Two groups have submitted multiple applications to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, seeking registration of five associations as political parties, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The multiple applications were observed in the details of the 110 associations seeking registration, which was published by INEC on Wednesday on its websites and social media handles.

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had, earlier at the commission’s quarterly meeting with the media, disclosed that the commission received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking to be registered as political parties as at June 23.

He also promised that INEC would treat all requests fairly, irrespective of the status of their promoters.

However, it was observed that the details of the released document revealed that a particular group is seeking registration for three political parties, using the same individuals for protem chairman and protem secretary, same address and logo but with different acronyms in the logos.

The names of proposed political parties are: New Green Generation Coalition Party, NGGCP; New Green Congress, NGC, and New Green Coalition Party, NGCP, with the names of Malam Idris Abdulkarim submitted as the protem chairman and Amb. Crystal Ogu in the three applications.

Also observed on the list was the name of Evang. Atanda Bamidele as the protem chairman for two associations: Zuma Reform, ZR, and Zonal Rescue Movement, ZRM, with Udeze Azubuike also as secretary for both proposed parties.

It was also observed that about 58 associations did not provide at least one of the details, such as the proposed acronyms, logos, names of their protem chairmen, secretaries and addresses.

Those involved in these include: Great Alliance Party, GAP; Key of Freedom Party, KFP; Absolute Congress, ABC; Peoples Liberation Congress Party, PLCP; the Populist, Party P, and National Action Network, NAN.

Specifically the Far-Right Party, Republican Party of Nigeria, About All (Nigerian), Alliance Social Party, La Riba Multipurpose Cooperative Society and National Democratic Movement did not provide their acronyms.

Also in the same category were United National Youths Party of Nigeria, Young Motivation and Awareness for Development Forum, Republican Party of Nigeria and All Allies Alliance.

African Union Congress, AUC; About All (Nigerian); National Democratic Party (NDP); La Riba Multipurpose Cooperative Society; United National Youths Party of Nigeria; Democratic Union for Progress Sceptre Influence Party, SIP; The Populist and Peoples Liberation Congress Party, PLPC, were also in the category.

Other associations seeking registration included: Congress Action Party, CAP; Allied Conservative Congress, ACC; Citizens Party of Nigeria, CPN; Patriots Party, PP; Movement of the People, MOP; Socialist Equality Party, SEP, and Polling Unit Ambassadors of Nigeria, PUAN.

Village Intelligence Party, VIP; All Democratic Alliance, ADA, and Advanced Democratic Alliance, ADA, were equally among the groups seeking registration to become political parties.

The Officer-in-Charge, Port Health Services, PHS, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Dr Omede Ogu, said on Friday that proactive measures had been taken to prevent the new COVID-19 variant from slipping into the country.

Ogu gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos.

Recall that the United Kingdom detected its first case of the new COVID-19 variant, BA.2.86, on August 18, and said the strain had also been identified in Israel, Denmark and the US.

“There is currently one confirmed case in the UK in an individual with no recent travel history, which suggests a degree of community transmission within the UK,” the UK Health Security Agency had said.

Nigeria and the UK record a high volume of travellers who shuttle between both countries on regular basis.

Ogu said that information on the new variant had been placed on the Port Health Services Emergency Platform, while other agencies at the airport had also been informed about it.

“Our mandate is health safety and security at the point of entry and it covers both routine and emergency situations.

“The new variant has been placed on the Port Health services emergency platform and we have also informed sister agencies at the airport of its existence and they are also on the alert.

“The ambulances are in good condition and our clinics round the tarmac are in the perfect shape to review any form of emergency, and facilities are inspected daily.

READ ALSO: Military personnel killed in action laid to rest in Abuja

“Personnel are trained on a weekly basis and this training is called Weekly Pretentious Infection Training. The purpose of this training is to keep our personnel abreast of steps to take when confronted with emergencies like this.

“Our personnel are on ground and our structures are constantly reviewed, so we assure everyone that there is absolutely nothing to be worried about,” he said.

Ogu said that the Port Health Service collaborated with Emergency Operation Centres, EOCs, across the country involving stakeholders who deliberate on different strategies and containment mechanisms for emergencies.

He said that there were cameras at the tarmac that captured the body temperature of passengers when they alighted from the plane.

“For every passenger arriving at the airport, the first point of call is the port health services, and they are screened to check for irregularities in body temperature.

“The instruments are categorised into three: the hand held thermometer, a tripod tarmac scanner and the distant tarmac camera,” he said.

According to him, the distant tarmac camera is the most effective because it captures everyone and all the health information, and port health officials see the result on the screen.

“We intend to get more cameras in the nearest future for more effective coverage and optimal reporting,” he said.

He urged Nigerians not to panic, noting that the new variant was still at the observatory level.

Gunmen on Friday evening, abducted another Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Mathias Opara, in Imo.

It was gathered that Opara was abducted along Ejemekwuru and Ogbaku Road between Oguta and Mbaitoli local government areas of the state.

An eyewitness said that the priest was kidnapped while returning from a burial ceremony of a colleague’s father at Izombe community in Oguta local government area.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the priest was double-crossed and kidnapped along with some people in the same vehicle while driving back to Owerri.

“The incident happened right before us. We were also coming back to Owerri from the funeral ceremony when the incident occurred,” the source said.

When contacted for confirmation, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, could not confirm the report.

Okoye simply said “I am yet to receive an official report in line with that.”

However, the Director of Public Communications of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Raymond Ogu, who confirmed the incident, said the priest was ambushed and later kidnapped.

“It was on his way back from Izombe. These guys came out from the bush and ambushed them.

“They were about five people in the vehicle, including the priest, but one small boy among them in the vehicle escaped during the ambush.

“The hoodlums took the priest and the other three passengers away but at some point, they released the other three to take his car but they went away with the priest into the bush,” Ogu said.

Opara’s abduction came barely a week after gunmen kidnapped the Priest of Christ the King Parish, Ezinachi/Ugwuago of the Diocese of Okigwe in Okigwe Local Government Area, Rev. Fr. Jude Maduka.

It would be recalled that Maduka was kidnapped while preparing for the Eucharistic Mass celebration at his adoration ground.

A Catholic Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Parish, Osu, in Isiala Mbano local government area, Rev. Fr. Michael Asumogha, in Okigwe Catholic diocese was equally kidnapped in April and later released.
