On December 1, 2025, NNPC E&P Limited, NEPL, the flagship upstream subsidiary of NNPC Limited, achieved a record production level of 355,000 barrels of oil per day, its highest daily output since 1989.

This was made known on Tuesday by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd., Andy Odeh, in Abuja.

He said the milestone marked a significant step forward for Nigeria’s upstream sector and reflected the company’s ongoing transformation anchored on efficiency and discipline.

The figures, according to him, showed genuine transformation: average daily production surged 52%, rising from 203,000 barrels per day in 2023 to 312,000 in 2025.

“This record growth is no coincidence; it stems from a clear strategy anchored on operational excellence, strong asset management, and structured field development. “NEPL’s performance demonstrates that with the right leadership, strengthened systems, and a committed workforce, Nigeria’s upstream sector can overcome years of instability.”

The spokesman said the achievement converted national ambition into measurable momentum.

The presidential targets of 2 million barrels per day by 2027 and 3 million by 2030, he said, had often appeared aspirational.

NEPL’s delivery brings them closer to reality.

Speaking on the development, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, the Group CEO of NNPC Limited pointed out that the milestone was proof that Nigeria’s energy revival was not a dream; it was already happening.

“By showing its ability to exceed its own production benchmarks, NEPL confirms that the essential building blocks for scaling national output are being firmly established. The achievement signals that the machinery of production—equipment, processes, capabilities, and partnerships—can be driven with commercial discipline to produce real and positive outcomes,” Ojulari stated.

He noted that the achievement reinforced confidence nationally and across the global energy landscape, assuring partners and investors that Nigeria was committed to reaffirming its role as a dependable energy supplier.

Also speaking, Udy Ntia, the Executive Vice President, Upstream, observed that the milestone went beyond the 355,000 bpd figure.

“In a sector where shortcuts can yield short-term wins but long-term damage, NEPL is making a different point: sustainable progress must rest on responsible operations. This ensures that scaling production does not compromise worker safety, community wellbeing, or environmental protection. It reinforces a shift away from extraction at any cost towards sustainable value creation—a core requirement for any modern energy company seeking global relevance,” Ntia added.

Nicolas Foucart, MD, NEPL also noted that NEPL’s record-setting performance mirrors the broader transformation unfolding across NNPC Limited.

“This is a story shaped by leadership that charts a clear course; by partnerships built on alignment and accountability; and by a workforce whose hard work is turning goals into measurable progress. Our people, our processes, and principles are the real engines behind this success. We are building for tomorrow, not just celebrating today,” Foucart stated.

He added: “For Nigerians, this accomplishment means far more than increased barrels; it translates into greater national revenue, stronger energy security, and a more resilient economic foundation. NEPL has not only produced more hydrocarbons; it has reignited belief in what Nigeria’s energy sector can achieve with the right systems, culture, and dedication.”

NNPC E&P Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas resources.

This year’s contest centred on the theme “Artificial Intelligence (AI): Innovating the Future.” The quiz was open to students in S.S. 1 and S.S. 2 across secondary schools in Rivers State.

Government Secondary School Oyigbo triumphed over six other finalists in the grand finale.

The remaining finalists were Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori (4th place); Community Secondary School Oroworukwo (5th place); Community Secondary School Ogbogbo, Okrika (6th place); and Enitonna High School Borikiri, Port Harcourt, (7th place).

From healthcare professionals using AI for precise diagnoses and treatments to students, utilising AI-powered tools for their studies, technology is enhancing our lives in countless ways. The train of progress has left the station, and we must catch up quickly if we want to be significant players in the future.”

Addressing NLNG’s commitment to education, Mr. Odeh stated, “We are proud of initiatives like the NLNG University Support Programme, where we constructed, renovated, and equipped engineering laboratories in six universities across Nigeria’s geo-political zones. We have also supported infrastructural development in host communities, renovating schools, and equipping libraries and science laboratories. Our scholarship programmes —Post-Primary, Undergraduate, and Post-Graduate —continue to support students, particularly in our host communities in Rivers State.”

Dr Peters Nwagor, the chairman of the Rivers State Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), stressed that the quiz has consciously and significantly promoted critical thinking and knowledge, problem solving skill, the development of time management and pressure handling skills, and interdependent and interdisciplinary connection among the students.

He added that the quiz had also fostered teamwork, collaboration and healthy competition among the students.

The competition was organised by Dragnet Solutions Limited in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education and the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State Chapter.

Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG, has described as a misrepresentation of an out of court settlement, media reports indicating that a Tax Appeal Tribunal ordered NLNG to pay $27.5 million to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as a revised Company Income Tax (CIT) settlement for 2016.

NLNG made the denial of the claim in a statement by its General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh.

NLNG explained that its payment was made in furtherance of a settlement agreement reached between the parties and not because of any order made by the tribunal.

The statement by NLNG reads in full:

“Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has noted media reports suggesting that a Tax Appeal Tribunal ordered NLNG to pay $27.5 million to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as a revised Company Income Tax (CIT) settlement for 2016.

READ ALSO: FG, organised labour agree on N70,000 minimum wage

“NLNG clarifies that these reports misrepresent an out-of-court settlement that was reached amicably between the parties, without prejudice to their respective legal positions, which the Tribunal merely adopted as Consent Judgment in the appeal. The payment by NLNG was thus made in furtherance of a settlement agreement reached between the parties and not because of any order made by the Tribunal.

“NLNG remains a responsible corporate citizen, and consistently operates in compliance with Nigerian laws and will continue to operate in line with its vision of being ‘a globally competitive LNG company helping to build a better Nigeria.’”

The Nigeria LNG Limited has debunked the report of an alleged total shutdown of its six-train plant over a proposed maintenance operation scheduled for February or March 2024.

The denial was made in a statement issued by its General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, on Sunday.

According to him, the report was untrue.

He stated that the company’s commitment to the safe and uninterrupted functioning of its plant underscored the significance of routine turnaround maintenance, referred to technically as a “Shutdown.”

READ ALSO: Kogi guber: INEC declares APC’s Usman Ododo winner

He said contrary to the report’s assertions, a routine turnaround maintenance, while temporarily taking a specific train or unit offline for maintenance purposes, did not entail a complete shutdown of the entire plant.

“The meticulous planning and execution of this essential activity allows for the seamless transfer of production loads to unaffected trains, resulting in minimal impact on overall production,” he said.

He added that the “shutdown” alluded to in the report was a routine turnaround maintenance and was part of NLNG’s production calendar.

The statement reads further: “NLNG takes exception to the disconcerting lack of factual accuracy in the report, highlighting the evident absence of discretion. The company emphasises its track record of global achievements during turnaround maintenance, consistently setting high standards in safety and project management to ensure the continued operational efficiency of its assets. A classic example of NLNG’s achievements is the deployment of the Add-On Gate Valve (AOGV) technology in 2022 which involved the replacement of a critical valve while the plant remained online and active. NLNG plant was the first in Africa to implement this technology and its 36” line was the largest pipe size across the globe that the AOGV has ever been deployed on. It is this kind of engineering excellence and unparalleled maintenance execution discipline that NLNG is known for.

“The report was not fact-based and was deprived of any balance, in contradiction to the ethics of responsible journalism, as no spokesperson of the Company was reached for comments.

“In light of these discrepancies, NLNG urges for accuracy in conveying the nuanced details of the energy industry.”

NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited, NSML, has launched its Clean Waterways Initiative, a programme to raise awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution and to advocate for action to address the issue.

Speaking on the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of NSML, Mr Abdulkadir Ahmed, highlighted the urgency of the plastic crisis and its detrimental effects on economic activities, human health, and the environment.

“Our Waterways, and by extension the world’s oceans, are in the depths of a plastic crisis. Plastics and marine pollution have found their way into every marine ecosystem, impacting economic activities and the health of our people and the environment.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: A note for miracle mongers, By Olugbenga Osinaike

“We all have a role to play in protecting our oceans. The NSML Clean Waterways Initiative is our way of contributing to the global effort to tackle plastic pollution. We urge everyone to join us in this important work,” Mr Ahmed said.

Also speaking on the initiative, Nigeria LNG Limited’s, NLNG’s, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, said that the clean water initiative was a universal cause, given the importance of water to human existence.

The launch of the Clean Waterways Initiative comes at a time when the world is facing a growing plastic pollution crisis.

According to the United Nations, over eight million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year, and scientists warn that by 2050, there will be more plastic (by weight) than fish in the sea.

The NSML Clean Waterways Initiative is a call to action for all stakeholders to address this urgent problem.

It adopts a “TRIPLE A” Awareness, Advocacy, and Action strategy. It seeks to raise public awareness, educate stakeholders, and drive policy changes and solutions at the sub-national and national levels.

The initiative will focus on clean-up efforts, improving waste management, and promoting recycling practices to reduce the inflow of plastics and waste into our rivers and waterways.

The launch of the Clean Waterways Initiative was attended by stakeholders in the industry.

The NSML Clean Waterways Initiative is a significant step forward in the fight against plastic pollution.

NSML is a subsidiary of NLNG.

The private limited liability company provides shipping and maritime services which include training, manning, fleet management and consultancy services.
