The management of Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abuja has announced the commencement of an investigation into an incident captured in a viral video regarding its emergency response.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, PRO, Mr Obadiah Gana, on Sunday in Abuja.

Gana revealed that the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, had directed a full investigation into the matter.

He added that the inquiry was currently ongoing.

“We have been made aware of an online video that negatively depicts our hospital.

“In response, we have initiated a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding this incident.

“Findings of the investigation will be made available to the public,” he said.

He said preliminary findings indicated that the emergency department had an adequate supply of medical consumables, including latex gloves, contrary to the claims made in the video.

Additionally, he said that resuscitation equipment and medications were sufficient.

“There was no shortage of patient transfer equipment, including trolleys and wheelchairs.

“Interaction with staff on duty and other stakeholders is currently ongoing,” Gana added.

He apologised for any distress or discomfort caused and assured that the hospital took feedback seriously and maintained an open-door policy.

“We have multiple patient feedback channels available, including several phone numbers displayed throughout the hospital, QR codes, and email contacts.

“In addition, we run a medical indigent fund to assist underprivileged patients with hospital bills.

“We have successfully treated numerous unconscious patients and safely reunited them with their relatives with the help of our social workers.”

He also highlighted that FMC Abuja was a centre for specialised procedures such as open-heart surgery, laser surgery, kidney transplants, spine surgery, and other advanced treatments rarely available in most public hospitals.

Gana ended by emphasising the hospital’s commitment to quality care delivered with empathy and compassion, reiterating ongoing efforts to improve service quality.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians, especially women to speak up and seek appropriate help whenever they have medical challenges.

She spoke while receiving a delegation of the National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination led by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako.

The First Lady pointed out that since no one chose an ailment for themselves, there was no need to be ashamed to seek for help.

“I am in support of what you are doing. We are on track especially with the approach you have adopted, test, screen, vaccinate and treatment.

“A healthy nation is a wealthy nation.”

Senator Oluremi Tinubu noted that the fight against cancer could be won if the patients presented early and seek medical intervention.

“The theme for World Health Day this year, Healthy Beginnings; Hopeful future, I believe is so apt for what we are doing here today. I believe you said most of my work is 70% in health. A healthy nation is wealthy nation. No matter what wealth you have as a nation, if your population or majority of your population is sick, you are just the poorest as far as I am concerned.”

He said that translated in the ministry being able to immunise 12 million girls between ages 9 – 13 in the first 9 months of its introduction.

Dr Iziaq Salako said the ministry hoped to immunise six million girls this year.

The chairman of the Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination and former Minister of Health, Prof. Issac Adewole, was of the opinion that the First Lady demonstrated uncommon political will by supporting and flagging off the introduction of the HPV vaccine into the routine immunisation programme of the country.

He said the 8 by 8 target (immunising 8 millon girls every year) would be achieved thereby eliminating Cervical Cancer by 2030 if the First Lady lent her voice and also joined in the campaign which would be going through 12 states this year and another 12 states next year.

The Country Representative of World Health Organisation, WHO, Dr Walter Mulombo, appealed to the First Lady to lead the campaign noting that every child and woman had a right to live.

The visit of the taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also coincides with the commemoration of the World Health Day, 2025 with the theme “Heathy Beginnings; Hopeful Future” and she was presented with the WHO souvenirs.

The federal government has promised to curtail the spread of cholera through effective hygiene and sanitation practices in the country.

Dr Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Environment, gave this assurance on Friday at the commemoration of the 2024 National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) at Chika community, FCT.

NESD is commemorated on June 28 annually.

“The ongoing Cholera outbreak in the country comes as a stark reminder that when we fail to prioritise proper environmental sanitation, our public health is jeopardised and our economy adversely affected.

“Nigeria is experiencing the adverse impact of climate change as evidenced by the shift in seasons, rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events like floods, droughts and heat waves with undeniable health consequences.’’

The minister said that the commemoration of 2024 NESD with the theme “Environmental Sanitation in the Era of Climate Change” and the sub-theme “Go Greener, Stay Clean, Climate Change is Real” were apt.

According to him, the combination of climate change and poor sanitation, without doubt, posed a double jeopardy to the health of the planet and all creatures on it.

“Our presence here today is to underscore our agenda to transform Chika into a model community for good environmental sanitation practices that can inspire positive changes in other communities.

“This year’s theme is particularly apt considering the devastating impacts of climate change on our planet and the current resurgence of cholera being experienced in our country as in several other parts of the world,’’ he said.

Dr Alexander Chimbaru, the Representative of the World Health Organisation, said that the promotion of personal and environmental hygiene in local communities helped to reduce communicable diseases such as cholera.

“An aggressive adoption of environmental hygiene practices and WASH measures in our communities is needed more urgently to prevent the ongoing spread of cholera in the country.

“Climate change is impacting health in a myriad of ways, including by leading to death and illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events, such as heat waves, storms and floods.

“It is high time as a country to promote actions that both reduce carbon emissions and improve health,” Chimbaru said.

Responding, Chief of Chika community, Istifanus Shegaje, appealed to the minister to help the community with a compartment to enhance proper waste disposal.

He urged residents in the community to imbibe sustainable environment friendly practices, reduce carbon footprint and conserve their natural resources.

“Together, we can make a difference and ensure a safer, greener and healthier lifestyle both for the present and posterity,’’ he said.

Shegaje also appealed to the FCT administration to help construct concrete drainages and build asphalt roads within the community.

He expressed optimism that by such gesture, the community would enjoy the dividends of democracy and good governance in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The federal government has assured journalists of protection of their rights and support in their mission to protect the environment as the world celebrates the World Press Freedom Day, WPFD.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in a speech he delivered in Abuja on Friday at a news conference to mark the event.

The conference with the theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in Face of the Environment Crisis” was organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

The Minister of State for Environment and Ecological Management, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, and The UNESCO Country Representative, Mr Abdourahamane Diallo, featured at the briefing.

Also present was the Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

“This crisis poses a threat not only to our planet but to the very future of humanity.

“Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and others are harsh realities that demand immediate and decisive action.

READ ALSO: UNESCO restates commitment to defending freedom of expression

“It is our conviction that Press freedom is not just a fundamental human right; it is also essential for environmental sustainability.

“Without a free and independent press, we cannot hope to address the complex environmental challenges we face,” he said.

According to Idris, in the face of this crisis, newsmen were guardians of truth and champions of accountability.

“They illuminate environmental injustices, expose wrongdoing, and amplify the voices of those most affected by environmental degradation.

“The 2024 theme resonates deeply with our ministry’s vision and President Bola Tinubu’s priority areas, which prioritise restoring trust, reorienting national values, and creating an enabling environment for the media.

“We also acknowledge the challenges that journalists face in carrying out their vital work.

“As environmental defenders, journalists often confront threats, harassment, and violence for their courageous efforts to expose environment.

“I wish to reassure you of our continued commitment to tirelessly promote the tenets of PF as well as supporting journalists in their mission to protect our planet,” Idris said.

He urged stakeholders to redouble their efforts to build a future where journalism would thrive, Press Freedom upheld, and planet earth safeguarded for generations to come.

He further reaffirmed federal government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of journalists and ensuring their safety and security.

He said that federal government had provided the most unfettered access to journalists and the enabling environment that had continued to encourage the Nigerian media to grow in leaps and bounds in recent years.

In the same vein, Salako said environmental crises were so intense and gargantuan that they were at the core of most of the challenges faced by humanity.

“Ignorance, lack of awareness and appropriate knowledge about the climate crisis is still rampant in our society.

“I call upon you, our dear friends in the media for more support in our drive for environmental advocacy and citizenship, so that all creatures on earth thrive in harmony with the planet.

“The press and journalists constitute the framework for informing, educating, stimulating discussion, mobilising and setting agenda for the public who are the employers of government.

“Therefore, we must remain persistent in our advocacy, awareness creation, sensitisation and educating the public,” Salako said.

Onanuga on his part said it was regrettable that newsmen in the country did not focus enough energy on reporting the environment and urged them to start aggressive reports on the environment and climate change to save it.

Meanwhile, Diallo commended Idris, Salako, Onanuga and the Nigerian media, adding that the WPFD was a reminder for all governments and stakeholders to respect their commitments to press freedom.

“It is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of PF and professional ethics.

“It is a day which celebrates the fundamental principles of PF to evaluate it around the world to defend the media from attacks.

“It is also a day to pay tribute to journalists that have lost their lives in the line of their profession,” Diallo said.

The federal government has commended the leading roles being played by the Dangote Group to complement government’s efforts to diversify the nation’s economy and the company’s dedication to promotion of best practices in all its operations.

The commendation came even as the Ogun State government said Dangote Cement was a key driver of the state’s economy with the citing of the continent’s second biggest cement plant in the state.

Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, made the remarks while on a familiarisation visit to Dangote Cement plant, Ibese, Ogun State.

The visit was followed by a community engagement preparatory to the Expert Panel Review of the report of an Environmental Impact Assessment carried out on coal milling at the plant.

The minister declared: “Dangote Industries as a whole is an international conglomerate and I am happy that the company is at the forefront of promoting best practices in terms of conception, planning, implementation, management of factories that are manufacturers like this.”

Salako and his entourage, who were received by the Plant Management led the Plant Director, Mr. Azad Nawabuddin, described mining as one of the key industrial sectors that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has targeted for economic diversification as the nation embarks on gradual shift from oil and gas dependency.

He said it was for that reason that Dangote Cement should be commended for the huge cement plant which was creating jobs and opportunities for export.

He added that limestone mining activities, a key raw material in cement manufacturing, was one such area that attention of the government was shifting to.

Dr. Salako pointed out that while mining sector had huge potential to develop the nation’s economy, many challenges were associated with mining activities.

He then commended Dangote cement for its adherence to best practices, saying, “having gone round to see the operations in the plant, I give kudos to Dangote Cement for the automation and high technology-driven operations.”

He explained that his visit was not unconnected with the Environmental Impact Assessment, which is being done on the plant Coal Mill, noting “there is a need for mining operations to be done in a sustainable manner so that the environment is not adversely affected. But I applaud Dangote Cement for being at the forefront of promoting best practices.”

The minister said further: “For us in the ministry of environment, it means we must also sit up. Mining as it comes with its advantages, also comes with its challenges. So, we must be up and doing, as we expand the economy and grow Nigeria. We should also do it in a sustainable manner so that the environment is not adversely affected.

“We must continue in that respect to ensure that best practices are always promoted, environmental and social impact assessments are properly carried out, the stakeholders are properly involved, and the environment is properly protected so that our growth can be sustainable. That’s why we are here and I am happy that Dangote is at the forefront of that.”

While speaking also, the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, who represented the Governor Dapo Abiodun, said the state was a beneficiary of Dangote Cement presence with the amount of levies and taxes it had paid into the state coffer.

He called for a more collaboration between the state agencies and the company noting that the state was not unaware of the activities of the plant to lift its host communities.

He added that the state would be more than ready to assist the company in any way possible.

In his remark, Mr. Nawabuddin took the minister through the social investments and infrastructural milestones recorded by the Plant since inception, saying the Company had been able to substantially contribute to infrastructure development and employment in the host communities.

The Plant Director told the minister that the plant dealt with 17 host communities across Yewa North and Ewekoro Local Government Areas of the state, saying they had greatly felt the impacts of the company through empowerment programmes and provision of infrastructure.

Mr. Nawabuddin told his guests that Dangote Cement Ibese Plant had been a major contributor to economic diversification efforts of both the state and federal governments by creating jobs, exporting cement and clinker to neighbouring countries to attract foreign exchange into the country, and paying humongous taxes and levies to the state and federal government.

The community engagement that held after the minister’s tour of the plant also saw the communities’ leaders thanking Dangote Cement for its Corporate Social Responsibilities, CSR, projects so far for the people of Yewa.

The Olu of Imasayi, Oba Kuoye Olalekan, a top monarch in Yewaland, expressed his subjects’ appreciation to Dangote Cement for its developmental strides in the area.

“Dangote Cement is the transformer and illumination of Yewaland,” he stated.

The federal government has advised state governments in frontline areas to take necessary measures towards mitigating the potential impact of Lagdo Dam floodgate.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, gave the advice while issuing flood warning alert during the meeting of presidential committee on coordination and implementation in Abuja.

Edu said, the call became necessary following an alert by the Cameroonian authorities to release the water from the country’s Lagdo Dam.

The minister who spoke at the instance of the Minister of Water Resources and that of Environment expressed the need for effective implementation of policies and rescue missions aimed at mitigating against the impacts of the flooding.

Edu, while acknowledging the state governments’ zeal in tackling emergencies, urged them to ensure immediate evacuation of Nigerians living in flood front areas to safer destinations.

READ ALSO: ‘Non-release of allocation’: LG boss to report Dapo Abiodun to EFCC, ICPC

“State Governments have done quite a number of preparedness; we also appeal to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) on the need to step up actions by ensuring immediate evacuation of Nigerians from various communities to safer destinations.

“Lagdo Dam floodgate has been opened by the Cameroonian authorities and that all the frontline states may experience flooding within the next seven days” she said.

She also pledged the readiness of the ministry to work with subnational and local governments towards providing shelters for the affected citizens because some of the people living in most of the communities who may be affected are afraid of losing their ancestral homes, despite the warning.

She assured Nigerians on the resolve of President Bola Tinubu-led administration to put necessary measures in place to safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians.

Also speaking, the Minister of Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, said the ministry had already activated the necessary flood warning alerts being released on hourly basis, especially on the water level of River Benue and River Niger as well as vulnerability level of the affected areas.

Salako also said the ministry had designed a veritable platform that would provide regular and real time information on the flood warning alerts without waiting for the ministry.

He noted that recommendations on long term measures and solutions would be presented to Mr. President as part of ongoing efforts towards finding lasting solution to the menace of flooding.

He also reiterated the resolve of the present administration towards working with Cameroon authorities towards ensuring that the impacts of the release of Lagdo Dam floodgate did not result in loss of lives and property as well as ensure that the damages were minimized.

Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, tasked Nigerians on the need to take necessary steps toward clearing drainages while government at all levels played their roles.

Utsev assured Nigerians that his ministry would on the long run ensure construction of dams as well as dredging of rivers across the country with the view to end the menace of annual flooding, which had led to loss of several lives and property.

He also noted that the ministry is already meeting with relevant stakeholders at various levels in the bid to control the waters.

The committee also assured Nigerians of its resolve to provide necessary medical support to Nigerians who might be affected by the flooding, including scourge of malaria and other water borne diseases.

The Cameroonian authorities said they would open the dam “in days ahead, due to heavy rainfall around the dam catchment area in Northern part of the country.”

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, NIMR, and other stakeholders in the country have launched the Canada-Africa Mpox Partnership, CAMP.

The event was aimed at curbing the spread of Mpox and study the dynamics of its transmission from humans to humans.

The other institutions in the project are University of Ilorin, Slum and Rural Health Initiative Network, SRHIN, Institute Of Human Virology In Nigeria and Maryland Global Initiative Corporation, MGIC.

The project is in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Health Research, CIHR, and the International Development Research Centre, IDRC.

During the event on Wednesday, Prof. Babatunde Salako, the Director-General of NIMR, said the Nigeria consortium would work with their Canadian partners to help inform the clinical and public health response to local and global epidemic of Mpox.

Salako said 68 researchers with multi-disciplinary expertise from Canada, Nigeria, the U.S. and the United Kingdom would work on the project that would involve community engagements from inception.

“The good thing about this project is that it will provide the needed information for stakeholders in the project to understand transmission dynamics and evaluate medical counter-measures of Mpox in Nigeria and Canada.

“The stakeholders include not just researchers but also the communities who will be participating in the project.

“If at the end of the project there is a very useful result, this can be translated in the communities to improve their health status,” he said.

The D-G, however, reiterated the need for a medical research council to fund research works peculiar to Nigeria.

He said: “Many nations have agencies that fund health research directly but we don’t have that here in Nigeria and that is why health research appears to have been funded poorly.

“The body funding the CAMP project is the Canadian Institute of Health Research; if we have such body, we will be able to fund research on health issues that affect us directly.”

Prof. Rosemary Audu, the Principal Investigator of CAMP Nigeria, said the project would focus on three topics across diverse epidemiological, geo-social and health system context involving Mpox transmission, treatment and vaccines.

Audi, who is also the Director of Research at NIMR, said the two central components of the CAMP project were multi-directional capacity building and community engagement.

“In the first sub-project, CAMP researchers will work to understand transmission from multiple angles and the second sub-project will involve conducting a random contrail trial to access the safety and effectiveness of the smallpox drug tecovirimat as treatment for the disease.

“The third sub-project which is the last, will focus on evaluating the role of imvamune vaccine to prevent Mpox infection in humans.

“We have also received ethical clearance from the National Health Insurance Ethics, NHREC, to commence field operation from April for 12 months period and we comment the Canadian institute for funding the project,” she said.

Also, Dr Evaezi Okpokoro, a public health physician who specialises on infectious diseases, presented the project work plan during the event.

Okpokoro, also a researcher at the Institute of Human Virology, said the investigators would investigate to understand the mechanism of transmission in comparison with the Canadian group.

He added that the CAMP Nigeria team would co-develop regional capacity around rapid clinical trials, biostatistics and mathematical remodelling which would be valuable in responding to future infectious disease challenges.

Authorities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, have advised members of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, not to allow themselves to be used by fifth columnists working for some disgruntled elements to disrupt the peace and harmony prevailing in the university.

The university has witnessed peace and harmony in the last five years under the pragmatic and visionary administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Felix Kolawole Salako.

FUNAAB VC, Salako

The advice was issued on Sunday sequel to the threat by NASU leadership in the university to commence a seven-day strike with effect from Monday, October 24, 2022, on the orders of its national body under the leadership of NASU Secretary-General, Mr Peters Adeyemi, alleging anti-NASU policies and undue interference in the union’s affairs by management.

According to sources, there are undercurrents behind the proposed strike which many alleged as moves to embarrass and humiliate the current Vice-Chancellor, barely one week to the completion of his five-year tenure which lapses on Monday October 31.

But the management of the institution, according to a press statement signed by the Registrar, Dr Bola Adekola, faulted the directive of the union’s national body.

FUNAAB management described as an illegality the action of the union over issues that are clearly local and were never brought to the attention of the university.

Said Dr Adekola: “This is clearly a violation of the extant rules and procedures for strike declaration through extant laws of the land… It is quite unfathomable that after an eight-month strike which paralysed Universities, NASU believes that declaring a local strike for promotion of a personal interest is justifiable.

“To set the record straight, some of the issues raised are clearly subjudice as they are before the Federal Court of Appeal, Ibadan. The decision of NASU to resort to strike on such issues is therefore a resort to self-help which is clearly ultra vires.

“We are taken aback by the half-truth being dished out on the issue relating to the discipline of some NASU members who violated the rules of the University in 2019 and were taken through the disciplinary process of the University using the extant rules and regulations.

READ ALSO: BREAKING: Soyinka hands over Ijegba Forestage’s custody to FUNAAB

“Even the local NASU officials were involved in the process for transparency. The Governing Council not only did justice to the matter but also took the appeal of the national body on the matter before it was rested since 2019. The University Council also reaffirmed its decision on the matter.

“It important to call the attention of the public to the fact that four of the issues raised by NASU national body for calling its members out on this proposed illegal action are just a smoke-screen for the real one which was to force and arm-twist the hand of Management to promote the former Chairman of NASU- FUNAAB and a current member of National Executive Committee of NASU, Mr Ishaq Odunjo, who couldn’t pass promotion interviews and competency test usually conducted by University officers aspiring for CONTISS 14 positions like some others who also took part in the processes.

“It is on record that NASU Headquaters led by Mr Peters Adeyemi had made several attempts in the past to dictate to Management on how to make Mr Odunjo a sacred cow to the extent of dictating where and where he should be posted to work in the university which was resisted by Management.

“This latest action is not different from all the earlier ones with the intention of forcing Management to give Mr Odunjo an undue promotion after a woeful performance at the promotional examinations. If this is not resisted, we shall get to a situation where student Union Leaders will also call out their members to force Management to award them First Class Degrees because they have the capacity to disrupt peace on Campus.

“Our advice to NASU- FUNAAB members is to ignore this latest attempt to use them to disrupt the smooth working relationships and the industrial peace on campus. It’s our hopes that NASU Headquarters will come and hold a constructive discussion with the University Management to get to know the truth of how happy the members of NASU FUNAAB is with the University Management as against the impression being given.”
