The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Ondo State, Mrs. Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, has admonished corps members to strive and achieve greatness by embracing the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme of the scheme, as the world awaits their shine.

The state coordinator gave the admonition to the 2024 Batch ‘C’ (Stream II) corps members deployed to Ondo State and those dislodged from Lagos State during the flag-off ceremony of SAED activities for the orientation course.

Bakare spoke passionately about the employment opportunities available to corps members willing to complement the credentials with the skills they have passion for.

According to her, the figures from the Office of the Bureau of Statistics showed that unemployment had been on the increase, and that had necessitated the NYSC to come up with the interventionist plan aimed at taking graduate youths off the streets.

“Gentlemen corps members, you need to appreciate the management of the National Youth Service Corps for establishing the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development SAED programme about thirteen (13) years ago to stem the tide of unemployment in the land. Since inception, several millions of Nigerians who have passed through the scheme are now captains of industries and entrepreneurs of international repute” she said.

She charged the members of the service corps to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the scheme through the Trainers and Facilitators “who are thoroughbred professionals while impacting them the required skills that will put them on the economic world map.”

READ ALSO: Offences: LASTMA captures 20,000 through TMS

She appealed to them to take seriously the in-camp training as that would provide them with basics of learning the skills they have passion for, and equally perfect such, during the post-camp training which they would be exposed to in the course of the service year.

While welcoming the future “corpreneurs,” the Assistant Director/Head, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme, Pastor (Mrs.) Jennifer Funmilola Dawodu admonished corps members not to exhibit complacency in the course of the programme.

Pastor Dawodu appreciated the camp management, especially the state coordinator, for providing the avenue for the SAED programme to thrive in Ondo State as well as Trainers/Facilitators who have agreed to invest massively in the patriotic graduate youths.

She outlined what the corps members stood to benefit from the programme such as grants, loans and information gathering on funding opportunities as well as gaining technical assistance in job search.

The Trainers/Facilitators thereafter introduced their skills, which included Agro-Allied, ICT, Creative Industry, Culinary and Catering Services, and Construction.

Others are Green Energy and Satellite Security Technology, Cleaning Services and Hygiene, Cosmetology, Education, Automobile and Delivery and Logistics.

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State Coordinator, Mr. Sam Amaramiro Pepple, has asserted that successful individuals are those who dare to press further and face life’s challenges on their way to achieving result.

Pepple made the assertion in his remarks at the closing ceremony of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme for the 2024 Batch ‘B’ (Stream 1) orientation course.

Pepple applauded the courage of those who competed in various sub-set skills, and asserted that NYSC remained the best training ground for graduate youths globally.

The NYSC Ondo State boss declared that NYSC had justified its establishment as it had evolved a pragmatic approach to youth empowerment and development which had over the years reduced unemployment in the land.

He called on corporate bodies, especially the Access Bank and philanthropists who sponsored most of the competition not to waiver in their support to the scheme, saying that NYSC was encouraged by their social corporate responsibility to the scheme.

The coordinator acknowledged the sacrifices made by all Trainers and Facilitators for their resilience and unwavering commitment to the growth and lauded development of the graduate youths.

The NYSC Ondo State helmsman equally lauded the supportive roles of all the camp officials at ensuring that the youth the programme is meant for enjoyed every bit of the Entrepreneurship Development Programme, EDP, motivational lectures as well as in-camp training with their presence.

READ ALSO: NPA: Tinubu appoints new managing director, board chairman

The Assistant Director/Head, SAED, Jennifer Funmilola Dawodu, admonished the corps members not to say bye to skill acquisition after the orientation course, and urged them to embrace post-camp training to perfect all what they had started and exposed to during the orientation course.

Dawodu did not fail to shower encomiums on the State Coordinator, who despite competing camp assignments, supported SAED wholeheartedly and created an enabling environment for them to operate.

She disclosed that 1275 corps members who enrolled for various skills gave good account of themselves whilst Catering Services, Hair Fascinator, Public Speaking, Fashion Design and Barbing were competed for during the Inter-Platoon competition.

The Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Ondo State, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, has assured corps members that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme established by the Scheme 12 years ago will take them to the promised land in terms of financial independence and economic viability.

The NYSC Ondo State boss gave the assurance while inspecting the SAED products put on display by the 2024 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 1) corps members during the exhibition and competition.

Ani, who was elated by what the corps members who joined various skills during the rigorous and extensive in-camp training showcased during the closing ceremony asserted that NYSC had laid solid foundation for the future of graduate youths.

“I am proud to say it to the world and announce it here today that NYSC is not only giving you the fish but has practically handed over to you all the apparatuses that you need to make an headway in the competitive world. Who would ever say that in less than three weeks training, you can be this creative? I am proud of you all and I am equally fulfilled though my joy will be boundless if you take the post-camp training seriously as it will further assist you in getting to your dream destination.”

The state coordinator disclosed that the in-camp training was highly subsidised by the management to serve as encouragement and to cushion the effects of any biases the members of the service corps may nurse against the programme.

“We have a good rapport and understanding with Trainers/Facilitators which means they would not exploit you as your seriousness and hard work will pave the way to your destination,” she said.

READ ALSO: Navy arrests 13 suspected crude oil thieves

She advised those who thought they were well connected and did not show interest in the SAED programme to have a rethink and embrace the post-camp training at their respective places of primary assignment while also discouraging them from putting all their eggs in one basket.

“NYSC has taught you how to fish and it is now left for you to spread your nets to gather what will stabilise you and make you independent job creators rather than a liability unto others.”

She continued, “We are not going to leave you alone to your destiny after camp as we have mapped out strategies and set all machineries in motion to monitor your activities and ensure that your plans materialise.”

The state coordinator admonished them to always let their Local Government Inspectors and SAED Schedule Officers be aware of any difficulty they might face during the post-camp training so as to promptly address it.

She congratulated all those who participated in the competition/exhibition highlighting that the foundation they laid for themselves would catapult them to greater heights in no too distant future.

The state coordinator did not fail to acknowledge the immense contributions of the SAED Committee on camp, the Heads of Committees as well as collaborating agencies for their unflinching support which culminated in the successes recorded during the orientation course.

In the course of the event, corps members with outstanding business plans were rewarded with support grants by Wema Bank Limited to help them plunge into the entrepreneurship world.

The glory in this category resided with a member of the Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS), Ifere Wofai Ubi-Omini, who beat others to clinch the first position.

Others who made it to the podium were Godday Chinwendu Nwachukwu who came second while Grace Comfort Emmanuel took the third position in a contest that saw Ijeoma Thelma Agu come fourth.

Earlier, an Assistant Director/Head, SAED, Mr. Olugbenga Justus Adefehinti, appreciated all the Trainers/Facilitators for their massive investment in the lives of the corps members, praying that their labour would not be in vain.

Adefehinti used the occasion to enjoin the graduate youths to be encouraged and leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the challenges facing the nation, since it is global phenomenon, be harnessed as an opportunity to showcase their potentials and ingenuity.

The Inter-Platoon Exhibition/Competition was competed for in five skills sub-set namely Hat/Fascinator; Catering and Confectionery; Fashion and Design; Barbing as well as Make-over and Gele tying.

A retired Director of the National Youth Service Corps, Chief Gabriel Ojo Alonge, has described the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme of the scheme as the life wire to economic emancipation which all corps members must key into.

Alonge, who retired as Director, Procurement Department about 10 years ago stated this while delivering motivational lecture to the 2023 Batch ‘B’ (Stream 1) corps members at NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.

According to the one time State NYSC Award Winner, a feat which fetched him automatic employment into the noble Scheme as an Inspector II at the end of 1980/81 service year in Borno State, Alonge urged the members of the service corps to take advantage of the intervention to turn around their fortunes during and after the service year.

“My dear children, your parents and guardians have offered you education which will give you leverage in the society while the NYSC as a noble organisation has invested in your future by bringing to your doorstep the intervention known as SAED programme which has been designed to fortify you against joblessness and poverty during and after the service year.

“There was no such opportunity during our time but corps members mobilised into the scheme since 11 years ago have been exposed to this gold mine which has moved several thousands of graduate youths away from the streets into becoming entrepreneurs, captains of industries as well as employers of labour,” he said.

The motivational speaker who served as State Coordinator in some states notably Abia and Plateau advised the corps members to take the in-camp training conscientiously as the foundation laid during the orientation course would be built upon in the course of the service year.

READ ALSO: My govt will achieve double-digit economic growth -Tinubu

The recipient of 1997 NYSC Staff Merit Award in the Inspectorate Cadre asserted that the legion of graduate youths passing through the NYSC have requisite knowledge, experience and competence to transform the nation’s economic hub which will be an envy in the comity of nations.

Alonge cautioned members of the service corps to be wary of what they proclaim with their mouth because according to biblical injunction, ‘out of the abundance of heart, the mouth speaks’.

Alonge challenged the corps members to think of what they could do for the country and make it grow and develop.

He also publicly acknowledged the immense contributions of the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, to youth development in the country.

“Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani is an administrator of sound character and woman of integrity who has brought her experience and administrative competence to bear on the development of the Scheme in Ondo State. I follow the activities of NYSC Ondo State on social media and I can conveniently say that her positive achievements speak volume,” he said.

“I cannot expect less from her because we worked together for several years at the Directorate Headquarters, Abuja and she displayed great acumen. Apart from this fact, she is married to Chief Anthony Ani, a retired director of the scheme as well who is known in the NYSC family as an administrator of administrators who is very cerebral and scholarly.”

Earlier in her opening remarks, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani said NYSC was blessed to have Chief (Evang) Alonge as one of the forthright and straightforward personalities who gave his entire working life building and mentoring the younger generations.

“Gentlemen corps members, it is a thing of joy and blessing to have a personality of Chief (Evang) Alonge in your midst today who rose through the ranks and broke all barriers to get to the top. You will be doing yourselves great harm if you fail to drink from his wealth of experience. He is fully loaded with ideas capable of changing your life for the better and it is my wish that you take advantage of his motivational lecture,” she said.

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has asserted that academic qualifications with acquisition of skills will guarantee a secure future for graduate youths.

Ani made the assertion when she flagged-off the opening ceremony of 2023 Batch ‘A’ (Stream II) Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, in-camp programme.

She said the NYSC management introduced the intervention in 2012 as a way of reducing the high unemployment rate in the country which she said had greatly eroded the confidence of the graduate youths in the system.

“It is to efface this bleak and dreary picture that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme was carefully designed in 2012 to equip corps members with hands-on training and entrepreneurship skill in order to be self-reliant and to contribute to the accelerated growth of the nation’s economy.

“My vibrant and ever resourceful children I am proud of, you are an extremely lucky set of people to benefit from this ingenuity of the NYSC. The noble scheme has designed an in-camp training which is relatively free for you to acquire a skill or that will make you independent and indispensable during and after the service year.

“Do not despise the little beginning and I want you to take advantage of the opportunity offered you to shift from looking for a paid job into becoming employers of labour. Great Entrepreneurs like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chief Femi Otedola, Otunba Mike Adenuga and Tony Elumelu started small but today, they have become household names in the country and outside the shores of African continent.”

She stated that the unemployment rate in the country is in the region of 37.7 per cent and might rise to 41 per cent in 2023 while available data showed that most young graduates lacked the requisite practical skills to compete for available jobs nationally and internationally.

According to the state coordinator, SAED programme was designed to implement in-camp training for nine days, at no cost and post-camp training for the rest of the service year.

She advised them to contact their local government inspector, zonal inspector or head of SAED for proper guidance on how to locate and engage the trainers after the orientation camp.

The NYSC Ondo State boss announced that presently the programme had 12 skills which included Agro-Allied, Food Processing and Preservation, Power and Energy, Construction, Automobile, Education but added that plans had reached advanced stage to add more skills.

“I am glad to inform you that we have successfully reviewed the skill-sets and have added all those contemporary skills which are in demand world over, including some of the 21st Century information tech skills. Please, be assured that very soon these skills will be unveiled to you and I want to encourage you to latch on this opportunity instead of waiting for elusive white collar jobs.”

The NYSC helmsman in the state disclosed that NYSC management in collaboration with financial institutions and empowerment organisations were making available grants and other loans available to corps members with bankable proposal to launch them into the world of opportunities.

The Assistant Director/Head, SAED, Mr. Olugbenga Justus Adefehinti, warned the corps members not to allow the opportunity to pass them by as they are academically qualified and privileged to benefit from the intervention.

The trainers/facilitators were introduced to the corps members to make an informed decision of which of the skills they had passion for while ex-corps and serving corps members shared their testimonies and the opportunity they had accessed for keying in into the programme.

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has admonished corps members to be committed to Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, training rather than allow the present circumstances to hinder their reasoning.

The state coordinator made the admonition while flagging off 2022 Batch ‘C’ (Stream II) SAED activities at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.

Ani said that prospective corps members should be wealth creators and not be pensive, disillusioned or frustrated youths pounding the streets of major cities looking for elusive jobs.

“My dear children in the service to the fatherland, NYSC has provided you with enduring legacy known as Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme to make you prepare for the future which we all know is in your hands”.

“The global economy is nothing to cheer about presently but NYSC through her deliberate and extensively youth-friendly programme came up with fantastic intervention known as SAED ten years ago to train and empower members of the service corps to be financially independent and job creators during and after the service year.”

The NYSC Ondo State boss praised the ingenuity of the scheme for thinking outside the box to make teeming graduate youths discover themselves and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product, GDP, of the country.

“Fellow compatriots, you have potentials in untapped human capital, energy, resourcefulness, creativity and adaptive ability. Participation in this programme is a rare privilege for you to give these positive attributes full expression in order to blossom and find fulfillment.”

She disclosed that corps participants will find opportunities to be economically active as entrepreneurs or be self-employed in their own business/profession if they embrace any of the 12 business skills approved by the NYSC management.

“A twenty eight hour period in nine days has been dedicated to the SAED training in the twenty-one (21) days orientation course. You will be taught what a business is, who the entrepreneur is and what is required to be successful. You will also learn some foundation skills you need in business such as personal qualities like taking responsibility, leadership, ethics and management skills,” she said.

The state coordinator disclosed that NYSC had created opportunities for financing of corps business proposals through many channels and urged them to leverage on the positive disposition of the scheme and create names and brands for themselves.

The Assistant Director/Head SAED, Prince Olugbenga Justus Adefehinti, admonished the prospective corps members on the need to embrace the intervention which is primarily designed to reduce graduate unemployment and means of eradicating poverty in the society.

Prince Adefehinti charged the prospective corps members to be independent enough to choose a skill or vocation and not follow the paths of friends or colleagues.

The Trainers/Facilitators introduced their skills and encouraged the corps participants to patronise them for a guaranteed future.

The Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, came to being through a pragmatic approach in order to better the lot of corps members.

Director, Audit at the Directorate Headquarters of the NYSC, Mr. Leke Abiodun, made the declaration on Friday while addressing the 2022 Batch ‘B’ (Stream II) corps members at the orientation camp, Ikare-Akoko in Ondo State.

He stated that in order to appreciate the ingenuity and creativity of the scheme, corps members should take seriously the programme so that the labour invested in its establishment ten years ago would not be in vain.

While stressing that NYSC had factored in every corps member into the intervention, he appealed to them to see the programme as invaluable contribution aimed at making them a great and successful individual who would remain grateful to the federal government for the establishment of the NYSC.

“Gentlemen corps members, it is instructive to let you know that NYSC is taking the SAED to enviable height and I want to say here that immediately the NYSC Trust Fund bill receives the blessings of Mr. President, the scheme will be fully prepared to enhance and empower as many that are ready to make a living from the skills acquired during the service year.

“Do not see the programme as a waste of time or your participation as a forced responsibility which must be fulfilled as part of orientation course content, but rather invest your time and resources wholly in it to have an edge in the labour market. Those who shared our vision from the time the programme was established till date have good testimonies to tell and I want you to join the winning team,” he said.

The director whose visit of oversight function to the camp coincided with the closing ceremony of SAED activities asserted that service year should be a period of personal investment as well as impact on host communities.

“My dear compatriots in the service to the fatherland, period of national service is not a time to gallivant aimlessly but to sit down, invest in your personal development as well as make a huge impact on your host communities,” he said.

In her welcome address, the state coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, thanked the Director of Audit for coming during the auspicious occasion to expose the corps members to the SAED programme.

She said all the registered corps members took active part in the in-camp training with much vigour and commitment and that that had encouraged the NYSC management in Ondo State to incorporate more skills into the competition/exhibition.

The Head, SAED programme who was represented by Mrs. Olubunmi Ayodele, appreciated all the sponsors and trainers for committing their respective time and investment to make the programme a success.

Different sub skill sets showcased what they learnt during the in-camp training and made presentations to Branches and Units in which OBS received a burglar proof donated by Fabrication and Welding sub set.

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, has charged graduate youths to allow the benefits derivable from the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme to define what they want to be.

Ani made the statement when she flagged off the SAED activities for the 2021 Batch ‘B’ (Stream II) service year at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.

She said that prospective corps members should enhance their marketability by embracing the skill acquisition of the NYSC which was designed to reduce to the barest minimum unemployment rate in the country.

“Prospective corps members, the reality on ground shows that the various academic certificates you are holding needs to be enhanced so that you can become employers of labour and not job seekers. Your education will stand in good stead to navigate through the uncertain economic environment which has hampered human activities.

“NYSC in her wisdom has come up with a lasting solution that will encourage members of the service corps to key into SAED components of the orientation course and learn skills or vocations that will make you independent while in service and transform your lives as captains of industries and established entrepreneurs in the foreseeable future”.

She encouraged the prospective corps members with the success story of great entrepreneur like Tony Elumelu who had a turn-around during his service year.

“The population of Nigeria is put at over 200 million and the jobs for the productive strata of the society, that is people within the range of 25 and 60 years are not readily available but you can take yourself and your loved ones out of poverty just like many who embraced SAED and today, they have signatures in establishments that are employing several thousands of Nigeria,” she concluded.

In her welcome remarks, the Assistant Director/Head, SAED, Mrs. Itohan Ehimwenma, expressed worries over the rate of unemployment which has grown beyond 22% according to 2020 statistics released by Bureau of Statistics of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

Mrs. Ehimwenma said that the prospective corps members should invest their time on the in-camp and post-camp trainings so that they would have something to lean on when the reality of the times dawned on them.

She appreciated all the Trainers and Facilitators for the individual sacrifices and commitment they put into training the members of the service corps to become useful and reliable members of the society.

The flag off ceremony witnessed the testimonies from serving and ex-corps members who are doing well in their chosen skills and vocations.

The State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, has told corps members that self-determination is the only key to their becoming successful.

Ani made the remark during the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, exhibition/closing ceremony held for the 2021 Batch ‘B’ (Stream 1) orientation course.

She said the economic activities and business climate in the country as well as globally had become so challenging and highly competitive that it required focus and determination to make headway.

“My treasured children in the national service, I need to let you know that grass is not greener on the other side as we are made to believe and for you to succeed in whatever you lay your hands on, you must be pragmatic and dynamic in your approach.

“NYSC has created a pathway for you to tread and be successful, and now the onus lies on you to see the SAED programme as a profitable and rewarding, economic venture which you must not allow to pass you by,” she said.

She advised members of the service corps to prepare for the post-camp training which she said would be comprehensive and very detailed with ample opportunity to practicalise very elaborately what they started in camp.

“Gentlemen corps members, what you started here as in-camp training is an elementary compared to detailed and very comprehensive post-camp training you will be exposed to and I want to assure those who painstakingly follow the training and make the necessary sacrifice, the sky would be a starting point.

“This programme you are all enjoying and we are begging you to embrace was not available during our own service year, otherwise many of us who took up appointment into the Federal Civil Service would have by now be captains of industries, outstanding entrepreneurs and employers of labour,” she said.

Ani charged the corps members to look beyond what the monthly allowance could bring to them but to be a specialist in their chosen skills / vocations and vigorously pursue their passion.

The state coordinator appreciated the facilitators for being hardworking, dutiful and committed towards giving the best to the corps members and for showing lots of love and understanding with the management.

In her remarks, the Assistant Director/Head SAED, Mrs. Itohan Ehimwenma, thanked all the collaborators for identifying with the programme in the Ondo State and sought for more synergy to achieve more.

Ehimwenma equally acknowledged the immense support of the state coordinator for creating enabling environment for the SAED branch to operate and other camp officials for standing by them throughout the period of the in-camp training.

In the inter-platoon skill competition under food processing, corps member, Orugbani, Blessing John of number 10 platoon won the first prize while Agozia, Edna Ekata of number 9 platoon and Aiyedero, Temitope Elizabeth of number 6 platoon came second and third respectively.

In Fashion and Design, corps member Adebayo, Mercy Omowumi of number 6 platoon beat Eziagulu, Anthony Michael of number 3 platoon to second place while George, Ejimchi Kingsley came third.
