On Tuesday February 17, 2026, a Masterclass for 300-Level Mass Communication Students of the Institution held and it was an exciting session as the students demonstrated remarkable brilliance and high passion for digital relevance.

Media professional and Public Relations strategist, Dr Ayo Arowojolu, was on hand to lead the Masterclass as he took the students on the rudiments of online Journalism and the digital media generally.

The invitation was at the behest of one of the university’s lecturer, Dr Ademolu Okuneye, who was a director at the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA.

Okuneye, in his active days as a seasoned broadcaster, a newscaster, sports presenter and commentator, was popular for the current affairs programme, Actors of Democracy, which he regularly presented.

The facilitator, Dr Arowojolu, is the Initiator and Convener of the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena.

During the session, the students were first taken through what the old traditional , analogue journalism used to be in terms of the rigours reporters those days went through to write their stories and dictate them via the telephone for several hours and later going through the News Room processes until the published news stories emerged the next day.

In today’s digital era, that old practice is gone as immediacy which is real-time publishing and interactivity, have become the hallmarks in the entire gamut of online news operations.

The students were excited, asked probing questions and pledged to tap into digital possibilities with aspirations to kick-start blogs of their own mostly with niches in news, fashion, entertainment and sports.

While appreciating his guest, Okuneye said the university would always go extra length beyond theoretical knowledge in equipping the students with relevant practical hands-on skills to enhance their proficiency later in life.

Venue of the Masterclass was the state-of-the-art Chrisland Television Studio.

More details have emerged on how popular cross dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, was arrested at Seme Border on Monday.

Witnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that Bobrisky arrived at the departure axis of the border post around 1.30 a.m. on Monday in a black SUV Mercedes Benz.

According to the sources, Bobrisky was first stopped by Port health officials on duty but the driver didn’t stop until he got to Immigration check-point.

“Idris handed over his passport to the driver for stamping at the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, post.

“The immigration surveillance officer, identified as Yusuf, while going through the passport, detected that the person inside the vehicle was Bobrisky.

READ ALSO: Flood: MUSWEN visits Zulum, Shehu of Borno, donates N50m

“He called the most senior officer on duty to the scene, and they secretly invited the Controller of Immigration, Seme Command, Mr Muhammad Adamu.

“The surveillance officer then went back to invite Bobrisky for capturing in order to stamp the passport.

“On getting to the surveillance unit for capturing, he was taken to the controller’s office for questioning,” a source told NAN.

Another source told NAN that Bobrisky’s lawyer later came to Seme to inquire why he was arrested by the personnel of the immigration command.

“Bobrisky stayed inside the controller’s office until 4.00 p.m, when he was taken to Lagos State Command of NIS for further investigation,” the source said.

NAN recalls that NIS on Monday confirmed arrest of Bobrisky at the Seme Border.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Kenneth Udo, said Bobrisky was arrested because he “is a person of interest over recent issues of public concern.”

Udo, in a statement issued in Abuja, said: “In keeping with its commitment to securing the borders, NIS intercepted Bobrisky at the Seme Border over an attempt to exit the country.”

He said that Bobrisky was undergoing interrogation and would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.

Team Lead of Platforms Africa, Mr. Adeola Yusuf, has assured hundreds of young journalists and students of Mass Communication at Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, of a promising future for journalism despite technological and economic challenges.

Adeola Yusuf, a three-time winner of the Nigeria Media Merit Award, NMMA, who delivered a lecture titled “Print Media Organisation in Nigeria From Conception To Economic Glory: Weaning The Young Journalists,” at a seminar for 300-level Mass Communication students of the university, stated that the consistent advancement in technology gave credence to his belief that no journalist who is creative should be out of job.

The media lecture also featured Nigeria’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom (UK), Sarafa Tunji-Isola; ex-information minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; TV host, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, and Chrisland University lecturer, Dr. Demolu Okuneye.

Admitting that technology posed some challenges to conventional journalism practice and made hard copy newspaper publishing and terrestrial broadcasting less lucrative, Adeola Yusuf, stated that the same technology, where properly studied and applied, had been a revenue spinner for many journalists and non-journalists in Nigeria and around the world.

“Journalism is a trade no one can escape. You are either the seller, the product or the buyer,” he said, adding that while consistent change in technology had made many trained journalists to be products and buyers of information on new media, many untrained people had been smiling to the banks for adapting to and taking full advantage of the imminent change in technology.

“Many journalists who may be complaining of what they believed are disadvantages technology has brought to their trade, use their data to watch skits by Taoma, Mark Angel, Layi Wasabi, Mr. Macaroni and Lege Miami.

READ ALSO: Again, Nigeria drops to 39th in FIFA ranking

“Some even still marvel at how Instablog9ja and Linda Ikeji make a lot of money with their hot gist and society reportage. If you do not understand or agree with how skit makers are making it through creativity, the two blogs I have mentioned are already believed by many to be practising information dissemination – something close to journalism – with the help of the same technology many professionals complained about.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: Abeokuta Bolt ride phenomenon, By Bamidele Johnson

“They (the blogs) are owned by two young and creative Nigerians who never attended university to study Mass Communication. While Linda Ikeji studied English Language at the University of Lagos, the owner of Instablog9ja, according to the blog, is Mr. Aruleba who studied an agric-related course at the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, FUNAAB. Without prejudice, these young Nigerians have done well for themselves using the tools many who were trained in Mass Communication have failed to use – technology.

The controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, on Monday, filed a notice of appeal challenging the six months maximum sentence given to him by a Federal High Court, Lagos.

Okuneye was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on four counts bordering on naira abuse.

He pleaded guilty before Justice A.O. Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Justice Awogboro, on April 12, sentenced Okuneye to six months imprisonment without an option of fine.

The judge, while sentencing the convict said the judgment should serve as a deterrent to others fond of abusing and mutilating the naira.

However, counsel for Okuneye, Mr Bimbo Kusanu, filed a notice of appeal, praying the Court of Appeal to set aside the maximum sentence.

Kusanu is asking the court to replace the sentence with an option of N50,000 fine on each of the counts.

The counsel stated in the notice of appeal that the trial court imposed the maximum sentence on the appellant, who had no previous criminal record of conviction.

He stated that there were options to impose a lesser sentence by the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA.

He averred that the sentence imposed by the trial court against the appellant was punitive and contrary to the mandatory provisions of the ACJA.

The appellant stated that the trial court did not consider the positive antecedent of the appellant, who did not waste the time of the court by pleading guilty to the charge.

He stated that the appellant honoured the invitation of the respondent on the first invitation.

He said that the trial court failed to exercise its discretion judiciously and judicially in sentencing the appellant.

He explained that such an act had occasioned a miscarriage of justice against the appellant.

A Federal High Court in Lagos State, on Friday, sentenced convicted cross dresser, Idris Okuneye (alias Bobrisky), to six months in prison for abuse of the Naira.

The court did not give the cross dresser an option of fine.

Bobrisky was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The court convicted him on April 5, following his guilty plea, but reserved sentence until April 9.

The court had ordered Okuneye to be kept in the custody of the EFCC pending sentencing.

However, due to federal government’s declaration of April 9, April 10 and April 11 public holiday, the case could not proceed as scheduled.

On Friday, Justice Abimbola Awogboro sentenced the convict without an option of fine.

The judge held that imprisonment would take effect from the date of the cross dresser’s arrest.

Okuneye was taken away by EFCC operatives immediately after his sentencing.

The EFCC had, on April 4, filed a six-count charge against Okuneye.

The charge bordered on Naira mutilation and money laundering.

He was consequently arraigned on April 5 and he pleaded guilty to the first four counts.

The court struck out the last two counts following an application by the EFCC.

On April 5, Mr Bolaji Temitope, a prosecution witness and Assistant Superintendent of EFCC, gave evidence before the court and narrated the circumstances surrounding prosecution of Okuneye.

After review of the facts of the case, EFCC counsel, Mr Suleiman Suleiman, prayed the court to convict the cross dresser.

According to EFCC, Okuneye committed the offences on March 24, at Circle Mall, Jakande, Lekki, Lagos State.

The commission stated that Okuneye tampered with the cumulative sum of N400,000 while dancing during a social event, by spraying same.

Okuneye also sprayed various tranches of money such as N20,000 and N50,000 at various events in 2022 and 2023, according to EFCC.

The offences contravene Section 21(1) Central Bank Act of 2007 and Section 19 of Money Laundering Act of 2022.
