President and Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of Inspirational Global Network, Dr Segun Oshinaga, has given insight into how entrepreneurs can maximise their potential despite the global economic downturn.

He gave the insight while delivering a paper at a two-day workshop for MBA students of the University of Port Harcourt Business School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Oshinaga spoke on the topic: “Building Entrepreneurship Capacity: Turning Ideas to Products.”

According to him, an entrepreneur is a creator or marketer of value.

He explained that the value chain stretches from having an idea, developing the idea into a product, and also ensuring that the product finds a place in the marketplace until it is patronised.

While stressing that every man is a born industry, he urged the MBA students “to cultivate the capacity to create value, build a team, brand it, and develop winning strategies.”

Giving further insight, Oshinaga said every value starts from the place of an idea.

“You need to nurture your idea and breath on it. It does not matter what people say about the idea as long as it comes from within you, begin to nurture it. It is like a nursery bed that has to be watered. The more you nurture your idea, the more it becomes a reality.”

READ ALSO: Boko Haram infiltrates protest in Borno, kills four, injures 34

He said however that the entrepreneur must not be rigid and set in his mind.

“You’ve got to open up yourself to new ideas and innovations and suggestions. Cultivate a mindset that is open to new possibilities. Surround yourself with diverse perspectives, experiences, and knowledge sources to stimulate idea generation,” he advised.

Beyond nurturing a new idea, he said, “the entrepreneur must engage in activities such as reading, brainstorming, and exploring new fields. These activities will nurture your creativity.”

He told the budding entrepreneurs to also identify how they can use their gifts to create value for others in the marketplace.

“It is not enough to be gifted. You must ensure that your gift can be exchanged for fair compensation. That is why you must continuously refine and adapt your approach to ensure the long-term sustainability and profitability of your passion-driven endeavours,” he said.

While noting that there is a global economic downturn, he stated that a man who creates value will always be in demand.

According to him, “by harnessing the power of ideas, using education as a tool for self-discovery, trading your gifts in the marketplace, and turning your passions into profitable ventures, you can create significant value and achieve success in your personal and professional life.

“This approach empowers you to leverage your unique strengths, interests, and abilities to make a meaningful impact and achieve financial independence.”

By SEGUN OSHINAGA

You need to throw all you’ve got into your dream and vision. The key to victory is total commitment to whatever project you have started. Half measures bring half result or no result at all. The principle of commitment is a principle you cannot violate if you want to get results.

“Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

Absolute commitment of all mental, physical and spiritual resources at one’s disposal is needed to pursue any goal. Without total commitment, failure is inevitable. In fact, any goal that one cannot commit all to is not a desirable goal.

Whatever dream, vision, project, business or assignment you have received or accepted deserves nothing but your very best. Commitment is the bridge between an idea and its fulfillment. When commitment is missing, the fuel is shut off. It is not enough to just be interested in something. Commitment is the binding of the heart, mind and soul into something you care about.

Whatever dream, vision, project, business or assignment you have received or accepted deserves nothing but your very best. Commitment is the bridge between an idea and its fulfillment.

”With ALL your strength…’ Not some or a few. Not when you like to or feel like it. All! Commitment spares nothing and gives no quarter. It is going all the way, regardless of circumstances or conditions.

So go on a limb. Throw all you’ve got into it. For a while, it will hurt but that is the only way to birth a vision or realize a dream. Keep pounding, shifting, pushing and beating. No retreat, no surrender. Those who make things happen learn to push themselves and everything and everybody in their way towards their dream or goal.

No price is too high to pay, no mountain too high to climb and no pain is too much to bear for a dream you want to see come alive.

READ ALSO: Matthew Simpa’s gripping novel, ‘Juliet’, unveiled

“Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good.” Ecclesiastes 11:6

Constancy of efforts is key to commitment. It is not enough to stand; keep standing. It is not enough to work; keep working. Not enough to give; keep giving.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manners of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamed would have come his way.” John Roger and Peter Mcwilliams.

Nothing ever worthwhile is ever accomplished without commitment. Nothing that ever moves the world or shakes things up is ever found without commitment. Ideas, technologies and people who ever gave the world a break have always been because of ruthless, relentless commitment. The march of history is always propelled by a ceaseless, unrelenting and combative energy.

Keep going! Keep giving! Don’t you stop.

The world is waiting for your arrival.

Many are accustomed to living in fantasy island. They build castles in the air and their emotions suffer a devastating crash when reality beckons. False expectations impact negatively on our emotions when the chips are down. Emotionally matured people expect trouble and difficulties and are willing to work their way through them with God’s help.

The truth is that life is a series of ups and downs, good and bad, sweet and sour and those who survive learn to take each day at a time, trusting God to see them through.

“Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” -Psalms 46:2

There are times in our lives when the earth seem to literally move (when life is tough and circumstances are unbearable) and the mountains seem to be carried into the midst of the sea (we lose control of our affairs). The comfort is that we will trust the Lord through those tough times. We know that weeping will not last forever, that joy is coming on the way at the break of the day.

READ ALSO: Mohbad: Police set up special team to unravel cause of death

The illusion of invincibility

Pentecostalism has been buffeted by emotional yoyos. The faith movement has been a tremendous boost and yet, it has been responsible for severe emotional instability in many believers. In the early 1980’s, many in the faith movement literarily lived in some kind of spiritual bubble. A famous faith church in Lagos even rewrote marriage solemnization creed, For better, For Worse.

The faith movement has been a tremendous boost and yet, it has been responsible for severe emotional instability in many believers.

Groom: I,____, take thee,_____, to be my wedded Wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth.

They changed it to: Groom: I,____, take thee,_____, to be my wedded Wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for better, for richer for richer, in health and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth.

The idea was to banish negativity and not confess evil. But they ended up stretching the Scripture and losing their grip on reality. Despite our faith, life still happens and it is not always pleasant.

I came across a quote that blessed me tremendously: ‘Faith is not about everything turning out okay. Faith is about being okay no matter how things turn out.’

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” -John 16:33

If we stay in the word and not some fuzzy pentecostal bubble, we will know that God can save us from the fire, in the fire or through the fire. Whichever He does is entirely up to Him; His plans, purposes and destiny for each of us. Whatever He does, our place and role should be worship and thanksgiving.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (New International Version)

Cooperation is not just a utility for social well being but a vital mechanism for the survival of the human race. We are structurally and physically dependent on one another. It is not an accident at all that when we are born, we are entirely dependent on others for everything. The first few years of our lives are a study in dependency. We are completely unable to do anything for ourselves. This dependency repeats itself in old age. The older we get, we also begin to lean and depend on others. That should tell us something fundamental about human nature.

Frailty defines early years and frailty defines our old age. We are often deluded by the vigour of adolescence, vitality of youth, and strength of middle age. At the height of our powers and strength, we are tempted to act as though we are invincible and unconquerable. I will never forget the last and dying days of my father. He was a strong and fiery man. Even though I was his only son, I never felt comfortable with him in a room together. He seemed too harsh, too hard and too tough. His voice boomed through the house. As a young man, I stammered. It was so bad it took me several minutes to finish a short sentence. The fear of my father made it worse. When he called my name, Segun, it was like I was summoned for life sentencing.

That you don’t need any help from anyone now does not mean you won’t need help tomorrow. Today may be yours; tomorrow may be for others’.

I can’t remember ever hugging him. Those were considered weakness and feminine in those days. If for whatever reason, he placed his hands on my shoulder, I would freeze in fright. But in his old age, he wanted to be held and touched but it was too late. Once, I remember him asking me why I was so scared of him. He wanted to know if he carried fire on his head to which I responded – yes. A few weeks before he died, I was helping him into his car on his way to the hospital. When he was seated, he looked me in the face and said, ‘it is me being carried, I can’t believe it.’

READ ALSO: Broaden your perspective and raise your standards, By Alex Ogundadegbe

He wasn’t a bad man. That was how he was trained. Men were supposed to be strong, hard and tough. The lesson in our text is that no one is so strong that he won’t need the love, support and encouragement of others.

‘Two people are better than one.’

Always! Just because you’re so strong, blessed and sufficient now should not blind you to the fact that you will not always be strong. That you don’t need any help from anyone now does not mean you won’t need help tomorrow. Today may be yours; tomorrow may be for others’. In your strength, remember your weakness.

Circumstances of life often require the support, love and help of others. And if you’re going to expect the support, love and help of others, you have to be willing to give it to others.
