Mr Afolabi Odunsi, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Public Education Officer in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta.

Odunsi said the crash occurred on Monday at about 12:03 a.m. and involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.

According to him, nine males were involved in the accident.

“Sadly, seven persons were killed, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Odunsi said.

He attributed the cause of the fatal crash to excessive speed, adding that further investigations were ongoing.

He noted that operatives of the FRSC Ibafo Outpost Command received a distress call at about 12:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene five minutes after, at 12:09 a.m.

Odunsi said the bodies of the deceased had been evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance Service to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, OOUTH, while the injured were taken to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

He added that the affected vehicles had been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division, MTD, of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo.

Meanwhile, the Sector Commander, Mr Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly articulated vehicle drivers, to avoid excessive speed and maintain safe following distances.

Ogunjobi also advised motorists to remain vigilant and exercise extra caution when driving at night, noting that reduced visibility and fatigue could increase the risk of crashes.

“Motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, should avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant at all times,” he said.

He, however, commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

This is contained in a statement issued by the FRSC Sector Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, on Monday in Abeokuta.

The accident, he said, occurred at about 8:05 p.m. near Sapade Bridge in Remo North local government area of Ogun.

“The crash involved a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) truck bearing a Dangote inscription but no registration number and a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with Lagos registration number EKY 290 YM.

“The Toyota Hiace bus, which was conveying 18 passengers, collided with the truck after the truck driver allegedly reversed on the highway when he missed his route.”

The corps said preliminary investigations indicated that the crash resulted from speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.

Odunsi said the deceased comprised nine adult males and one male child, while the injured included four adult males and two females.

He added that two other adult males escaped unhurt.

The FRSC spokesman said rescue operatives evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the remains of the deceased had been deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

He added that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, had taken custody of the vehicles, while arrangements had been made for their evacuation.

The Ogun Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, as condoling with the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Ogunjobi warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, against reversing on highways, excessive speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations.

He urged road users to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes to prevent avoidable road crashes.

It said that ten others sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred on the second day of the public holidays declared to mark the Eid-el-Kabir.

The FRSC spokesperson, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, said in Ota that the accident happened at about 11.12 a.m.

Odunsi explained that the lone accident involved one white Mazda E2000 bus with registration number KRD 809XC and 20 people comprising six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.

According to him, the five persons who died in the accident comprise one adult male, two adult females, a male child, and one female child.

He said that the persons that sustained varying degrees of injuries were being treated in hospitals, while five others escaped unhurt.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the probable causes of the crash were speeding and overloading, as the road was paved and weather condition at the time of the incident was cloudy.

“The corpses of victims were taken to General Hospital, in Ifo, while some survivors are receiving treatment at the same hospital and General Oreofe Specialist Hospital, Itori,” he said.

He said that the accident victims were rescued by FRSC Itori Unit Command in Ogun.

Odunsi quoted Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, of the Ogun Sector, as sympathising with the families of the victims.

According to him, Ogunjobi admonished motorists to avoid speeding, overloading and all forms of traffic violations capable of endangering lives.

He said that Ogunjobi also advised drivers to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations, especially during the festive period, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, said that eight others sustained injuries.

Odunsi said the accident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number AGL 789 YL, which occurred at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

According to him, a total of 13 persons were involved in the accident, comprising 11 adult males and two adult females.

“Eight persons sustained injuries, including seven adult males and one adult female, while four adult males lost their lives in the crash,” he said.

Odunsi explained that preliminary investigation indicated that the accident was caused by a burst tyre and speed violation, which made the driver lose control of the vehicle.

He said that the FRSC rescue operatives from the Mowe Unit Command arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and carried out rescue operations.

The PRO added that the injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital for medical treatment, while bodies of the dead were deposited at the Idera morgue.

He said that the vehicle and belongings of the passengers recovered had been handed over to the Motor Traffic Division, MTD, of the Redeemed Police Station.

Odunsi said that the Ogun State Sector Commander, Mr Akinwunmi Fasakin, commiserated with the families of the deceased.

He urged motorists to obey speed limits and ensure their tyres were in good condition before embarking on any journey.

It was gathered that two people died in the accident while Joshua sustained injuries.

It was also gathered that the vehicle conveying Joshua, an Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck.

Mr Afolabi Odunsi, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta on Monday.

Odunsi explained that the incident occurred at 12 p.m. involving two vehicles, adding that the Sagamu unit of the FRSC rescue team was at the scene as soon as they were informed.

The FRSC spokesperson attributed the accident to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking, explaining that the driver overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle.

“Five people were involved; one injured, two were unhurt while two were killed in the crash.

“However it was discovered that Anthony Joshua (international boxer) was involved but he only sustained injury, and was taken to an undisclosed hospital by the security officers attached to him.

“The bodies of the two killed have since been taken to the morgue and obstructions have been cleared,” he said.

The Ogun Police Command also confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, DSP, Oluseyi Babaseyi.

Babaseyi explained that the deceased had been deposited at Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the arrest on Thursday said that the police have been on his trail for the last six months.

Hundeyin said that operatives of the Ijora Badia Division have embarked on actionable intelligence gathering about the activities of the suspected 18-year old Olawale Odunsi before his arrest.

He said that the suspect had allegedly been involved in many traffic robberies at Iganmu and Ijora Under Bridge areas and environs.

“Many victims of the suspect described him as a deadly attacker with his dreadlocks.

“His gang members escaped from the scene. The suspect was taken to the station, where he confessed to the crime. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
