The Police Command in Ondo State has confirmed the abduction of a couple by gunmen on Friday evening in Ilu-Abo Community in Akure North local government area of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, said one other person also sustained a gunshot wound.

Jimoh explained that the couple, Mr Jamiu Olawale, and his wife, residents of Olaribigba Estate, Ilu-Abo, were whisked away by the gunmen at about 9:45 p.m. on February 20.

“The couple had just returned home from their shop in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry when they were attacked at the frontage of their residence by the gunmen, who reportedly emerged from the surrounding bush.

“The attackers abducted the couple and whisked them away to an unknown destination.

“During the incident, a neighbour, Mr Patrick Ilumaro, who was seated in front of his residence, sustained a gunshot wound.

“He was promptly rushed to the hospital where he is currently receiving medical treatment,” he said.

Jimoh explained that the Commissioner of Police, CP, Adebowale Lawal, immediately deployed tactical teams alongside conventional operatives to comb the surrounding bushes and adjoining areas.

According to him, concerted efforts are ongoing to ensure the abducted persons are unhurt and safely returned, and to apprehend the perpetrators for justice to prevail.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.

“Meanwhile, the command urges them to provide credible and actionable information, that may assist in the investigation, to the nearest police station,” he said.

A new chapter in community-driven education support was opened on Friday, February 6, 2026, in Abeokuta North local government area, Ogun State, with the inauguration and handing over of a solar-powered Mini Community Library, delivered through a strategic partnership between After God’s Heart Incorporated, AGH, and the Association of Mass Communication Students (AMACOS), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Alumni, Class of 1994–1999.

The facility was formally handed over to the Abeokuta North local government at the Baptist Primary School, Ita Iyalode, Abeokuta, to serve students and residents of the community, reinforcing the role of collaboration between civil society organisations, alumni groups, and government in advancing access to quality education.

Speaking at the event, President of AMACOS 94/99 Alumni Group, Mr. Moruff Adenekan, described the project as a product of shared vision, compassion, and purposeful collaboration.

He said the initiative was inspired by AGH’s belief that sustainable societal transformation began with access to knowledge.

According to him, the founder of AGH, Dr. David Olawale, had consistently emphasised the importance of education as a catalyst for long-term development.

“If we truly want to change society, we must first give children access to knowledge—because education is the seed from which every lasting transformation grows,” Adenekan asserted.

Reiterating Dr. Olawale’s position, he said, “When we invest in education, we are not helping people for a moment—we are shaping futures for generations.”

The AMACOS 94/99 Alumni Group noted that AGH’s intervention was motivated by concerns over declining academic performance and the absence of functional, accessible libraries for students.

Rather than offering sympathy, Adenekan said AGH provided structure, resources, and hope by partnering with AMACOS 94/99 Alumni Group to create a learning environment designed to restore confidence, discipline, and aspiration among young people.

Beyond books, the Mini Community Library was designed to support uninterrupted learning, as it is solar-powered and stocked with materials covering Science, Arts, and Commercial subjects, targeting students at critical stages of their academic journey.

Adenekan quoted Dr. Olawale, whose NGO is based in Indiana, United States, as saying, “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not – and it is our duty to close that gap.”

He explained that the project was delivered with deliberate local impact, as youths within the local government were engaged.

Furniture and everything used in the Library were produced and purchased within Abeokuta North local government, thus small traders benefitted from procurement.

That, he said, reflected AGH’s philosophy of empowering people while solving problems—a value shared by AMACOS 94/99 Alumni Group.

In further demonstration of its commitment to education, the AMACOS 94/99 Alumni Group announced additional interventions at the event as Adenekan disclosed that the association had mobilised 70 Unity Schools Common Entrance examination forms for indigent pupils in Abeokuta North local government to encourage academic excellence.

He also revealed plans to work with relevant organisations and individuals to organise a two-month WAEC and JAMB extra-tutorial programme between March and May 2026, aimed at improving students’ performance ahead of external examinations.

Describing the library project as a legacy initiative of the AMACOS 94/99 Set, guided by the belief that “We Are Better Together,” Adenekan noted that the presence of an AMACOS 94/99 Alumnus as Chairman of Abeokuta North further strengthened the resolve to support a meaningful education project within the local government.

While receiving the facility, the chairman of Abeokuta North local government, Hon. Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, expressed appreciation to AGH and AMACOS 94/99 for the initiative, describing the library as a welcome development for the area.

He appealed for continued support, noting that the local government had over 20,000 pupils across more than 86 public primary schools.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between civil society organisations, alumni associations, and the government in addressing education challenges.

As the facility was formally handed over, both AGH and AMACOS 94/99 expressed confidence that the library would be protected, properly managed, and fully utilised.

Adenekan said it was expected to serve as a refuge for diligent students, a launch-pad for academic excellence, and a symbol of what purposeful collaboration can achieve.

Lagos State government has sealed Tower College of Health Sciences in Gberigbe, Ikorodu, for operating an illegal nursing programme.

A joint enforcement team on Thursday, comprising officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health through the Directorate of Nursing Services, DNS, the Nursing and Midwifery Committee of Lagos State, and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwife, NANNM, Lagos State branch, with men of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, stormed the school premises to enforce the closure.

During the operation, the Director of the college, Femi Ajekigbe was arrested and has been taken into custody for questioning and further legal action by the state.

Speaking to journalists after the closure, Mrs Sola Aketi, the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health, noted that the institution had been notified of the imminent closure after an inspection team from the Nursing and Midwifery Committee of the state had earlier visited the institution in January 20, 2025, to assess its compliance with standards but several irregularities were uncovered.

According to her, the team led by Dr. Oladapo Olawale, alongside Nurse Ilawole, Comrade Ayobami Amusan and Comrade Idowu Osuntuyi reported that Tower College of Health Sciences failed to meet basic academic and infrastructural requirements for nursing education and consequently lacked accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN.

She confirmed that Tower College is just one of many unaccredited institutions operating in Lagos and vowed to extend the clampdown to other illegal nursing schools as the state would no longer condone such dangerous death traps.

Aketi said, “As a result of this closure, the illegal institution will cease all nursing training and educational activities with immediate effect.

“We have several of these schools across the state, and we will not stop until they are all shut down.

“Any further operation of the college is considered unauthorized and dangerous to the people of Ikorodu and Lagos in general,” she added.

She warned that activities of these unapproved health institutions are dangerous and inimical to the well-being of any society and weaken the state healthcare delivery system.

Dr. Olawale Oladapo, who led the team in January 20, 2025 had advised the Association and the state government that the school lacked basic requirements needed for accreditation and so included in his report the immediate closure of the illegal school for the safety of the people.

In his report, he observed that, “the school had no demonstration room, no hospital affiliation for clinical postings, and no hostel accommodation for students who shockingly were already in their 300 level without undergoing any clinical training and resource verification from the nursing council.

“The inspection committee, however, recommended the immediate closure of the school, withdrawal of all students, and also the licenses of individuals parading themselves as nursing tutors without approval,” Oladapo noted.

Following the report, the Nursing and Midwifery Committee of the state and the Lagos State Ministry of Health issued a formal closure notice dated 20th February 2025, signed by Dr. Olawale Oladapo, Secretary of the committee.

The letter stated that the decision to close the institution was due to failure to meet the minimum standards for accreditation as outlined in NMCN regulations, non-compliance with repeated warnings to correct identified deficiencies and evidence of substandard training and education, posing risks to the health, safety, and wellbeing of students and the public.

The premises have since been sealed and placed under surveillance to prevent any further unauthorized operation of the college as contrary action will be considered unauthorized and may result in legal action.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike, over alleged breach of agreement.

The union made this known in a statement by its National President, Mr Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Mr Afolabi Olawale, on Thursday in Abuja.

The union accused Dangote Group of violating a peace agreement brokered by the federal government.

According to the statement, the peace pact was signed on Tuesday at the DSS headquarters to guarantee workers’ rights and industrial harmony.

“On September 10, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata instructed all his truck drivers, who have been members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of NUPENG for several years, to remove union stickers from their trucks.

READ ALSO: Amotekun arrests three suspected burglars in Osun

“On September 11, he further directed the drivers to storm the Dangote Refinery for loading, in spite of our officials blocking them over violations of established loading rules and regulations.

“We are, by this statement, placing all our members on red alert for the possible resumption of the suspended nationwide industrial action,” it said.

The union urged organised labour and civil society organisations to resist what it described as threats from the capitalist class.

”We call on everyone to let Alhaji Sayyu Dantata know that he is not bigger than Nigeria.

“We strongly condemn his disregard for official institutions of this great country,” the union stated.

NUPENG also warned against the use of security agencies to intimidate workers and urged the federal government to intervene promptly.

It further called for solidarity from the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and civil society groups.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has protested what it described as Aliko Dangote’s anti-union agenda in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

This was stated in a joint statement signed by Mr Williams Akporeha, National Executive President, and Mr Aflabi Olawale, Secretary General of the union on Friday in Abuja.

The union accused Dangote and his cousin, Sayyu Dantata, of plotting to create a monopoly that threatened jobs, unions, and the economic rights of Nigerians.

“NUPENG is seriously concerned and disturbed with the unconscionable business practices of Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote who are scared of allowing unions to exist in their business outfits.

“To us, amassing wealth on the basis of enslavement, depriving workers of a union and voice amounts to creating filthy wealth.

“NUPENG will not stand idly by while these billionaires seek to destroy the livelihoods of thousands of workers, including tanker drivers,” it said.

The union also raised concerns over Dangote’s plan to import 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, trucks for fuel distribution, which NUPENG claimed was a scheme to dominate the downstream sector.

READ ALSO: Authorities declare new Ebola outbreak in DR Congo

According to NUPENG, new drivers recruited under the scheme are being forced to sign agreements preventing them from joining existing trade unions, a move the union has labeled unconstitutional.

Union leaders stated that the practice violated workers’ rights protected under Nigeria’s Constitution and international labour conventions ratified by the country since 1960.

“This is not philanthropy, it is economic sabotage. Dangote’s plan will enslave workers, crush competition, and ultimately raise fuel prices for ordinary Nigerians.

“Therefore, all the members of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of NUPENG will from Monday, Sept. 8 start looking for alternative employments and skills and sources of livelihoods,” the union said.

NUPENG urged the federal government through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to intervene, warning that failure to act would encourage “tyrannical, anti-union business practices.”

The union also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC, and international labour organisations to prepare for mass protests and industrial action in solidarity.

“Workers are no slaves, to resist unions is to resist collective bargaining.

“The working class will not be sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed,” it said.

Lagos State public service ushered in a new era of service delivery, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu constituted and swore in new members into the State’s Civil Service Commission.

A retired Permanent Secretary and an indigene of Lagos Island, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas, was appointed by the governor to chair the statutory body pivotal to preservation of professionalism in the civil service.

The five-member commission was constituted, on Tuesday, at a ceremony held in the State House, Alausa.

Each member was nominated from each of the five traditional divisions of Lagos.

Other members of the Commission are Mr. Fatai Olalekan Lasisi; Mr. Lateef Yahaya Olawale; Mr. Afolabi Olatunji Sobowale and Mr. Rufus Adekoya Adedapo.

Inaugurating the commission, Sanwo-Olu noted that the ceremony demonstrated the commitment of the state government to uphold the principles of integrity, fairness, and efficiency essential to the efficiency of Lagos civil service and the progress of the state.

The governor said the appointment of members reflected the confidence in their ability to lead the civil service toward excellence, urging the appointees to honour the trust with dedication and wisdom.

He said: “As leaders of the Civil Service Commission, you bear the responsibility of ensuring that Lagos civil service operates with discipline and meritocracy. Your decisions will affect the quality of public services that millions of Lagosians depend on daily for quality services in different areas of life, ranging from education and healthcare to security and infrastructure.

“I urge you to lead with transparency, to foster innovation, and to create opportunities for growth within the civil service. Above all, you must be accountable to the people you serve, putting their interests above all else. While you are being entrusted with responsibility to carry out the challenging tasks, you must remember the solemn duty placed on your shoulders.”

Congratulating members of the commission for approval of their nominations, Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that the state’s civil service would continue to be a beacon of excellence and catalyst for positive change.

He said the commission should employ innovation, integrity, and efficiency to drive its activities and make Lagos public service the best model in the country.

Head of Service, Mr. Bose Agoro, who read the citations of the nominees, said the Sanwo-Olu administration’s ability to always put round pegs in round holes set the state’s civil service on the path of numerous accomplishments which made it the most vibrant public service among the sub national.

“Lagos has always ensured highest standard of excellence is upheld in the service delivery of our public service. I am confident that the expertise and experiences of these new members of the Civil Service Commission will go a long way in bringing valuable insights that will continue to shape establishment policies in our public service,” Agoro said.

Giving a note of assurance on behalf of the commission members, Mrs. Dapo-Thomas thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them to serve the state at the level.

She said: “I would like to assure the governor that we will put everything we have within our capacity to push the vision of this administration forward and make the state’s civil service a competent workforce. Our core values will be key into the agenda of the governor.”

This is contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Mr Olawale Rasheed, on Friday.

The governor directed that the curfew is from 2 p.m. to 7 a.m.

“The relaxation of the curfew is to take effect from Friday, until further notice,” he said.

The governor commended the residents for the cessation of hostility so far.

Adeleke, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the report of another killing for which the police have made an arrest, warning that “anybody or group of persons, found or caught masterminding any violent act will face the full consequences.”

The governor tasked the joint security task force to continue with their 24-hour surveillance to ensure zero tolerance for any act of lawlessness.

Additionally, the governor further directed the state emergency agency to intensify the support services for the displaced people as earlier directed.

Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the younger generation across Africa as the catalyst for developing a new economic frontier for the continent.

Abiodun stated this, when he received members of the Royal African Young Leadership Forum, an initiative of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, for young men and women of the African continent in Abeokuta on Thursday night.

While commending Oba Ogunwusi for starting a movement of an evolving leadership for Africa, the governor said that the energy and creativity of members of the forum would help reposition the continent.

He said: “I see young men and women as catalysts for Africa’s structuring of a new economic frontier.

“I believe what Ooni of Ife has started here is not just a forum but a movement, a movement of an evolving African leadership.

“I want to thank the Ooni of Ife for doing this and for doing it quietly. I believe that with the energy, creativity, versatility, and innovative thinking that you in that age group bracket possess, you are indeed the leaders of Africa today, and you must constantly remind yourselves of that.

“You must have the drive in you, you must have that spirit in you, you must have that resolve in you and it starts from this kind of association where you are meeting, mingling and sharing ideas, not just within your country, but across different countries.”

Governor Abiodun noted that the forum’s age group from 40 years downward represents between 65% and 70% of the population of the entire world.

Earlier, the Director of the Royal Forum, Tomisin Olawale, noted that the group in the last three years had done transactions in the region of N300 billion.

He said that the forum members were creating a new Africa as well as driving the new economic frontier for the continent.

The grand finale of the 27th convocation of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, has been concluded, with the school’s Best Graduating Student, Olaniyi Mubaraq Olawale, going home with N10 million cash prize awarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Olawale, a graduate of the Department of Accounting Education, finished with a Cumulative Grade Point Average, CGPA, of 4.98.

The university produced 8,477 graduands across 10 faculties, who completed their first degrees in 2022/2023 academic year.

For four consecutive sessions, the school has maintained its graduation order, sustaining its academic reputation.

The school Visitor, Governor Sanwo-Olu, congratulated the graduands for the successful completion of their programmes, noting that their attendance of the school was a privileged opportunity that would unlock their full potential.

The Governor said LASU had consistently upheld the tenets of its guiding principles and expectations of its founding fathers, praising the school’s resilience and dedication to promoting academic excellence.

This, Sanwo-Olu said, was evident in the quality of graduates the university produced yearly, adding that LASU’s alumni were equipped with quality training to excel both in learning and character, just as they were qualified to meet the manpower needs of the state and the nation.

He said: “Today marks a significant milestone for the graduands of the 2022/2023 academic session of the Lagos State University, after years of putting in the hard work and burning the midnight candle to excel various fields and programmes. You have come to a privileged moment that marks both the end of an important chapter of your lives, and the start of another chapter.

“Having conquered the peak of academic study, demonstrating unparalleled dedication and intellectual rigour, you must now strive to operate at a level of impact that reflects the outstanding knowledge you have garnered. You must push the boundaries of human knowledge and achievement.

“Your time on the campus has not been about academics alone; it is about purpose, personal growth and self-discovery. You have no doubt faced and surmounted many obstacles, and your sacrifices have now paid off. As you venture into the world, I implore you to act with integrity, live solution-focused lives, and stay resolute and focused in the pursuit of your dreams.”

READ ALSO: Police foil abduction of traditional ruler in Kaduna, wife missing

As the third most subscribed university in the country, Sanwo-Olu said he was proud of the school’s “outstanding accomplishments” during his administration, stressing that LASU was ranked the Best State University in West Africa sub-region by GreenMetric World University Ranking — a feat made possible by consistent investment committed to the school by his government.

The university, the governor added, was designated as an African Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative Stem Education, ACEITSE, while it also ranked the Best State-owned University, and ninth Overall Best University in the country.

Sanwo-Olu said his administration recognised quality education as a tool for addressing societal needs and human development, pointing out that his government’s education agenda was predicated on the need to foster a

generation of innovative thinkers, problem-solvers and great leaders that would drive sustainable development in Lagos and beyond.

He said: “LASU is recognised as Nigeria’s Most Digitally Advanced State University and Fifth Best University in Graduate Employability in Nigeria. It is crucial to appreciate the enduring importance of education. We recognise that sustaining a world-class university requires significant financial investment.

“As leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure that graduates of our educational system remain relevant and effective in proffering solutions to societal problems. As we seek to surpass previous achievements and maintain the upward trajectory of the university’s growth and development, we will live up to all our responsibilities, as envisioned in our T.H.E.M.E.S Plus agenda.”

The Chancellor, Prof. Gbolahan Elias, SAN, thanked the governor for prioritising the welfare of the university students and staff, noting that the school had benefited from its collaboration with town.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, said the school, since her appointment in 2021, had achieved a stabilised environment, while projecting the finest academic tradition to sustain the dream of its founding fathers.

She disclosed that the school recorded another milestone in its academics, creating five fresh faculties to train manpower and launch solution-based research in 20 newly accredited programmes to further improve human capital in the country.

The V-C listed the new faculties to include, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, School of Tourism, Film, Performing Arts and Cultural Studies, and also School of Library, Archival and Information Science, which is the first in any university in West Africa.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello added that students had already been admitted into the new faculties for the current 2023/2024 session.

“This administration is committed to positioning LASU as a profound research and learning hub for students yearning for most up-to-date knowledge and skill set that meet the needs of the 21st century industry. At LASU, students are equipped with right mix of knowledge to transform society and increase its prosperity for the benefit of humanity,” the V-C said.

Of the 8,477 graduands awarded first degrees, 153 finished with a First Class, while 3,029 graduated with Second Class (Upper Division).

4,350 got Second Class (Lower Division), 715 had Third class, and 228 are graduated with a Pass.

Also, the university graduated 2,164 across 13 Faculties in its School of Post-graduate Studies, including Post-graduate Diplomas, Academic Master’s, Professional Master’s, Doctor of Philosophy and Professional Doctoral degrees.

Five hundred and fifty-four candidates were awarded Diploma certificates.

Two LASU’s scholars — Prof. Amidu Olalekan Sanni and Prof. Martins Agenuma Anetekhai — were elevated to the ranks of Emeritus Professor and Distinguished Professor respectively.

An elder statesman, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, and frontline industrialist, Prince Samuel Adedoyin, became recipients of Doctorate Degrees (Honoris Causa) for their service to humanity and contribution national development.

Olusi, an 88-year-old Lagos indigene and community leader, was honoured with Doctor of Literature, History, Education and Community Development.

Adedoyin, an octogenarian industrialist and indigene of Kwara State, was awarded Doctor of Humane Letters, Industry and National Development, for his philanthropic work in the school, Lagos and the country.

Sanwo-Olu congratulated the honorary degree awardees, saying: “You are both exemplary role models and trailblazers and champions of positive change. These awards are a call for you to continue building, inspiring and mentoring.”

The Police Command in Lagos have confirmed that six additional children have been rescued from a suspected human trafficking syndicate operating from Kwara State.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

Hundeyin said: “A source, whose name I will not mention, but who has been assisting the Ijora Badia Police Division in Lagos helped in rescuing the additional six children illegally trafficked to Lagos State.

“The source brought the children to the police as promised on Tuesday at about 12.00 p.m.

“The children rescued (names withheld) were between ages 8 years and 14 years.”

The image maker said that the Ijora Badia Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ayoola Olawale, had immediately contacted CSP Alice Leramo, the Officer in Charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Kwara Police Command.

Hundeyin said that the Kwara Police Command had earlier received 12 children from Ijora Badia Police Division, rescued from the suspect since January 29.

He said that CSP Leramo had promised to re-dispatch an investigating team to Lagos to receive the additional six rescued children.

He noted that that would enable the Kwara Command to complete their investigation and reunite the children with their parents.

“All together, 18 trafficked underage children from Kwara have been rescued in Lagos, and handed over to the anti-trafficking unit of Kwara Command,” he said.

A suspected kingpin of child trafficking and labour syndicate was arrested on January 25 after three months of intelligence gathering by the police command.

Hundeyin said that the syndicate usually brought underage children from the Northern part of Nigeria to Lagos State, for child labour and other illegal activities.

He said: “On January 25, a 45-year-old leader of the syndicate, Alimot Haruna of Molete Village, Ilorin, (now in Kwara Police Command custody), was arrested by detectives from the Ijora Badia Police Division in Lagos.

“The division had been monitoring her movements.

“In the process, three underage children – two females and one male – whose names could not be ascertained between ages 7 years and 12 years of no fixed address, were rescued from her.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had illegally brought 42 children to Lagos State for child labour without the consent of their parents.

“It was also revealed that the suspect had been declared wanted by the Kwara State Police Command in connection with the disappearance of many underage children, which had been linked to her syndicate,” Hundeyin said.
