The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, on Thursday apologized to Governor Godwin Obaseki and asked for his forgiveness if he had offended him unknowingly to enable them finish well and strong.

Shaibu has been at loggerhead with Governor Obaseki over his ambition to contest the forthcoming 2024 governorship election.

The governor has relocated his deputy to another office outside the Government House while his media crew has been disbanded.

Shaibu made the apology while speaking to newsmen shortly after his investiture as the grand patron of the Catholic Men’s Organisation, CMO, of the Catholic Archdioceses of Benin.

“Like I have always said, I am a loyal servant and there is nothing that has changed. I took a vow to support my governor and that is what I will do. As you can see the Catholic people are here.

“I can only wish that the relationship we had is sustained. I prayed and know that in the next few weeks it will come back.

“I am missing my governor and I prayed that God will touch my governor’s heart and the heart of those that are trying to come in between us to know that I mean well.

READ ALSO: Tinubu to UN: Stop advocacy against steps to reform our economy

“If there is any mistake I have made, I am just human and did not act out of wickedness because I am not wicked and I have a clean heart,” he said.

Shaibu called on the governor to forgive him so as to develop the state together with him.

“I used this medium to appeal to Mr Governor that if there is any mistake I have made or if there was anything wrong that I have done that I do not know of, he should please forgive me so that we can develop our state together.

“So, Mr. governor if there is anything wrong you feel I have done please, I am sorry, and I need us to work together to finish well and strong because that is my prayer for you,” he added.

He disclosed that he had resumed in his new office as directed by the governor.

Earlier, the Catholic Men’s Organization of Nigeria, CMO, of the Archdiocese of Benin City said they came to honour Shaibu as the Grand Patron of the organisation.

The President of the Archdiocese of Benin CMO, Barr. Austin Odigie, said the decision to honour him was as a result of his commitment to God’s work in the church.

Odigie said “the Catholic Men’s Organization of the Archdiocese of Benin came to inform you that the Men in church have come to honour you as our Grand Patron.

“We have seen your commitment to all activities in the church. You have brought yourself low to the level of all of us in the church.

“You are the only deputy governor who served mass during father’s day celebration. No other deputy governor has been captured serving mass,” he said.

According to him, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Benin, Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, will personally invest you on September 24 during the first mass.

Responding, Shaibu thanked the CMO for the honour, adding that he would continue to serve God who has been merciful to him and his family.

According to Shaibu, “l live my life in God, everything about me is God. When you remember that the life you have does not belong to you, you have no reason not to serve God.”

Bendel Insurance Football Club on Sunday drew 1-1 with hosts Plateau United FC at the new Jos Stadium to maintain their unbeaten run in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.

The home side took the lead in the 42nd minute when Izuchukwu Chimezie capitalised on a defensive error by Bendel Insurance defender Benjamin Tanimu.

But Deputy Echeta drew Bendel Insurance level in the 80th minute during a goalmouth scrabble in the Group A Match Day 12 fixture.

Head Coach of Bendel Insurance, Monday Odigie, later said his team, which was with the best record so far in the league, learnt from every game.

“This helps us to correct our mistakes and keep fighting,” he said.

Odigie described the encounter as top-class, pointing out that Plateau United recently played in the continent and were still a very good side.

The head coach said that even though his side was new in the NPFL, it was doing everything possible to leave a mark wherever they went.

“For every team we play, we give our best. We are not under any pressure, and we are just doing our thing our own way,” he added.

Plateau United’s Head Coach, Maurice Longmiap, said the result was frustrating for them.

“Having lost away, we came back home with the hope of picking the maximum points, only to now draw with Bendel Insurance.”

Longmiap however said they would go back to the drawing board, reassess themselves and ensure they got it right in the next match.

He described Insurance as a good side with quality attack-minded players.

Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin on Sunday forced hosts Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, of Ibadan to a 2-2 draw in the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.

3SC however had to rely on a dramatic comeback to earn the draw in this Group A Match Day 7 fixture.

It was a great match for the visitors who went ahead with two goals after 36 minutes into the game.

Osarenkhoe Imade scored in less than a minute into the game, while Ismaeel Sarki scored in the 36th minute of the game.

The Oluyole Warriors fought back with a 42nd minute goal through Taofeek Malomo to reduce the tally.

Ifeoluwa Opeoluwa’s 64th minute goal then drew them level to save 3SC from recording a home loss.

The tension-soaked match was not without some officiating errors which spectators and football-loving fans complained against bitterly.

Gbenga Ogunbote, the coach of 3SC, said the result of the game was unfortunate in spite of their efforts and strategy to win the game.

“We wanted to win the game. We strategised to get a positive result. Unfortunately it wasn’t good enough to be called a positive result,” he said.

Ogunbote added that they would however continue to review their games and improve where necessary.

He said that the team would give their best in the next away game against Enyimba International FC of Aba.

The coach said he was hopeful that with the right attitude they would come back with a positive result.

Monday Odigie, the coach of Bendel Insurance, on his part thanked God that his players were able to up their game to resist the forays of the 3SC players.

He said that any team playing against 3SC should be ready to be stretched to the limits, because the team had experienced players.

“We are trying to play every game one after the other and trying to give our best.

“These teams have been in NPFL before now and they are household names. We are very cautious when we play against them.

“But I thank God for this result. We will just try to correct our mistakes after every match defensively, offensively and generally,” the coach said.

Odigie said the two goals scored by 3SC as they rallied back were due to a loss of concentration by his players.

He said that the players were a little careless in terms of tackles, adding that that was why they lost concentration.

“Football is a game of mistakes and chances. We just have to do the best we can to justify our being in the NPFL,” the coach said.
