Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, on Sunday walked out of a meeting with the federal government.

They accused the federal government of being insincere in the discussions with them and also putting the lives of the leaders of the workers’ union at risk.

The bone of contention is the increase in the prices of petrol and electricity across the nation.

The president of the TUC, Mr. Quadri Olaleye, during the meeting held at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, complained about the insincerity of the government before the representatives of the labour unions staged a walk out.

Said Olaleye: “Government is showing a high level of insincerity in discussions with us and is also putting us at risk with the people we are leading, with the masses.

“We find it difficult to move freely but the people in government are moving freely.”

While Deputy President, Najeem Yasin, led the NLC delegation, TUC’s delegation was led by Olaleye.

For the federal government were the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo; Minister of State for Petroleum, Timiprye Sylva; Minister of State for Power, Goddy Agba; and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has dissociated itself from the mass rally tagged “#Revolution Now!” scheduled for Monday.

It said it was not in league with any group whatsoever for any mass action in any part of the country.

TUC, in a statement issued by its president, Comrade Quadri A. Olaleye, said it had no issues in contention with any public authority that had not been subjected to social dialogue that would require extra ordinary means or action to resolve.

The Congress further stated that if such issues arose, the Labour Centre would go through its internal mechanism to procure authority for such an action, bearing in mind that its organs must be properly briefed and thorough debates would be undertaken before the organs could give approval.

It said in the current situation, no issue had arisen, no organ had been summoned, and no debate had been undertaken.

“Therefore, no such decisions has been taken,” it said.

TUC however held that the opinion that any group or groups reserved the right to express themselves in any manner they deemed fit taking into cognisance the laws of the land.

“TUC remains committed to the corporate existence of this country in which all manner of people enjoy the right of citizenship,” the group said.
