Police in Lagos State are on a manhunt for the buyer of a baby stolen by a house help in Shomolu area of the state.

Police spokesman in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed on Monday that the buyer abandoned the baby as the police dragnet was closing in.

“In the early hours of Monday, the buyer abandoned the baby at Alade Market, Shomolu, because of intense manhunt and pressure from the police.

“The baby was promptly rescued by the police. She has been handed over to her parents after they positively identified her,’’ Hundeyin stated.

An X user, simply identified as @Simmm_K raised alarm in a Saturday post that a house help absconded with the baby belonging to her boss.

“A house help ran away with my colleague’s baby this Saturday morning between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. in Shomolu,’’ the X user posted.

@Simmm_K, who shared the picture of the teenage house help and the baby, appealed to the police and members of the public to help to find the baby.

She also posted a telephone number to be reached whenever or wherever the house help or baby was found.

She later updated the post stating that the house help had been arrested at Ikorodu, but without the baby.

According to Simmm_K, the house help confessed to have sold the baby for N800,000.

Simmm_K further updated her post that the baby had been found in the early hours on Monday.

“I’m glad to notify everyone that the baby was found this morning at Shomolu.

“Many thanks to everyone and the police for helping. The baby is united with the family,’’ she posted.

Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Baci, will display her world-beating culinary skills in Lagos on Friday, July 14, to raise funds for a widow.

Baci’s dishes will be tasted in an initiative by Joseph Edgar, The Duke of Shomolu, to assist widows and empower them to be self-reliant.

Edgar, Chief Executive Officer of Duke of Shomolu Productions, a theatrical play producing outfit, disclosed this on Sunday.

He said that Baci was expected to display her “mesmerising skills which enamoured the world and saw her emerge as the Guinness record holder in a bid to raise N1 million for a widow.”

He said that the initiative, which had been running for the last three years, had raised more than N10 million for deserving widows.

“The initiative involves very close friends and associates of The Duke of Shomolu, donating cash instead of gifts to mark his birthdays.

“The cash gifts are then sent to needy widows, who would have been nominated by members of the public.

“Last year, N2 million was donated to four deserving widows by the friends and associates of the Duke of Shomolu.

“This year, N3 million was raised with the winner, who got N1 million, nominated by a director at Keystone Bank, Mr Yemi Odusanya, who incidentally shares same birthday with the Duke.”

Edgar himself chose 10 other widows from among the close to 100 nominees who shared N1million.

He said that Baci would be cooking for 10 people at the Ivy Hotel at Emerald in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

According to him, the sum of N1 million will be donated to a widow of her choice.

He said that Prothrive Astute Heights Ltd., makers of Grandios Pap, would sponsor the event as part of its social responsibility.

Deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has vowed to continue to speak and air his views to defend and rebuild Nigeria.

Sanusi, who is also the current Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria, made the vow in Abuja on Saturday at a stage play titled “Emir Sanusi: Truth in Time.’’

The play was written by Prof. Ahmed Yerima, a professor of Drama at the Redeemer University and produced by Executive Chairman, Duke of Somolu Productions, Mr Joseph Edgar.

The 14th emir said he had what it took to contribute to nation building because of his long history of service to the country.

He said he served as Chief Risk Officer at the United Bank for Africa, and at First Bank, and also as CBN governor; as Emir of Kano for six years and Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria.

Sanusi argued that he would be ungrateful to God if he expressed regret or sadness over his removal as emir in spite of positions he occupied in life.

“I don’t think that God has taken anything away from me. So, I have no regret.

“I turned 61 years last year and in those years, I had the honour of having been the Chief Risk Officer at United Bank for Africa (UBA) and the Chief Risk Officer at First Bank.

“I was Governor of Central Bank, Emir of Kano and now Khalifah, Tijaniyat Movement of Nigeria.

“If I have sadness, then I’m ungrateful. How many people have had the opportunity to be just one of those things?’’ he observed.

Sanusi added that many traditional rulers held leadership positions such as army generals, governors, Nigeria Customs chief and others before their appointment as traditional rulers.

According to him, these traditional rulers gave their bits to serve this country.

“We have a long history of service to this country. My father as first Director-General of Nigeria Intelligence Agency set up the agency in1960, the record is there to see.

“My parents, grandparents and great grandparents gave their lives to build this country.

“We will continue to devote energy to build this country. It doesn’t belong to anyone; it belongs to all of us,’’ Emir Sanusi stressed.

He said if he had a choice between sacrificing his principles and holding on to position, he would give up the position.

“History is always the best judge. The things that I said would happen, that caused me so much trouble, have happened.

“For me, I have absolutely no regret and I will continue to speak and voice my views. I will continue to defend this country,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the playwright, Yerima said what motivated him to write the play was when Lamido was appointed as Emir, he prayed: “O Allah, let me die on the throne.’’

He said he wanted people to watch how destiny prevailed on Sanusi’s grandfather, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi who spent 10 years before he was removed and Sanusi, the grand son who spent six years before he was also removed.

“Also, they lived and live in a society. So, we want viewers to see the society’s attitudes towards their service to humanity,’’ he said.

The producer of the play, Edgar said it was the 14th edition produced by Duke of Somolu Productions.

“With a budget in excess of N40 million, this production is truly historical,’’ he said.

Edgar thanked the more than 35 sponsors of the play who took over 50 per cent of the budget for their support.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was dethroned as Emir of Kano in March 2020 by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, citing “total disrespect to lawful instructions from the Office of the Governor’’.

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Mr. Tokunbo Abiru, on his emergence as the Senator-elect for Lagos East Senatorial District.

The governor also congratulated the APC candidate for Kosofe State Constituency II, Mr. Obafemi Saheed, who emerged victorious in last Saturday’s by-election.

According to the results announced by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday, Abiru defeated his opponent by wide margin in all the five local government areas in the senatorial district, polling a total of 89,204 votes against his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi, who secured 11,257 votes.

Saheed polled 12,494 votes to beat his rival, Mr. Sikiru Alebiosu of PDP who got 2,068 votes in Kosofe II Constituency.

Governor Sanwo-Olu in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said APC’s victory with wide margin in the by-elections was a sound testament to the confidence the people of Lagos State had in the All Progressives Congress.

The governor commended the electorate for coming out to perform their civic responsibilities and for voting in large numbers for the two candidates put forward by the APC.

He also appreciated chieftains of the party and members for working assiduously for the victory during the polls.

He said: “I want to congratulate Mr. Tokunbo Abiru and Obafemi Saheed on their victory in last Saturday’s by-elections in Lagos East Senatorial district and Kosofe State Constituency II polls. Your emergence as federal and state lawmakers is a validation of peoples’ confidence in our dear party, the APC.

“Right from the commencement of the process, we never doubted that Tokunbo Abiru and Obafemi Saheed would win the elections based on their credibility and the massive campaigns in all the nooks and crannies of Kosofe II Constituency and Lagos East Senatorial District.

“The victory of the two candidates of our party in the by-elections clearly showed that APC remains a party to beat in Lagos, based on her achievements in the State since the beginning of the current political dispensation in 1999.

“The successive administrations in Lagos have put the people at the centre of its action, resulting in several people-oriented programmes. This has continued to manifest in the voting patterns in the State.”

The governor advised the two newly elected lawmakers to continue with the tradition of excellent representation that Lagos legislators are known for.
