Troops of Operation Ensuring Peace, OPEP, have arrested five suspected illegal arms fabricators and recovered a cache of weapons during a raid operation in Jos South local government area of Plateau.

This is contained in an operational report by the Nigerian Army, made available in Abuja on Friday.

The report said that the operation was conducted on Thursday at about 15;00 hours at Vom community, following credible human intelligence on the activities of illegal arms manufacturers in the area.

It said troops of OPEP carried out a well-coordinated raid on two identified fabrication sites, where the suspects were caught in the act of manufacturing illegal weapons.

“During the operation, five suspects were arrested, while troops recovered nine fabricated AK-47 rifles, one locally fabricated pistol, seven skeleton AK-47 rifles, four empty magazines, and 10 rifle butt stocks.

“Other items recovered include 36 empty shells of 7.62mm special ammunition, four revolver components, 14 recoiling springs, six hand drilling machines, nine filing machines, four welding machines, and other assorted tools used for arms fabrication,” it said.

The report added that the suspects and recovered exhibits were currently in custody for further investigation.

It also said that follow-up covert operations were ongoing to consolidate gains and mop up remaining illegal arms networks within the Plateau operational environment.

According to the report, the operation forms part of sustained efforts by OPEP to curb illicit arms proliferation and strengthen peace and security in the North-Central region.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has convened a security council meeting as part of efforts to strengthen peaceful co-existence and security across the state.

The closed-door meeting, which held on Wednesday in Jos, had all heads of security agencies in the state and members of the State’s Executive Council in attendance.

The meeting focused on reviewing Plateau’s security situation in the last few days and developing proactive strategies to prevent further breaches to sustainable peace in the state.

Speaking after the meeting, the Commissioner of Police, CP, in the state, Bassey Ewah, said the session provided an opportunity to assess recent developments and outline a clear direction for coordinated security operations.

“His Excellency summoned this meeting to review the past week and enable us plan effectively for the days ahead.

“The curfew has now been adjusted to run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and we have been directed to ensure strict compliance.

“All other existing restrictions remain in force, including the ban on commercial motorcycle operations and the regulation of tricycle movements. Security agencies are fully committed to maintaining law and order.

“Anyone arrested for violating the curfew will be prosecuted. Laws are meant to be obeyed; if you break them, you must face the consequences,” he said.

While addressing concerns circulating on social media over alleged protests by some residents in the state, Ewah dismissed the claims, emphasising that the situation was calm.

“All decisions are aimed at ensuring peace, so, to the best of my knowledge, there have been no protests and no breakdown of law and order,” he added.

The CP urged residents to support ongoing security efforts by complying with directives, stressing that unity among security agencies remained strong.

“We operate as one team, and I assure citizens that we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure peace,” he said.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Hamisu Anani, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, in Plateau, described the meeting as critical in addressing recurring security challenges, particularly within the Jos metropolis.

Anani disclosed that local government councils were adopting tailored strategies to respond to security threats based on their unique circumstances.

“Each local government will develop strategies based on its peculiarities, we are working closely with security chiefs, reviewing reports from the field, and strengthening collaboration to effectively tackle insecurity across the state,” the ALGON scribe said.

The Plateau government has further relaxed the curfew it earlier imposed on Jos North local government area of the state.

Mrs Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Jos.

The state government had imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North local government area, following the attack by gunmen on Angwan Rukuba community of the area.

The government later relaxed the curfew and movements to between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Ramnap said that following the improved security situation in the locality, the state government had further reviewed the curfew.

“‎Following the relative peace being experienced, the government in consultation with security agencies, has further relaxed the curfew hours earlier imposed on Jos North LGA.

‎‎”Effective Wednesday, April 8, curfew will be relaxed in Jos North and movement will be between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00p.m. daily.

“Citizens are therefore urged to be mindful of this development and carry out their lawful duties within the relaxed hours not affected by curfew,” she said.

She advised residents to remain indoors during the curfew hours, cooperate with security agencies and provide useful information that would support efforts towards maintaining law and order in the state.

She noted that Governor Caleb Mutfwang had directed the security agencies to ensure residents strictly compliant with the curfew time.

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, on Saturday paid a heartfelt and solemn visit to victims of the recent dastardly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North local government area of Plateau State, who are currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH.

Yilwatda was accompanied on the visit by his wife, Dr. Martina Yilwatda, in a demonstration of compassion, solidarity, and shared commitment to the pain and plight of the victims, their families, and the people of Plateau State at the difficult moment.

The visit was not only a gesture of sympathy but also a clear reaffirmation of the resolve of the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the lives and properties of Nigerians are protected and that the repeated shedding of innocent blood in Plateau State must come to an end.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Yilwatda described the attack as barbaric, painful, unacceptable, and a direct assault on “our common humanity”, stressing that the time had come for all stakeholders to move beyond routine condemnation and work deliberately and collectively to prevent any recurrence of such senseless violence.

In a statement signed by Mr Abimbola Tooki, Special Adviser to the National Chairman of APC, Media and Communications Strategy, Yilwatda said the pain of the victims and their families was a burden that must be shared by all men and women of conscience, adding that no society could make meaningful progress where innocent citizens continued to live in fear and uncertainty.

He stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained deeply committed to restoring peace, strengthening security operations, and ensuring that all parts of the country, including Plateau State, enjoyed the safety and stability necessary for development and peaceful coexistence.

Yilwatda assured the victims and their families that the federal government was not leaving any stone unturned in its determination to ensure that every Nigerian life was valued, protected, and defended against criminality, violence, and terror.

He further emphasised that the tragedy in Angwan Rukuba must serve as a wake-up call to all leaders, communities, security institutions, and political actors to rise above division and work in unity to confront the forces of violence threatening the peace of Plateau and other parts of the country.

As a practical expression of support and compassion, the APC national chairman announced a donation of N15 million to support the victims of the Angwan Rukuba attack as well as other vulnerable patients receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

The donation, he noted, was intended to ease the immediate burden of medical care and provide some measure of relief to those going through physical pain, emotional trauma, and financial hardship as a result of the unfortunate incident.

Yilwatda also used the occasion to commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack, praying for the peaceful repose of the departed and asking God to grant their loved ones the strength and courage to bear the painful and irreparable loss.

He expressed deep appreciation to the management and medical personnel of the Jos University Teaching Hospital for their prompt response, professionalism, and commitment in attending to the victims and saving lives under difficult circumstances.

The national chairman also paid a condolence visit to the Paramount Ruler of Jos North local government area, the Ujah Anaguta, over the unfortunate attack on residents of Anguwan Rukuba, a community within his domain.

The APC national chairman reiterated that the tragedy in Plateau must not be normalised, politicized, or reduced to another passing news cycle.

Rather, he said, it must provoke renewed urgency, coordinated action, stronger intelligence gathering, deeper community engagement, and sustained security intervention to ensure that communities across the state are protected from further attacks.

He called on political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to close ranks and reject every form of hatred, division, provocation, and violence capable of threatening the peace and unity of Plateau State.

Yilwatda maintained that Plateau, with its rich diversity, history, and strategic importance, must not be allowed to descend into repeated circles of bloodshed, grief, and instability.

He affirmed that the APC, the federal government, and all responsible stakeholders were united in the resolve to ensure that there was no repeat of such horrific incidents and that every necessary step would continue to be taken to restore confidence, strengthen peace, and guarantee security for all residents of the state.

The visit by Yilwatda and Dr. Martina Yilwatda stands as a powerful reminder that in moments of pain and tragedy, leadership must not only speak, it must show up, stand with the people, and act with compassion and responsibility.

As Plateau mourns, the message from the APC national chairman is clear and unequivocal: the killing of innocent citizens must stop, the perpetrators must not prevail, and peace must return fully and permanently to Plateau State.

Troops of Joint Task Force-Operation Enduring Peace, JTF-OPEP, have neutralised three suspected terrorists at Karem community of Wase local government area of Plateau State.

The Media Officer of the operation, Capt. Polycarp Oteh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Jos.

Oteh said that the feat followed an intelligence report on the movement of some suspected terrorists along the area.

“The momentum of this success in Karem community in Wase LGA where high-alert troops successfully disrupted a large-scale movement of terrorists travelling via motorcycles.

“Upon being engaged by troops, the insurgents fled under the pressure of sustained combat.

“In the engagement, three terrorists were successfully neutralised.

“This surge in operational efficiency follows the strategic deployment of a battalion plus specialised counter-terrorism troops, an initiative ordered by the Chief of Army Staff,” he said.

Oteh also disclosed that troops on Thursday arrested two suspects in connection with the security breach at Dutse Uku community of Jos North local government area.

He said that suspects, dressed in uniforms, were impersonating security personnel.

“These impostors, dressed in tactical black uniforms, were caught actively participating in the arson of residential properties and the orchestration of violence within the community.

“Those arrested are currently in custody while two persons who sustained gunshot wounds are currently in a medical facility and are in a stable condition.

“This pivotal arrest serves as a direct rebuttal to recent allegations suggesting military complicity in the Jos North unrest.

“It has effectively proven that the atrocities previously attributed to official personnel are being committed by criminal elements using deceptive attire to sow discord and defame the Armed Forces,” he said.

The crowded itinerary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday was responsible for the decision to address victims of the recent Plateau attacks at the airport in Jos, Plateau State.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, made this known in a press statement on Friday.

He said the schedule of the president included receiving the Chadian President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, and proceeding to Iperu, Ogun State.

The media aide said after Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s briefing, President Tinubu suspended the trip to Ogun.

“Overnight, the Presidential Villa made arrangements for the visit to Jos, with presidential assets quickly deployed. However, the president could not postpone the scheduled visit by the Chadian leader.

“The President of Chad was at the Presidential Villa for a very important bilateral meeting focused on strengthening security collaboration between the two countries. The meeting ran longer than expected, affecting President Tinubu’s scheduled departure for Jos,” Onanuga said.

He added that “Upon arrival in Jos, the visit encountered some logistical challenges. While the road distance from the airport to Jos township is approximately 40 minutes, the runway does not support night flights due to the absence of navigational aids. The constraints made it unfeasible to drive into town, meet victims for on-the-spot assessment and return to the airport before dusk.

“Consequently, state and federal officials decided to bring representatives of the affected community to a hall adjoining the airport so the president could meet with them promptly while adhering to flight restrictions.”

Onanuga said among the people in the hall were the Minister of Defence; the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police, who had visited Rukuba, the epicentre of the conflict.

He said President Tinubu deployed the high-level team to Rukuba, including the Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement, to undertake critical groundwork on security and community engagement, with a view to stabilising the area before his arrival.

“Beyond expressing his condolences to the victims, President Tinubu’s objective was to engage with critical stakeholders in Plateau State on ending the recurring, decades-old conflict that has resulted in needless loss of lives and property.

“President Tinubu’s visit to Jos was not merely symbolic. It was a strategic, high-level engagement aimed at bringing all stakeholders together to address the root causes of conflict and insecurity in the state,” Onanuga explained.

He said the president interacted with the victims, consoled them, and listened to them.

He added that Tinubu also listened to local leaders and assured them that the federal government would deliver justice and end the cycle of violence.

He was reported to have also promised the deployment of 5000 AI-enabled cameras to monitor the city and enhance the identification and arrest of troublemakers.

“Furthermore, the president invited the community leaders to Abuja for further talks on finding a lasting solution to the recurring violence in the state.

“The meeting, televised live, was solemn and reassuring, boosting residents’ confidence. President Tinubu achieved the purpose of his visit, despite the naysayers’ attempts to ridicule it. He dropped an unmistakable message: sustainable peace must be built with the people, not imposed on them,” he said.

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his visit to commiserate with the government and people of the Plateau State following the recent killings of innocent residents of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North local government area.

Yilwatda described the killings as horrific and senseless, declaring that Plateau must never bleed again.

In a statement by his media aide, Mr. Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda said the president’s visit was a profound demonstration of responsive leadership, empathy, and national solidarity at a time when the people of Plateau were grieving over the painful and unjust loss of their loved ones to yet another round of barbaric violence.

President Tinubu was received in Plateau State by the national chairman, the governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, former governors, political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, elders, women and youth representatives, as well as stakeholders from across all segments of society in the state.

Speaking during the visit, the APC national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, condemned the killings in the strongest and most unequivocal terms, describing the attack as inhuman, cowardly, reprehensible, and a direct assault on the peace, unity, and soul of Plateau State.

According to Yilwatda, the continued shedding of innocent blood in Plateau is not only unacceptable but a national tragedy that must no longer be treated with routine outrage and temporary responses.

The APC national chairman stressed that the time had come for deliberate, coordinated, and result-oriented efforts by all relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that such dastardly and unconscionable acts never happen again in Plateau State or anywhere else in the country.

Yilwatda called on leaders of communities across Plateau State to become more vigilant, responsive, and proactive in identifying and reporting suspicious movements and security threats within their domains.

He noted that the recurring pattern of killings strongly suggested that many of those behind the heinous acts were not ghosts or invisible invaders, but criminal elements and miscreants living within or around the communities, exploiting local vulnerabilities to unleash mayhem on innocent citizens.

He declared that the evil perpetrators must no longer be shielded by silence, fear, complicity, or communal indifference.

He insisted that they must be identified, exposed, apprehended, and made to face the full wrath of the law.

The APC national chairman further charged security agencies to urgently rethink and upgrade their security architecture and operational methods in tackling the persistent violence in Plateau State.

He emphasized that the security agencies could not continue to deploy outdated tactics against increasingly adaptive and ruthless criminal networks and expect a different outcome.

Yilwatda therefore advocated the deployment of modern surveillance and intelligence-driven technology, including Artificial Intelligence-powered cameras, drones, advanced tracking systems, and real-time intelligence gathering mechanisms, to detect, monitor, and neutralize criminal elements before they strike.

He said the era demanded smarter, faster, and more sophisticated security responses, adding that the protection of lives and property must now be driven not only by manpower, but also by technology, intelligence, precision, and accountability.

He stated clearly that Plateau could not continue to mourn in cycles, while the enemies of peace roam freely and repeatedly unleash terror on innocent citizens.

Yilwatda also drew attention to the grave economic implications of insecurity in Plateau State, lamenting that the state, which was richly blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes, vibrant tourism assets, and enormous economic potential, had continued to suffer avoidable setbacks due to persistent violence.

He noted that Plateau had long been celebrated as a peaceful and attractive destination with some of Nigeria’s most vibrant tourism centres, cultural attractions, and agricultural potential, but all of those opportunities remained vulnerable and stunted in the face of recurring attacks.

According to him, no economy can thrive where fear reigns, no investment can flourish where blood is spilled, and no society can truly prosper where innocent citizens live under the shadow of insecurity.

He warned that without adequate protection of lives and communities, the social and economic future of the state could be severely paralysed, thereby depriving the people, especially young people, of prosperity, stability, and hope.

Yilwatda therefore called for a whole-of-society approach to ending the violence in Plateau, urging traditional institutions, religious leaders, political actors, youth groups, women’s groups, security operatives, and community stakeholders to work together in honesty and patriotism to restore peace and stability.

During the visit, other leaders from across Plateau State also spoke passionately on the disturbing security situation in the state and the urgent need for decisive and sustained intervention to halt the bloodshed and restore confidence among the people.

As part of the visit, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former leaders, and other key stakeholders, also paid a solemn and deeply emotional visit to the families of the affected victims of the Angwan Rukuba attack.

The visit to the bereaved families was a moving moment of compassion and national mourning, as the president shared in their pain and offered words of comfort, reassurance, and solidarity in the face of unimaginable loss.

The APC noted that that visit by President Tinubu was not merely symbolic; it was a powerful signal that the federal government stood firmly with the people of Plateau State and remained committed to confronting the menace of violent attacks with renewed urgency and seriousness.

It is expected that the president will, in the days ahead, continue broader engagements with leaders of Plateau communities and critical stakeholders toward evolving practical, inclusive, and lasting solutions that will guarantee sustainable peace, justice, reconciliation, and security for the people of the state.

The APC reiterated that the lives of Plateau citizens were sacred and non-negotiable, and that those who delighted in sowing death, fear, and division among peaceful communities must be hunted down and brought to justice without delay.

The party chairman declared: “The blood of innocent men, women, and children cries out for justice, and the nation must answer with resolve.

“Plateau deserves peace.

“Plateau deserves healing.

“Plateau deserves protection.

“And above all, Plateau must never be allowed to bleed like this again.”

President Bola Tinubu has assured the people of Plateau State that the federal government will deploy an artificial intelligence-enabled network of over 5,000 digital cameras to help law enforcement agencies combat insecurity in the state.

President Tinubu gave the promise in his address during his visit to Jos on Thursday.

He commiserated with the government and people of the state on the March 29 gun attacks that claimed the lives of innocent citizens in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos North local government area.

“I promise you that this experience will not repeat itself,” he said.

President Tinubu directed the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to “unearth and find the killers” of innocent Nigerians.

He announced that the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijjani, would oversee the immediate installation of the security cameras in close coordination with the Plateau State government and security agencies.

The installation will start in Jos and expand across Plateau State, building on systems already successfully deployed in Lagos and Enugu states.

Lamenting the pain caused by the latest violence, President Tinubu expressed dismay at seeing videos from Jos depicting violence.

“It is only God that can give you joy and comfort,” President Tinubu told families affected by the attacks at the meeting held at the arrival lounge at Yakubu Gowon Airport.

“No amount of money can recompense for lost souls,” he added.

President Tinubu pledged that the government would do everything possible to ensure that justice was served and provided comfort for the bereaved families.

He directed the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro, to compile comprehensive data on those affected by the violence to ensure that government assistance was equitable to all.

Addressing leaders and stakeholders, President Tinubu emphasised the need for proactive measures to prevent future attacks.

”Why is the past not a source of lessons to us? I have listened to Jonah Jang, Wase, Lalong, Nentawe and Governor Mutfwang.

“Governor, you and I were elected on a promise of peace and security, not to comfort and create widows and widowers. We were elected to bring prosperity and inclusiveness as a government, to share hope and aspiration with everyone, and to lead our youth.

”I assure our youths who are represented here that I do not want to be here consoling and commiserating — I want to be here to establish peace,” he said.

The governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, said the state had enjoyed relative peace before the unfortunate incident of March 29, describing it as a temporary setback.

He commended security agencies for their ongoing efforts and expressed confidence that their interventions would continue to strengthen security.

“We will win this war against insecurity,” the governor said, adding that the current administration inherited the challenges and was taking all measures within its powers to address them.

Governor Mutfwang also expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to complement the state’s security efforts.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, thanked President Tinubu for standing with the people of Plateau, noting that the crisis had lingered for a long time.

He expressed hope that the president’s visit would strengthen security agencies, stem the tide of attacks, and provide comfort to bereaved families.

“We will stay back and work with our people to find a lasting solution to the problem,” he said.

A former governor of the state, Jonah David Jang, echoed the request by Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, and the state governor for a special meeting in Abuja to find lasting solutions to the crisis in Plateau.

“I went through it, Joshua Dariye went through it, Simon Lalong went through it. The fact that the violence is now leaving the villages and getting into the townships is a dimension that we do not want to see,” he said.

He alleged that some people were attempting to sabotage the forthcoming general elections and President Tinubu’s achievements for the nation.

“You are doing a fantastic job for the nation, and some people think they want to spoil it like this,” he said.

Senator Simon Lalong, a former governor and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, recalled that, as a former governor, he had witnessed the state go through a state of emergency.

“We thought that it was over, but it is rearing its ugly head again. Plateau is privileged. If you bring together Jonah Jang, Joshua Dariye, Simon Lalong, and Mutfwang with traditional rulers, you will find solutions to Plateau State’s problems.

“I say that because all of us went through it. The solution to this problem lies with the people of Plateau. If we are ready, we will proffer a solution to you, Mr President. That is why we suggest a closed-door meeting in Abuja, where we can say the truth.

“It is not security agencies that will bring peace — Plateau people will bring peace,” he said.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, observed that much work remained to be done to ensure lasting peace in Plateau, noting that many challenges stemmed from sabotage.

He called for increased collaboration between the Air Force and ground troops, particularly as the next farming season approaches in the state.

“In Wase and Kanke alone, last week we lost over 14 people, including a captain of the Nigerian Army,” he said.

Plateau State government has relaxed the 48-hour curfew earlier imposed on Jos North local government area.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications of the state, Mrs Joyce Ramnap, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Jos.

The government had earlier imposed the curfew, following an attack on Angwan-Rukuba, a community in Jos North local government area.

Gunmen had on Sunday night attacked the community, killed many persons, and left others injured.

Ramnap said the curfew had been relaxed with effect from April 1, adding that residents could go about their normal businesses between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

“Residents are hereby free to carry out their lawful activities, within the stipulated hours.

‎‎”Government urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding as security agencies continue to monitor the situation to ensure sustained peace and order,” Ramnap said.

‎The commissioner thanked members of the public for their cooperation and support during the trying time.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property in all parts of the state.
