Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, said on Tuesday at the World Government Summit in Dubai that access to social media for minors under 16 would be banned.

Sanchez added that all platforms would be required to implement age verification systems.

“Our children are exposed to a space they were never meant to navigate alone.

“We will no longer accept that. We will protect them from the digital Wild West.”

He added that his government would also introduce a new bill next week to hold social media executives accountable for illegal and hateful content.

Australia in December became the first country to ban social media for children under 16.

It’s a move being closely watched by other countries considering similar age-based measures, such as Britain and France.

President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the need for world leaders to come together and strategise on ways to avert the looming food crisis around the world.

Buhari made the remark on Wednesday in Madrid, Spain, at the Royal Palace during an audience with his Royal Majesty, King Felipe VI in continuation of his state visit to the country.

The two leaders canvassed a global action to stem the food problem especially in wheat production occasioned by the ongoing war in Ukraine, urging world leaders to take concrete actions to avert the crisis.

The king said Nigeria was an important country and looked forward to an opportunity to visit the country especially against the background of stronger cooperation being forged by the two countries.

Buhari thanked the Spanish monarch for the invitation and hospitality extended to him since his arrival and updated him on happenings in Nigeria especially as the country gears up for general elections.

In a separate meeting with President Pedro Sanchez, Buhari said his country looked forward to increasing bilateral relations between both nations.

The Nigerian leader commended his Spanish counterpart for his leadership qualities and contributions in the war against terror in Sub-Saharan Africa especially in Mali, looking forward to cooperation in the area.

The two leaders discussed areas of cooperation on which Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed.

Sanchez emphasized that, as a major partner of Spain in Africa, Nigeria was a country that his people really wanted to have a stronger partnership with going forward.

He commended Buhari for his leadership roles in Africa especially in the area of strengthening of democratic ideals.

Currently, Spain is the largest importer of Nigerian gas and the third largest importer of Nigerian crude, and with the visit, the two leaders hoped for bigger trade relations.

At the end of the visit, nine Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were signed, namely: Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in criminal Matters; Transfer of Sentenced Persons; Extradition; Economic and Commercial Cooperation; Tourism.

Others were on Sports; Health; the Fight Against COVID-19; and Science and Innovation.

Spurs enjoyed the majority of the possession throughout the match but poor finishing meant Antonio Conte’s side had to wait until six minutes into added time for their winner.

Sergio Reguilon had a powerful shot turned away by Daniel Bachmann on 25 minutes, while Harry Kane also hit the ball just inches wide of the net in the first half.

Bachmann was called into action several times in the second half.

He tipped a shot from Lucas Moura over the bar on 52 minutes and saved a close range strike from Son Heung-Min on 71 minutes.

Joao Pedro had an 81st minute penalty appeal turned down by VAR after he lost his marker and Hugo Lloris was forced to come out.

The goalkeeper took him down but it was deemed a fair challenge.

Spurs got their winner six minutes into added time when Son floated a ball into the box and Sanchez headed it in from close range.

Erik Lamela came off the bench to earn Sevilla a point and top spot in La Liga with a stunning second-half equaliser in a 1-1 draw away to Real Mallorca on Wednesday.

Sevilla were subdued in the first half at the Son Moix and trailed in the 22nd minute when Amath Ndiaye’s low cross was converted from close range by Antonio Sanchez.

The visitors had a let-off early in the second half when Mallorca wasted a gilt-edged chance to double their lead when Angel Rodriguez thumped a close-range effort against the post.

But they began to dominate and Argentine forward Lamela, who replaced Suso in the in the 53rd minute, levelled in the 73rd minute when he cut in from the right before planting an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Mallorca had Jaume Costa red-carded late on for hacking down Lamela and the visitors thought they had snatched a victory deep in stoppage time when Lucas Ocampos tapped in from close range.

But after a lengthy VAR check the goal was ruled out for a handball in the build-up, sparking rage amongst the visitors.

Sevilla moved top with 21 points from 10 games, ahead Real Sociedad on goal difference, although Real Madrid can replace them later if they avoid defeat against Osasuna.

Mallorca, who were hugely relieved to gain a point after conceding twice in stoppage time in a 2-2 draw at Valencia on Saturday, are in 12th place with 13 points.

Inter Milan forward Alexis Sanchez has said he was ready to end his ill-fated spell at former club, Manchester United, after only one training session with the Premier League side.

Manchester United had signed Chile international Sanchez in January 2018 after he scored 80 goals in three and a half years at Arsenal.

But the former FC Barcelona man failed to reach those heights at Old Trafford under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with five goals in 45 games.

He joined Inter Milan on loan at the start of the 2019/2020 campaign, before the Italian Serie A club signed him permanently on a three-year deal in August.

“I accepted the opportunity to go to Manchester United. It felt tempting and it was something good for me … But I didn’t ask for information on what was happening inside the club,” Sanchez was quoted as saying in an Instagram post.

“Sometimes there are things that you don’t realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things.

“After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent ‘can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?’. They laughed, I told them there’s something that doesn’t sit right, it doesn’t seem good.

“But I already signed. I was already there. After the first few months I carried on having the same feeling, we weren’t united as a team in that moment.”

Inter Milan, last season’s Serie A runners-up, will visit promoted Benevento in their first match of the 2020/2021 season on September 20.
