A collapsed overhead water storage tank has crushed a 34 year-old lady, Joy Amadi, to death in Benin.

A News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident, reports that the family of the deceased, has been plunged into grief.

The deceased was said to have been in her room when the tank erected in a neighbour’s new building, collapsed, penetrating the roofing sheet and crushing her to death.

The incident, it was learnt, occurred on August 4 on Enagbare Street, off Lucky Street in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State.

The collapsed overhead tank

In an interview on Friday, Mrs Beatrice Amadi, the deceased mother, said her daughter was inside helping her to shell melon when the tragedy struck.

The deceased, who was a teacher at a private school in the area, the mother said, did not go to work because she had free periods throughout the day.

She described Joy as kind, humble and hardworking person, who helped the family to pay their house rent.

Mrs Amadi said the death of her daughter was devastating and had left a vacuum in the family, which would be difficult to fill.

“Since Joy grew up, I have neither swept this house nor washed my clothes. She did everything and even helped to pay our house rent.

“I will wish a lot about her. It will be difficult to live without my daughter,” the obviously grieved mother told NAN.

The deceased father, Mr Michael Amadi, said he was at work when he received a distressed call.

“When I returned home, I met people gathered at my residence where the sad news was broken to me.”

Meanwhile, sources, who spoke with NAN blamed the incident on a shoddy job by the engineer handling the project.

The sources said the neighbour’s new house belonged to somebody who lived abroad.

“You know our people now, perhaps because the owner is not around, the engineer carried out a shoddy job.

“Unfortunately, the thing left the compound to kill the lady in the next house,” one of the sources said.

However, Mr Amadi said the site engineer had been arrested by the police while the corpse of her daughter had been deposited at an undisclosed morgue.

The deceased family hails from Affa in Udi local government area of Enugu State.

When contacted, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, Public Relations Officer of the Edo Police Command said he was yet to be briefed.

The Edo Police Command on Monday placed a N5 million reward for information that would lead to the arrest of one Rachael Eboni Osazee Iyonmana, Canada-based Nigerian lady, over allegations of cyber bullying/stalking, defamation and impersonation.

Addressing newsmen in Benin, the command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said the police had in January declared the suspect wanted in its Special Police Gazette Bulletin.

“On January 11, the Commissioner of Police received a petition from the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, over alleged offence of cyber bullying/stalking and defamation of character, against one Rachael Eboni Osazee Iyonmana,” he said.

The police spokesman said the command had written a letter to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Force CID Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, but while the police was on her trail to effect the arrest, intelligence revealed that the suspect was in Canada.

Nwabuzor said the suspect opened multiple Facebook accounts, using the petitioner’s photographs and full name on the Facebook, and used demeaning, derogatory languages to defame the petitioner’s personality.

“The suspect used the internet to bully and even defame his character.

“On the February 13, investigation revealed that after she was declared wanted, the suspect who is based in Canada, also went out of her way and created different Facebook accounts, using the complainant’s picture and continuing transmitting messages as if the complainant is the one transmitting them.

“We want to make the public aware that those Facebook accounts created by Rachael (suspect) were not the handiwork of the complainant.

“The suspect did that to make people believe that Festus is the one doing it.

“From investigation, Rachael is based in Canada, therefore, anybody with the information to her presence in Nigeria, should inform the police and the information would be entertained by the office of the Commissioner of Police, PPRO and Anti-kidnapping and cyber crime unit and the informant would be rewarded with N5 million,” said the PPRO.

He noted, however, that the Nigeria Police had also synergised with the Nigeria Immigration Service, with a view of arresting the suspect any time in Nigeria.

Edo Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, on Sunday said the suspects of Igueben train attack and abduction appeared in court for the extension of exparte order.

Nwabuzor’s reaction in Benin, followed speculations and reports that the court had commenced trial of the suspects.

According to Nwabuzor, “Exparte Order is an order of court that enables the Police investigators to extend the detention of a suspect(s) for a period of 14 days to enable them to meet with exigencies.

On January 7, gunmen attacked and kidnapped unspecified passengers at Igueben train station who were waiting to board a train to Warri.

According to a copy of pleadings signed by Barr. I. E. Ekibade on behalf of the legal section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, eight suspects are in police custody.

The suspects, all males, conspired within themselves to “commit felony by wit.”

The eight suspects are; Ighoko Mustapher Odion; Okojie Dominic Ewa; Ojie Patrick; Friday Ighedujiemu; Chief Ibadin Hamilton; Halilu Umaru; Aminu Ibrahim and Isah Aliyu.

The state Commissioner of Police who is the complainant in the case, filed and prayed the court to serve justice to the eight suspects because they had committed an offence punishable under the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law of the state.

The document revealed that Odion, 62; Ewa, 58; Patrick, 42; Ighedujiemu, 51; Hamilton, 59; Umaru, 28; Ibrahim, 25, and Aliyu, 25, conspired to kidnap the victims with the expectation of getting N20 million from their relatives as ransom for their freedom.

The two count-charge against the suspects contravened Section 5 and punishable under Section 2 (1) (2) of the Kidnapping Prohibition (Amendment) Law of Edo State, 2013.
