The Flying Antelopes dictated the tempo from kick-off, forcing the visitors deep into their half and thrilling home supporters with early attacking pressure.

Wing-back Kenneth Igboke opened scoring in the ninth minute, sending the home crowd into wild celebration.

Two minutes later, Chigozie Iwundu doubled the lead in the 11th minute, further electrifying the stadium.

Remo Stars responded late in the first half, as E. Kingue scored in added time to reduce the deficit before the interval.

After the restart, Remo searched for an equaliser, but Rangers struck again through Wisdom Ebirim in the 62nd minute to extend the lead to 3–1.

Igboke completed his brace in the 90th minute, sealing a commanding 4–1 victory and helping Rangers maintain second place with 50 points.

The win keeps Rangers firmly in contention for continental qualification next season.

Remo Stars coach, Usman Abdallah, said his side played well but were unfortunate to lose by such a margin.

“We will keep fighting till the end; there is still time for us to make it, and I remain positive,” he said.

Rangers’ stand-in coach, Ekene Kenedilichukwu, praised both teams and commended his players for their determination.

“Remo are NPFL champions and difficult opponents. I commend my boys for getting the job done. It is a sweet victory and I am happy,” he said.

He led Enyimba F.C. to the NPFL title in 2018/19 and also guided the People’s Elephant to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals.

He has also worked across other NPFL teams including Kano Pillars, Katsina United and Wikki Tourists.

At the national team level, he served as an assistant coach for the Super Eagles under Jose Peseiro.

The Oga Boys broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Alfred Odinaka fired a fierce half-volley into the bottom corner after a blocked free kick.

Ikorodu City pressed for a second goal through high-intensity counter-attacks, but Remo Stars’ defence stood firm to deny further scoring opportunities.

Speaking after the match, Remo Stars coach, Sulaiman Folarin, described the defeat as unfortunate, insisting his side deserved a better outcome.

“We are unfortunate not to have won this game because we came with the mindset of winning.

“The boys did their best, but a moment of lost concentration cost us dearly. We played well against Ikorodu City,” Folarin said.

Khalifat took the lead in the 12th minute through Henry Ezeonye from a spot kick when he was fouled by the goalkeeper, Sahbiru Abiola.

Ibrahim Abubakar equalised the game for Remo Stars after the break on the 68th minute with a header to give the visitors a lifeline.

Remo Stars turned the game on Khalifat head on in the 78th minute as Nicholas Samson made it 2-1 for the league defending champions, from a goal mouth scramble.

Remo Assistant Coach, Sulaiman Kamil, said it would be hard for his team to lose a match on a good pitch because the team built the ball from the back.

“We always stick to our game plan for each match and are all out to win each match, be it against Enyimba or any other team.

“Remo Stars FC has a good structure and that is what has been sustaining us every season and we are determined to keep wining matches,” Kamil said.

Kun Khalifat coach, Obinna Ozoho, said the day was not favourable to his team and believed they had a lot to do and learn in the course of the league.

“First of all, we are going home to work on our cohesion, which was the major set back we have in the match against Remo Stars.

“I believe we can still come good in the league because it is a marathon and every team cannot play like Remo Stars,” he said.

The result pushed Remo Stars to fourth position with four points and down Kun Khalifat to 14th with a point after two matches.

Ikorodu City played 2-2 with Shooting Stars in the first match and also earned a technical victory over Rivers United to qualify for the final.

Smart City however defeated 36 Lions 3-1 and Remo Stars 1-0 to book a final berth.

According to the organisers of the ongoing competition at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, Enyimba of Aba and FC Kallon of Sierra Leone pulled out of the tournament only after the draw of the event was made last week.

Executive Director, Publicity and Strategy for the Local Organising Committee of the EIC, Onome Obruthe, said the late withdrawals would not affect the tournament in anyway because there were strategic plans on the ground to cover up for such.

“We had some teams on our standby list with understanding and so two of them are in now and we are already having an exciting time in Lagos.

“We have Remo Stars and Rivers United in the competition and they both finished first and second in the Nigeria Professional Football League.  There are also two other top flight teams –Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars. The opening game between these two teams was a big spectacle and so we are on course.”

On Sunday, host team, Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars settled for a 2-2 draw in the opener which kept many spectators at the edge of their seats for the 90 minutes duration.

The two new entrants, Smart City and 36 Lions were on duty in a late match with results being awaited as at press time.

According to the reversed fixtures released on Monday, Shooting Stars will clash with Rivers United in a crunch encounter.

Rivers United coach, George Finidi, has said the Garden City Boys would approach the competition with all the seriousness it deserved.

According to Inside Rivers United FC, the former international stated that the EIC was a good opportunity to evaluate the fitness of the players and overall readiness for the new season.

Speaking during a press parley in Lagos on Friday, the Executive Director, Publicity and Strategy for the Local Organising Committee of the EIC, Onome Obruthe, said two clubs from Benin Republic and Ghana pulled out due to other pressing issues with only FC Kallon of Sierra Leone joining other five clubs from Nigeria.

Ikorodu City, which is the host of the competition, was joined with other super power in the Nigeria Premier Football League like Shooting Stars, Remo Stars, Rivers United and Enyimba.

In the draws conducted on Friday, Ikorodu City, Shooting Stars and Rivers United are in Group A while FC Kallon would be joined in Group B by Remo Stars and Enyimba.

According to Obruthe, they are looking forward to an interesting tournament with Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars renewing their SouthWest rivalry on the opening day of the pre-season.

Also present at the presser were representatives of some of the sponsors with MTN, Betking and others alongside the Lagos State Football Association to lend their support to the international tournament.

The representative of MTN, Friday Okuwe, who is the Senior Manager, Brands & Communications at the company, said they would continue to support football in Nigeria as they believed one of the things that brought Nigerians together was football hence their involvement in a project like Eko International Cup.

“We want to stage a befitting event and that is why we have to shift the timing to suit the logistics of the participating teams.”

FC Kallon of Sierra Leone and Accra Heart of Oaks, Ghana are some of the teams expected to be in Lagos for the pre-season tourney.

Remo Stars, Ikorodu City, Shooting Stars and Enyimba of Aba are the domestic teams that have confirmed readiness to take part in the competition.

“Nothing will affect the fun we intend to bring to Lagos football fans. It is only one week delay and all will be fine with the new timing,” Obruthe added.

They are Remo Stars, Ikorodu United, Shooting Stars and Enyimba of Aba.

The four teams expected from other parts of the continent are FC Kallon of Sierra Leone, Accra Hearts of Oak, Ghana, SuperSports United FC of South Africa and FC Dadje of Republic of Benin.

Only recently, the organisers of the highly anticipated tournament got confirmation from the top management of Remo Stars about the readiness of the team to take part in the competition.

It was further revealed that Remo Stars management was already working on strengthening the team in readiness for the continental assignment of the league champions.

“On our part, we are working hard with the Lagos State government to make this tournament have a good impact on the teams and all the participants as a whole including the spectators,” Obruthe stated.

In the encounter which took place at Ikenne, Ogun State, Olamilekan Adedayo registered his name in Remo Stars’ history as he scored the only goal.
