The Police Service Commission, PSC, has approved the promotion of 952 Assistant Superintendents of Police, ASPs, to the rank of Deputy Superintendents of Police, DSP.

The commission, however, declined the promotion of 176 officers found to have retired and three others suspected to be deceased.

Mr Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the decisions were among the highlights of the first plenary meeting of the 6th board of the commission.

READ ALSO: Olubadan: Ladoja gets Makinde’s approval, installation date known

Ani added that the commission’s approval had been forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police, I-G, for implementation.

The PSC chairman, Mr Hashimu Argungu, congratulated the newly promoted officers.

Argungu, however, warned that thenceforth Police personnel must imbibe the spirit of nationalism and respect both the nation’s laws and police service regulations.

The PSC chairman stressed that the commission would no longer tolerate diversionary or unauthorised actions by serving officers, particularly when established channels existed to air grievances.

Argungu reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to protecting officers’ career progression, ensuring it was neither hindered nor undermined.

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Mr Hashimu Argungu as the chairman of Police Service Commission, PSC.

Also confirmed as secretary and member were Chief Onyemuche Nnamani and Mr Frederick Lakanu.

The confirmation followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Police Affairs at the Committee of the Whole on Thursday.

Presenting the report, the chairman of the committee, Sen. Abdulhamid Ahmed (APC-Jigawa), said the professional track records of the nominees validated the fact that they were persons of proven integrity and ability.

According to him, there was no petition or any adverse security report against their nomination.

He said their qualifications, track record of excellence, professional services and cognate experience confirmed and affirmed their suitability and competence to be appointed for the positions.

He therefore urged the Senate to confirm the nominees.

Contributing, Senator Seriake Dickson(PDP-Bayelsa) said the committee performed its duties as was requested by the Senate.

READ ALSO: BREAKING: Supreme Court grants local govts financial autonomy

He said he had a personal knowledge of the nominees in the course of his service at various levels, while urging the Senate to confirm the nominees.

Senator Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe) commended the committee for conducting a through screening on the nominees.

He said the nominees were all qualified for the positions expressing hope that they would perform creditably.

He stated there was a disagreement between the office of Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission on who should recruit new police officers, saying that the matter ended at the Supreme Court.

This, Lawan said, was a bad experience.

He stated that the Senate must insist that whatever issues between the two organisations should be resolved.

He expressed belief that the nominees were well qualified to do the job, while urging the committee to closely monitor activities in the two organisations.

President of Senate Godswill Akpabio said Committee on Police Affairs should ensure oversight functions to avoid the mistakes of the past, particularly the idea of office of the Inspector-General of Police struggling with the Police Service Commission on issues of recruitment.

“In the last two years, we probably would have had additional 20,000 Nigerians into the Nigerian Police Force, but unfortunately as a result of personality clashes, the issues went as far as the Supreme Court.

“Whether withdrawn or not withdrawn, this Police Service Commission we have just cleared today. And so, Office of the Inspector-General of Police should be cautioned to take the interest of Nigerians into consideration and security of this nation uppermost and not their personal interest.

“They should work harmoniously toward the realisation of Mr President’s vision that Nigerians should be allowed to sleep with their eyes closed.”

The Police Service Commission, PSC, has approved the appointment of three Assistant Inspectors General of Police, AIGs, to the rank of Deputy Inspectors General of Police, DIGs.

A statement by Mr Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC, on Sunday in Abuja, said the commission had suspended the promotion of 19 senior officers.

He said the senior officers affected by the suspension for failing to appear for interview were eight Commissioners of Police, CPs, and 11 Assistant Commissioners of Police, ACPs.

Ani said the new DIGs were appointed to fill the vacant positions created by the retirements of three DIGs representing the North Central, North East and North West geopolitical zones.

He said the appointments were to ensure that the defined succession policy in the Nigeria Police was sustained.

The PSC spokesman said the newly appointed DIGs were Mr Hafiz Inuwa, the Force Secretary, to replace Mr Mustapha Dan- Daura, after retirement for the North West.

He said Mr Aji Janga would replace Mr Zanna Ibrahim for the North East, while Mr Adeleke Bode would replace Mr Sanusi Lemu for the North Central.

Ani said the new appointments were part of the decisions of the reconvened 18th Plenary Meeting of the commission chaired by its Acting Chairman, Justice Clara Ogunbiyi.

He said the commission also suspended the promotion of eight CPs to the rank of AIGs and 11 Deputy Commissioners of Police, DCPs, to the next rank of CPs.

He said the suspension followed failure of the officers to appear before the commission for the mandatory promotion interview.

According to him, the commission had earlier sent invitations to the officers to appear before it for the usual interaction to ascertain their suitability and capability for the new offices.

He said the commission had expressed surprise over the failure of the officers to honour the invitation.

Ani said the commission had approved the promotion of 10 ACPs to the next rank of DCPs, 17 Chief Superintendents of Police, CSPs, to ACPs and 301 Superintendents of Police, SPs, to Chief Superintendents, CSP.

He said the 47 skipped Deputy Superintendents of Police, DSP, from previous recommendations to the commission were also promoted to SPs.

The PSC spokesman said 665 Assistant Superintendents of Police, ASP, were promoted to DSP.

He said the recommendations for Nwamanna Nelson, an ACP, Iliyas Casmir, SP and Alheri Mamman, SP were also endorsed.

Ani said the officers were promoted to their next ranks after they were absolved of any Pending Disciplinary Matter, PDM.

He said Ogunbiyi charged the newly promoted officers to give their best to the service of the nation especially, ahead of the general elections.

The Police Service Commission, PSC, has set up a panel to study the documents available to it on the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Mr Abba Kyari.

The Head of Press and Public Relations of PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, announced this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Kyari was on July 31 suspended by the PSC following the recommendation by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Usman Baba.

The recommendation followed a bribery allegation brought against him by the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI.

The FBI had alleged that the suspended DCP was paid a bribe by a serial internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, to arrest one of his friends in a $1.1 million deal.

Ani said that the PSC panel would examine the facts of the allegations as contained in the FBI indictment, as well as the extant rules to keep abreast with the matter, pending the submission of the Police Investigative Panel report.

The panel, headed by Mr Tijani Mohammed, the Director of Discipline in the commission, would gather and document relevant information on Kyari in view of it being a disciplinary matter, Ani said.

He added that the idea was to analyse the information gathered and make appropriate recommendation(s) to the commission.

The PSC spokesman said the report of the panel would assist the commission to take an informed decision after the submission of the Police Investigative Panel report.

He said the panel had already been inaugurated by the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Commission, Alhaji Abubakar Ismaila.
