The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced that Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, will begin on August 18 in Kwara State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Hale Longpet, disclosed this during a news conference in Ilorin on Monday.

Longpet said that the Electoral Act 2022, as amended, empowered the commission to issue regulations, guidelines or manuals for the purpose of the conduct of the registration of voters and revision of the register of voters.

He urged Nigerians to go for Online Pre-registration as from August 18, on its website http://www.cvr.inecnigeria.org.

The REC stressed that physical registration would begin from August 25, across all the 16 local government offices of INEC and head office.

He said that the potential registrants must be citizens of Nigeria and must have attained the age of 18 years on or before the registration day.

According to him, the CVR exercise shall be all year round for a period as may be determined by the Commission beginning at 9:00 a.m. and to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, while any person on queue as at 3:00 p.m. during the period shall be accepted for registration.

Longpet noted that the Permanent Voters Card, PVC, collected by voters before the 2023 general election stood at 1,537,275 which gave a collection percentage of 90.65 per cent.

The REC warned that the Electoral Umpire would not tolerate under-aged and double registration.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Ondo State, Barr. Oluwatoyin Babalola has said that the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, scheme remains the most critical and strategic among its stakeholders.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner made the statement when she played host to the new NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Amaramiro Pepple, at the INEC’s state office in Akure.

Babalola who asserted that the scheme had been supplying dedicated, disciplined and committed members of the service corps for the execution of elections in the state said that it was an incontrovertible fact that NYSC had array of mobile and intelligent graduate youths who were versatile in the use of information technology, which she confirmed as a plus to the electoral body.

“The state coordinator, I want to congratulate you on your well-deserved appointment as the new NYSC boss in the Sunshine State. I want to pray that as your predecessors succeeded, you will equally succeed in this challenging task. Meanwhile, I want to say that I had useful deliberations with your immediate predecessor and I strongly believe that we shall build on the synergy already established.

“NYSC has been a formidable and dependable ally to INEC because of the quality of corps members and staff that are continually released to the electoral body to serve as ad-hoc staff and I want to say that INEC is impressed with the conduct of the personnel, especially the corps members.”

READ ALSO: 2023: Zenith Bank achieves impressive triple-digit topline and bottomline growth

The INEC boss gave the assurance that the electoral umpire would continue to provide adequate security and appreciable welfare in line with the modern day reality to those that would be engaged.

“I am not unaware that in line with memorandum of understanding (MOU) which the INEC entered into with the National Youth Service Corps in which coincidentally I was involved in drafting and perfection of the working document, the scheme has made its position known about security and welfare of the corps members and I want to inform you that the status quo is maintained to the letter.”

On the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State, the REC said that her office would as matter of policy collaborate with relevant departments in NYSC to have mutual agreement and thrash out grey areas so as to maintain sound relationship between the two federal government agencies.

Speaking earlier on his mission, the NYSC Ondo State coordinator, Pepple said that he was on the visit rub minds with the management so that there would not be any lacuna of any sort.

While thanking his host for accepting to see him despite her crowded schedules reiterated the non-negotiable stand of the NYSC management on corps members’ security and welfare during training and election duties.

“The Honourable Resident Electoral Commissioner, I am happy for the express audience you have granted me today but the main reason is to leverage the already established relationship we have and to reiterate the stand of NYSC about the security and welfare of both the corps members and NYSC staff that would be engaged as ad-hoc staff of the Commission.”

The NYSC boss in Ondo State, while pledging to do the best to sustain the synergy between the two agencies thanked the commission for the sustained interest in the members of the service corps.

“We are birthed by the same government and it is imperative to say that we shall be relating from time to time so that the mandate of the commission will be successfully accomplished while from our end, we shall continue to do our best in the interest of national development.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Kwara, Malam Attahiru Madami, has said that the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, is not for voting, but to verify and authenticate the owner of voters card.

Madami made the clarification during a stakeholders meeting at the commission’s office in Ilorin on Thursday.

He said that the meeting was very important especially for the political parties to embark on voter education.

The official explained that there won’t be over voting with the use of BVAS for accreditation.

He warned that if the presiding officer of any polling unit was mischievous and allowed people to vote without verification by BVAS, such person would be arrested and prosecuted.

“Assuming the total number of people registered through accreditation is 300 and the ballot paper counted is 301, the result of that polling unit will be cancelled.

“It means that all the political parties in the affected polling unit will get zero,” the REC said.

“If your finger was put on the BVAS and your finger print matches, you are going to vote, but if your finger print doesn’t match but face matches you are going to vote.

“However, if your face and finger print was put three times and both do match, it means you cannot vote,” Madami explained.

He therefore advised the representatives of political parties to draw the ears of their political agents to be vigilant during election.

Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr. Mutiu Agboke, has been commended by the state chapter of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, over what it described as successful conduct of the general elections.

The association said it deemed it fit to honour the electoral umpire and particularly, the REC for meeting the demands placed before him during an earlier visit about three weeks before the election.

The chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Mrs. Jadesola Ajibola, who led other executive members to the commission’s Agodi office, said the award was to commend and encourage the commission on its efforts at achieving a successful election.

She said, “We were here about three weeks before the election and made some demands. We demanded that the election should be free, fair, credible and transparent, we got that.

“We demanded that all the parties should be given a level playing ground, we got that. We also demanded that all the stakeholders be carried along in all the commission’s efforts at conducting the election. We got that too.

“The REC, with the support of the management team were never tired of giving information anytime we knocked on their doors. We followed their actions and monitored all their efforts from the pre-election to the announcement of the result and we saw the transparency and that the people’s votes counted and that is why we agreed that we should commend the Commission and the REC in Oyo State.”

The REC while receiving the letter of commendation and a plaque, said he was shocked that all the efforts of the commission were being appreciated and recognised by journalists.

Agboke noted that although he didn’t do anything spectacular other than aligning with the electoral guidelines as stipulated by the national headquarters of the commission, he said he felt proud that members of the management team in the state also shared his passion of doing what was expected of them.

He said, “We have a guideline and there are provisions for everything and anything we have to do as a commission. All we did was just to follow them to the letter. I was shocked at the kind of response we have been getting since after the election because we have been largely commended and we are proud of it.

“Although the result is there for all to see, I can assure you that no member of INEC in this state can ever be found culpable of any electoral crime or did anything untowards to achieve the result.

“We know people were watching and listening to us before the election, but we never knew people didn’t believe us when we promised that their votes would count, until they saw the outcome and said they just believed.

“Our people need to know that, with the new INEC, the era of election rigging and manipulations are over and even the political parties and other stakeholders must also know that and begin to live by it.”
