Kabiyesi o, k’ade o pe lori, Ki bata pe l’ese. May your reign be long.

Sir, I am compelled to write this open letter to you in view of the recent letter you wrote to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, on a matter that should not warrant such a degrading letter. I want to believe that you did not see the content of the letter purportedly signed by your media aide, Bode Durojaiye, before it was made public.

You come from a lineage that is well loved and respected in Oyo State and beyond. I still have fond memories of one of your uncles, Prince. B. O. Owoade, who was a former Principal at the Lagos State Model College, Kankon, in Badagry, and served from 1988 to 2005. Till date, his impact and legacies are still evident for all to see. Again, your cosmopolitan nature as a man who has lived in the United Kingdom and Canada for a long time as well as the exposure you must have acquired in those foreign lands should have shaped your views on the changing dynamics in world affairs.

Kabiyesi, in my opinion, you should not have approved such a letter to be written to a fellow Oba. Even if the Oba is a Third-class Chief, he does not deserve the manner in which Durojaiye penned that letter. Sir, allow me to quote what your media aide wrote on your behalf: “The attention of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has been drawn to the purported conferment of the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on a business tycoon, Dotun Sanusi, by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi. The conferment of a chieftaincy title, which borders on Yorubaland by the Ooni of Ife is an affront to the referred institution of the Alaafin, who is the Titan of Yorubaland and who holds the exclusive right to confer any chieftaincy title which covers the entire Yorubaland on anyone. The Ooni of Ife is behaving as if there is no authority to check and call him to order, and because of that ‘above the law’ syndrome of his, he is in the habit of walking on everybody’s back, including the apex Court in the country, the Supreme Court, which had ruled on the exclusive preserve of the Alaafin to confer chieftaincy titles that cover the entire Yorubaland on anyone. The instrument of office presented to Oba Ogunwusi during his installation specifically limits his traditional area of authority to Oranmiyan Local Government, which has now been split into three local governments, viz: Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South. The dictum that nobody is above the law is now being put to a crucial test, and the reality of our time makes it very obligatory for the Alaafin to call the Ooni of Ife to order and demand revocation of the so-called Okanlomo of Yoruba land chieftaincy title conferred on Engineer Dotun Sanusi within 48 hours, or face the consequences.’’

Iku Baba yeye, that press statement is a slap on the faces of all true-born Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide. In fact, it is a minus on the exalted office you now preside over. I would be furious if anyone wrote in such a condescending manner to you. I want to believe that you did not see the final copy of the press statement before it was issued and the right thing to do would be to sack your media aide and get competent media and public relations experts on your team. That letter was written last week Monday, and the 48 hours ultimatum given to the Ooni has elapsed. So, what has happened? Are Oyo warriors on their way to Ile-Ife to get the head of the Ooni as was the practice in the 16th century?

In the statement issued by your staff, he stated that the authority of the Ooni is limited to Oranmiyan Local Government, which has now been split into three local governments while you have authority over the entire Yoruba race. Kabiyesi, have you checked the 1999 constitution which we are presently operating in Nigeria? Do you know that a Local Government Chairman can remove you from office if he or she so desires?

Your appointment letter, in actual fact, was issued by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and he could also sign a letter removing you from office. Kabiyesi, please go through old copies of Nigerian Newspapers or Magazines and read up of how powerless the traditional institution has become in Nigeria. Recent developments where the Emir of Kano was deposed and his uncle installed is still fresh in our minds. The fact that the 48 hours given to the Ooni has elapsed and he is still on his throne shows that Durojaiye was out to ridicule you and your office. A first-class Oba should not be seen to be issuing an empty threat.

In another press statement issued by the same Durojaiye, he stated that you are not in any supremacy battle with the Ooni or any other traditional ruler, and that you derive your power to rule over all of Yoruba land through colonial fiat and a Supreme Court pronouncement. Hmmmm.

In the not-too-distant past, there has been record of rivalry between the Ooni and the Alaafin, particularly before the creation of Osun State out of the old Oyo State. However, when Ooni Ogunwusi got to the throne of his forefathers, he broke the jinx when he visited the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, twice, in January and May, 2016. The last time an Ooni visited Oyo was in 1937, a trip made by the then Ooni, Oba Adesoji Aderemi. Both Oba Ogunwusi and Oba Adeyemi ensured that the seed of peace they sowed germinated and was well nurtured by their utterances and attitudes towards one another. That cordial relationship between them lasted till Oba Adeyemi joined his ancestors on April 22, 2022.

During the visit, the late Alaafin Adeyemi, who could not hide his joy, said it was the first time that an Ife monarch would be visiting Oyo since 1937, confirming that he had not enjoyed cordial relationships with the past Ife monarchs. Hear him: “May your reign be long, Ooni. I am happy with Ooni Ogunwusi’s moves to unite all Yoruba Obas. This special visit was done last in March 1937, which was the first time the kings in Yoruba land met in Oyo town and history was made again, with the visit of Arole Oodua, Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, and I feel delighted to host you and to reassure you that I will be ready to work with you. I have a tight relationship with Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, and I did not want to relent my bond with any Ooni of Ife that assumed the post, but everybody has their little differences. The peace process that I and the Ooni began will yield good results. We are on a mission to unite the entire Yoruba race, and the Ooni’s interest is a welcome development. Without peace and tolerance, we cannot establish lasting unity among our people.”

While responding to Alaafin’s complimentary remarks, Oba Ogunwusi said: “It is a new dawn for all Yoruba sons and daughters around the globe. I am here, though not invited, but as the Arole Oduduwa. The onus is on me to felicitate with all sons and daughters wherever they are and to show my solidarity for any of them. I am ready to damn any consequences or insinuations from anywhere; my mission here is to preach peace among the nations of Yoruba, both home and abroad, and I am ready to work with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi, to project the unity and love which we believe exists in the days of our forefathers. I am here in the presence of the people of Oyo and God, our creator, Who Knows everything. It is a day of joy when the Yoruba race comes together to celebrate its own leaders. It is also a day of joy because I am celebrating with our king, the Alaafin of Oyo.”

Supremacy battle, and who should give chieftaincy titles should be the least of your concerns. Face the task ahead and may the spirit of your forefathers’ guide and protect you. Long may you reign on the throne!

That was at the 45th coronation anniversary of your predecessor, where no fewer than 30 other kings were present. It is in line with this that I would plead with you to toe the line of unity of the Yoruba race.

Kabiyesi, Yoruba in particular, and Nigerians in general, have moved beyond those 18th century supremacy battles between hamlets and villages. We are in a modern era where ideas, science, and technology determine who is relevant in world affairs. You left Nigeria first for the United Kingdom where you studied before finally settling down in Canada. Many of our compatriots are scattered all over the world, looking for how they would better their lives as those that we elect back at home to govern us have messed up our country.

Now that you have been placed in a position of power, what should be uppermost in your mind should be how to improve the lot of Yoruba sons and daughters at home and abroad. How you can, in your own little corner, create jobs for our teeming unemployed youths in Oyo, collaborate with fellow traditional rulers in the South west to revive our dying agricultural sector so that millions of your subjects would stop going to bed hungry.

READ ALSO: Nigeria, Japan align mining plans, seek cooperation on investment

What you can do to bring development to the nooks and cranny of Yoruba land should be paramount in your mind. You have the connections and exposure; you know how it was done in the developed world, where many of our compatriots now run to for greener pastures, and I know that you can replicate developmental efforts back home. Work with those in the government and other traditional rulers to bring development to the region. We are presently confronted by myriads of problems. Yoruba land is presently under siege. Our culture is dying. How to revive it should be paramount in your heart. Even some Obas who should be the custodian of our culture are the ones running away from it. This is sad.

Alaafin should emulate the good example set by Oba Adedokun Omoniyi Abolarin, the Oba of Oke-ila Orangun, who set up a school, Abolarin College, and still find time to teach. The school is offering free education with resources like free food, accommodation, laptops, and electricity supply to underprivileged children. The development of the Yoruba race should be uppermost in your mind and you can’t do it alone without the support and cooperation of other Obas. Supremacy battle, and who should give chieftaincy titles should be the least of your concerns. Face the task ahead and may the spirit of your forefathers’ guide and protect you. Long may you reign on the throne!

Oyo State has rescued a homeless woman and her twin daughters off the streets within the Ibadan metropolis.

This is as it reiterated its commitment to ending the menace of vagrancy, street begging and other societal ills.

The rescue team, which comprises of top management officers of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, was led by the commissioner, Mrs. Toyin Balogun, on Thursday.

The exercise, according to the commissioner, was in line with the agenda of the Governor Seyi Makinde led-administration to improve the welfare and wellbeing of the vulnerable and destitute in the society, while ensuring that they are also beneficiaries of the sustainable development agenda of the government.

During the rescue exercise, the commissioner stated that the state government was committed to rehabilitating as many as possible destitute and reintegrating them into society, as they are part of the citizenry of the state.

She stressed that “destitute are not only homeless individuals that live on the street, but they form part of the poorest of the poor/ extremely poor who lack the wherewithal to provide for their basic needs, hence the need for the government and society at large to stand in the gap by putting in place safety net measures, until they are able to stand on their feet and get reintegrated into society after becoming productive both to themselves and the society at large.”

The vagrant woman was said to have been spotted sleeping outside at the mercy of the elements and unscrupulous miscreants in different locations with her vulnerable, under-aged twins who as investigations revealed, had never been enrolled in the school system.

Balogun elicited salient information from the young lady who was a student of Mass Communications at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka before the vicissitudes of life altered her life’s trajectory.

She said the Governor Seyi Makinde led government would not relent in its quest to improve on the quality of life of the citizenry across board without leaving anyone behind.

READ ALSO: Nobody, repeat, nobody does life alone, By Segun Oshinaga

The commissioner had earlier mandated the ministry staff to keep an eye out for the woman and her kids since a couple of weeks ago when she first received reports about the subjects but apparently, the young lady somehow got wind of the rescue efforts and changed location before she and her kids could be rescued.

Fortunately, a good Samaritan spotted them along the Jericho axis, the report got to the commissioner, who went into action with her team.

A cordon was laid for the woman and fortunately the commissioner was able to connect with her and peacefully evacuate her and her kids from the spot.

She was taken to a tertiary health institution which has requisite facilities for the treatment of mental health issues, where she is presently admitted for treatment.

Meanwhile, her kids were taken to a state owned facility from where they would be taken for treatment and then eventually settled back into the school system.

The evacuation exercise was carried out by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion with invaluable support from the CMD UCH, Prof Otegbayo, Dr. Abdulmalik and Mr. Tunji of ASIDO Foundation (an NGO involved in advocacy for and treatment of people with mental health challenges), Dr. Bamgbose, a mental health specialist with the UCH, among others.

The Oyo State government has achieved 58.7% in the practice of Exclusive Breastfeeding by Women of Child Bearing Age, the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria, ANRiN, revealed on Thursday.

The Project Coordinator, ANRiN Oyo Project Implementation Unit, Dr Khadijah Alarape, stated this during a stakeholders meeting of State Committee on Food and Nutrition organised by ANRiN Project which was held at Owu Crown Hotel, Ibadan.

The ANRIN PC who was elated with the recent data from MICS 2022 Survey said the increase showed Pregnant and Lactating women were “now aware of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the general well-being of their children.”

She appreciated the state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, for his support at increasing the maternity leave for pregnant women from three months to six months and also ANRiN for implementing 7 Basic Package of Nutritional Services across the 33 LGA’s in the state.

This, according to her, has really helped the status of exclusive breastfeeding in the state in the last two years.

“The State Governor should be thanked for his help at granting 6-months maternity leave for our mothers. This has really helped. This can be confirmed from available statistics on Nutrition indices that the State is doing well as far as Exclusive Breastfeeding is concerned. Although we need to work more on the rate of stunting in the state.”

While calling for more collaboration of the SCFN members, Dr. Alarape said “it was imperative for every Line Ministries on Nutrition to have a budgetary allocation for Nutrition activities in their various MDAs.”

She reiterated ANRiN’s effort at providing cost effective nutritional services to pregnant and lactating women, adolescent-girls as well as children under 5 across the state.

She also said two none state actors, Solina Health Ltd., and Save the Children, were currently working in communities across the state, giving pregnant and lactating mothers as well as children under five basic package of nutritional services.

In his welcome address, the Director of Development Partners at the Ministry of Budget and Planning, Mr. Moruf Oyetunji, said the meeting is a statutory meeting which is held quarterly to review nutritional intervention and address malnutrition in the state.

In another development, the Oyo State government has assured the road users of Oyo-Fasola-Iseyin road and its environ that the newly constructed Ogun river bridge on the road would be opened to traffic soon as the work was close to completion.

The assurance was made by the Commissioner for Public Works and Transports, Professor Dahud Kehinde Sangodoyin, during an inspection of the 34.8 Km Oyo-Fasola-Iseyin road constructions which started in 2021.

Professor Sangodoyin implored the citizens to protect whatever facility the government had provided so that there would not be any need for unnecessary repair.

An Islamic human rights organisation, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has threatened that muslims in Oyo State will vote against Governor Seyi Makinde in the March 18 governorship election for allegedly naming Adogba Central Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan, after himself.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC said Makinde had no moral right to name the mosque after himself.

It therefore warned the governor to change the mosque to its original name before the coming governorship election or face the consequence

“It is daylight robbery. It is abracadabra: the more you look, the less you see. Makinde has robbed Peter to pay Paul,” the group said.

It added: “It is an insult on the corporate dignity of the Muslim community of Oyo State in particular and the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.

“We demand that Makinde removes his name from that mosque. It does not belong to him. It is an attempt to rewrite history. Adogba Central Mosque was built for the Organisation of Tadomunul Muslimeen by the Saudi-based Haramain Islamic Organisation.”

The statement by MURIC reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to the name of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State which has been conspicuously printed on the newly rebuilt Adogba Central Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan. It had better not be. It is an insult on the corporate dignity of the Muslim community of Oyo State in particular and the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.

“We demand that Makinde removes his name from that mosque. It does not belong to him. It is an attempt to rewrite history. Adogba Central Mosque was built for the Organisation of Tadomunul Muslimeen by the Saudi-based Haramain Islamic Organisation.

“The mosque was pulled down by the Makinde administration despite protests by the Muslim community. The demolition was one of the governor’s anti-Muslim actions. Within six months of his resumption of office in 2019, Makinde became known in Muslim circles as a serial mosque destroyer.

“He threatened to pull down Olore Mosque, turned Bodija Muslim praying ground to a recreation centre and bulldozed Adogba Central Mosque. To date, we are not aware of a single church that Makinde demolished. MURIC warned in November 2019 that Makinde should leave Muslim mosques alone but he went ahead with the demolition and promised to rebuild it.

“The governor has rebuilt the mosque in another location but he renamed it after himself. We are shocked to our marrows. What audacity! It is desecration of our place of worship. We cannot worship Makinde. We will worship Allah alone. It would have been right if he had not destroyed our mosque ab initio. But now we can still ask him ‘Where is our mosque?’ It is highly immoral. His action also lacks tact.

“Makinde can only be justified to name the mosque after himself if the money spent on its construction belonged to him personally. He needs to prove that to us but he has not. He used our common patrimony. That money belongs to the tax payers of Oyo State. It is not Makinde’s money. Therefore he has no moral right to name the mosque after himself. It is daylight robbery. It is abracadabra: the more you look, the less you see. Makinde has robbed Peter to pay Paul.

“Apart from the immoral angle, the governor has exhibited ulterior motive. Even the timing of the completion of the mosque was calculated to coincide with the 2023 electioneering period. Seyi Makinde has played on the intelligence of the Oyo State Muslim community. It is outrageous.

“Unfortunately the governor does not know that the Muslims are not pleased with his action. The best advice we can give him at this point is to remove his name from the mosque and replace it with the original name of the mosque which he destroyed, viz, Adogba Central Mosque.

“MURIC is known for dialogue and non-violence. Our motto is ‘Dialogue, No Violence’. Neither do we issue threats or give ultimatum. But the best time for the governor to effect the change of nomenclature is before the gubernatorial election coming up next week, Saturday, 18th March, 2023 in order to avoid protest votes on that day.

“We say capital ‘NO’ to ‘Makinde Central Mosque’. It is a rogue nomenclature. Our mosque is ‘Adogba Central Mosque.’ Engr Seyi Makinde has no mosque.”

#NoToMakindeCentralMosque #AdogbaCentralMosque #ReturnOurMosque

Some concerned Nigerians on Monday took to major roads in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, protesting against the lingering scarcity of fuel and new naira notes.

The protesters, who had earlier assembled at the main gate of the University of Ibadan, later took the protest round major roads in Ibadan.

Heavily armed security agents comprising army, police and men of Amotekun Corps, were strategically positioned at the main gate of the university to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

Also, the security agents were seen controlling traffic, directing motorists and advising them to remove the green leaves hung on their vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles as a sign of solidarity with the protesters.

The protesters, who were mainly human rights activists and pro-democracy campaigners, claimed that they were protesting against untold hardship Nigerians were being subjected to.

The protesters also claimed that they were expressing their dissatisfactions over the lingering scarcity of the new naira notes and petroleum in the country.

They blocked the university’s gate, leading to heavy traffic on the Sango-Ojoo Road and Bodija-Ojo Road for some hours, after which they were dispatched by security personnel and then moved toward Sango, Mokola and Bodija areas of the city.

There was heavy presence of combined security agencies guarding the protesters to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The security operatives were also seen at different points on major routes in Ibadan metropolis warding off those suspected to have evil intentions from hijacking the protest.

One of the leaders of the protesters, Solomon Emiola, said that Nigerians resorted to the protest to express their displeasures over the untold hardship they had been subjected to.

Emiola said: “We are here as Nigerians to kick against the oppression from the CBN Governor.

“For some weeks now, Nigerians have been crying and dying as they were unable to access their hard earned sweat in banks.

“I am a victim. I have my money in the bank, but I cannot collect my money. I am hungry and I cannot eat. There is difficulty in using USSD code for transactions.

“With the scarcity, we cannot afford to buy fuel at N350 and N400 per litre.”

Another protester, who pleaded anonymity, said he trekked from Apete to UI Gate on an empty stomach to join in the protest, adding that he was unable to provide for his household.

“There is no green light as to how I will eat and fend for my family because people who want to patronise my business are out of cash.

“I live on daily income, but I do not make any sale as people are not buying things nor need my services,” he said.

As schools in Ibadan resume for the second term on Monday, some parents have lamented the increase in the school fees of their wards by some private schools.

The respondents, in separate interviews on Sunday, accused the affected schools of not taking the economic situation of the country into consideration.

A mother of three, Mrs Olawumi Johnson, said that the increment in her children’s fees made her husband irritable.

“The increase is not favourable, considering the hard time people are going through in the country today,” she said.

Mrs Deborah Adefusi said that although the increase in the fees of her children was not up to N10,000, the present situation in the country was unfriendly.

“We need the economy to be thriving so that life will become more comfortable for us,” Adefusi said.

Also, Mr Sanmi Olatunde lamented the hike in his children’s school fees, adding that most schools were acting oblivious of the country’s present economic reality.

“Schools need to take it easy on parents and ensure that school fees are affordable, considering the times we are in.

“We all are feeling the heat of the moment; so schools should have a rethink, if they don’t want more students and pupils to owe them and then the debt keeps pilling up,” Olatunde said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS, in Oyo State, Dr Mary Odedare, said that determining whether school fees should be increased or not was not within the purview of the association.

“But by and large, looking at the whole situation holistically, we are of the opinion that if anything is going to be increased, it should not be now.

“We all know the high inflation rate and we are all operating in the same economy. It is a global crisis and not limited to Nigeria and Oyo State,” she said.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, emerged as the standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Makinde emerged the winner at the governorship primary election of the party, held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Governor Makinde scored a total of 1,040 votes out of the accredited votes of 1,048, to beat Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi, who scored two votes.

The congress was monitored by security agents, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Oyo State, Barr. Mutiu Agboke and other INEC officials.

The returning officer and chairman of the Oyo State PDP Governorship Congress Panel, Senator Ben Obi, who was represented by the Panel’s Secretary, Alhaji Abdullahi Mai Basira, said that the total votes cast were 1,048, with six of the votes voided.

The governor, in his acceptance speech, maintained that he would continue to fulfil all the promises he made to the people of the state, adding that he would do all within his power to continue to move the people from poverty to prosperity as he had been doing in the last three years.

Makinde, who rallied party members to work together for the party’s progress, noted that the PDP remained the best option for the people of Oyo State and Nigerians.

According to him, the party had, in three years of its leadership in Oyo, brought tremendous economic prosperity and massive infrastructure development to the state.

He added that it was time to rescue Nigeria and that the PDP remained the best path towards realising that goal.

Makinde noted that he would reach out to Barr. Gbolarumi with a view to working together, saying it was time for a new beginning for the party.

Oyo State Government has assured the people of Oyo Town that a new Alaafin of Oyo will emerge soon, urging them to be patient.

Governor Seyi Makinde gave the assurance at the eighth day fidau/interdenominational prayer held in honour of the late Oba Adeyemi at the palace arcade in Oyo.

The late Oba Adeyemi died on April 22, at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.

Makinde, represented by Chief Bayo Lawal, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, said he was aware that people were anxious to have a new king.

“People are eager to see the next king, but we have to follow due process.

“We promise not to compromise and another Alaafin will come in due time,” the governor said.

Earlier, in their separate sermons, Imam Masud Ajokidero and Rev. Eyitayo Sulola, urged the people to always embrace orderliness as observed by the late Alaafin when he was alive.

They called on the kingmakers “Oyo Mesi” to follow the path of peace and not moneybags in the selection process of the new king.

In her remarks, Chief (Mrs) Alaba Lawson, the Iyalode of Yorubaland, described the late Alaafin as father of Yorubas, who always fought for the right of his people.

Lawson said, “He always listened to the cry of Yorubas and was great historian. I wish the incoming king will sustain the legacies he left behind.”

In his remarks, Oba AbdulRashid Anikulapo, the Onibode of Igboholand, said that something bad had happened to the Yorubas with the death of Alaafin.

Anikulapo said that the traditional ruler had enthroned many kings across the South-West, including Oke-Ogun, who were not beaded crown wearing kings before he was enthroned in 1970.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the passing of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on Friday at the age of 83.

He commiserated with the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the people of the ancient town of Oyo and the entire Yoruba both home and in the diaspora over the demise of the first class traditional ruler.

Governor Sanwo-Olu in a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday, described the death of Oba Adeyemi III as a great loss to the people of Oyo town, the traditional institution in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

He said the late monarch’s service to the people of the ancient town, Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole, especially in the area of promotion of Yoruba culture and tradition will remain his enduring legacy.

The governor also condoled millions of Yoruba sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora as the Alaafin of Oyo joined his ancestors.

Sanwo-Olu urged the family, friends and associates of the deceased as well as the entire people of Oyo Kingdom, whose interests the late Iku Baba Yeye represented and worked tirelessly for during his lifetime to work towards immortalising him and ensuring that the legacies of the late Alaafin of Oyo are sustained.

“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I commiserate with my brother, the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and the people of the Oyo State, especially sons and daughters of the ancient Oyo Kingdom over the death of one of the foremost and most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who joined his ancestors on Friday.

“The death of Oba Adeyemi is a great loss not only to the people of Oyo State but the entire Yoruba sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora because of the unique position the Alaafin of Oyo holds as a descendant of Oduduwa. He will be greatly missed.

“He was one of the great promoters of Yoruba culture and tradition. He contributed immensely to the growth and development of Oyo Kingdom and improved the livelihood of the people of the town. As a first-class monarch, he left a lasting legacy that the people of Oyo ancient town will continue to cherish.

“I pray that Almighty God finds a peaceful resting place for the soul of the late Oba Adeyemi and grant the royal family, Yoruba land and the people of Oyo town the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
