There is need for secondary school students to leverage technology to achieve success in the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, a seasoned management, marketing, and education-sector professional, Mr. Gbenga Ogunleye, has advised.

Ogunleye who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Toga Royal Nigeria Limited, made the call on Wednesday at the seminar organised by LABASCO Old Students Association for students of the Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos.

The event which had the president of 1984 set of LABASCO Old Students Association, Mr. Benjamin Akindele Ojo, as coordinator was the second in a series and designed to prepare Senior Secondary School 3 students for WASSCE.

Ogunleye who was the Guest Speaker, spoke on the topic, “Using Technology the Right Way to Pass WASSCE.”

He stressed that success in the final year examination would belong to students who combined hard work with intelligent use of technology.

He posited that although almost all the students in secondary schools had access to smart phones, they had not been using technology wisely as they concentrated more on social media contents not helpful to their success in examinations.

He said rather than access past questions and other education materials, they deployed the smart phones to other things, thus causing distraction.

Urging them to use it to practise past questions daily, understand difficult concepts and identify learning weaknesses early, he warned that technology amplified discipline, but did not replace it.

His words: “Today, examination success is no longer determined only by classroom teaching or hours spent reading. Around the world, outcomes are increasingly shaped by access to digital learning tools, intelligent revision systems, and technology-supported teaching methods.

“The central question is no longer whether students should use technology. The real question is: are we using technology strategically enough to improve learning outcomes?”

The guest speaker called on the students to combine hard work with intelligent use of technology as represented by their smart phones to achieve success in their examinations.

Ogunleye also spoke on the need for governments, parents and communities to provide the necessary support for the success of the students.

“If government provides infrastructure, educators provide mentorship, parents provide discipline, and communities provide support, then examination excellence will become predictable — not accidental.

“Let us commit today to building not just smart classrooms, but smart learners prepared for examinations, innovation, and leadership,” he declared.

The event which was well attended by parents, staff and old students was chaired by the Chairman, Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Mr. Akinola Abiodun Idowu.

The LCDA boss, at the occasion, announced plans by his administration to build a Computer Based Test Centre in Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos, within the next one year.

According to him, the facility will be of 250 systems minimum capacity and will be supplied with internet.

The organisers enjoyed the support of the Principal of the school, Mrs. Modupe Shofela, teachers and non-teaching staff of the school.

The seminar with the theme, “Empowering Minds for a Transformed Future: The Legacy of Learning and Leadership,” featured presentation of papers by different resource persons who are old students of the school.

The first speaker, Muhammad Quieyaz Adebayo, spoke on the topic, “Beyond WAEC: Character That Secures Your Future”; the second resource person, Mr. Yinka Sonuga spoke on “Integrity in Examination: Choosing the Right Path”; the third resource person, Mrs. Funsho Fakorede, spoke on “The Influence of Parents and Guardians on WAEC Success” while the fourth resource person, Mr. Ademola Abiodun, spoke on “Peer Review, Not Peer Distraction: The Smart Path to WAEC Success”.

The Master of Ceremony was an old student and renowned medical practitioner, Dr Aina Olufemi Odusola, while renowned journalist, Publisher of FrontPage, a leading online newspaper, Mr. Sakibu Olokojobi, gave the vote of thanks at the occasion.

The government made the call just as it commended the old students association of Lagos Baptist Secondary Schoool, LABASCO, for its consistent support of the alma mater.

The latest in a series of interventions by the alumni in Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, LBSS, is a special seminar for Senior Secondary School 3, SSS3, students, the teachers and parents.

The well-attended seminar was held on Thursday at the school premises to sensitise students, teachers and parents ahead of the coming West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, and other related ones.

The state government was represented by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Prince Adebowale Adeoye Bashir.

Speaking at the occasion on behalf of the Tutor General, the Director and Head of Unit Examinations, Mr. Sanni Olakunle Taiwo, expressed gratitude over the unrelenting support the school had enjoyed from the old students.

He said it was indeed remarkable that the old students were conscious of the fact that the government alone could not provide everything required for maximum functioning of schools.

While giving assurance of the commitment of the state government to continue to improve the level of education in all ways, its priority, the Tutor General urged the old students not to rest on their oars.

The principal of the school, Mrs. Modupe Shofela, who was highly excited expressed gratitude to the old students, declaring that the school was very fortunate to have them.

According to her, the commitment of the old students to give back to their alma mater was exemplary.

Mr. Akindele, Benjamin Ojo of the 1984 set, who chaired the seminar organising committee, disclosed that the essence of the event was to challenge the students, parents and teachers ahead of the coming examination.

His words: “We were dismayed when our alma mater was red-lagged by WAEC due to examination malpractices.  It was a low moment for us as ex-students, and we promised to get involved and return the school to its glorious past.”

Akindele added: “We expect our students to respond with discipline, hard work and excellence.  We urge you to make us proud by passing your exams with flying colours, displaying dignity and respect, and upholding the values that our institution represents.”

The seminar featured six resource persons who are old students of the school and had made their mark in different fields.

The first session was handled by a prominent medical doctor, Dr. Aina Odusola, with the topic: “Overcoming Examination Anxiety and Pressure, and Academic Integtrity and its Importance.

The second session was by a renowned educationist, Mrs. Funsho Bolawole.

The topic of her session is: “The Role of Teachers in Academic Excellence: Teacher-Students Relationships and Mentorship.”

The third session was by a school proprietress, Mrs. Folake Joseph.

She spoke on “Recognising and Addressing Signs of Academic Struggle and Fostering a Mindset in Your Child.”

The fourth session was handled by the MD/EiC of FrontPage (frontpageng.com), Mr. Sakibu Olokojobi.

He spoke on “Building Resilience and Perseverance.”

Mr. Alaka Abayomi handled the fifth session with the title, “Goal Setting and Time Management.”

The sixth session was by Apostle (Dr.) Bolaji Akinyemi, with the topic, “Civic Responsibility and Community Engagement and the Role of Technology in Education.”

The students, teachers and parents at the occasion expressed gratitude for the timely intervention which they considered very useful for all.

The Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale gave the applause on behalf of the state government on Thursday at the inauguration of the multi-million Naira interlocking of the assembly ground of the school carried out by the old students in the Diaspora.

The interlocked assembly ground has flowers planted in some strategic positions, adding to its beauty and creating a conducive environment.

The newly inaugurated facility is one of many interventions carried out by the old students, especially, the 1982 and 1984 sets.

The Tutor General said the government was well aware of all the contributions of the old students to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege.

“No alumni have done half of what you have done,” he declared.

“We thank you sincerely for all you have done.  We are not taking them for granted,” he added.

The Tutor General emphasized the importance of the interventions of the old students, asserting that government alone could not shoulder the responsibilities of providing all the required facilities for good education.

He therefore urged the old students to do more to support the government.

He advised that beyond providing infrastructure, the old students should mentor the students as that would also contribute to their success and growth in life.

Prince Bashir Adebowale spoke about the efforts of the Lagos State government towards improving the educational standard in Lagos through the allocation of the largest budget to education, to the envy of other ministries.

He said the decision of the government to give education the largest budget was in pursuit of the determination to make Lagos a centre of excellence in the education sector, not only in Nigeria, but Africa.

He said the efforts were already yielding fruits as students and teachers of Lagos schools, particularly in District 1, to which Lagos Baptist Secondary School belongs, have won several laurels even beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“Schools in District 1 have been doing well, year in year out,” the Tutor General declared.

Earlier in his welcome address at the occasion, the Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of FrontPage (online newspaper), Mr. Sakibu Olokojobi, who spoke for members of the old students in the Diaspora, called on the state government to do more for the school.

He reasoned that with the number of interventions carried out by the old students, the least the government could do to encourage them was to do more for Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, in terms of structure and recreational facilities.

His words: “We are aware of the support this school has enjoyed from the government. But have we got enough of government’s support?! No! The government can do more through its Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS, headed by Mr. Hakeem Smith…

“We like to use this opportunity to tell the governor and Mr. Smith that they should please shift attention to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege.  We have enough ground for a good and standard football field, race tracks, lawn tennis court and more.”

While speaking at the occasion, the principal of the school, Mrs Shofela Florence Modupe, expressed sincere gratitude to the old students.

He said they had been of immense support to the success of the school in different ways, praying God Almighty to increase His blessings in the lives.

She was also full of praises for the Tutor General saying that his support had been invaluable and source of the feats achieved by the school.

The Tutor General declared the assembly ground open for use.

A high point of the occasion was the school’s award to Engr. Rafiu Atolagbe, who single-handedly settled the accumulated electricity bill of the school and provided mult-million naira solar-powered electricity for the school.

The 1982 and 1984 sets of the old students were also presented with awards in appreciation of their kind gesture through laudable projects.

Mrs. Kemi Okoh (1982 set) was particularly commended at the occasion by all for her leading role in the actualisation of the project of interlocking the assembly ground which was inaugurated.

It would be recalled that in 2022, the 1982 set on the occasion of their 40 years anniversary of leaving school renovated some classrooms and provided some education facilities in the Lagos Baptist Senior College arm of the school.

Similarly, the 1984 set of the old students, some weeks ago carried out the renovation of the school’s laboratory and provided necessary equipment.

The compere at the occasion was Apostle Bolaji Akinyemi while the 1984 set of the old students was led by its current president, Mr. Benjamin Akindele.

The occasion was well attended by members of the 1982 and 1984 sets.
