First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on women in leadership positions to work harder and ensure that they make life easier for other women, through economic empowerment and mentorship.

She made the call when the Forum of Female Chief Executives Officers of Government Agencies and Organisations paid her a visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu who described the CEO’s as trail blazers who fit perfectly into their roles said they had a duty to replicate themselves in younger women.

“Birth yourselves in others. Look for them to mentor them. Replicate yourself in other women and that is the way we would be strong.

“Make yourselves unforgettable by the things you do outside your office,” she said.

She reminded the forum of great matriarchs like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, Gambo Sawaba, Abibat Mogaji and others, noting that they did a lot for Nigerian women by coming together and speaking up when needed.

“We have to come together, better and stronger than them. We have to ensure that we make life easier for women. Mentor young women, give scholarships, take one person through life. Don’t look for the volume”.

On her decision to call for partnership in the completion of the national library, the First Lady said the project would go a long way in helping indigent students in their educational pursuit.

In her remarks, the leader of the Forum, Director General of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, emphasized that they did not take the opportunity to serve the nation lightly and would continue to champion the cause of good governance and service to the people.

Her words: “As a group, Your Excellency, we do not take our mandates lightly and are sincerely grateful to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for deeming us fit and proper to hold our respective offices, and that is why we are here to pledge our support to the Administration and to you as the First Lady of the Nation. “We commend your Renewed Hope Initiatives. Your dedication to women’s empowerment is truly inspiring. Your efforts at women’s inclusion and ensuring women’s voices are heard are noteworthy.
President Tinubu and the First Lady had congratulated the Barcelona Femeni star on winning the best African female footballer of the year for the sixth time.

The president and the First Lady commended Oshoala for distinguishing herself in the sport, applauding her significant contributions to women’s football on the continent.

“Nigerian women will always have a pride of place in the world. What our ladies have achieved in football, our women are achieving in all fields of endeavour around the world—rising to the top and demonstrating the best of the Nigerian character of excellence, tenacity, ingenuity, and resilience,” the president said.

Cognizant of the feats of star sprinter, Tobi Amusan, and the presence of multiple Nigerian women on the Forbes’ ‘2023 World’s 100 Most Powerful Women,’ List, including media mogul, Ms. Mo Abudu, and Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the president and the First Lady assured Oshoala of the nation’s continued support for her and other Nigerian women striving for excellence in their chosen paths.

Speaking to journalists after the warm reception, Oshoala said: ”I want to appreciate the President and the First Lady for giving me the opportunity to present the award to them. During the last World Cup, we had a couple of issues, and they intervened and have been very supportive to the girls, even after the competition.”

Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, has delivered an intervention that will bolster education in the underserved Ogombo community, Eti Osa area of Lagos State.

The Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, led by the wife of the governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, built the first senior secondary school in the community to address the plight of deprived pupils, who had to trek long distances from their homes to senior secondary schools in neighbouring towns.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, inaugurated the fully equipped three-floor structure completed with 15 ultra-modern classrooms and 30 water system toilets.

The school was built by COWLSO in partnership with the State Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS, to support the academic output of the existing Ogombo Junior Grammar School.

The school was designed with state-of-the-art libraries, laboratories, Information and Communication Technology, ICT, department, offices for teaching and management staff, as well as equipped sick bay.

Following the inauguration of the edifice, COWLSO handed over the school to the state government for operation and administration.

It was all excitement for parents, teachers, pupils and traditional chiefs in the community, who trooped out in their numbers to mark the project’s inauguration.

The initiative allows for a seamless progression of pupils from junior to senior secondary school within the same environment, thereby eliminating the inconvenience of pupils of Ogombo community undertaking long journey to schools in neighbouring communities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the intervention as “outstanding”, noting that the project would bolster his administration’s drive to improve access to education and raise the bar of academic excellence in the state.

He said COWLSO had continued to be a dependable partner in actualising the vision of the state government in education and technology – one of the pillars of his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda.

READ ALSO: EFCC arrests 80 suspected illegal miners in Kwara

The governor said: “Since 2000 when Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials was resuscitated by Her Excellency, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, who is now the First Lady of Nigeria, the body has played and continues to play a vital and complementary role to the efforts of the State Government. This is evident through its several initiatives that directly impact the lives of children, women, the elderly, the youth, the physically challenged and the less privileged. COWLSO’s initiatives, which cut across various sectors, have contributed to the growth and development of Lagos over the past two decades.

“The commissioning of this purpose built 15-classroom block is another success story in the efforts of our administration to provide sustainable infrastructure for effective learning and teaching in a conducive environment. This school project, comprising three floors, was designed in compliance with global standards and our administration’s policy thrust of not leaving anyone behind. Lagos State Government is grateful for this intervention by COWLSO. I extend our appreciation to the leadership and members of this noble association, past and present.”

Sanwo-Olu restated his commitment to providing modern infrastructure in public schools, pointing out that SCRPS and other intervention MDAs had not relented in the construction of new school blocks and classrooms across communities in need.

The governor disclosed that eight new school projects were awaiting commissioning at Ipaja Junior College, Isale Ilu Majiyagbe in Ipaja; Oriokuta Junior Secondary School in Ikorodu; Thogli Community Grammar School in Badagry; and Ilupeju Junior Grammar School in Oshodi.

His administration, he said, would leave no stone unturned in ensuring that public schools had quality facilities that would inspire excellent output by students and teachers in the state.

“In addition to the improved facilities, we are also equipping our teachers with modern methods and skills for better performance and greater job satisfaction. This we are undertaking under the EKO EXCEL programme. All these will go a long way in preparing our children for a future driven by knowledge and innovation, and help to actualise the vision of a Greater Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The First Lady said the COWLSO’s intervention was driven by its passion to support development programmes of the state government in disadvantaged areas, stressing that the Ogombo school project was informed by the need to address amenities shortfall in the community.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu said COWLSO swung into action to commence construction of the school in December 2021, following the discovery of shortage of education facilities in Ogombo town.

She said COWLSO provided the intervention in line with its founding objectives and to fulfil its pledge to the community.

The First Lady said the school project underscored the essence of inclusion in the Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, as it was designed with ramps from ground floor to the topmost floor to aid the movement of children and staff living with disabilities.

She said: “After the discovery of the challenges and moved by the plight of the deprived pupils, COWLSO swiftly intervened by embarking on this building project in line with the founding objectives of the committee to impact lives positively and contribute immensely to the political and socio-economic development of Lagos. To the Glory of God, the construction of the magnificent edifice was completed within 12 months.

“Our gratitude goes to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his keen interest and unflinching support since the inception of this project. This administration has greatly uplifted our efforts, particularly in the area of promoting child healthcare and education, empowering and generally improving the welfare of Lagosians. This project will enhance access to education for children in the community. It is my hope that all stakeholders in Ogombo Kingdom will be committed to the sustainability, marketability and maintenance of this school.”

The project supervisor and wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, said the school was built on 88 piles at a depth of 18m with 66 pile caps.

The facility, Mrs Hamzat disclosed, also has toilet provision for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) on all floors.

Member representing Eti Osa Constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, Hon. Noheem Adams, conveyed the town’s appreciation to COWLSO and the state government for the intervention, promising that the project would be sustained.

The high point was the cultural performance organised by pupils of the benefitting community in showing appreciation to COWLSO and the state government for the intervention.

Wife of the President-elect, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who represented her husband, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the inter-denominational Christian service has declared that the wealth of the country belongs to the people and her husband will make it work for the good of all citizens.

The First Lady-designate made the declaration on Sunday in Abuja during the Presidential Inauguration Inter-denominational Christian service at the Ecumenical Centre.

Mrs. Tinubu, in her remarks at the church service attended by top Christian leaders across the country, said God had been kind and already blessed her family such that they didn’t need to abuse the position of public trust that had been bestowed on her husband, but to only use the resources of the country to improve the lives of citizens.

“God has blessed my family. We don’t need to abuse the position of trust reposed in my husband. The resources of Nigeria is a commonwealth that belongs to the people and we are going to use it to better the lives of Nigerians,” she declared.

Senator Tinubu called on clergy men and women and leaders of all faiths to pray for the success of her husband and for the grace to lead the country aright, saying a season of Renewed Hope has dawned on the country and Nigeria shall be prosperous under the leadership of Asiwaju Tinubu, while describing herself as a silent worker who would work behind the scene to support her husband to succeed and serve the best interest of the country.

“We need your prayers. I call on Christian leaders all over Nigeria to please pray for us. Our country shall make progress and shall be the cynosure of all eyes among the comity of nations.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who attended the service with his wife, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, admonished the political, business and religious elite to work for the peace and prosperity of Nigeria, adding that God always spoke to nations through individuals.

Professor Osinbajo copiously quoted from the Bible to buttress his points with how God spoke to Abraham that he would make him the father of Nations.

Osinbajo also added that nations needed leaders that would be righteous and serve with honour and integrity because according to him, “righteousness exalts a nation.”

“Our political, business and religious elite must work for the peace and prosperity of Nigeria because God speaks to nations through individuals. We must work for the greatness of our country and pray that our leaders succeed. Nigeria needs leaders that will serve with honesty and integrity,” the Vice President said.

On the incoming administration, Professor Osinbajo prayed for the success of the Tinubu administration.

He urged all Nigerians to support and pray for the new administration so that Nigeria will continue to remain a great country.

“I pray for the success of the Tinubu administration. We must all support the incoming administration to succeed and it does not matter who we voted or didn’t vote for.”

In his sermon at the church service, General Overseer and Founder of Dominion Chapel International Ministry, Archbishop John Praise Daniel, emphasized the responsibilities of leadership in a country, stressing the need for the incoming president and other senior government officials to lead with integrity, fear of God, justice and compassion in the interest of the people whose hopes had been dashed many times.

The Interdenominational service, which commenced with prayers, hymns and worship reflecting various Christian denominations in the country, was attended by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and his wife, Mrs. Victoria Gowon; President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Daniel Okoh; Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha, and his wife, Mrs. Funmilayo Mustapha; wife of Speaker of House of Representatives, Mrs. Salamatu Gbajabiamila; Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare; former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and many other outgoing ministers, members of the National Assembly and traditional rulers

The Senate has considered a bill seeking to amend the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshots Act, 2017.

The bill among others, seeks to establish the Medical Emergency Assistance Fund to cover the treatment of victims of gunshot, knife wounds, and other life threatening emergencies.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos Central).

Leading debate on the principles of the bill, Tinubu said that the intent behind the Compulsory Treatment and Care for the Victims of Gunshots Act, 2017, was to enforce treatment for victims of gunshots injury.

She noted that prior to its enactment, victims of gunshot injuries were being refused treatment by hospitals, as a result of a misinterpretation of Section 4 of the robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act 1990.

The lawmaker, however, explained that the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of gunshot Act, 2017, provides that every hospital, public or private shall receive for treatment, with or without police clearance, with or without monetary deposit, persons with gunshot wounds, and criminalises contravention.

She noted that the Act provides a mechanism for reporting treatment of persons with gunshot wounds to police, and precludes persons from being the subject of embarrassing interrogation for helping victims.

“It’s however shocking that in spite of the Act, the flagrant disregard of human life continues unabated, it is particularly sad that we continue to let brilliant and skillful minds go to waste, in what are apparently avoidable deaths.

“In a country where emergency response is almost non-existent, and getting victims to hospital is already burdensome, it is sad that where the victims make it to a hospital alive, they are still denied treatment and left to die.

“This is not only barbaric and inhumane, it is a violation of Hippocratic oath which medical professionals swear to.

“The situation is further made worse by the fact that obtaining these police reports has been commercialized by some, thus ensuring that there is no quick and easy way to get it done,” the lawmaker said.

She recalled that on Friday, January 15, 2021, David Ntekim-Rex, a 22-year old Systems Engineer was on his way home from work and was attacked around Jibowu, Yaba, in the Lagos Central Senatorial District.

According to her, policemen, upon arrival at the crime scene, were said to be more concerned with whether he was a ‘Yahoo Boy’ and building a report than about saving David.

Tinubu added, “it is alleged that he was rushed to the Military Hospital, Yaba, where he was refused treatment on the basis that they could not ascertain whether or not he was a robber; and was subsequently moved to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where he was not attended to before he gave up the ghost.”

Narrating another incident that occurred in December 2019, the lawmaker lamented that the victim, Moradeun Balogun, bled to death after she was stabbed at Gbagada in Lagos State and refused care at the nearest hospital where she had rushed to for medical attention.

Tinubu explained that the Compulsory Treatment of Victims of Gunshot Injuries Act when amended, would give cover to victims of gunshot injuries, knife wounds, and other life threatening emergencies.

She explained that the amendment bill was predicated on a need to ensure that the Act, passed into law in 2017, addresses the purpose for its enactment.

Contributing to the debate, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, in supporting the bill said that providing treatment for victims of gunshot injuries would assist security agencies in securing information from such persons needed to curb criminality in the country.

“If you get a criminal who is injured and say you won’t treat him, let him die, he dies with an information that would have helped the security agencies curtail the reoccurrence of such criminality.

“As a nation that is looked at as the giant of Africa, we should set a good precedent that other nations in the African sub-region would follow,” he said.

On his part, Senator Ibikunle Amosun insisted that the sanctity of life must be protected at all cost, saying, “even if those people have committed those crimes, it is when they are alive that they can face the music, and others will learn from it.”

The bill after scaling second reading was referred by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, to the Joint Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; and Health (Secondary and Tertiary) for legislative inputs.

The joint committee was given four weeks to report back to the Senate.

Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, the Senate, has taken further steps towards strengthening the legal status for the country’s National Emergency Number 112, being implemented by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, through it’s Emergency Communication Centres (ECC).

The Senate Committee on Communications recently organised a one-day public hearing where stakeholders gathered to make valuable contributions and observations on two bills by the Senate Committee on Communications.

These are the Nigerian Postal Service Act (Repeal and Establishment) Bill, 2021 and the Nationwide Toll-Free Emergency Number (Establishment) Bill, 2021, being sponsored by Senator Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

The emergency number bill passed the second reading on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 and the recent Senate public hearing on the bill was to have extensive discussion towards making the bill more robust to ensure a more effective, uniform and well-coordinated national emergency number 112, when it is finally passed into law, similar to the 999 emergency number in the United Kingdom and 911 in the United States.

Speaking at the public hearing, Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan, stressed the desirability of the passing of such a bill into an Act of national Assembly, adding that the critical role of communication in modern day, especially in handling emergency situations could not be over-emphasized.

Similarly, the chairman of the Senate Committee, Oluremi Tinubu, said the bill, when passed, would establish the Nationwide Toll-Free Number as a primary emergency number and contact point for all emergency services in Nigeria, thereby harmonising the various emergency numbers in the country into one uniform number while, at the same time, empowering the NCC to supervise and ensure compliance.

Represented by his colleague, Senator Odebiyi Akinremi, Senator Amosun said the bill sought to make 112 the Emergency Number of Nigeria, stating that “this will enable citizens have access to quick and timely response in respect of all forms of emergency situations such as road accidents, fire outbreaks, burglary , medical emergencies and so on.’’

Also speaking, the Minister of Communications and Digital economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, commended the Senate for organising the public hearing.

The minister said while NCC had established functional ECCs across 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, efforts were in top gear to ensure ECC was established in the remaining 13 states of the federation for the processing of the emergency calls through the 112 Number.

At the public hearing, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, made a number of valuable recommendations that would make the bill, which he said might be cited as the ‘National Emergency Communication Act, 2021’ when passed into law, more effectual in terms of board composition, scope as well as ability to accommodate emergency services by different statutory and regulatory agencies.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has allayed the fears of Nigerians on the deployment of Fifth Generation, 5G, technology in Nigeria, clarifying that there is no known scientific evidence till date suggesting that 5G poses any risks to public health and safety.

Pantami stated this when he led the heads of agencies under his ministry to an investigative public hearing by the Senate Joint Committee on Communications; Science and Technology; Information and Communications Technology, ICT, and Cyber Crimes; and Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases, at the National Assembly Chamber in Abuja on Thursday, February 25, 2021.

The heads of agencies under the ministry, who were present at the hearing include the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta; Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi and the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellites Limited (NigComSat), Dr. Abimbola Alale.

Speaking at the public hearing, Pantami eloquently affirmed the findings from independent scientific reports published by the International Telecommunication Union, ITU, and the World Health Organisation, WHO, both agencies of the United Nations, UN, which clearly indicate that there is no health risks to human lives associated with the deployment of 5G.

The minister said after the initial approval by the president which led to the commencement, in 2019 of 5G trial in selected locations in the country and subsequent intervention of the National Assembly in 2020, seeking clarifications on probable health risks of 5G deployment, the ministry had so far undertaken wide-ranging stakeholder consultations to ascertain the safety of 5G networks.

Pantami explained that, having aligned with the ITU and WHO reports and studied 5G deployment situations in many advanced countries where it has been fully deployed without any health risks, the ministry can affirmatively say that there is no health risk to 5G networks.

“To this end, we are also working on a 5G deployment policy that will take care of all security, health and safety concerns of Nigerians and we will get the nod of the president, after all issues have been addressed before we proceed with our deployment, as we cannot afford to lag behind in the 5G revolution,” he said.

The minister clarified that 5G is an enhanced technology over the previous technologies of 4G, 3G and 2G, the three of which have more radiations than the 5G technology, adding that the “radiation from mobile technologies such as 5G is internationally certified by ITU and WHO as non-ionising, meaning such radiation does do not have harmful effect on human lives and it is far low compared with radiation from microwave oven that individuals use in their homes.”

Representatives of mobile networks operators, MNOs, telecom equipment vendors, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, especially the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement, NESREA, National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, NOTAP, among several others also spoke at the public hearing.

The stakeholders took turns to state their positions on 5G deployment and issues surrounding its health and safety concerns and almost unanimously aligned with the scientific reports from ITU and WHO cited by the minister.

Earlier in his address, the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmed Lawan, said the Senate resolved on May 5, 2020, that the joint committee should conduct the public hearing, following a motion of public importance and urgency by Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology to resolve all public health and safety concerns around 5G before NCC can proceed with its deployment in Nigeria.

After listening to all the views and submissions by the various stakeholders, the Lead Chairman of the Senate Joint Committee, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, said that the purpose of the public enquiry was meant to help clarify and allay the fears of any health concerns among Nigerians.

“We hope all the submissions here today which point to the same direction on the safety of 5G to human lives will put the mind of Nigerians at rest that there is nothing to fear. We also hope that Nigerians will be looking forward to having 5G deployed in Nigeria.”

She emphasised the commitment of the National Assembly to always take a neutral position on any issue generating public health, safety and security concerns among Nigerians until more clarifications are sought from concerned stakeholders.

The Nigerian Postal Services, NIPOST, on Tuesday got assurances of full legislative backings in its efforts to explore different business opportunities to reposition itself.

The assurances was given by the chairman, Senate Committee on Communication, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who led other members of the committee on an oversight visit to the headquarters of NIPOST.

The committee also told NIPOST that it could come forward with arguments capable of necessitating a review of the Finance Act which the organisation claimed was impeding its businesses.

Tinubu said the Senate would assist the organization in all areas of need especially in the areas of unbundling itself to break new grounds.

The Chairman of the Committee commended the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Dr. Ismail Adebayo Adewusi, for providing what he described as “pragmatic leadership” adding that in spite of the challenges faced by NIPOST, the Postmaster General was leading the management to think out of the box to get NIPOST to improve on its service delivery.

The committee commended the plan to float two companies, which are targeted at creating new business potential for the postal organisation.

Senator Tinubu said the committee was aware of the seeming difficulties that faced NIPOST but added that those ideas could serve as springboards to better corporate successes.

While stating that lawmaking was dynamic, the Senate chairman said acts that had been assented to could be re-examined, noting that there could be a review of the Finance Act recently assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele in his contribution, advocated that the Legal Department of NIPOST to come forward to the committee to enable clear the air in its argument on whether the Acts supported electronic stamps as against adhesive/postage stamps.

The Postmaster General had earlier in his address enumerated difficulties that he said impeded NIPOST in its duties, specifically citing the Finance Act.

He called for legislative support towards enactment of necessary legislation that would enhance the transformation of NIPOST in line with the present economic realities.
