No fewer than four persons were killed in a stampede during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms at Kofar-Guga quarters, Katsina, the state’s Police command has confirmed.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Aliyu Abubakar, described the incident as regrettable.

“The Police Command in Katsina regrets to report a stampede incident that occurred during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms at Kofar-Guga quarters, resulting in several people sustaining injuries,” it said on Sunday.

According to him, on February 26, 2026, at about 9 p.m., a distress call was received at the Central Police Station in Katsina about a large crowd gathered at the residence of a philanthropist, situated at Kofar-Guga quarters, Katsina, resulting in a stampede incident.

“Upon receipt of the report, promptly, a team of policemen responded to the scene.

“The rescuers rushed the victims to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

“Unfortunately, four of the injured later succumbed to their injuries.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Shehu, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery as he directed for further investigation and necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.

He, however, said that the command was calling on individuals who wished to distribute alms to the public to notify the command for adequate security coverage, so as to ensure safety of lives and property and orderliness during such events to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the killing of three suspected bandits, and the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Rimi local government area, CSP Muhammad Sani-Kabir, during a gun battle on Friday.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Aliyu Abubakar, on Friday in Katsina.

He said that: “Today, Feb. 13, 2026, at about 02:00 p.m., some suspected bandits, armed with dangerous weapons shooting sporadically, attacked Magaje Village, Rimi LGA, and rustled a number of animals and escaped the scene before the arrival of police operatives.

“Upon receipt of the report, quickly, the DPO Rimi, in collaboration with neighbouring divisions, and the Military, mobilised operatives and responded to the scene.

“The team successfully tracked and intercepted the suspected bandits at Magaje village, where a gun duel ensued.”

He revealed that the team successfully recovered all the rustled animals and neutralised three suspected bandits.

The PPRO, however, revealed that “regrettably, the DPO was fatally shot by the bandits, and one policeman sustained a gunshot injury to his hand.

“The injured officer has been rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention and is responding to treatment.”

The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, Mr Bello Shehu, while commending the act of valour and camaraderie displayed by the joint security team, condemned the unfortunate incident.

He also mourned the officer, describing him as an upright, honest, and professional police officer.

Shehu condoled the immediate family and friends of the deceased officer.

The International Press Institute, IPI, a global body committed to protecting press freedom and the free flow of information, has raised concern over the recent cases of media repression in the country.

Mr Musikilu Mojeed, President, IPI Nigeria, raised the alarm at a dinner organised by the institute, to honour one of its members and a retired Director, Digital Media, Voice of Nigeria (VON) Hajia Hadiza Hussaina Sani, in Abuja on Saturday.

The dinner was organised to honour the media icon for her dedication and service, after clocking mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

The identical twin sister of the celebrator, Hajia Ameena Hassana Sani, equally retired meritoriously from the service of the agency, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, as a Director.

Speaking at the event, Mojeed, Editor-in-Chief, Premium Times, cited the recent “disturbing” instances of banning of live political programme in Kano State and the arrest of journalists in Ekiti and Niger states.

“Akwa Ibom State Government recently evicted Channels TV crew, a journalist and a cameraman, from the press centre inside Government House, Uyo.

“The repressive action was taken over the publication of a video clip where the governor, eventually confirmed he is defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“A journalist in Kebbi State, Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, was also detained after exposing neglect in a hospital.

“A former “This day” employee, Azuka Ogujiuba, was reportedly arrested and harassed by the Police for doing his job.

“Every single day you wake up, it is one form of harassment or the other against the media,” he said.

Mojeed called for continued advocacy and activism to protect press freedom and promote independent journalism.

READ ALSO: A visit to the Olunloyo’s at Ibadan…, By Bolanle Bolawole

He stressed that efforts to protect journalists’ rights and promote independent journalism are crucial in Nigeria’s media landscape.

Mojeed said Sani’s retirement came at a critical time when the media sector in Nigeria was facing numerous challenges, including harassment, arrests, and censorship.

He noted Sani’s significant contributions to IPI Nigeria, including her role in organising its World Congress as well as her active participation in various committees.

He commended her commitment to promoting press freedom, independent journalism, and the safety of journalists.

Mojeed appealed to the celebrator to continue advocating for press freedom and supporting the work of IPI Nigeria, emphasising that her expertise and experience were invaluable to the organisation.

The Director-General, VON, Mallam Jibrin Ndace, expressed gratitude to IPI Nigeria for recognising Sani’s contributions, stating that the gesture also reflected positively on the entire VON team.

He described Sani as a professional journalist who seamlessly transitioned from traditional journalism to modern digital practices, leading the digital department with innovations and skills.

According to the DG, Sani’s leadership in the digital space kept VON at the forefront of public media institutions and global competitiveness.

He commended her experience, passion, and love for journalism, which he said, enabled her to excel in her role and serve as a role model for younger journalists.

The VON DG emphasised that, “journalism is a marathon, not a sprint”, and Sani’s long-standing career is a testament to her dedication and commitment to the profession.

Mr. Garba Shehu, former Special Adviser on Media to late President Muhammadu Buhari, described the retirement of Sani as a significant loss for the organisation but a potential gain for other sectors of the journalism profession.

Shehu praised her, as “a strong and young professional with much to contribute to journalism.”

He highlighted her unique qualities, particularly her social responsibility, selflessness, and commitment to helping others to succeed.

According to him, Sani embodies the principles of servant leadership, a concept often touted by politicians but rarely exemplified.

“Her legacy as a role model for young journalists and a champion of socially responsible journalism will continue to inspire others in the field,” he said.

Abdulwaheed Odusile, former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, commended Sanni’s dedication and expertise, which he said, earned her recognition and respect in the industry.

Odusile said he was, particularly impressed by Sani’s dedication and selfless efforts during the IPI World Congress, hosted in Abuja in 2018.

On her part, Sani expressed gratitude to God and her family for their support throughout her 34 years career in public service.

While reflecting on the challenges and rewards of her time in service, she highlighted the importance of dedication, clear vision, and family support.

Sani emphasised the need for media professionals to adapt to new technologies and appreciate their impact on the industry and the society

She stressed that telling a good story starts with understanding oneself and one’s audience.

Despite retiring from active public service, she assured to remain active in the media space, pursuing research, teaching, writing, and lecturing.

“It has been a very difficult, challenging, interesting and rewarding 34 years in service.

“It’s not easy. You have new and great ideas, but some people don’t understand, so they find it a bit difficult to agree with you.

“But if you are consistent, if you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, and you are dedicated and resolute, the sky is not the limit.

“I have pulled out from active public service, but have not retired. My brain is still exceptionally active, and I plan to utilise it.

“I’ll be doing a lot of research work and writing, and I won’t get tired of seeing myself in the media space,” she said.

Sani’s dedication to her work and her commitment to excellence have been hallmarks of her career, which started with the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, before joining VON.

He stated at the opening of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged ‘Gateway Games’ 2024 on Sunday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Tinubu who was represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, said that for decades, sports had placed Nigeria on the global map for positive reasons.

He said that nothing had brought Nigerians together like sports, whether on the pitch, or on the tracks.

“We are reminded daily that we’re not strangers to one another, we are compatriots drawn from different roots but drinking from the same well of national pride.

“We recognised the critical role sports played in building the nation. Sports is about togetherness, sports is the music of our shared ambition.

“That is why here in Nigeria sports is a rallying point for patriotism and a workshop for shaping not just the body but the mind and spirit of our people,” he said.

Tinubu said that the reorganisation and administration of sports under the present administration into a stand alone National Sports Commission, reflected the seriousness with which the sector was being guided by the present dispensation.

“For decades, sports had put Nigeria on global map, from medal winning Olympians to renowned footballers , we have nurtured champions,” he said.

Tinubu commended the Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Sheu Dikko and his team for their renewed initiatives for the sports sector.

He commended Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State for raising the bar of the sports festival.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman, NSC commended the Ogun State government for accepting to host the festival, which according to him, demonstrated its commitment towards sports development.

He lauded Tinubu for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for the sports sector.

Dikko said Tinubu’s bold decision to implement the reorganisation of the federal ministry of sports into a commission, had laid a foundation for the sustainable growth of the sporting industry.

“This decision has also strengthened sports to be one of the key drivers of our economy.

“Indeed, this clearly underlines the futuristic vision of Mr President and a clear propensity to take bold decisions, so long he believes they are right and for the collective good of all.

“Indeed, history will be kind to him for this decision, not just in the sports sector but across other political and social sectors of the country.

“For the first time in the history of the sports festival and in line with the Tinubu’s government, we introduced the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) and we have over 200 of them participating in this festival,” he said.

Dikko commended the Ogun government for accepting to host the festival which demonstrated its commitment towards sports development.

He revealed that eight states had indicated interest to host the next edition.

“This is the only platform for our athletes to display their talents and launch themselves into the global space,” he added.

In his remarks, Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence that the 2024 sports festival “will be the best festival you’ll observe in the country.”

He added that the festival would produce many champions with hidden talents, which he promised, would be nurtured to perfection.

Olopade, who is also the chairman of the main organising committee of the sports festival, expressed strong optimism that the compettion would be a breeding ground for future world champions.

He emphasised that the quality of performances at the festival reflected Nigeria’s immense potential in global sports.

“With the standard of competition and the enthusiasm we’ve witnessed so far, I am confident that this festival will produce many athletes who will go on to become world champions,” he said.

The biennial multi-sport event which features 33 sports, started on May 16 and will end on May 30.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, has commiserated with the governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, and the people of the state over the Maiduguri flood which claimed several lives and displaced many.

The incident also left many injured and property destroyed.

The NSCIA expressed the sympathy in a statement issued on Friday by its Deputy Secretary-General, Prof. Salisu Shehu.

The council also commiserated with the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar ibn Garbai Elkanemi.

“May Allah give you the fortitude to bear this monumental trial,” NSCIA prayed.

The group commended the efforts and the empathy of the federal and Borno State governments on the matter.

“We, however, wish to implore them to further deploy all their machineries, particularly the entire emergency management agencies and most importantly the Northeast Development Commission to ensure that this disaster is efficiently managed to reduce the sufferings of the thousands of the victims. Also, governments at all levels should put in place necessary measures to avert the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents,” NSCIA said.

READ ALSO: NBS report: Tinubu assures of a robust economy

The group asserted that it was sad that the unfortunate development happened at a time when Nigerians generally were grappling to survive, owing to the effect of the current economic reforms by the federal government.

It is “a tragedy too many,” the council declared.

The council prayed that Almighty Allah should repose the souls of the departed and grant the injured quick recovery.

It also prayed that Allah would replenish those who had lost their wealth and property.

The group said: “At the end, we wish to remind our brothers and sisters with the verse below: “And surely, We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops, but give glad tidings to the steadfast. Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! We are from Allah and lo! Unto Him we are returning.” (Suratul Baqarah: 155 & 156).
