Tinubu gave the assurances during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the Armed Forces at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of officers and men on the frontlines.

“I have listened to the Chief of Army Staff on my recent approvals to the Nigerian Armed Forces. My duty is to thank all of you on behalf of a grateful nation, knowing fully well that many times you are without your families and that you stay away from them. Some of you are facing attacks by bandits and terrorists.

“I commend your courage, sacrifice, and professionalism as you put your lives on the line in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.”

He noted that the gallant efforts of the security forces had continued to degrade the capabilities of terrorist groups and bandits operating in various parts of the country.

“You have been working to serve the country deeply and protect our sovereignty. This nation will always be grateful to you, and your sacrifices will not be in vain, I assure you.“

He assured them of continued investment in modern equipment, intelligence, and logistics to enhance their operational effectiveness.

The president thanked Nigerians for their endurance during the economic reengineering.

“I am happy to inform you that your sacrifices and that of fellow citizens, all the sacrifices are not in vain. We are now out of the dark tunnel,” the president said.

President Tinubu also used the opportunity to extend his heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of Borno State over the recent terrorist attack in the state.

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Oluwafemi Oluyode, represented by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the president for various approvals which had enhanced their welfare and operational efficiency.

“I want to appreciate the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces for the auspicious opportunity of marking the breaking of fast for both faiths. This unique period offers us the opportunity to renew our service and our commitments to our fatherland.

“I want to most sincerely thank our indefatigable President for the various approvals for the upward review of salaries of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, as well as the upward review of allowances of the Brigade of Guards.

“These various approvals also extend to the areas of equipment procurement as well as the provision of decent accommodations for the members of the armed forces. These laudable approvals will go a long way in enhancing our operational efficiency, and I assure you that they are well-received by all members of the armed forces,” the CDS said.

The induction of Shaibu into the Governing Council of the Pan African AU Agenda 2063 took place today, Wednesday, February 04, in Abuja.

The Agenda 2063 is the African Union’s 50-year strategic framework (2013-2063) aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse through inclusive, sustainable development, integration, and Pan-Africanism.

The Agenda serves as a blueprint for achieving “The Africa We Want,” focusing on economic growth, democratic governance, peace, security, and cultural identity.

Ambassador Shaibu’s nomination into the advisory council and ambassador of the Pan-African African Union Agenda 2063 diplomatic mission was contained in a letter dated 18th of November 2025 and signed by the president of the Pan African AU, Ambassador Stephen Gbatigbi Ben-Joel.

According to the letter, Shaibu’s nomination is in recognition of his “outstanding excellence as an educationist, administrator, academic and businessman.”

The letter reads: “After a distinguished review of your exemplary contributions to national development, your invaluable service under various political leaders in Nigeria, it is with profound honour that we hereby convey your nomination into the advisory council of the Pan-African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission.

“In addition, the Governing Council is pleased to further nominate you to serve as an Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the Mission – a role reserved for exceptional leaders whose influence, intellect, and integrity embody the spirit of the African Union Agenda 2063.”

Shaibu, who currently serves as a Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, is a teacher, journalist and public relations and crisis communication expert with a combined experience of nearly three decades.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the incident on Sunday in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan.

It was reported that about 10 to 15 gunmen attacked ASP Entonu Shaibu and his patrol team on Saturday at about 1:30 p.m., leading to the death of Insp. Aliu Oluwole.

The attackers also seized his AK-47 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition, bearing breach number 4516.

“Yes, there was an attack on Police operatives during which an Inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Olayinka said.

He said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, had ordered immediate manhunt and comprehensive investigation into the attack.

According to him, preliminary findings indicate that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries and operatives are currently on their trail.

Olayinka reassured members of the public that the command had put in place adequate security measures to safeguard lives and property in the state.

The PPRO urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and report any individuals with gunshot injuries.

He also called on residents to report any one seeking medical attention for gun shots under suspicious circumstances to the nearest police station or security agency.

Olayinka said that the command remained resolute to apprehend perpetrators of the heinous act and bring them to justice.

Shaibu gave the charge on Monday while addressing officers and soldiers at Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, during his maiden operational visit to the formation.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

He commended the troops for their resilience, professionalism and operational effectiveness in tackling banditry, kidnapping and other crimes, describing their efforts as reassuring to law-abiding citizens.

“I have been fully briefed on your operations and the successes recorded so far.

“I commend you for your commitment and urge you to sustain the tempo,” he said.

The COAS directed the troops to take the fight to criminal hideouts, stressing that no location must be considered inaccessible.

“Go after them in the bushes, forests and wherever they are hiding.

“Ensure that we reduce these criminal activities to the barest minimum and restore safety across your area of responsibility,” he added.

Shaibu reiterated that the protection of lives and property remained the core mandate of the Nigerian Army, assuring Nigerians that criminal elements would not be allowed any safe haven.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to troops’ welfare, announcing the approval of renovations and construction of additional accommodation within the barracks to ease housing pressure.

According to him, high morale is critical to operational success, adding that welfare would continue to receive priority attention.

He urged the troops to properly maintain existing facilities while remaining disciplined, professional and mission-focused in the discharge of their duties.

The visit featured operational briefings and interactions with officers and soldiers of the Division.

27 officers were recently promoted from the rank of Brigadier General, one of whom, Brig.-Gen. Z.A. Saidu was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major General.

Among those decorated on Wednesday is the former Aide de Camp (ADC) to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Maj.-Gen. Ojogbane Adegbe, who is currently the Director of Foreign Liaison, Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA.

Adegbe was decorated by his former boss, former President Jonathan and supported by Adegbe’s wife.

Also decorated in the current Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, among others.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede and former Chiefs of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai and Faruk Yahaya, among other dignitaries.

In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt -Gen. Waidi Shaibu, charged newly promoted Major Generals to demonstrate a higher level of professionalism, strategic foresight and loyalty as they assume greater responsibilities in the Nigerian Army.

Shiabu said the promotion recognised years of sacrifice and merit, adding that the officers now occupy a tier where their decisions will directly shape national security outcomes.

He said the nation was confronted by evolving threats ranging from terrorism and banditry to other asymmetric challenges, which require adaptive thinking and reform-driven leadership.

Shaibu told the officers that their elevation demands a new level of commitment to strengthening operational efficiency across all theatres of operation.

“Our expectations are high. Our troops on the front lines must feel your leadership, and our citizens must feel the impact of your decisions,” he said.

The COAS reminded the generals that the Nigerian Army remains the cornerstone of national stability, adding that their loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief, the Constitution and the Nigerian people must remain unwavering.

He stressed the importance of exemplary conduct and urged them to deepen collaboration with sister services, intelligence agencies, paramilitary organisations and civilian stakeholders.

According to him, no single agency can tackle Nigeria’s complex security challenges alone.

Shaibu highlighted Nigeria’s responsibility in fostering stability across the West African sub-region, saying the Army must continue to support regional efforts to counter violent extremism and secure shared borders.

He encouraged officers who were not promoted to remain focused, adding that progression in the military is deliberate and based on merit, integrity and professionalism.

The Army chief commended families of the newly promoted generals for their silent sacrifices, saying that no officer succeeds alone.

He urged the officers to wear their new ranks with pride, embrace humility and commit to renewed service.

Shaibu expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his support of the Army and congratulated the officers on their elevation, wishing them success in their new command roles.

In his vote of thanks, one of the newly decorated officers, Maj.-Gen. Francis Omatai, expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving their promotion.

He described the elevation as both an honour and a renewed call to higher responsibility in service to the nation.

Omatai pledged the resolve of the newly decorated senior officers to recommit themselves to the service of the army and the nation at large.

A credible source at Army Headquarters revealed this on Friday in Abuja.

The source said the victims were abducted from their farms at Unguwan Nungu on November 29, prompting Sector 5 troops to launch sustained search-and-rescue mission.

He said the troops intercepted the kidnappers around 6.40 a.m. on Friday as they attempted to collect ransom money from relatives of the victims.

According to him, the soldiers engaged the criminals with superior firepower, forcing them to abandon the captives and flee.

“The troops recovered a fabricated AK-47 rifle, one round of 9mm ammunition and ₦1.6 million, described as part of the ransom money.

“The rescued women have since been debriefed and reunited with their families, while efforts are underway to track down the fleeing kidnappers,” he said.

The source said the Nigerian Army remained committed to restoring peace and security in different parts of the country.

He said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops and urged them to sustain the tempo against terrorists, bandits and criminal elements.

A credible military source, on Sunday, said that the victims, aged between 15 and 20, were abducted on November 23 while harvesting crops on their family farmlands.

The source said the girls were freed on Saturday following a swift intelligence-driven operation in the southern Borno axis.

He said the rescued girls, identified as Fatima Shaibu; Fatima Umaru; Hauwa Abubakar; Saliha Muhammed; Sadiya Umaru; Amira Babel; Zara Adamu; Nana Shaibu; Zainab Musa; Zainab Muhammed; Jamila Saidu and Hauwa Hamidu, had been evacuated to a military facility for medical care, psychological support and debriefing.

According to him, their recovery has brought relief to the community, which had been tense since the abduction.

“The military high command commended the troops for their gallantry and acknowledged the role of local informants whose timely intelligence aided the operation.

“Troops are sustaining aggressive operations to track ISWAP remnants and prevent further attacks on civilian communities.

“We urge residents to continue supporting military operations by providing credible and timely information,” he said.

A credible military source at Army Headquarters, confirmed the development on Saturday in Abuja.

The source said the operations were conducted simultaneously across the North-East, North-West, North-Central and South-South regions.

According to the source, troops of 192 Battalion, supported by the Civilian Joint Task Force, neutralised two terrorists during a fierce encounter with Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, fighters at Hudugum Village in Gwoza local government area of Borno.

He added that three terrorists, identified as Fannami Ari (aka Abu Dujana), Hussaini Hassan Modu (aka Abu Yusuf) and another trainee, surrendered to troops in Kukawa and Damboa local government areas.

The source revealed that the surrendered terrorists cited loss of confidence in their leaders and worsening conditions in their camps.

In the North-West, the military source said the troops of 1 Brigade foiled two coordinated kidnap attempts and rescued 11 victims along the Magami–Jan Gemi and Kucheri–Bilbis routes in Zamfara.

He added that troops in the North-Central also apprehended 15 criminal suspects and rescued four victims during clearance operations in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and Kaduna states.

He further disclosed that troops in the South-South discovered and dismantled two illegal oil refining camps at Biseni in Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State and seized 62 sacks of stolen crude oil in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo.

The source assured that the army under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, remained committed to sustaining the tempo of operations and ensuring peace and stability across the country.

The development, according to the Army Headquarters, is aimed at reinvigorating leadership, strengthening command structures and enhancing operational effectiveness across the service.

In a statement on Thursday in Abuja, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, said the exercise affected several Major Generals and Brigadier Generals in strategic positions.

Anele said Maj.-Gen. Bamidele Alabi had been redeployed to the Army Headquarters Department of Policy and Plans as Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), while Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam, formerly Chief of Special Services and Programmes, would proceed to Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Operations.

She said that Maj.-Gen. Peter Mala had been moved from the Office of the National Security Adviser to Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) as Commander.

According to her, Maj.-Gen. Samson Jiya was redeployed from the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC) to Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Accounts and Budget.

Other appointments include Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso as Chief of Operations (Army); Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullahi as Chief of Administration (Army); and Maj.-Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi as Chief of Civil-Military Affairs.

Also affected are Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Haruna, who moves to the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kontagora, as Commander; and Maj.-Gen. Philip Ilodibia, now Chief of Defence Space Administration.

The statement added that Maj.-Gen. Taofik Sidick was redeployed to the Nigerian Army Finance Corps as Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army), while Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Ibrahim becomes Corps Commander Ordnance.

Others are Maj.-Gen. Adeyinka Adereti, Corps Commander Electrical and Mechanical Engineers; Maj.-Gen. Nansak Shagaya, Corps Commander Supply and Transport; and Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, Acting Corps Commander Education.

At the training institutions, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye was appointed Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna; Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Mustapha, Commandant, Nigerian Army Signal School; Maj.-Gen. Adamu Hassan, Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Artillery; and Brig.-Gen. John Bulus, Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Finance and Accounts.

The COAS also appointed Maj.-Gen. Saidu Audu, as Force Commander, Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), N’Djamena; Maj.-Gen. Warrah Idris as Commander, Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fansan Yamma.

Maj.-Gen. Oluremi Fadairo is now the General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander, Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA.

Similarly, Maj.-Gen. Olatokumbo Bello was appointed Director, Defence Media Operations, while Brig.-Gen. Samaila Uba becomes Director, Defence Information.

The Army Chief charged the newly appointed officers to bring their wealth of experience, administrative acumen and strategic foresight to bear in advancing a disciplined and combat-ready army capable of confronting contemporary security challenges.

He urged them to sustain operational momentum, strengthen inter-agency collaboration and uphold the army’s core values of loyalty, selfless service, integrity and excellence.

The president gave the charge on Thursday while decorating the new service chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The new service chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, AVM Kennedy Aneke and Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas.

His words: “I charge you, as the heads of our nation’s armed forces, to carry out your duties with patriotic zeal. Nigerians expect results, not excuses.”

He urged them to be innovative, pre-emptive and courageous, giving the assurance that he would provide all the support needed to carry out their duties.

He emphasized the importance of their job, saying that without security every other thing was meaningless.

The statement by the president reads in full:

1. I congratulate you on your appointment and subsequent confirmation by the Senate. As your Commander-in-Chief, I am entrusting you with a tremendous responsibility—one that you must approach with the highest standards of commitment and dedication.
2. Today’s ceremony is beyond the symbolism of decoration. It marks the beginning of our renewed effort to ensure the peace and security of all Nigerians. Each of you has been carefully selected for this critical task.

Security is an essential element without which everything else is rendered meaningless. There cannot be sufficient development if this fundamental aspect of human need is unmet. Our people and our nation must remain secure to enjoy the benefits of governance.

3. The government’s foremost duty is to protect the citizens. Over the years, our military has remained steadfast in defending our nation’s territorial integrity, with many soldiers paying the ultimate price for their service. In dark times, when terrorists and armed marauders held significant portions of our land, our gallant armed forces rose to the challenge and reclaimed those occupied territories.
4. We have restored peace to many areas previously under siege, rescued countless kidnapped citizens, and significantly diminished the capacity of the terror groups.
5. I thank our armed forces for their patriotism, diligence, and dedication to their duty. As your Commander-in-Chief, I sincerely appreciate your sacrifices, as I have repeatedly acknowledged.
6. However, challenges remain. Security threats are constantly evolving, constantly mutating. Of grave concern to our administration is the recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.
7. I charge you, as the heads of our nation’s armed forces, to carry out your duties with patriotic zeal. Nigerians expect results, not excuses.
8. I charge you also to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous. Let’s stay ahead of those who seek to threaten our peace. Let us deploy technology where necessary. We cannot allow the crisis that began in 2009 to persist any longer.
9. I wish you success as you take up the challenge. I promise to provide all the support you need to get the job done.
10. Thank you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May God continue to keep our armed forces safe.
