The Executive Secretary gave the assurance when she hosted the NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mr. Sam Amaramiro Pepple, at the commission’s administrative headquarters at Oba-Ile, in the outskirts of the state capital.

The administrative head of the commission said that OSOPADEC was entrusted with the responsibility of socio-economic welfare of the mandate areas and intervened in the development of oil producing and impacted communities in Ondo State.

According to her, the commission continually sought to improve access and quality of education of mandate areas by executing programmes to further strengthen and increase the teaching workforce.

She said that corps members would widen their horizon and expand their capacity while serving in the mandate areas, which, according to her, would enhance the educational responsiveness of students in the affected communities.

The OSOPADEC boss promised that the commission would utilise the services of corps members maximally and equally cater to their needs as a means to motivate them to increase their productivity.

Speaking earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Sam Amaramiro Pepple, intimated the Executive Secretary that the commission previously engaged the services of corps members in schools within the mandate areas but had stopped for some time now.

The State Coordinator, while promising to put the services of corps members at the disposal of the commission for the educational advancement of the mandate areas, asserted that NYSC would create a strong synergy with the commission to improve the quality of life of rural dwellers.

The NYSC helmsman reiterated the commitment of the scheme to assist the commission in achieving its core mandate and explained that OSOPADEC should equally fulfill its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to enhance the operations of the scheme in the Sunshine State.

He said that both reputable organisations had things to benefit from each other and called for more robust and deepening relationships.

The lawmaker raised the alarm on Wednesday during the plenary of the Senate.

Coming under Order 42 and 52 of the Senate Rules, the lawmaker in a motion considered on the floor, informed his colleagues that Ayetoro which was known as Ayetoro floating city in the 1970s suffered a severe ocean current disaster which depleted the community, destroyed 308 houses and rendered many homeless.

According to the Senator, “Ayetoro which is part of the Niger Delta region is yet to receive any support from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC); and the Ondo State Oil Producing and Development Corporation (OSOPADEC) which oversees the oil producing part of Ondo State.

“Regrets also that crude oil exploration companies which operate around the region with its offices at Ilaje Local Government has not fared better.

“Concerned that Ayetoro floating city’s major occupation is fishing, hence most of the residents have suffered losses of their fishing tools and this has rendered most of them helpless and jobless,” the lawmaker added.

Accordingly, the Senate urged the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Ondo State Government to respond and assist victims in the community as well as develop a master plan that includes building of ocean barriers to control flooding and ocean surge in the region.

The upper chamber, while urging the Nigerian Maritime, Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to visit Ayetoro to ascertain the level of destruction in the community with a view to proffer solution to prevent future occurrence, called on oil producing companies to assist the community in rebuilding some of the infrastructure destroyed by the surge.
