The Police Command in Ondo State has said that one Abdullahi Saliu of Top Quality Hotel has been apprehended for parading himself as a Colonel in the Nigerian Army.

DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the command’s spokesperson, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Akure.

Ayanlade attributed the breakthrough to part of the command’s notable record in the fight against crime and fraudulent activities in the state.

According to him, the suspect defrauded two victims, Oshoade Janet ‘f’ and Daisi Remilekun Joy ‘f’, under the false pretext of securing employment for their sons in the Nigeria Customs and Immigration Services.

“Through this fraudulent scheme, he (Saliu) obtained the sum of N1,377,000, which he subsequently converted to his use.

“Investigations further revealed that the suspect’s operations cut across state lines, with victims traced to Edo, Delta, Kogi and Ondo states.

“He (suspect) has long been on the command’s watchlist as a notorious job racketeer, known for impersonating senior officers of different security agencies.

“His disguise and fraudulent claims include presenting himself as a Colonel in the Nigerian Army, a Naval officer, a senior Immigration and Customs officer, among others.

“The behaviour is all in a bid to defraud unsuspecting citizens of their hard-earned money,” Ayanlade said.

The command’s spokesperson also said the suspect had appeared before an Akure Magistrate’s Court for appropriate prosecution.

According to him, the arrest represents one of the several cases successfully cracked in recent times by the Police Command in Ondo State.

“The command seizes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the lives, properties and interests of all residents, while ensuring that fraudsters and criminally-minded elements are brought to justice.

“We also commend the visionary leadership and morale-boosting initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, whose strategic direction continues to inspire and empower the command in achieving these successes,” he said.

The family of late Remilekun Toyosi Meshioye, a Nigerian citizen, who died aboard Egyptair on September 4, 2023 in Cairo on her way to London for studies, has announced her burial plans with the repatriation of the body back to Lagos on Wednesday.

In a statement, Abdur-Rahman Balogun Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, on Monday, said the family had rolled out a three-day burial programme.

According to the programme being coordinated by her sister, Mrs Lola Olaniyi-Alabi, the body would arrive Lagos on Wednesday afternoon from Cairo.

Thereafter, there will be service of songs at the Winners Chapel Ogba, Lagos on Thursday by 4 p.m. while the burial will hold at Matori Cemetery Ladipo near Oshodi Bus Terminus, Lagos at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Lola said the family has decided to repatriate the body of late Remilekun back home for burial following the refusal of Egyptair management to accept full responsibility for what happened to its passenger.

She said the family had written series of petitions to Egyptair and its management but had refused to even condole them up till the moment let alone accept the responsibility of bringing the corpse back in line with global aviation rules.

Worried by the lack of response of EgyptAir management on the death of a Nigerian, Ms Remilekun Toyosi Meshioye, aboard the airline on September 4, 2023, the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has demanded for justice from the airline.

In a letter she personally signed and was delivered by the commission’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun to Mr Majdi Al Aridi, the General Manager of the airline in Abuja office, she described the sudden death of Remilekun as sad and painful.

Dabiri-Erewa in the petition stated that Remilekuni’s case was drawn to the attention of NIDCOM in a petition sent by Mrs Olufunmilola Olaniyi-Alabi, her elder sister based in United Kingdom on behalf of the family to the commission.

READ ALSO: 2023 budget: Lagos commences consultation with stakeholders

She said that since the death of Remilekun aboard the airline from Lagos to Cairo, the management of the EgyptAir had not deemed it fit to contact any member of the family or her next of kin as contained in her particulars before boarding the aircraft.

“It is surprising that EgyptAir management has not deemed it fit to contact any members of Remilekun family to break the sad news to them or condole with them. It has not responded as well to NIDCOM petition since Wednesday Sept. 13, 2023,” the statement reads in part.

On behalf of the family and the Federal Government of Nigeria, the commission is demanding for full disclosure that led to the sudden death of Ms. Remilekun Toyosi Meshioye aboard Egyptair on that fateful day.

Dabiri-Erewa, who has since condoled the family and prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased, assured them that justice would be served in memory of Remilekun.

Remilekun, 41, who was billed for London to resume for her studies, was said to have left Lagos for London onboard Egypt Air MS 876 flight to Cairo on Monday September 4, via Murtala Muhammad International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, but allegedly took ill on board and brought out dead from the aircraft at Cairo International Airport.

The family, according to Mrs Olufunmilola Olaniyi-Alabi, said the airline didn’t inform them, but rather they got a message from the Nigeria consular office in Cairo informing them of her death on board the flight.

“Please we need to know what exactly happened to Remilekun and how to get her corpse back to Nigeria for a peaceful burial as well as all her belongings in the custody of the airline.”
