The Department of State Services, DSS, has raised the alarm over alleged plan by some persons to instigate religious violence across the country.

The persons are said to be working in collaboration with some external forces.

Some of the states targeted are Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Rivers, Oyo and states in the South East.

In a statement on Monday titled ‘Plots to incite religious violence in Nigeria’ by its Head, Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, the DSS, called on law-abiding citizens (and residents) to report suspected breaches of peace around them to the nearest security agencies.

The statement reads: “The Department of State Services wishes to alert the public about plans by some elements working with external forces to incite religious violence across the country. Targeted States include Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Rivers, Oyo, Lagos and those in the South East.

“Part of the plans is to cause inter-religious conflicts as well as use their foot soldiers to attack some worship centres, religious leaders, personalities, key and vulnerable points.

“Consequently, Nigerians are advised to be wary of these antics and shun all divisive tendencies aimed at inciting or setting them against one another.

“While the Service pledges to collaborate with sister agencies to ensure that public order is maintained, those hatching these plots are warned to desist from such in the interest of peace, security and development of the country.

“However, law-abiding citizens (and residents) are encouraged to report suspected breaches of peace around them to the nearest security agencies.”

Oke succeeds the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, VC, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun (SAN), whose five-year tenure ended on January 11, 2021.

Mr Ademola Adekoya, the institution’s Head of Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, said this on Monday in Lagos.

Adekoya said that the members of the Senate of the institution approved the appointment of Oke as the Acting Vice-Chancellor after their voting process.

He said, “Oke had over 61 votes while Prof. Elias Wahab, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) had 51 votes.

“His appointment is for 45 days according to a statement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu released on January 8.

“Prior to his appointment, Oke was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of LASU, a Professor of Plant Pathology and the former Dean, Faculty of Science,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the former V-C, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun (SAN), urged the entire LASU community to support the administration of whosoever would be his successor in office.

In a statement he issued, he also advised them to ensure that the rule of law and justice continued to thrive in the institution.
