Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the LOC members to approach the assignment with dedication, professionalism and a clear sense of purpose.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Local Organising Committee’s responsibility as a significant step towards advancing sports development in Nigeria.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the National Intermediate Games would provide a platform for young athletes across the country to discover and showcase their talents while creating opportunities for growth and excellence in sports.

He said Lagos State’s decision to host the competition in October 2026 reflected its commitment to youth empowerment and sports development, noting that the event would also foster social inclusion, national integration and cultural exchange among participants from different parts of the country.

“The games represent more than a sporting event. They are an investment into the future of our young people and an avenue to strengthen unity and create opportunities through sports,” he said.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Local Organising Committee, LOC, led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade, Governor Sanwo-Olu said his administration held sporting activities in high esteem and would continue to put sports in a position it belonged.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the reforms spearheaded by both the Director-General and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission for putting sports and sporting activities on an impressive trajectory.

“Sporting activities are not magic; they are a deliberate, intentional investment that you must build up on. You must create, follow up and follow through to get to the desire you want,” he said.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade, commended the Lagos State government for its sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth development.

Olopade noted that Lagos had consistently demonstrated leadership in hosting major sporting events and expressed confidence in Lagos State’s capacity to successfully host the maiden National Intermediate Games.

He said, “The 8.8 trillion dollar economy of sports that is going to happen in the next 20 years has Lagos with a footprint in it already. It is not a difficult decision for us to choose Lagos as the host state for the maiden National Intermediate Games. Lagos has been a pillar of support for us in the National Sports Commission in every aspect of sporting activities.”

Speaking during the inauguration on behalf of the Local Organising Committee, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and Co-Chairman of the LOC, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for the confidence reposed in the committee.

He assured that Local Organising Committee members would work tirelessly to deliver a successful tournament that would positively impact millions of Nigerian youths and position them for greater opportunities on the global stage.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, also expressed the readiness of Lagos to host the maiden National Intermediate Games.

The National Intermediate Games is expected to bring together young athletes from across the country, providing a pathway for talent identification, development and national sports growth.

I thank the organisers of this award and I am taking this up as a big challenge to work harder with my team and open new frontiers to further boost the development of sports in Nigeria.

Observers have commended her managerial prowess at organising sporting events which have since witnessed an upscale in deliverables since she took charge of the affairs of the company.

Top on the bill being the globally recognised Access Bank Lagos City Marathon which has since grown in leaps and bounds.

With a background in event management, she has been able to fuse her vast experience into delivering a top-notch road race to the surprise of many.

“It’s a rare privilege to be nominated for the Newstap/SWAN 5-Star Award. It’s amazing because of what we are doing in sports,” she continued, “I want to thank Newstap and SWAN for the recognition. We will be doing more and more amazing things in sports.”

Olapade who is the first woman to be nominated as one of the recipients of award now in its second edition, was presented with her letter of nomination by the Local Organizing Committee led by CEO and Publisher-In-Chief George Aluo.

In his remarks, Aluo recalled the essence of the awards which is mainly to recognise and honour individuals and  organisations who have dedicated their resources at creating values in the industry for the benefit of stakeholders like the teeming  youths in the country.

“We at the Newstap Communications in collaboration with the National Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have decided to take a path at encouraging individuals and bodies who have been able to create impact in our industry with this award. To this end, five individuals or organisations who are agents of change and making positive impact on sports are honored.

“People have seen your impact on sports since you took charge at Nilayo Sports Management Limited from your husband who is now the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC). You have been able to take it a notch higher and for this stride, the selection committee decided to name you as one of the recipients of the second edition of the this prestigious awards.”

Other members present at the letter presentation were  the LOC chairman, Adekunle Salami, John Joshua -Akanji and Tayo Ogunseye.

Other nominees are the Governor of Bayelsa State, Duoye Diri, DG/CEO National Institute for Sports Comrade Phillip Shaibu, Proprietor of Yacateco Boxing Promotions Omolei Imadu and Chief Robert Onyeani: Proprietor, Ahudiya Nnem FC.

This edition will hold on March 6 at the Eko Club, Lagos.

The feat guarantees Nigeria its first World Taekwondo championship medal in two decades, marking a remarkable comeback for the nation on the global stage.

Anyanacho, delivered a stellar performance in the women’s -67kg category, defeating Uzbekistan’s Sobibronova O. in two fiercely contested rounds — 8–6 and 10–9, to book her place in the semi-finals.

This achievement comes at a time of renewed optimism within the Nigerian sports ecosystem, following the successful elections of new sports federation leaders, including the new president of the Nigerian Taekwondo Federation, Tayo Popoola.

Speaking on the achievement, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Bukola Olopade, commended Anyanacho for her resilience and excellence, describing the victory as a “powerful statement of Nigeria’s resurgence in global sports.”

“Elizabeth Anyanacho has reminded the world that Nigeria’s sporting spirit remains unbreakable. Her performance in China is not just a personal triumph but a national victory that reflects the results of our renewed focus on athlete development and sports federation reforms. This medal breaks a 20-year wait and signals a new era for Nigerian Taekwondo. We are incredibly proud of her and of the leadership now steering the federation toward greater heights.”

Taekwondo has joined a long list of international championships that Nigeria has excelled in this year, which includes cricket, basketball, arm wrestling, badminton, swimming, etc.

The president was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications and former Minister of Sports Mr. Sunday Dare.

In his remarks, President Tinubu described the Games as a “veritable platform for discovering and nurturing talents” that have gone on to represent Nigeria at local, continental, and international levels.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, stressing that sports remained a unifying force for the nation.

“Very recently, we witnessed the president, alongside the First Lady, cheering the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress. That show of support underscores the administration’s firm commitment to continue investing in sports and strengthening development across the country,” he said.

The president commended the National Sports Commission under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade for their efforts in promoting youth and grassroots development.

He also lauded the Delta State government for hosting the Games, noting that Asaba had gradually become the headquarters of sports competitions in Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the host state, Delta Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, described the event as a celebration of Nigeria’s youth, unity, and future.

He said Delta State, regarded as the Home of Champions, has consistently produced sports icons such as Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Blessing Okagbare, and Ese Brume.

According to him, the state has continued to back this tradition with heavy investments in modern sporting facilities, youth empowerment, and grassroots competitions.

“Hosting this Games for the third time in a row is a proof of our commitment to grassroots sports. We believe in catching them young, giving our youth the platform to excel and bring glory to Nigeria,” he added.

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, described the Youth Games as central to building a strong pathway that links grassroots talent to elite performance and podium success.

Earlier, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Onoriode Oborevwori, assured participants of an excellent hosting experience.

“From upgraded facilities to efficient logistics and a welcoming environment, Asaba is set to offer not just a sporting event, but a memorable experience,” he said.

Established in 2013, the National Youth Games serves as a platform for talent discovery and national unity.

Delta State, hosting for the third consecutive time, has dominated the competition by winning all eight previous editions.

This year, over 6,000 athletes from across the country are competing for medals in 37 sports at the Games.

The game opened with a strong start from both sides but the Nigerian team took the first quarter 18–14.

Madagascar fought back in the second quarter, edging it 23–20, but D’Tigers held on to a narrow halftime lead of 38–37.

In the second half, the Nigerian team shifted gears, displaying defensive discipline, swift ball movement, and efficient shooting.

They dominated the third quarter 17–9, building a comfortable cushion before sealing the contest with a 22–13 surge in the final quarter.

Caleb Agada led from the front with an all-round display, finishing with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

Stan Okoye chipped in with 13 points, while Ike Nwamu added 12 points, with the trio’s leadership and experience proving pivotal in rallying the team through the decisive stages.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, praised the team’s resilience and composure, particularly in the third and fourth quarters, where Nigeria’s brave adjustments shut down Madagascar’s scoring rhythm.

The Nigerian U19 Women’s Basketball Team secured a thrilling 93-88 victory over China in their opening group match.

Despite trailing 44-38 at halftime, the Nigerian girls mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, showcasing resilience, skill, and heart.

NSC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, hailed the performance as a “victory of belief and preparation,” commending the athletes for making the nation proud on the global stage.

“This victory is not just a win on the court—it is a statement of what Nigerian sports can achieve with focus, teamwork, and the right support. Our J’Tigress U19 girls have demonstrated courage and resilience, and we are extremely proud of them,” said Mallam Shehu Dikko.

The match played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan Lagos Island, saw the Rivers ladies coming from two goals down to overpower the Nasarawa Amazons.

It was a thrilling encounter which saw the Amazons almost dethroning the River Angels who have become perennial champions.

The Amazons scored two great goals through Olushola Shobawale in the 7th and 17th minutes respectively to end the first half.

Rivers Angels, with their intimidating record, continued their onslaught at the start of the second half and were soon rewarded by Taiwo Ajibade’s brilliance.

She latched onto a through pass in the 57th minute to beat Amazons goalkeeper.

It took Afolabi another five minutes to equalise the game for Rivers Angels following a goalmouth scramble.

The encounter eventually ended in a shootout which saw Rivers Angels produce a superb 6-4 win in the penalty shootout.

Amazons star player, Shobowale, expressed disappointment over the loss.

“We played well to win the match, but unfortunately it did not happen. We are happy to have reached the final; we just have to go and work harder next time,” Shobowale said.

Similarly, Rivers Angels star player, Afolabi, said that she was happy with the result.

“It was a tough match. We worked very hard to beat Amazons and it paid off. We are very proud of our achievement,” she said.

In a related development, Kwara United emerged winners of the men’s President Federation Cup after defeating Abakaliki FC, 4-3 on penalties.

The match ended 0-0 in regulation time, as both sides failed to find the back of the net.

Kwara United, having missed their first kick in spite of their player losing the first penalty kick, converted their remaining four kicks, as against the three kicks converted by the Abakiliki team.

Kwara United star player, Victor Adeoye, who won the competition’s Most Valuable Player Award, attributed their win to hard work.

He said that the support from the state government was enough motivation which propelled them to victory.

“We are proud to have won a trophy after 49 years.

“It’s a great day in our history. God did this for us and we are thankful for our governor who has supported us financially and morally to achieve this feat,” Adeoye said.

The 2025 President Federation Cup had in attendance former Super Eagles players, Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and his Kwara State counterpart, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as well as Shehu Dikko, Chairman, National Sports Commission, NSC, were among the dignitaries that watched the encounter.

The biennial festival is to officially commence on Sunday.

The Director General, National Sports Commission, NSC, Bukola Olopade, made the disclosure on Saturday in Abeokuta.

Olopade said that there were visible signs that the state would host the best festival in the history of the country.

“Twenty-three states are already in the camp; their feeding and welfare are top-notch and seamless.

“I just spoke with leaders of four states who are already praising the state.

“Globally, if you have an event of this nature, the first thing is accommodation and feeding,” he said.

Finishing touches were ongoing at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, venue of the opening ceremony.

Different cultural troops were at the main bowl of the stadium rehearsing performances for the ceremony.

Some sports fans and analysts expressed confidence that the festival would surpass the successes recorded in the last edition in Delta State.

Mr Abiodun Alabi, Abeokuta-based sports journalist, said he believed that the sports festival would be better than the previous edition.

Alabi expressed hope that new talents would be discovered from the festival.

“The event will throw more talents that will go on to represent Nigeria at national and international events. It will also create expected economic opportunities for the people of the state.

“The game already left a legacy in terms of infrastructure; the MKO Abiola Stadium, with its new look and capacity, can now host major international events,” he said.

“Already we have three events coming after this festival, and that’s clearly one of the things that come with a national sports festival.”

Mr Micheal Adesanya, a sports fan, expressed confidence that the festival would come out as a good event in terms of the quality of athletes and talent discovery.

Adesanya noted that the festival was to promote unity among Nigerians.

He appealed to the organisers not to politicise the games, calling on authorities to ensure that proper talents were discovered to replace ageing ones.

Christianah Ogunsanya in the 53kg set the dice rolling for Nigeria, outclassing Ivorian Nogona Bakayoko 11-0 to clinch Nigeria’s first gold and her third African title.

In the 62kg Esther Kolawole outperformed Egyptian Al Mohamed Husseni 10-0  to win her third Africa title.

Damola Hannah Ojo followed the gold winning trajectory with a 6-0 victory over Ivorian Amy Youin.

In a concluding bout for day-one, Hannah Reuben in 68kg category dispatched Mariam Mesbah of Egypt 11-0 to make it four gold for Nigeria.

Reacting to the victory in Morocco, President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, NWF,  Daniel Igali who led the delegation, expressed satisfaction with the performance, stressing that the athletes gave their all.

“I’ve been very impressed with the way they wrestled, and I think if they continue in that trajectory, Nigeria should be hopeful of many gold medals.

“I thank Nigerians, particularly the National Sports Commission led by Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade and the Bayelsa government among others for always supporting our activities .

“We hope to make everyone proud later when the final matches resume,” Igali said.

Igali singled out the outstanding support of the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi to the athletes in complimenting the Federation’s efforts.

Meanwhile, Mercy Genesis,50kg, Adijat Idris, 55kg, Ebipatei Mughenbofa,65kg, Jumoke Adekoye 59kg, and Ebi Biogos, 72kg will compete in Day-two for the women’s freestyle.

Stephen Izolo 65kg, Ebikeme Newlife 92kg, Oluwafemi Jackson 86kg, and Saviour Egoli 61kg will hope to add to the gold sweep for Team Nigeria when the men’s freestyle bout resumes on Sunday.

The 2025 African Senior Wrestling Championships which started on April 29 in Casablanca, Morocco is expected to end on May 4.
