										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Chief Superintendent of Corrections, CSC, Olukemi Ibikunle, of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has emerged winner of the 2025 United Nations Trailblazer Award for Women Justice and Corrections Officers.</p>
<p>Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, presented the award during a ceremony held at the UN Headquarters in New York.</p>
<p>A statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, SPRO, Abubakar Umar, on Wednesday in Abuja stated that the award was conferred by the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, UNDPO.</p>
<p>Umar said that the award recognised her outstanding contributions to corrections reform, inmate rehabilitation and the promotion of human rights within custodial environments.</p>
<p>He said that the UN Trailblazer Award celebrated women professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and commitment to justice and correctional excellence across the globe.</p>

<p>According to him, Ibikunle’s selection followed a rigorous international vetting process that highlighted her professional distinction, integrity and passion for humanitarian service.</p>
<p>“Out of five nominees selected globally, two were officers of the NCoS which is CSC Olukemi Ibikunle, nominated for her work with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO.</p>
<p>“The second officer is Sarah Adole, nominated for her service under MINUSCO.</p>
<p>“CSC Ibikunle emerged the overall winner, earning international recognition for her inspiring work in corrections, inmate rehabilitation and gender inclusion,” he said.</p>
<p>Reacting to the development, the Controller General, NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, congratulated CSC Ibikunle for bringing pride and honour to the Service and the nation.</p>
<p>Nwakuche described her recognition as “a testament to the professionalism, competence and global relevance of NCoS officers.”</p>
<p>He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to excellence, gender equity and global best practices.</p>
<p>Nwakuche further stated that the award underscored the growing confidence of international institutions in the Service’s capacity to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and correctional development on the global stage.</p>
<p>He encouraged other officers to emulate the award winner’s dedication, discipline and professionalism, noting that her achievement reflected the new spirit of the Service.</p>
<p>This, he said, was a Service driven by reform, human dignity and positive transformation.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has commenced a manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ilesa, Osun, following damage to the facility’s perimeter wall caused by heavy rainfall.</p>
<p>In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the Service’s spokesman, Abubakar Umar, said the NCoS Controller General, Sylvester Nwakuche, had ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.</p>
<p>Umar said that the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday and led to a breach in the prison’s security infrastructure.</p>

<p>He added that the Service was collaborating with other security agencies and community leaders in a bid to recapture the fleeing inmates.</p>
<p>“The NCoS is committed to ensuring the escapees are returned to lawful custody. We are also working to reinforce the facility’s security to prevent further occurrences,” he said.</p>
<p>Umar urged members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the recapture efforts.</p>
<p>He listed the NCoS Response Desk lines as 07087086005, 09060004598 and 08075050006, and encouraged anyone with useful tips to reach out or contact the nearest security agency.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Sylvester Nwakuche as the Acting Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS.</p>
<p>The approval followed the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Controller-General, Haliru Nababa.</p>
<p>The appointment is contained in a statement by Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary to the Civil Defence, Immigration, Fire Service and Correctional Service Board, CDCFIB, on Friday in Abuja.</p>
<p>According to Ahmed, the appointment will take effect from Sunday.</p>
<p>Ahmed said that Nwakuche’s appointment was a testament to his wealth of experience and dedication to the Service.</p>
<p>He said Tinubu charged Nwakuche to bring his wealth of experience to bear in his new capacity and ensuring the continued transformation of the service.</p>
<p>Nwakuche, who hails from Oguta in Imo State, was born on November 26, 1966.</p>
<p>He is expected to build on the achievements of his predecessor, while introducing new initiatives to further advance the mandate of the NCoS.</p>
<p>Until his appointment, Nwakuche was the Deputy Controller General, DCG, in charge of Training and Staff Development Directorate, where he played crucial role in shaping the training and development policies of the Service.</p>
<p>A fellow of the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Nwakuche is a highly decorated officer, holding the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic, MFR.</p>
