The Police Command in Lagos State has invited Pastor Chris Okafor, Senior Pastor of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries over alleged multiple rape and other sexual offences.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed this in a statement in Lagos on Sunday evening.

She said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to carry out thorough investigation into the allegations.

According to her, the suspect has been formally served with an invitation letter through his legal representative and is expected to cooperate fully with investigators at the SCID, Panti.

“He is expected to cooperate with the police as investigations into what were described as capital offences and other serious crimes commence.

The spokesperson assured the public that the identities of victims and witnesses would be kept strictly confidential and adequately protected throughout the investigation.

Adebisi appealed to anyone with credible information or evidence relevant to the case to assist investigators by contacting the SCID directly or through the Police Public Relations Department at the Lagos State Police Command.

She assured members of the public that the investigation would be conducted in a professional, transparent, and unbiased manner, in line with the laws of the land.

The events of the last few weeks are a stark warning. They show what happens when our most private affairs – romantic betrayals and spiritual reckonings – are allowed to spill into the sprawling digital reality show, which social media has become blurring the line between private pain and public entertainment. I get the point about social media democratising communication, helping us to connect in a liberating way and, for many young Nigerians, a vital source of income within the attention economy. However, I find it difficult understanding what is entertaining when the commodity being traded is no longer just talent or comedy, but the raw, bleeding edges of human intimacy.

In what my generation will consider as a rude shock, the emerging pattern suggests that the courtroom for our relationships is no longer the in-laws residence but rather in the comment sections on social media, and the verdict now delivered in trending hashtags. In short, these two incidents offer us a distressing view into this new reality, driving a conversation that sits uncomfortably between gossip and a serious sociological crisis. On one hand, we have the chaotic implosion of the relationship between Gen Z TikTok stars, Peller and Jarvis. On the other, we have the scandalous fallout between a prominent social media cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, and Nollywood actress, Doris Ogala.

The two cases differ in the demographics of the players – one pair represents the chaotic energy of the “Indomie generation,” while the other involves a mixture of religion and cinema. The immediate trigger for this cultural shift might seem like mere gossip, but the process bears a frightening resemblance to a public trial. Take the case of Peller and Jarvis. Their relationship was a classic study in what sociologists call dramaturgy – the meticulous performance of self on life’s stage. Their social media feeds were the ‘front stage’: a carefully curated stream of #CoupleGoals content, lavish gifts, and loved-up collaborations designed for an audience of millions. This was not just a romance; it was a joint venture; a brand built on performative intimacy. I bet they had no idea that this very archive of affection would one day be weaponised.

When the acrimonious breakup exploded online, it was a catastrophic backstage spill onto the front stage. Accusations of infidelity and financial exploitation were not whispered privately but broadcast on LIVE videos, their past content re-contextualised as evidence of deceit. Their followers, who had developed parasocial relationships with the couple – investing emotional energy in a one-sided connection – suddenly found themselves conscripted onto a jury. The conversation fractured into #TeamPeller and #TeamJarvis, with each side demanding “receipts” and delivering swift verdicts. The platform’s very design encouraged this tribalism; TikTok’s duet feature and Twitter’s quote-tweet function allowed the drama to be replicated, scaled, and sensationalised far beyond the original audience. The relationship, in its end, was treated as a corporate insolvency, with assets of reputation liquidated before a crowd.

Social media clout is seductive, working almost like a potent drug, and in the digital age, the courtroom is always open, and the audience is always hungry for the next case.

If the Peller-Jarvis saga was a messy corporate dissolution broadcast on TikTok, the case involving Pastor Chris Okafor and Doris Igala represents a more profound institutional challenge. Here, the clash was between two incompatible frames of reality. Pastor Okafor, like many spiritual figures, uses social media strategically – to majorly promote miracles, and solidify the ‘front stage’ image of the anointed ‘Man of God.’ His is a performance of anointing and authority. Doris Igala’s decision to ‘call him out’ on these same platforms was a seismic act. Her allegations of secret relationship and abandonment went beyond merely airing dirty laundry; to appropriating the power of social media to challenge what is supposed to be a traditionally unimpeachable source of spiritual authority.

Unsurprisingly, what followed typically confirms some things we know of the social media crowd. First, look at the cynicism. When Peller crashed his car, the immediate reaction from many was not concern, but doubt. “Is it a skit?” Is there just a hint here that we have become so used to scripted reality that we miss the real thing when we see it? Second, consider the transaction. In the Pastor Chris saga, comments often split along gender lines, but a recurring theme is the transactional nature of the relationship. Critics shame the woman for “dating a pastor,” implicitly suggesting that she should have known the rules of the game.

The discourse fragmented into a moral panic, where the personal became a societal parable about megachurch opacity and the vulnerability of women. The platform vernacular of Instagram—where a lengthy, emotional caption can be shared to a Stories archive—became her pulpit, while the pastor’s defence relied on the more formal, established authority of his church and legal statements. It mattered little where the truth ultimately lay; the act itself reconfigures the landscape of accountability, suggesting that when other channels feel blocked, the court of public opinion is permanently in session.

This impulse towards public tribunal is not limited to relationships. We see it in our political culture, where social media serves as the great leveller and amplifier of public sentiment as laid bare in the case involving Wike and the young soldier. The mob’s reaction was so terrifyingly swift, emotionally satisfying, and often devoid of nuance similar to the public shaming of Peller or Pastor Chris: a visceral, collective way to release pent-up tension through likes, shares, and savage memes.

So, here is the deep concern I have. These episodes are not isolated scandals but symptoms of living life on a public stage. We are encouraged, by the very architecture of these platforms, to perform our lives. For the influencer, intimacy is a metric. For the pastor, faith is a broadcast. And when these performances crack, the audience, now invested as both fan and judge, demands a spectacle. The lines between a private sorrow and public content have been obliterated, giving us a ring-side view of the commodification of conflict where personal strife has engagement value, and the incentive structure rewards escalation over resolution.

The psychology behind this is worth examining. Why would anyone choose this path? For influencers like Peller and Jarvis, the motivation is tied to the economy of attention; their livelihood depends on relevance, even if it’s fuelled by conflict. For someone like Doris Igala, it may be a desperate lever for a voice, a way to be heard when all other channels seem stacked against her. But scratch beneath the surface, and you might find signs of deeper issues that social media exacerbates – a need for validation so profound that even negative attention is preferable to silence, or an anxious attachment that mistakes public performance for genuine connection. In a culture where we ‘play too much,’ the line between serious testimony and sensationalist content can blur, with tragic consequences.

The danger, as with any mob justice, is that these digital tribunals are easily hijacked. They can be weaponised for personal vendettas, manipulated by bad actors, or simply become entertainment that consumes human dignity. One of the downsides to social media is the potential to digitally destroy people on the strength of allegations alone; and the unique persistence and searchability of digital content means the evidence never disappears means the trial can be re-opened at any time. The result: No chance of private forgiveness or reconciliation.

Trust rugged Nigerians, we will adapt. Content creators will mine the drama for skits and hot takes, growing their own followers from the rubble of another’s relationship. The cycle will continue because the platforms profit from our engagement, whether it’s inspired by love, faith, or hate.

So, what do I think about this new era of public relationships and digital reckoning? One, we are seeing the inevitable consequence of converting our private lives into scrollable feeds. Two, those foolish enough to be sucked into that undefined space are both perpetrators and victims of a system they did not create but now must survive. Third, some parts of the human experience – love, faith, betrayal, and redemption – require shadows, nuance, and a sacred privacy to ever truly heal, they should be kept away from social media.

Will they listen? I doubt. Social media clout is seductive, working almost like a potent drug, and in the digital age, the courtroom is always open, and the audience is always hungry for the next case.

The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, has convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the oil and sector to resolve issues surrounding the Dangote Refinery.

The announcement is contained in a statement by Nneamaka Okafor, the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications.

The meeting which held on Monday in Abuja had in attendance Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman/ CEO, Dangote Group and Mr Farouk Ahmed, Authority Chief Executive, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA.

Others are Mr Gbenga Komolafe, Commission Chief Executive, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, and Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd.

It will be recalled that recent face-off in the industry saw the leadership of the Dangote Group, NMDPRA and NNPC Ltd. in a disagreement over some pertinent issues.

Dangote had declared that the NNPC Ltd. no longer own a 20 per cent stake in its refinery, stressing that the Nigerian oil company now owned only 7.2 per cent of the refinery due to its failure to pay the balance of their shares, which was due in June.

READ ALSO: Army hands over rescued Chibok girl to Borno govt

The NNPC Ltd. however, said the decision to cap its equity participation at the paid-up sum was made and communicated to Dangote Refinery several months ago.

The NMDPRA was also at loggerheads with Dangote over issues bordering on licenses, which the authority said the Dangote refinery was at its pre-commissioning stage while its diesel was below international standard.

Dangote, however, refuted the NMDPRA stand on the issue.

Dangote also accused the International Oil Companies, IOCs, of frustrating its refinery operations by selling crude oil to it through their foreign trading arms offering cargoes at two to four dollars per barrel, above NUPRC official price.

On this background, the minister convened the meeting to find a lasting solution to the current impasse affecting the Dangote Refinery, with all parties demonstrating commitment to collaborative and proactive problem-solving.

Lokpobiri emphasised the importance of cooperation and synergy among all stakeholders.

That, he said, would ensure the success and optimal performance of the oil and gas sector, which he described as pivotal for Nigeria’s economic growth and energy security.

The stakeholders expressed their gratitude to the minister for his exemplary leadership and timely intervention in facilitating the dialogue.

The meeting marked a significant step towards resolving the challenges and underscores the minister’s dedication to foster a conducive environment for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The coming on stream of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery with a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2023, gave impetus to the country’s oil sector as it would ensure that Nigeria is not reliant on fuel from overseas.

Rep. Dominic Okafor (APGA-Anambra) has denied receiving 140 million dollars bribe from Mr Nadeem Anjarwalla, the Binance Executive, who escaped from detention.

Okafor, who represents the Aguta Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

An online media had alleged that he received 140 million dollars bribe from Anjarwalla who was being investigated over suspected involvement in tax invasion and terrorism sponsorship.

Okafor, however, denied the allegation, threatening to take action against the organisation.

He denied knowledge of such transaction with the company, describing the report as “an attempt to tarnish that image and integrity I had built over the years.”

Okafor said that he moved a motion in the House to call for an investigation into the escape.

“Shortly after I moved that motion which was well received and a lot of people were calling to commend me; I started getting calls from my friends all over the world saying I collected bribe from this very company.

“I did a letter to them which I copied the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Clerk, Inspector General of Police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of Security Service (DSS).

“I asked them to retrieve the information within 24 hours if not I will take legal action against them. I am here to exonerate myself from such accusations aimed at tarnishing my image which I have earned over the years,” he said.

Okafor said that he joined politics from the private sector and had been a member of Rotary International Club for over 25 years.

He said that the motion which prayed for investigation and a rearrest of the executives was for the interest of the country and nothing more.

“For the online media man that accused me of collecting $140 million I do not think that it is something we would sweep under the carpet. I am discussing with my legal team to know the right action to take,” he said.

Anjarwalla and his colleague at Bianace, a cryptocurrency platform, escaped from detention in March where they were being held for alleged tax invasion and terrorism sponsorship.

By ASAJU TUNDE

When I was moving to Canada years ago, my late cousin, Pius Adesanmi, advised me to bring in Nollywood movies. YouTube and online streaming had not overtaken the world and there was no TikTok or Stories. It was perhaps the only advice I never even considered. Knowing my love for the theatre and music, he told me I would miss them.

I don’t think I do. Having been tutored and mentored by one of the nation’s best theatre tutors in Prof Akanji Nasiru and having studied literature, I did not approve of most of the skits I see on video. Pius would spend a whole day with my wife watching and analyzing Naija movies while I tried to find any distraction I could get in his house at Shoreline.

Those were the days. But I confess that comedy always gets me. Reels get me more because I can’t remember when last I sat in a theatre watching a movie in the last ten years. But I love the reels, stories and TikTok because of its wit, its conceit and the fact that it packs a lot of talent and delivery into short, pungent and poignant skits.

Mr. Ibu

It was in these bite-sized acts that I got to know Oyebamiji Tọlani Quadri aka Ṣíṣí Quadri and Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor alias Mr. Ibu. The duo, like most of their counterparts in the business were frontliners whose acts would make you forget your sorrow while at the same time take pride in a nation with talents as diverse as stars in the firmament.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: Don’t end it, talk about it, By Asaju Tunde

It was therefore with deep sense pf professional loss that I learnt of the death in succession first of Sisi Quadri, the man who yabs for money and his colleague, Mr. Ibu. While Mr Ibu’s health challenges were well known Ṣíṣí Quadri’s short illness and demise has left us all in a state of national shock and disbelief. It is sad that both men died within 24 hours of each other leaving us with a sense of national tragedy.

Their painful exit has reduced the decibel of our laughter at a time when the expertise of their artistry is needed to help us weather the storms of national despondency.

Their exit reminds of the transience of life encouraging us at every moment to act well our part. Both artists played their parts well and have now left us truly when the ovation ought to reach a crescendo. The shoes they have left behind would be too constricting for anyone to fit into.

Their painful exit has reduced the decibel of our laughter at a time when the expertise of their artistry is needed to help us weather the storms of national despondency.

I pray for their sweet souls to find rest and for fortitude for their families to find closure. Nigeria has truly lost two artistic giants. May their humorous souls find peaceful rest.

My personal condolences to their families and their numerous fans. They are already sorely missed but their works would continue to gladden the heart of the living. That is a legacy most of us waiting our days live for. Adieu Ṣíṣí Quadri and Mr. Ibu.

It would be recalled that in October last years, Okafor appealed to the general public and fans for financial support over an ailment when there were plans to amputate one of his legs.

The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation soon came to his rescue, paying off the medical bill.

In November, 2023, his leg was amputated as a way of keeping him alive.

A comedian of note, Okafor participated in many movies.

Women from Awgu local government area of Enugu State have placed a N1 million bounty on an Anambra woman, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, who reportedly brutalised her 11-year-old househelp.

Operating under the auspices of Umuada Awgu Global Association, UAGA, the group also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Okafor to hand herself over to the police.

The Founder and President of UAGA, Chinemerem Anyi, announced the financial reward for any informant on the fleeing woman’s whereabouts at the group’s news briefing on the matter on Thursday in Enugu.

According to Anyi, anybody who avails the police, Anambra State government or other relevant authorities with useful information that could lead to the woman’s arrest would smile home with N1 million from the group.

She said that Okafor, who hails from Anambra and lived in Onitsha, was accusing the victim of touching the private part of her eight-year-old daughter, while bathing her.

Anyi, who was flanked at the briefing by other members of the group, said “it beats our imagination that almost three weeks after the woman perpetrated the evil act, the police were still saying that she is still at large.”

She said that the organisation was beginning to smell a rat, “going by the manner the matter was being handled by the Anambra Police Command.”

She said that the group also issued the police 48-hour ultimatum to apprehend the perpetrator or incur its wrath.

She said: “The Awgu women have been resisting the temptation of taking the law into our hands over the matter as civilised people but we warn that such calm disposition should not be taken for granted or weakness.

“We are heartbroken over the barbaric act and today, we gather for this important press briefing over the recent brutalisation of our daughter, Miss Happiness Nwafor, by her wicked madam.

“We are using this platform to call on the woman to better submit herself to the police or other relevant authorities, because no matter where she is, she will be fished out.

“Our searchlight is on you and we will not rest until justice is served on this matter,” Anyi said.

The group urged the police and Anambra government to, as a matter of urgency, deploy every arsenal to apprehend the woman, saying that it was being pushed to the wall over the issue.

“Okafore has murdered sleep and cannot sleep, she has bitten more than she can chew,” it also said.

The group, therefore, called on mothers to bear the number of children they could cater for, so as to avoid giving out their underaged children as househelps.

The group had on February 7, staged a peaceful protest in Enugu, demanding justice for the victim.

In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development on Tuesday announced a N2 million reward for any person with useful information on the woman’s whereabouts.

Okafor allegedly brutalised her househelp, Happiness Nwafor, whom she brought in January to live with her.

She was reported to have inserted a hot knife into the minor’s private part and also burned her face and buttock with a hot electric iron.

Meanwhile, the Anambra Police Command has declared the woman, who is said to be at large, wanted.

The Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Enugu State branch, has raised the alarm that more than 10 doctors were victims of kidnapping and other violent crimes in less than two months in Enugu State.

The alarm was raised in a communiqué issued on Friday in Enugu at the end of an Emergency General Meeting, EGM, of the NMA, Enugu State branch, held on Tuesday at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.

The communique was jointly signed by the chairman of NMA Enugu State, Dr Celestine Ugwoke, and the General Secretary, Dr Sunday Okafor.

The association said that the EGM equally observed that a situation in which more than 10 doctors were victims of kidnapping and other violent crimes in less than two months was a dangerous trend unprecedented in the annals of Enugu State.

The communique, which has been copied to various government offices and security agencies, noted that the recent development called for serious concern, drastic and decisive action(s).

According to NMA, it was well aware of the general insecurity in the country and painfully observed the spate of kidnappings in the state, most of which Medical and Dental Practitioners had unfortunately been worst hit.

The association said it regrettably observed that there was very minimal and in some cases no presence of strong security formations in most of public hospitals as well as dwindling presence of armed patrol teams at critical times and in most areas of the state.

The NMA noted that the porous security arrangement had made the criminal elements more emboldened to operate with ease, and in the process maiming the livelihoods of its members and fellow citizens.

READ ALSO: Kaduna: Troops neutralise six bandits, recover 40 sets of uniforms

“The EGM further observed that the rising insecurity in the state is becoming an added burden to the already-stretched healthcare facilities available in Enugu State and the safety of our patriotic doctors, who should care for the victims of these violent crimes, is no longer guaranteed which is very worrisome.

“The EGM, while noting the efforts and commitment of the state government in the area of security infrastructure, observed the gross inadequacy of the necessary security architecture and installations required to safeguard a vast and strategic state like Enugu State with its peculiarity as the capital of the old Eastern Region of Nigeria.

“The EGM finally observed, with condemnation and regrets, that the NMA is yet to receive any report from the relevant security agencies on full-scale conclusive investigations/inquiries into these kidnap cases and none of these enemies of the state have been brought to book yet,” it said.

The NMA members that attended the EGM, however, came out with seven resolutions to bring solutions to the negative and unprecedented development.

The statement reads: “First, the EGM strongly resolved to call on the Enugu State Government to, as a matter of urgency, ensure that all our public hospitals are well and heavily guarded by armed security personnel.

“The government should equally ensure the beefing up of the presence and operations of armed security patrol teams across the state.

“Secondly, the EGM unanimously resolved to request the State Government to, as a matter of utmost priority, rejig and totally revamp the current security architecture of the state.

“The rejigging should be done through adequate funding for security, installations of modern technologies and security gadgets among other innovative security measures that would speedily help bring this ugly situation to a halt.

“The EGM also resolved to call on all the security agencies in the state to live up to their biddings/obligations, scale up operations and ensure that the current trend is radically aborted and culprits brought to justice.”

It said that the EGM further resolved to mandate the management of the various health institutions in the state to either ensure that Medical/Dental consultants on hospital calls are provided with decent call rooms, meals and other facilities or in the alternative provide a to-and-fro Ambulance escort for them to be able to perform their duties.

According to the association, the EGM resolved to unequivocally charge all health institutions in the state to, as a matter of urgency, set up a Security Committee meeting, adopt and adapt the UNTH template currently being implemented while also factoring in their own peculiarities as the case may be.

“The EGM further resolved to officially communicate all relevant security agencies in the state on the need for better collaboration and synergy by embarking on security sensitization tours across the major health institutions in the state, while also ensuring that their operations and presence are well felt in these places.

“The EGM finally resolved to notify the State Government and all other relevant authorities in the State that the Association will closely monitor the trend and implementation of these resolutions.
