Hosts Morocco take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat today from 8 p.m. in one of the highly anticipated semi-finals of the AFCON.

Ndidi has been ruled out after accumulating two yellow cards, picked up in Nigeria’s Round of 16 victory over Mozambique and the quarter-final win against Algeria.

Osimhen, Nigeria’s Vice-Captain, previously led the team in their final group match against Uganda and is experienced in handling leadership responsibilities.

Nigeria reached the semi-final with confidence following a 2-0 victory over Algeria, a match in which Osimhen scored and provided an assist.

South Africa forward Zakhele Lepasa had tipped Nigeria as favourites, saying none of the remaining teams could contain Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Lepasa said Nigeria was under pressure after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and were eager to prove they remained Africa’s best.

He described Nigeria as the tournament’s strongest side, stating their fourteen goals and attacking depth led by Osimhen and Lookman.

Nigeria’s impressive run in Morocco had eased earlier criticism, with the Super Eagles emerging as the competition’s most prolific attacking team.

Lepasa acknowledged Morocco’s home advantage but questioned whether the hosts had been adequately tested in the tournament.

He said that Morocco’s reliance on Brahim Díaz, who has scored five of their nine goals, contrasts with Nigeria’s shared scoring threat.

According to Lepasa, Nigeria’s attacking balance gives the Super Eagles the edge, adding that he does not see Morocco stopping Osimhen and Lookman easily.

The much anticipated quarter-final encounter between the Super Eagles and the Desert Foxes was played at the Stade de Marrakech with over 84,000 spectators in attendance.

The Super Eagles faced stern resistance before the break, with Algeria compact in midfield, limiting chances in spite of the  pressure from Osimhen, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman.

Nigeria broke through after halftime when Osimhen powered home Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross in the 47th minute, his fourth goal of the tournament.

Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, releasing Akor Adams, who rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane and finished calmly to double Nigeria’s lead.

Algeria pushed forward in response but lacked penetration, as Nigeria’s disciplined defence protected goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali with authority.

The victory sends Nigeria into their 16th AFCON semi-final, where the Super Eagles will meet hosts Morocco in Rabat.

Both are former African Footballers of the Year. Both have scored three goals at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. Both have assisted each other in those goals.

Indeed, their partnership, past and present, has delivered significant success for the Super Eagles. Yet, personal ambition now appears to be threatening their collective glory.

There is no doubt that Victor Osimhen is a rare talent, just as Ademola Lookman is. However, when individual ambition begins to outweigh collective aspiration, friction becomes inevitable.

That reality played out on Monday during Nigeria’s match against Mozambique, when Osimhen openly reprimanded Lookman for what he perceived as selfish play.

While Osimhen’s reaction may have conveyed a message, it does not entirely absolve him of criticism. His frustration did not appear to stem from a concern for the team as a whole, but rather from a missed personal opportunity.

After reviewing the match footage again, it became clear that Lookman was central to much of Alex Iwobi’s distribution to the forwards, Osimhen and Akor Adams.

In doing so, Lookman created chances not only for his teammates but also for himself.

He had several opportunities to connect Adams, which he did not take, opting instead to attempt to score himself.

Adams, however, did not complain. Notably, Lookman successfully set up Osimhen twice, resulting in goals.

Had Osimhen reprimanded Lookman for failing to pass to Adams, the argument that he was fighting for the team would have held more weight.

After watching Osimhen celebrate his brace with Lookman, one would have expected similar empathy for Adams, who worked tirelessly but had no goal to show for his efforts until Osimhen was substituted and Lookman assisted him to score a beautiful goal.

Had Osimhen reprimanded Lookman for failing to pass to Adams, the argument that he was fighting for the team would have held more weight.

But his outburst came only after Lookman failed to provide him with a clear pass that could have completed a hat-trick.

When Osimhen roared at Lookman, demanding he “play for the team” moments after the Atalanta forward missed a golden opportunity, it became evident that the frustration was personal.

Osimhen is the team’s leading striker, and with that status comes responsibility. If the concern is truly about team success, then equal concern should be shown when other forwards struggle to score.

As for Lookman, he must be reminded that within the Super Eagles setup, he functions primarily as a midfielder. His role should prioritise chance creation over goal hunting, especially when a recognised striker is better positioned.

It is worth recalling that the Most Valuable Player of the last AFCON was not a forward but a defender, William Troost-Ekong, whose impact went beyond goals to include leadership, organisation, and composure.

I follow Osimhen at this AFCON because of his passion. But passion must not turn into anger. It is becoming increasingly evident that under Coach Eric Chelle, more players are showing commitment, even if they are not vocal about it.

God forbid that Prophet Ayodele’s prophecy concerning both Lookman and Osimhen comes to pass. Nigeria must not be denied the glory that lies ahead.

Our top striker, Victor Osimhen should and must not wait till the time his team mates, all of them, old and new, would rise in unanimity and tell the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that they have had enough of his irritations and irrational reactions on the pitch.

Osimhen should and must remember his days of selling satchet water on Lagos roads and his prayer point to his creator to crown his hustle with unimaginable breakthrough.

If he remembers this humble past, that past should be his guide on how to manage his success today. Fame and stardom are temporary. Fake! With due respect, where are the stars of yesteryears today? Except a few of them, how many still have public heads turning to their direction again upon a mention of their names? A word is enough for the wise who has listening ears.

After Galatazaray, there is life. There is brighter life. Who says he cannot make it back to Europe in a big club? But when on and off pitch statistics are collated and the figures act against you, you’re out.

It is not too late before you retrace your step and behave like a leader who must treat his team mates with honour to inspire them to work for you and boost your leadership credential.

In 1996, while understudying Mr Feyi Ogunduyile, my own big boss, at the NTA, Ibadan, Ogunduyile assigned me to interview late Rashidi Yekinni after a live session with him in the studio.

I asked the smiling Yekinni a question about his relationship with his team mates at the USA 94 World Cup. A naturally frank man told me lamentably that he suffered a gang up in the team, leading to his only goal against Bulgaria in our first group match which we won 3-0.

If a player is suspected to be a cancer in a team, mates, coaches and management would not want it to spread and do maximum destruction to the life of the team.

I like Osimhen’s seriousness, his energy, his hunger to win and his patriotism. TheTabloid.net has celebrated him in different issues since 2021. But I hate his unguarded, reckless reactions, especially that he put up last night.

If the result had turned out differently and Mozambique beaten us, he would have been held responsible, condemned and grossly insulted to run away from the team and create a room for other strikers waiting in the wing for opportunity to also play.

Nigeria’s frontline were in top form as they dismantled Mozambique to ease into the last eight at the end of a one-sided encounter.

The game played at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco on Monday saw Ademola Lookman open scoring in 20th minute.

This was when he steered a precise finish into the top corner after a composed square pass from industrious forward Akor Adams.

Victor Osimhen extended Nigeria’s control with two well-taken goals, struck either side of half-time in the 25th and 47th minute respectively.

The goals effectively ended Mozambique’s resistance and underlined the Super Eagles’ tournament ambitions.

Akor Adams capped an impressive display by smashing home his first goal of the tournament in the 75th minute.

His shot from close range was too hot for goalkeeper Ernan Siluane to handle, as Nigeria maintained relentless pressure throughout.

Nigeria will meet either Algeria or DR Congo in Saturday’s quarter-final, buoyed by confidence and momentum as they continue their pursuit of a fourth continental title.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, heading home Ademola Lookman’s cross after the Super Eagles squandered several early chances.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi doubled Nigeria’s lead five minutes into the second half, nodding in from Lookman’s inswinging corner to score his maiden international goal.

Lookman then capped a brilliant display with Nigeria’s third goal in the 67th minute, finishing calmly after an unselfish assist from Osimhen to put the Super Eagles firmly in control.

Tunisia pulled one back in the 74th minute through Montassar Talbi’s header, before Ali Abdi converted a late penalty to set up a tense finish.

The Super Eagles, however, held on for their second consecutive win of the tournament, confirming their place in the AFCON 2025 round of 16.

Osimhen’s goal was his 32nd in 46 appearances for Nigeria, leaving him five goals shy of the late Rashidi Yekini’s all-time national record.

Ndidi’s dominant midfield display and landmark goal further underlined Nigeria’s authority, as the Eagles celebrated another morale-boosting win in Morocco.

Nigeria now top the AFCON Group C table with six points after securing two wins from two games played so far.

Tunisia with three points are second on the table, while the Cranes of Uganda and Taifa Stars of Tanzania who played a 1-1 draw in the other Group C encounter are third and fourth on the table, with one point each.

In group D, Benin Republic defeated Botswana 1-0 to keep their hope of making it to the round of 16 alive, while Senegal drew 1-1 with DR Congo in a highly explosive encounter.

The Super Eagles meeting with Tunisia in the group stage of the 2025 AFCON makes it the seventh time they are meeting at the tournament.

Eagles defeated them three times, while Tunisia won once. Their other two encounters ended in penalty shootouts, with both sides winning one each.

The Super Eagles will take on Uganda in their last Group game on Tuesday by 4 p.m. in Fes, while Tunisia will return to Rabat to face Tanzania at the same time.

Semi Ajayi broke the deadlock after the Eagles dominance through a header from Alex Iwobi to open the scoring in the 35th minute, displacing the resilience Tanzanian goal keeper, Zuberi Musadi.

On resumption from the second half,  Victor Osimhen’s effort to make it two was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee, VAR.

Tanzanian’s determination paid off when Charles M’Mombwa’s finishing in the 50th minute brought Tanzania levelled with Nigeria.

Ademola Lookman, however, restored Nigeria’s lead again in the 52nd minute with a shot from outside the box.

The Super Eagles backline marshalled by Calvin Bassey, Wilfred Ndidi kept at bay, the Tanzanians who tried several times to break the Eagles defence.

Speaking after the match, the head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, admitted he made some poor decisions, in spite of a 2–1 victory over the Taifa Stars.

“I told the journalists that I have my vision and I’m the coach.

“I made a lot of choices; some were good, some were not good. I told the journalists that I have my vision and I’m the coach,” he said.

Tunisia in another Group C match played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, defeated Uganda 3-1.

In other matches played in Group D, DR Congo defeated Benin Republic with a slim 1-0, while Senegal defeated Botswana 3-0 to top the group.

Nigeria will continue their campaign in the group when they take on Tunisia on Saturday in Fes while Tanzania will also slug it out with Uganda on Saturday.

11,444 spectators were in attendance.

The Super Eagles will face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo for a place in the World Cup play-offs following their convincing victory over Gabon on Wednesday.

Osimhen scored twice for Nigeria in extra time, while Chidera Ejuke also found the net, after Mario Lemina’s late equaliser had forced the contest beyond 90 minutes.

Gabon survived an early scare in the fourth minute when Akor Adams’ close-range effort was blocked by goalkeeper, Loyce Mbaba, after the defence failed to clear a long ball from Alex Iwobi.

Osimhen remained a constant threat for the Super Eagles, forcing a diving save from Mbaba after connecting with Iwobi’s cross, before missing narrowly with an awkward strike moments later.

Referee Abongile Tom consulted the pitchside VAR monitor early in the second half after Gabon appealed for a penalty when Bright Osayi-Samuel pulled Aaron Appindangoye’s shirt during a corner.

However, he declined to award a spot kick.

Appindangoye’s mistake gifted Nigeria the lead 12 minutes from time when his misplaced pass was intercepted by Adams, who rounded Mbaba before finishing into an empty net.

Gabon drew level late on through Lemina, whose curling effort deflected past Stanley Nwabali at the near post. Osimhen then missed a gilt-edged chance for a winner deep into stoppage time.

Nigeria eventually found their composure in extra time, with Ejuke and Osimhen both scoring clinical finishes across goal in the first period before the Napoli forward sealed the win with another strike in the second.

Osimhen redeemed himself after missing a late opportunity in normal time, scoring twice in extra time to guide Nigeria through.

The 26-year-old now has 11 goals in his last eight matches for club and country, including two hat-tricks and two braces.

Ejuke also opened his account for Nigeria as the Super Eagles aim to reach the World Cup finals for the seventh time in their history, and the first since 2018.
