The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has warned that no fewer than 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, will experience flooding in 2026, with 14,118 communities identified as high-risk nationwide.

Utsev gave the warning in Abuja on Wednesday at the public presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook, AFO, by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA.

He said the high-risk communities were located in 266 local government areas based on scientific forecasts and hydrological assessments.

The affected states, according to him are Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna and Kano.

Others include Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara, including the FCT.

The minister said that 15,597 communities in 405 local government areas across 35 states would face moderate flood risk, while Ekiti remained the only state not affected.

He added that 923 communities in 77 local government areas across 24 states fell within the low flood risk category.

“States in this category include Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara,” he said.

He warned of possible flash and urban flooding in major cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kano.

He said coastal and riverine flooding was expected in Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and Ondo due to rising sea levels and tidal surges.

”The AFO is not just a scientific report; it is a call to action. Early warning saves lives and reduces economic losses,” he emphasised.

Utsev attributed increasing flood incidents to climate variability, rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage infrastructure and poor land-use practices.

He revealed that the federal government was strengthening hydrological monitoring through improved data systems, automated river gauges and advanced modelling techniques.

He added that collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, were being enhanced to improve forecast accuracy and early warning dissemination.

The minister urged state governments to integrate flood risk considerations into land-use planning, urban development and infrastructure design.

He also called for improved drainage systems, effective floodplain management and stronger community preparedness to minimise impacts.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said flooding remained a major national challenge, with recurring incidents recorded since 2012.

Tinubu said his administration had initiated policies and programmes, including flood control projects, to address the persistent threat.

He said that the 2024 Maiduguri flood marked a turning point toward proactive flood and disaster management.

According to him, the Anticipatory Action initiative, led by the Office of the Vice-President, is strengthening early warning, preparedness and coordinated response.

Tinubu described the AFO as a key planning document guiding early action, mitigation and evacuation strategies nationwide.

He urged stakeholders to utilise the forecasts to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure.

The president also emphasised the need to harness water resources to drive economic diversification and sustainable development.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NIHSA, Umar Mohammed, said the forecast was based on comprehensive, data-driven analysis of flood-prone areas.

Mohammed said the AFO served as an early warning tool to support planning and coordinated disaster response nationwide.

He added that the agency had upgraded its forecasting system to a hybrid AI-integrated model to improve accuracy and lead time.

He also said that the Flood Dashboard now enabled real-time monitoring and dissemination of alerts to stakeholders.

He urged residents in vulnerable areas to heed early warnings and adopt preventive measures to reduce risks.

The NIHSA director general called for wider dissemination of the outlook to strengthen preparedness and resilience in communities.

He appreciated the federal government and development partners for their support in the preparation of the 2026 outlook.

Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of the World Meteorological Organisation, NiMet, NEMA, the Minister of Livestock Development, Dr Idi Maiha, and other stakeholders.

There is a certain electricity in the air when a candidacy feels less like an imposition and more like a collective choice. The emergence of Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) as the APC governorship candidate carries that charge. It has not been greeted with the usual grumbling compliance, but has been met, in many quarters, with something closer to relief, even expectation.

The reaction to his emergence is not accidental. It is something rooted in memory. In places where yawning gaps in infrastructure make government a rumour or folklore, people remember who intervened tangibly. While representing Lagos West, Yayi built a reputation for not treating constituencies like abstract map points.

In Obawole, in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area where I live, he installed a 500KVA transformer in my CDA. He followed that up by tarring seven streets, complete with drainage. Five years on, those roads have held their shape with a dignity that shames many newer projects. In a country where roads do not last longer than lettuce, that kind of durability becomes a political argument.

Those seven roads are inner street affairs that are the responsibility of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area. The Chairman at the time, the now deceased and formidably useless Toba Oke, had his house in the vicinity in which the roads were built. He could not build them. Even the one on which his house stands remained under construction till his two terms ended. It was completed by his successor.

Multiply what Yayi did in my hood across communities that have felt his interventions and you begin to understand the groundswell. For many, this is not about the party platform, but about a man whose record suggests that he understands needs, especially of the very desperate variety. It is not certain that he will win the election, but he looks the out-and-out favourite.

For his candidacy to mean anything beyond comfort for those already touched, I think, it must become something harder, sharper and more consequential. The truth is that just beyond the pockets of progress lie whole belts of abandonment.

We have seen promise curdle into incompetence and self-described reformers turn arsonists, fanning the very neglect they swore to end. Those areas have had enough of that cycle.

You want to know? Akute, Lambe, Oke Aro, Agbado, Matogun, Osere, Maidan, Legun, Adiyan, Ijoko, Mowe, Ofada, Ibafo et al. These are not obscure hamlets, but dense, energetic and economically-alive corridors sitting on the Lagos boundary that have been condemned to exist as afterthoughts for 27 years of civil rule.

In these communities, there are no roads worth the name, no functional schools that can carry the weight of their swelling populations and no hospital worth the description. The nearest fire station to Lambe, for example, is 24 kilometres away. A few years ago, a tanker fire licked many buildings, including a Celestial Church parish on Matogun Road. Fire trucks could not have arrived timeously because the fire station is far away and because the surface of the moon is smoother than the road leading to the scene of the accident.

In these areas, neglect is not an abstract policy failure. It is a daily assault gleefully carried out by successive administrations, with the worst being that of Ibikunle Amosun. Businesses have been quietly strangled by inaccessibility. Those that survive do so on one leg, unable to expand, unable to employ and unable to breathe. Property values have collapsed, turning what should be family assets into liabilities. Health outcomes are worsening because distance and bad roads are often the difference between life and death. Beneath all of this is a more corrosive message that residents of those places do not matter.

Yayi’s emergence, for all the goodwill it has generated, must confront this history head-on, if he is elected. It cannot be another cycle of selective intervention, of islands of competence in a sea of disregard. The Lagos-Ogun boundary belt is asking for inclusion, not miracles. It has an agenda that suggests itself. It is clear and urgent.

First, roads. Not those ceremonial stretches built for social media. Those areas need a comprehensive grid that connects the communities internally and to economic hubs. They need roads that can carry commerce, not just okada and Keke NAPEP. Second, public services such as functional primary and secondary schools, properly equipped hospitals and fire stations positioned with intent.

Third, economic revival through support for small and medium enterprises and incentives that recognise the strategic location of these areas as spillover zones from Lagos. Fourth, planning. These communities have grown in spite of the state. They must now be integrated into a coherent urban vision that prevents chaos from becoming permanent. I should know. I lived in one for nine years and if you lived in one, you have lived in all.

Finally, dignity. Those areas need governance that signals, in policy and in presence, that the residents do not remain children of a lesser god. That is what they currently are.

The enthusiasm greeting Yayi today is a form of credit earned through past interventions. But credit, in politics, is perishable. It must be redeemed with a broader and bolder commitment, if and when he earns the mandate. He has shown he can fix streets. If he gets elected, he will be required to fix a pattern of exclusion that has endured for nearly three decades.

If he does, this moment of delight will harden into trust. If he does not, it will slip quietly into that long ledger of missed chances. There is reason for caution. Our history is crowded with false dawns. We have seen promise curdle into incompetence and self-described reformers turn arsonists, fanning the very neglect they swore to end. Those areas have had enough of that cycle.

The Police Command in Ogun has said that it has arrested 146 suspects, following intelligence-driven operations within Sagamu and its environs.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

He said the suspects were apprehended under a special raid termed “Operation Keep Sagamu Safe.”

Babaseyi noted that the operation was part of deliberate measures to prevent crime and address emerging security concerns within Sagamu and its environs.

According to him, the operation was carried out by operatives of the Sagamu Area Command, in collaboration with sister security agencies and community stakeholders.

He explained that the exercise followed strategic engagements with traditional authorities, the Sagamu Local Government Council and heads of security agencies, to strengthen collaborative security architecture.

The spokesperson said that the intelligence-led operation which was conducted in the early hours of April 13, targeted identified flashpoints where suspected criminal elements posed threats to public peace and safety.

“The operation was aimed at forestalling any breakdown of law and order and reinforcing public safety across Sagamu and adjoining communities,” he said.

Babaseyi noted that the exercise was jointly executed by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Amotekun Corps, Ogun State Community Security (So-Safe) Corps and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN.

He said the suspects were currently undergoing screening, to determine their levels of involvement in criminal activities.

“The suspects are currently undergoing screening to ascertain their individual levels of involvement in the reported criminal activities.

“Those found culpable will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Abeokuta, for discreet investigation and necessary legal action,” he said.

He said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism and operational discipline exhibited by participating agencies.

“Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and sustained efforts to ensure peace, safety and security across the state,” he said.

He consequently, urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to the command, through its emergency lines: 0800 000 9111, 0906 283 7609 and 0912 014 1706

The Police Command in Ogun has arrested two security guards over alleged murder of a traveller, simply identified as Promise, in Ibafo area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Abeokuta.

According to the statement, the detectives of the Ibafo Divisional Headquarters, Ogun Police Command, have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a traveller, (Promise) in Ibafo, Ogun State.

Babaseyi explained that the incident occurred on Thursday, April 10, at about 7.00 p.m., following a credible tip-off from a concerned citizen.

He added that the detectives promptly mobilised to the scene, rescued the victim, and rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

“While en route to the hospital, the victim identified himself and stated that he had been attacked and macheted by security guards after arriving in the area late the previous night.

“But, he was subsequently confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

“Following the confirmation of death, the body was properly documented and deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, for post-mortem examination.

“Preliminary investigation revealed a trail of blood linking the scene directly to one of the suspects, leading to his arrest,” he said.

Babaseyi said that sustained efforts resulted in the apprehension of the second suspect, as efforts were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices.

He stated that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for thorough investigation and prosecution.

Babaseyi quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ogun Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, as strongly condemning the act, and assured that all those involved will be brought to justice.

Ojajuni also warned against all forms of unlawful violence and reiterates the command’s zero tolerance for extrajudicial acts.

The CP advised members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the Ogun State Police Command through its emergency lines: Gateway Shield (Toll-Free): 0800 000 9111.

Other Emergency numbers are: 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369, and 0708 497 2994.

Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly referred to as Yayi, has been declared as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State for the 2027 election.

The announcement was made on Monday by the governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the APC Strategic Caucus Meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Iyana Mortuary, Abeokuta.

Abiodun who is the leader of the party in the state, said the decision was taken to present a formidable candidate and break the jinx of Ogun West Senatorial District not producing a governor since the creation of the state.

He explained that the caucus meeting was convened to secure the buy-in of major party stakeholders, disclosing that he had earlier met with other aspirants who agreed to support the party’s choice.

His words: “Today, those I considered as front-runners in Ogun West have given their consent and bought into the idea.

“The reason Ogun West has not been able to produce a governor until now is due to a lack of cooperation. I am proud to say that I have spoken to Hon. Biodun Akinlade, Hon. Gboyega Isiaka, and I can confirm that they are fully on board with having a single Ogun West candidate.

“Nothing will give me more joy than to break the 50-year-old jinx. Nothing will give me more joy than to fulfill the aspirations of my predecessors and ensure that Ogun West produces the next governor of Ogun State.

“On that note, permit me to unveil the person we have decided will be the next flag bearer of our great party in Ogun State—Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola.”

The governor said series of consultations were held with key stakeholders, including a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to arrive at an acceptable candidate to fly the party’s flag in the 2027 election.

“A lot of discussions have taken place behind the scenes, and these discussions did not just start a month or two ago. I must confess that they began about six months ago.

“The President called Chief Olusegun Osoba, who in turn reached out to me and a few others. He expressed satisfaction with what we are doing and indicated his interest in having a say in who would work with him in Ogun State in the next election,” he said.

Governor Abiodun added that after carefully assessing all aspirants who indicated interest in the governorship race, a candidate was selected based on competence, capacity, and the President’s understanding of each aspirant.

“He asked me which zone I preferred for the next governor to come from, and without hesitation, I said Ogun West. When he asked why, I told him it is the only senatorial district that has not produced a governor in the history of the state.

“I also told him that this position aligns with the aspirations of my predecessors. We may disagree on other issues, but on this, we are in agreement,” he said.

He noted that while all aspirants have their strengths, some possess stronger credentials than others, stressing that a governorship aspirant must also have the financial capacity to run an election rather than depend solely on external support.

He said the party had grown in leaps and bounds in the last seven years, as new members joined, making it the dominant party with little or no opposition.

The governor noted that though every member had the right to aspire, there was the need for the party members to align and streamline their thoughts on the forthcoming elections, cautioning going against the Electoral Act.

In his acceptance speech, Senator Adeola pledged to continue on the path of progress as bequeathed by past leaders, saying the state would experience more development as he was aware of the aspirations of the state’s founding fathers.

He noted the strategic importance of the state in the country, saying that with the support and cooperation of all, he would not let the party and the state down.

By AYO AROWOJOLU

As permutations ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship race continue to gather momentum, one name is increasingly refusing to stay on the margins: Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.

What at first appeared to some observers as a bold but uphill aspiration is gradually beginning to assume the shape of a serious political movement. For the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the signs are becoming harder to ignore: the atmosphere is shifting, the conversations are growing louder, and the pieces appear to be falling into place.

In less than two months since she threw her hat into the ring, the political temperature in the Gateway State has risen noticeably. Old assumptions are being tested. Previously dominant narratives are being unsettled. And some entrenched interests that may have once seen the race as a foregone conclusion are now being forced to take a second look.

With a steady stream of strategic appearances since February, a deliberate return to the public square, and now highly symbolic photo opportunities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many political watchers are beginning to accept a new reality: Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s governorship aspiration is no longer just a declaration — it is fast emerging as a serious factor in Ogun’s evolving 2027 contest.

Her political re-emergence has been anything but accidental.

After formally declaring her intention to contest the Ogun governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Professor of Epidemiology moved swiftly to redefine herself in the public consciousness — not merely as a former senator or the daughter of a former president, but as a tested administrator, seasoned intellectual, and a possible bridge between legacy politics and a fresh governance conversation in Ogun State.

At her declaration, she projected herself as a service-driven leader with a clear focus on inclusive development, women empowerment, infrastructure renewal and educational advancement. More importantly, she left no one in doubt about her seriousness, making it clear that she is not in the race to make up the numbers, but to win.

What appears to be adding a fresh layer of intrigue — and perhaps strategic advantage — is her visible alignment with the current national power structure.

In recent weeks, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has not hidden her support for President Tinubu’s reform agenda. At her declaration, she openly commended the President’s economic reforms and cited major national projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as evidence of long-term economic thinking. In political terms, that was no casual remark. It was a signal — and in some circles, a very loud one.

Given the historical complexities often associated with the Obasanjo-Tinubu axis, her posture has naturally attracted attention. But beyond words, optics matter in politics — and in Nigerian politics, they matter even more.

Her widely circulated photo moments with President Tinubu have sparked fresh conversations across Ogun’s political landscape. In a state where access, acceptability and alignment within the APC power matrix may prove decisive long before the primaries, such images are being interpreted by many as more than ceremonial courtesies. They project relevance. They suggest access. They hint at recognition.

And in a governorship race that may ultimately be decided as much by internal party arithmetic as by public sentiment, such symbolism can carry real political weight.

Yet, perhaps even more telling is the fact that her rising visibility is not limited to headlines and photo opportunities.

With unusual energy and renewed purpose, she has also been engaging structured political stakeholders almost on a daily basis. In one of the clearest indications that her campaign is moving beyond symbolic declaration to active groundwork, Senator Iyabo recently met with the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Ogun State, where she called for collaboration among political actors to reduce tension and curb electoral violence ahead of 2027.

During that engagement, she also rolled out a broader governance pitch centred on job creation through industrialisation and agriculture, digital skills development, healthcare delivery and education. It was a move that suggested a campaign trying to balance elite recognition with issue-based credibility.

Of particular significance was the disclosure by the IPAC Chairman, Mr. Abayomi Sanyaolu, that as of now, only three governorship aspirants had been formally recognised by the council — and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo was among them.

That is no small detail. In a crowded and fluid pre-primary environment where many aspirants are still testing the waters, visibility matters, recognition matters, and sustained engagement matters. In politics, perception often precedes momentum — and momentum, once established, can quickly become a force of its own.

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, after all, is no political novice.

She is a former senator who represented Ogun Central from 2007 to 2011, a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health, and an accomplished academic and epidemiologist with international credentials. That combination of political experience, technocratic depth and family pedigree gives her a distinct identity in the race — one that few, if any, of her rivals can easily replicate.

Her declaration has clearly moved beyond mere ambition. Her public endorsement of the Tinubu reform agenda has signalled both ideological and strategic positioning. Her consultations with principal stakeholders have added weight and seriousness to her aspiration. Her growing media visibility has revived her political relevance. And those carefully watched appearances with the President have only strengthened the perception that, on the ever-complex chessboard of Ogun 2027, things may indeed be adding up for her.

And so, for Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, this may well be a season of momentum.

She is no longer just another name in the race. She is rapidly becoming one of the defining stories of the Ogun governorship battle — and perhaps, one of its most closely watched contenders.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun Command, has confirmed the death of four persons in a lone accident in front of Christopher University on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, said that eight others sustained injuries.

Odunsi said the accident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGL 789 YL, which occurred at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to him, a total of 13 persons were involved in the accident, comprising 11 adult males and two adult females.

“Eight persons sustained injuries, including seven adult males and one adult female, while four adult males lost their lives in the crash,” he said.

Odunsi explained that preliminary investigation indicated that the accident was caused by a burst tyre and speed violation, which made the driver lose control of the vehicle.

He said that the FRSC rescue operatives from the Mowe Unit Command arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and carried out rescue operations.

The PRO added that the injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital for medical treatment, while bodies of the dead were deposited at the Idera morgue.

He said that the vehicle and belongings of the passengers recovered had been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division, MTD, of the Redeemed Police Station.

Odunsi said that the Ogun State Sector Commander, Mr Akinwunmi Fasakin, commiserated with the families of the deceased.

He urged motorists to obey speed limits and ensure their tyres were in good condition before embarking on any journey.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said his administration’s infrastructure development and economic reforms across sectors are for the benefit, well-being, and prosperity of citizens.

He gave the assurance on Saturday in Iperu, Ogun State, during the inauguration of the Gateway Cargo International Airport, built by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

President Tinubu also launched two new aircraft owned by the new Gateway Airline.

“Our investment is about our people. The infrastructure underscores our faith in our country, the belief that today’s foundation is for tomorrow’s prosperity. Thank you all for your understanding.”

President Tinubu said Governor Dapo Abiodun had continued to demonstrate his commitment to the well-being of Ogun State citizens and Nigerians at large.

The president said the inaugurated airport was connected to an independent power, reflecting the administration’s investment in energy.

“Development must touch every level. I am particularly pleased with the mobility, the security and the agricultural initiatives being fulfilled today”, President Tinubu added.

In addition to inaugurating the new airport, he launched 1,000 electric bikes, security vehicles, and tractors.

The president commended Nigerians for their continued faith in the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He said that the reforms initiated had translated to more resources for the sub-nationals.

He said he was proud of the state governors’ judicious utilisation of resources for development and commended Governor Abiodun for his visionary leadership and for aligning the state’s developmental initiatives with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

President Tinubu said the inauguration of 1000 electric bikes was a smart response by the state to modern transportation needs and that embracing technology rather than fossil fuel to improve daily life was the way forward.

President Tinubu also lauded the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for the various initiatives that he said had enhanced the ease of doing business and for prioritising the welfare of his workforce.

“Nigeria will continue to remember you. Your legacies, commitment and patriotism are well appreciated,” the president stated.

During the visit, the president launched the Customs Hub, which included barracks, a training college, a warehouse and a hospital.

Governor Abiodun thanked the president for the visit, highlighting it as historic and symbolic of the president’s commitment to national development and belief in sub-nationals as growth engines.

Governor Abiodun lauded the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he credited with placing Nigeria on a path of economic recovery, fiscal discipline, and sustainable growth.

The governor also commended the president for his bold economic reforms, noting that the unification of the foreign exchange rate, the removal of the fuel subsidy, and the repositioning of public finance to reflect market realities had gone a long way toward restoring investors’ confidence and attracting foreign direct investment.

“Your efforts in expanding revenue through improved tax administration, digitisation of government processes and strengthening of agencies have started to address long-standing structural weaknesses.

“Other landmark initiatives, amongst others, include the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Programme, the NELFUND, the ongoing Rail Modernisation, major highway reconstruction projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Badagry-Sokoto Highway and all reforms in the oil and gas sector aimed at boosting production and transparency, all point to a deliberate reset of our national economy”, the governor said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while commending the president’s democratic antecedents, said that the National Assembly remained a veritable tool for deepening democracy in Nigeria.

Akpabio maintained that without the parliament, there wouldn’t be democracy.

The Senate President thanked the president for several key reforms and ideas that he brought to fruition.

“President Tinubu was credited as the first to initiate Independent Power Plants in Lagos, a model that other states across Nigeria have since adopted.”

Akpabio appealed to the president to decentralise the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, for a more effective power system.

He lauded the president for his strong belief in the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, starting with significant growth in Lagos’ revenue and implementing reforms at the federal level to empower sub-nationals financially.

“This has enabled states to avoid borrowing for salaries and projects, leading to widespread appreciation from governors”, Akpabio said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on behalf of himself and the people of the state, thanked President Tinubu for his visionary and purposeful leadership and tenacity.

“When Ogun State was created 50 years ago, I was part of the process. Nobody at the time would have thought we would have what we have today. And it is due to what we have got from all the governors and those who have worked with all the governors,” the former president said.

Also at the event were the Ministers of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, Governor of the CBN, Olayemi Cardoso, as well as the governors of Borno, Niger, Taraba, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Bayelsa, and Ekiti states.

Traditional rulers from the state also attended the event.

No fewer than 30 students and a teacher of Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State were hospitalised on Wednesday, following exposure to a suspected chemical odour within the school premises.

It was gathered that the incident, which occurred shortly after the morning assembly, caused panic as several students reportedly began vomiting and fainting.

Speaking with newsmen, the vice principal of the school, Mrs Adeola Borogun, said the situation was not caused by a gas explosion but by a strange odour perceived in the environment.

She said the development prompted the school authorities to immediately seek medical assistance.

“Several students began vomiting and fainting, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode,” she said.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incident, dismissing speculation that it was an explosion in the school premises.

He noted that investigation was ongoing to find out the actual cause of the incident.

“No, there is no explosion anywhere.

“It’s a gas leakage from somewhere. Some say it was from the school laboratory, but some say it must have been from somewhere around the community.

“We are bringing a gas analyser there now to analyse the type of gas and the concentration zone. So, that will give us the exact cause,” Oresanya said.

He added that the 30 students brought to the hospital are now in stable condition

Meanwhile, the chairman of Ijebu Ode local government, Dare Alebiosu, who visited the hospital, described the situation as calm and under control.

He assured parents and residents that a full investigation would be carried out to uncover the cause of the incident.
