 77 local government areas across 24 states fell within the low flood risk category.

“States in this category include Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara,” he said.

He warned of possible flash and urban flooding in major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kano.

He said coastal and riverine flooding was expected in Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and Ondo due to rising sea levels and tidal surges.

”The AFO is not just a scientific report; it is a call to action. Early warning saves lives and reduces economic losses,” he emphasised.

Utsev attributed increasing flood incidents to climate variability, rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage infrastructure and poor land-use practices.

He revealed that the federal government was strengthening hydrological monitoring through improved data systems, automated river gauges and advanced modelling techniques.

He added that collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, were being enhanced to improve forecast accuracy and early warning dissemination.

The minister urged state governments to integrate flood risk considerations into land-use planning, urban development and infrastructure design.

He also called for improved drainage systems, effective floodplain management and stronger community preparedness to minimise impacts.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said flooding remained a major national challenge, with recurring incidents recorded since 2012.

Tinubu said his administration had initiated policies and programmes, including flood control projects, to address the persistent threat.

He said that the 2024 Maiduguri flood marked a turning point toward proactive flood and disaster management.

According to him, the Anticipatory Action initiative, led by the Office of the Vice-President, is strengthening early warning, preparedness and coordinated response.

Tinubu described the AFO as a key planning document guiding early action, mitigation and evacuation strategies nationwide.

He urged stakeholders to utilise the forecasts to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure.

The president also emphasised the need to harness water resources to drive economic diversification and sustainable development.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NIHSA, Umar Mohammed, said the forecast was based on comprehensive, data-driven analysis of flood-prone areas.

Mohammed said the AFO served as an early warning tool to support planning and coordinated disaster response nationwide.

He added that the agency had upgraded its forecasting system to a hybrid AI-integrated model to improve accuracy and lead time.

He also said that the Flood Dashboard now enabled real-time monitoring and dissemination of alerts to stakeholders.

He urged residents in vulnerable areas to heed early warnings and adopt preventive measures to reduce risks.

The NIHSA director general called for wider dissemination of the outlook to strengthen preparedness and resilience in communities.

He appreciated the federal government and development partners for their support in the preparation of the 2026 outlook.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the World Meteorological Organisation, NiMet, NEMA, the Minister of Livestock Development, Dr Idi Maiha, and other stakeholders.

Operational updates made available indicate that the military had sustained gains in the last 24 hours across theatres.

In Plateau, the reports said troops of Operation Enduring Peace neutralised three terrorists during an ambush in Wase local government area and foiled an attack on civilians in Shendam, where injured victims were evacuated.

In Borno, it revealed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai thwarted an attempted improvised explosive device, IED, attack along the Konduga–Kawuri Road, neutralising two terrorists and recovering weapons.

According to the report, troops also arrested a suspected terrorist kingpin in Toungo, Adamawa, linked to kidnapping and attacks on security forces, as well as three logistics suppliers and a suspected kidnapper in Borno.

“Under Operation Fansan Yamma, troops rescued 10 kidnap victims in separate operations in Sokoto and Katsina, while also arresting five suspected cattle rustlers in Kebbi and recovering livestock.

“In the South-East, troops recovered and safely detonated four improvised explosive devices in Abia, while arresting suspected cultists and gunrunners in Cross River and Ebonyi states.

“In the Niger Delta, troops intercepted vandalised materials and a vehicle conveying about 900 litres of illegally refined petroleum products in Rivers,” it stated.

The report further revealed that security agencies intervened in a communal clash between Afo natives and Fulani herders in Nasarawa State to prevent escalation.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised dozens of armed bandits in the notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji, camp.

The hideouts are in Fakai community in Shinkafi and Isa local government areas of Zamfara and Sokoto states.

A source in the Nigerian Army, who pleaded for anonymity, told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Monday that the success was recorded during a fierce gun battle as part of the routine operation against banditry activities in the areas.

According to security sources, the operation was led by the 8 Division Strike Force of the Nigerian Army Sokoto, and it commenced at early hours on March 20, targeting Turji’s camp deep inside Kagara Forest.

The source disclosed that during the advance operation, two combat support vehicles developed mechanical faults near Maberaya Village in Isa local government area of Sokoto State, prompting a temporary halt in the troops’ movement.

The source said it was at that moment that heavily armed bandits from Turji’s camp launched an ambush, using high grounds and forested areas for cover.

“However, the troops swiftly responded with superior firepower, engaging the bandits and eliminating several of them in the encounter.

“Three soldiers and one personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) sustained injuries during the skirmish and were promptly evacuated to the 8 Division Military Hospital Sokoto for treatment,” the source added.

In a similar vein, the source described the report of 150 bandits involved in a boat mishap and died in a river in Sokoto as a false report.

“The news circulating that over 150 bandits drowned in a boat mishap in Sabon Gida area is a fake report,” the source said.

The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Area Manager in Sokoto, Mr Bello Bala, also confirmed that the report was fake, adding that the River Sabon Gida area is currently not navigable.

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, has arrested 39 suspects who allegedly fled Sokoto State and relocated into forest reserves in the state.

Mr Adetunji Adeleye, State Commander of Amotekun, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Akure while parading the suspects and 22 others arrested for various criminal offences in the state.

Adeleye said the 39 suspects arrested were fleeing to Ondo State after the recent United States–backed military strike against ISIS terrorists in Northern Nigeria.

“A couple of days ago, the 39 suspects were apprehended together at Elegbeka axis in Ose Local Government Area, a notorious security flashpoint where the Olufon of Ifon was murdered some years ago.

“They claimed they relocated into the forests due to the strike on them in the northern part of the country.

“Elegbeka is a long-standing black spot for criminal activities, and it is the reason Amotekun established a permanent control post inside the forest to curb kidnapping and armed robbery.

“For anyone to stay in our forest areas, the government has made it clear that such a person must obtain permits. The sudden influx of these elements raises serious questions,” he noted.

According to him, the suspects were not trekking when we arrested them, but were hibernating inside the forest, with vehicles parked far away from their hideout.

“We trapped them and brought them together. We are still profiling them but those found with incriminating materials will surely be prosecuted.

“The arrests are part of the agency’s ember-month security operations, which involves officers deployed on four major operations across Ondo State.

“As we round off the ember-month patrol, which ends tomorrow, we have arrested about 100 suspects, out of which 61 are on parade today.

“A breakdown of the offences showed that 50 suspects were arrested for breach of law and order, two suspects for anti-open grazing violations.

“Six suspects were also arrested for kidnapping-related offences while three suspects were arrested for rape and gender-based violence,” the commander said.
