The Chairman, Geometric Power Limited and former Nigerian Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji, will be a Special Guest of Honour at the forthcoming SUPERNEWS conference and 10th anniversary scheduled for July 7, 2026.

The conference, with the theme: ‘Local Content & Digitisation: Building Synergy Between Oil & Gas and Insurance Sectors for Inclusive Growth’ will be held at Oriental Hotel, 3, Lekki Road, Victoria Island, Lagos at 10.00 a.m. prompt.

The Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin has confirmed his attendance at the conference which will bring together other regulators, key stakeholders in the oil and gas and insurance sectors, civil society organisations, media and students, among others.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Universal Insurance Plc, Dr. Jeff Duru, will chair the conference while the Group Managing Director/CEO, Royal Exchange Plc, Mrs. Idu Okeahialam, will deliver the keynote paper.

The Publisher, SUPERNEWS Nigeria, Ngozi Onyeakusi, said the choice of this year’s theme was borne out of the quest to provide insight on how the two sectors, insurance and oil and gas, can leverage cutting-edge technologies to boost collaboration and synergy towards surmounting challenges associated in implementing the Provisions of Sections 49 and 50 of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development, NOGICD, Act.

For instance, provisions of Sections 49 and 50 of the NOGICD Act requires all operators engaged in any form of activity or project in the oil and gas industry to insure all insurable risks related to its oil and gas business with an insurance company, through an insurance broker registered in Nigeria.

The NOGICD Act also provides that where an operator seeks to place an insurable risk offshore, a written approval of the National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, must first be sought and obtained and that NAICOM, prior to the issuance of the approval, must first determine that local capacity has been fully exhausted.

In a bid to smoothen the implementation and compliance to the Act, the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, and NAICOM in 2022 launched the relevant guidelines which was expected to address the loopholes that were identified in implementing the provisions of the Act, particularly, Sections 49 and 50.

However, research has shown that insurance firms before now still faced lots of challenges ranging from capital inadequacy and others.

With the birth of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, the insurance industry is now positioned for global competitiveness while the ongoing recapitalisation exercise is expected to pave way for big, strong and reliable insurance firms.

The 2026 edition of the Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation has recorded 237 entries, the highest submissions so far, since its establishment in 2004.

Dr Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Nigeria LNG Ltd., NLNG, disclosed this at the handover of the entries to the Prize’s Advisory Board on Thursday in Lagos.

Horsfall described the handover as a significant milestone in the prize cycle, noting that it reflected the increasing interest in science, innovation and digital technologies, among Nigerian researchers and innovators.

She said the volume of entries underscored the growing relevance of the prize, as a platform for identifying solutions capable of addressing real-world development challenges.

According to her, the 2026 edition is focused on the theme:“Innovations in ICT; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Technologies for Development.”

Horsfall added that the theme was retained from the 2025 edition, which ended without a winner, after no entry met the required standard for selection.

“In this fourth revolution, digital infrastructure is as foundational to our survival, as electricity or water.

“For Nigeria, our economic sustainability depends on our ability to move beyond promising research and into undeniable innovation that delivers,” she said.

She added that the prize remained committed to maintaining global standards and rewarding only innovations with measurable impact and scalability.

“We believe that if a Nigerian discovery is to command global respect, it must withstand the highest levels of scrutiny. It is this conviction that guided the difficult decision seven months ago,” she said.

Chairman of the Advisory Board, Prof. Barth Nnaji, said the submission and handover of entries marked a major stage in the adjudication process.

Nnaji said the credibility of the prize was built on strict standards of excellence and rigorous evaluation.

“Our refusal to award the prize in 2025 was not a dismissal of the hard work of Nigerian innovators, rather, it reinforces that the Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation holds a gold standard of excellence,” he said.

He added that all entries would be assessed based on originality, relevance, novelty and demonstrable socio-economic impact.

According to him, the broader objective of the prize is to identify innovations capable of addressing Nigeria’s pressing development challenges.

“Our broader objective is to identify work that brings tangible impact to the challenges Nigeria faces, whether through digital health technologies that serve rural populations, or the use of AI in preserving our cultural heritage and languages,” he said.

Other members of the advisory board included Dr Nike Akande and Prof. Baba Yusuf Abubakar.

Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation, now in its 22nd year, carries a cash award of $100,000 dollars and is regarded as one of Africa’s most prestigious science awards.

The winner of the 2026 edition is expected to be unveiled at a world news conference scheduled for September.

The Nigeria Prizes have opened entries for the 2026 cycle, focusing on artificial intelligence, poetry and documentary filmmaking across science, literature and creative arts.

Mrs Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at Nigeria LNG Ltd., NLNG, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

Horsfall said the 2026 edition of the Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation would focus on Innovations in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Technologies for Development, following a no-winner outcome in the 2025 cycle.

She added that the Nigeria Prize for Literature would spotlight poetry, while the newly introduced Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts would debut with documentary filmmaking.

According to her, the Nigeria Prizes remain the country’s foremost platform for recognising excellence in science and innovation, literature and the creative arts, with a legacy spanning over two decades.

Horsfall said the selected themes reflected the realities of a rapidly evolving global environment, noting that extensive research had shown the transformative potential of ICT, artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

She said the prizes were designed to reward innovative ideas and talents capable of delivering long-term national impact, adding that the introduction of the Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts underscored NLNG’s commitment to recognising creativity as a critical driver of development.

Also, the Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Science and Innovation Prize, Prof. Barth Nnaji, urged scientists and innovators worldwide to submit works that moved beyond theory to provide deployable, scalable and practical solutions.

Nnaji said the prize was founded on the principle that science should deliver measurable outcomes, particularly within Nigeria’s development landscape.

“The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation, valued at 100,000 dollars, is open to scientists and innovators globally and seeks pioneering digital and artificial intelligence-based solutions across critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.

“For the Nigeria Prize for Literature, Nigerian poets resident in the country and in the Diaspora are invited to submit poetry collections published from 2023 onwards, with the prize also valued at 100,000 dollars,” he said.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Nigeria Prize for Literature and the Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts, Prof. Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, described the Creative Arts Prize as a significant addition to NLNG’s legacy of celebrating excellence.

She said the prize reaffirmed the belief that excellence transcended form, whether written, spoken or filmed, while also recognising poetry’s enduring role in social reflection and inquiry.

“The Nigeria Prize for Creative Arts will debut with documentary film under the theme “Identity,” offering a 20,000-dollar prize and targeting emerging Nigerian filmmakers aged 18 to 35,” she said.

She said the prize would challenge young creatives to explore individual, communal and cultural identities through rigorous storytelling and visual excellence.

News Express publisher, Mr. Isaac Umunna, has written to the founder of Haleems Integrated Services Limited, Dr. Halimat Adenike Tejuosho, demanding a written apology and a billion naira for alleged defamation and unjust disruption of business operations.

In a demand letter dated 30th December, 2025, Umunna, through his lawyers, Adewale & Adewale LP, accused Dr. Tejuosho of lying to News Express’ domain name registrant, HostAfrica, as a result of which the newspaper’s domain name was suspended on September 1, 2025, thus unjustly disrupting the paper’s operations for several hours.

According to Umunna’s lawyers, “In the evening hours of Monday, September 1, 2025, our client’s website, https://newsexpressngr.com, suddenly vanished from the Internet. Frantic efforts to access it failed, as it no longer existed. Our client’s Webmaster, Mr. Afam Nnaji of the Lagos-based Just Web Services, eventually reached the domain name registrant, HostAfrica, a South Africa-based domain name registration company, which sent an e-mail disclosing that our client’s domain name, https://newsexpressngr.com, had been suspended based on a petition from you, claiming that our client published a false story about you and that when our client was approached, he insisted on collecting money before pulling down the story.”

Accusing Dr. Tejuosho of defamation of character, Adewale & Adewale LP said: “However, contrary to your claims, our client never received any complaint about the referenced story through any means whatsoever. He could not, therefore, have entered into discussions with you, let alone demanding payment as a condition to remove the said story.

“By falsely claiming that our client “refused to take down the publication and have instead attempted to solicit money in exchange for removal”, you created the impression that our client is a disreputable journalist who fabricates stories about people and demands payment to remove them.”

The Lagos-based law firm in the letter signed by its Managing Partner, Timothy Adewale, said that, contrary to Dr. Tejuosho’s claims, the facts show as follows:

“That our client is a reputable and award-winning international journalist who has never been associated with any scandal in his 39 years of practice.

“Due to his competence and professional integrity, our client rose to occupy top positions in important local and international newspapers and magazines. These include serving, at various times, as Deputy Editor and Acting Editor of The Week Magazine Chief Operating Officer of M2 Weekly Magazine; Editor of The Moment on Sunday Newspaper; Managing Editor of City Mail Newspaper; and General Editor of the London-based Africa Today Magazine.

“Throughout his long and unblemished journalism career, our client has neither been queried nor sacked by any of his employers.

“Our client brought this professional integrity to News Express, which explains why the paper has not faced even a single lawsuit in its over 13 years of operations.

“Untainted by any hint of scandal, our client has been widely celebrated both locally and internationally as a distinguished professional journalist.

“In 1996 he was nominated Print Journalist of the Year in Nigeria and given a Certificate of Commendation by the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Media Merit Award, NMMA, on September 26, 1996.

“He was recognised as “a leading Nigerian political journalist” by The International Herald Tribune newspaper of Paris, France, on May 25, 2005.

“Two months later, on July 4 in London, our Client won the “Best Published Feature” category of the prestigious Diageo Africa Business Reporting Award, which is open to journalists all over the world.

“On February 21, 2006, our client was honoured in South Africa with a Merit Award in the Technology Policy & Investment Category of the Siemens Profile Awards for Journalism Excellence in Science and Technology Reporting in Africa.

“Due to his professionalism and good reputation, our client was in August 2010 appointed Special Assistant on Media to Prof. Dora Akunyili, who at the time was Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Communications.

This made him a Deputy Director on Grade Level 16 Step 4 in the Ministry. He served so meritoriously in that position that he was retained by Prof Akunyili as media aide after her resignation as Minister on December 15, 2010. He served in that position until Prof Akunyili’s death on June 7, 2014.”

The law firm told Dr. Tejuosho that, “As a result of the defamatory words published by you in your mail to Host Africa, our client has suffered humiliation and grievous emotional and psychological distress and damage.

“What is more, by unjustly disrupting our client’s business operations, he has suffered untold financial losses and you have caused him to breach his contracts with numerous local and international advertising clients, among them; the Central Bank of Nigeria, First Bank of Nigeria, Konga (Nigeria), Adipolo of New York, USA, and Kolorowey of New Delhi, India.”

In the light of the aforementioned facts, Umunna’s lawyers demanded the following from Dr. Tejuosho:

“A written apology for, and retraction of, the false and malicious allegations made by you against our client in the aforesaid message to Host Africa.

“A letter to Host Africa informing them that your allegations against our client are false.

“A bank certified cheque in the sum of One Billion Naira (N1bn) issued in favour of our client being damages for the defamation of his character and unjust disruption of the business of our client.”

The letter gave the Haleems Integrated Services Limited Founder 14 days to meet the demands or prepare for a legal battle.

No fewer than 12 people were confirmed dead in a multiple vehicle accident on the Yangoji–Abaji corridor of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja on Sunday.

Mr Felix Theman, the Commander, of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, FCT Sector Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the command Public Education Officer, Mrs Helen Nnaji.

Theman said that the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. at Gada Biyu, with the first distress call received at 11:47 a.m.

He said that a patrol team from Zebra 6 Unit, Yangoji, arrived at the scene within seven minutes at about 11:54 a.m.

According to him, four vehicles were involved in the crash.

“Two Volkswagen Golf cars with registration numbers GWA 162 KZ and ABJ 111 NW, a Ford Sharon bus with registration number AFN 325 YL, and a Volvo Randon trailer with registration number ANC 665 XA,” he said.

Theman said that preliminary investigations indicated that speed limit violation and loss of control led to a chain collision involving the vehicles.

He said that eyewitness accounts revealed that the trailer, belonging to African Natural Resources and Mines Ltd and coming from Gujeni in Kagarko local government area of Kaduna State with a consignment of coal, lost control.

“It however, rammed into an illegal roadside motor park, triggering the multiple crash.

“A total of 18 persons were involved in the incident, comprising eight adult males, four adult females, two male children and four female children.

“The casualty figure stood at 12 fatalities, including four adult males, two adult females, two male children and four female children.

“Three persons which are two adult males and one adult female sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt,” he said.

Theman said that the FRSC personnel administered first aid at the scene, recovered items found in the vehicles and secured them in safe custody.

He added that the injured victims were evacuated to Abaji General Hospital for urgent medical attention, while the deceased were released to their families for burial in line with religious and cultural practices.

He said that the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Nigerian Police, Kwali Division, had taken over the investigation to determine additional factors responsible for the crash.

Theman, however, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

He warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against the practice of creating illegal roadside loading and off-loading points along highways.

He also described it as a major risk that exposed passengers, hawkers and pedestrians to avoidable danger.

The commander urged road users to desist from speeding, dangerous driving, reckless overtaking, loss of control and roadside loading.

That, he said, were especially in populated areas, and called for strict compliance with all traffic safety regulations to prevent further loss of lives.

By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

The former Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji, last week resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu over allegations of certificate forgery. It was alleged that he forged his first-degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificates.

Concerns about Nnaji’s credentials first surfaced shortly after President Tinubu nominated him for a Ministerial position in 2023. Reports questioned the authenticity of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Microbiology which he claimed to have obtained from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). During his screening for the ministerial position, Nnaji presented copies of his academic and NYSC certificates to the Senate to enable the lawmakers screen and confirm his nomination. Those documents were also presented to the Directorate of State Services (DSS), for screening and vetting.

The documents indicated that he graduated from UNN in July, 1985, and completed the National Youth Service in April of the same year. That should have been a red flag to the lawmakers and the DSS if they did any scrutiny. In Nigeria, where ‘anything goes’, the red flag ‘escaped’ the eagle eye of our lawmakers and the secret police. His nomination was confirmed and he was sworn-in by the President.

If the lawmakers as well as the DSS could not spot the glaring error, politicians from his state in Enugu knew that something was fishy, but kept quiet. After two years in Abuja, and with Nnaji ‘’growing wings’’ whilst also thinking of running for governor of his state, what was kept in the closet was eventually brought out in the open.

In May this year, a letter from the UNN Registrar to the Public Complaints Commission stated that there was no record that the university issued a degree certificate to Nnaji in 1985, Again, responding to a Freedom of Information request from an online news medium, UNN’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, reaffirmed that Nnaji did not complete his studies and that no certificate was issued to him by the University in 1985.

It was revealed that although he was admitted into the University, Nnaji did not complete his studies, as he failed a Virology course (MCB 431 AB). He allegedly wrote to the university in 1986, seeking permission to re-sit the exam. The internal memo between Nnaji and the university contradicts his claim of graduation in 1985. How his name and picture got on the list of graduands for 1985 still remains a mystery that only the University can unravel.

However, following persistent reportage on his fake certificate scandal, Nnaji approached a court seeking to restrain the UNN, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Senate from releasing his academic records to journalists. The court, again, declined to grant the full injunctions.

READ ALSO: Tinubu celebrates son, Seyi, at 40 for generational impact

Under growing pressure from the media, the public, and civil society organizations, Nnaji was forced to tender his resignation to President Tinubu last week. In his letter, he maintained his innocence and blamed ‘political blackmailers’ for the controversy surrounding his credentials.

Nnaji’s fall from grace to grass over fake certificate scandal is not the first to be recorded in our national life and won’t definitely be the last. Many Nigerians have put the blame squarely on the doorsteps of the DSS and the Senate. Those are the two institutions mandated by law to screen and confirm those to be appointed to top political offices by the President.

If we are thinking of building a just society where the rule of law and strong institutions will outlive us, it is time for the DSS and the Senate to wake up and perform their duties with the diligence that it deserves.

Although the Senate is trying to shift the blame on the Secret Police, they are also liable in what is gradually becoming a yearly embarrassment to the nation. Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has come out to say that the Senate only confirms persons nominated for appointment by the Presidency, but that they are not directly responsible for their screening.

I find his position laughable. Hear our lawmaker: “We are not screening. Get that clear. Screening and confirmation are two different things. Before the President sends a candidate to the Senate, there are a lot of processes, including screening them, not only on certificates, but also conducting a background check by the SSS. The SSS has to clear him. Last time the SSS brought something against somebody, we dropped the person. So don’t say we are not doing our job. We are not doing any screening; we are to do confirmation,” he said. No sir, that is not how it should be.

If the Senate is not running away from the mess that the nation has found itself, the institution and the DSS cannot wash their hands off the inglorious fake certificate scandal that has now become a yearly embarrassment to Nigeria.

It is time for the DSS to save face, and save the nation from these recurring embarrassment. They have the manpower and know-how to do their jobs if they put their minds to it

Established on June 5, 1986, the DSS is a security agency in Nigeria under the supervision of the Presidency of Nigeria expected to report its activities to the President through the National Security Adviser. The law that created the DSS did not mince words. Section 3 of the National Security Agencies Act gives the Service a narrow mandate: “To prevent and detect crimes that threaten Nigeria’s internal security as well as to safeguard non-military classified information relating to national security”.

As Ministers holding strategic positions within the government and with access to sensitive and classified information, it is crucial to vet the nominees thoroughly to safeguard national security and prevent any risks of compromise. The DSS, being the country’s primary domestic intelligence agency, is entrusted with the conduct of comprehensive background checks on nominees to ensure that they do not pose any security threats.

In spite of the law, the issue of fake certificates began in 1999, with two top principal officers of the National Assembly — Senate President Evan(s) Enwerem, and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari. In the case of Evan(s), Nigerians could not tell with certainty if their Senate President was Evan or Evans Enwerem.

The news of Buhari’s age and certificate forgery first broke out on 16 February, 1999, by an investigative news publication, TheNews magazine. Their investigation concluded that Buhari was born in 1970, not 1963 as he claimed, and also that he never graduated from the University of Toronto. When the heat became too much, Buhari was forced to step aside and pleaded for forgiveness from Nigerians.

Ever since Evan or Evans Enwerem and Salisu Buhari, certificate forgery has spread like wildfire and also caught up with members of the executive arm of government.

Senator Douye Diri, became the Governor of Bayelsa State, simply because of the discrepancies in the name of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Deputy Governorship candidate in the state, Senator Degi-Eremienyo. This was in February 2020.

Five years earlier, Minister of Finance, Ms. Kemi Adeosun resigned her appointment following a scandal concerning the alleged forgery of her NYSC certificate. Ms. Adeosun had been invited by the late President Muhammadu Buhari to return from her base in the United Kingdom to join his government, but it ended in disgrace. Those who package the ‘’Oluwole’’ certificate for her were those that later exposed her and she had no alternative than to resign and return to her UK base.

On August 4, 2017, it was the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) that broke the news that two Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICIR) Board members appointed by the Federal Government were under investigation for “multi-million-naira corruption”. It was like a bad movie. Yet, the two appointees, Maimuna Aliyu and Sa’ad Alanamu were investigated for series of corruption cases while they served in public offices. While Alanamu was investigated on corruption charges allegedly committed while he headed several institutions in Kwara State, Aliyu had a longstanding case of abuse of office, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds against her while working with the FCTA-owned Aso Savings and Loans.

The ICIR report and public outcry that followed the discovery prompted the Federal Government to direct the two of them to step down from the proposed 14-man Board. The ICIR would later report that the Federal Government, through the DSS, indeed, failed to carry out security checks on the nominees.

It was not long after the opprobrium that greeted that scandal died down that the Federal Government found itself in another faux pas. This time around, it was the appointment of persons confirmed to have died, into Boards of parastatals.

Specifically, it was in December, 29, 2017, when the Government, after appointing eight dead persons into different Boards that it became clear that the DSS had no input in cross-checking the list of all the appointees. Rather, it was media scrutiny of the list that revealed how the dead were ‘resurrected’ in the list.

The office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) announced the appointment of 209 Board Chairpersons, and 1,258 board members. It was the largest single appointments made by the late President Buhari since assuming office in 2015. The dead appointees were late Reverend Christopher Utova as member of the Nigeria Institute of Social and Economic Research; late Senator Francis Okpozo as Chairman of the Nigerian Press Council, and late Chief Donald Ugbaja as a member of the Consumer Protection Council.

The appointment of dead persons into the Boards was not the only issue here. The list of the appointees also contained duplication of names, with few persons appointed into more than one Board. Sabo Nanono was appointed as a member of the Board of the National Agency for Science and Engineering (NASENI) and also as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). Kabiru Matazu was appointed as Chairman of the FCT Universal Education Board and also to chair the Board of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. Umaymah Abdullahi was named on the Board of Lake Chad Research Institute, Maiduguri, as well as the Federal Medical Centre, Sokoto. Also, Habiba Umar was appointed on the board of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, and also, the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin-Kebbi. The Federal Government, after the embarrassment, was forced to call for a review of the list.

These were clear indications that there was no transmission of any security report on the nominees from the DSS to the Senate that has the constitutional duty to finally clear and confirm them. It is also possible that there were no security checks by the Secret police in the first instance. What a shame.

Even without a proper job of conducting background checks on ministerial nominees and board appointees, the DSS, again, in 2022, dabbled into the screening of those who intended to become senior advocates in Nigeria. The then Chief Justice of Nigeria, Emmanuel Ayoola, had written to the DSS to always conduct background checks and screen those intending to wear the silk, even though many lawyers are of the view that there is no section in the DSS law that empowers the institution to sniff around the professional records of lawyers vying for silk gowns. Again, the Legal Practitioners Act (LPA), which governs the conferment of a SAN leaves no room for ambiguity. Section 5(2) provides that a lawyer must: have at least ten years post-call experience, and have achieved distinction in the legal profession as determined by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC). The LPPC is the sole statutory gatekeeper here, not the DSS, not the EFCC, and not the ICPC.

It is time for the DSS to save face, and save the nation from these recurring embarrassment. They have the manpower and know-how to do their jobs if they put their minds to it. But in Nigeria, where everybody is trying to survive the harsh economic realities, the secret police that should be a shield for the nation has its flanks open, too.

By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

Every year since 2004, except when COVID-19 reared its ugly head, the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) sets aside a $100,000 grand prize as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to celebrate scientists who have through their work, impacted Nigeria and humanity. This year’s event to announce the winner of the Nigeria Prize for Science award was held at the Lagos Continental Hotel few days back.

On the high table were senior staff of the NLNG and the Advisory Board for the award led by its Chairman, Professor Bart Nnaji. Nnaji however dropped a bombshell when he told the audience that though the board received a total of 112 entries, none was deemed good enough to cart home the prize.

Most of the invited guests were stunned, and disappointment written on the faces of many. But Nnaji said that the Advisory Board was also disappointed by the development and that the painful decision had to be taken in order to protect the integrity of the award.

Established in 2004, the Nigeria Prize for Science encourages Nigerian scientists and their counterparts the world over to submit entries which they believed has had tremendous impact on the lives of the people.

The theme for the 2025 edition was: ‘’Innovations in ICT, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies for Development’’. The topic was a good choice, going by the impact AI and ICT is having on the world stage. Even without being a scientist, the way and manner Artificial Intelligent is shaping our world has left many wondering whether there would still be a work force in the next 30 to 40 years with the ways and manner machines are complementing and, in some cases, taking over work hitherto reserved for human beings, all thanks to advancement in Science and Technology.

There are several tools that are now available to write news and edit stories. Recently, a Television Station used a robot to cast news in place of a human being. There are now robots that can perform wifely roles to a man who desires such. Drones have been developed that can deliver drugs to end-users, thereby shortening the supply chain bottleneck in areas where there is conflict or war. It is those kinds of entries that the organizers were looking forward to receiving, but in their words, what they got “were not up to the standards”.

Early this year, scientists and innovators worldwide were invited to compete for the $100,000 prize, which honours groundbreaking solutions to challenges relevant to Nigeria and Nigerians. The call for entry closed at midnight on April 30, 2025. To ensure a rigorous and credible process, a panel of judges comprising distinguished professors and relevant scientific experts was appointed by the Advisory Board and LNG Limited. The selection process also reflected both gender and ethnic balances.

READ ALSO: Family planning: Why men should embrace vasectomy -Experts

At the inaugural meeting in Lagos, the panel of judges developed the 2025 Nigeria Prize for Science Entry’s evaluation criteria, which was subsequently approved by the Advisory Board. These criteria included academic track record, quality, recognitions, uniqueness, innovation, impact, commercialisation, soundness, and patent.

At the close of submissions and 112 entries received, the panel of judges found 54 to be valid and progressed for adjudication. Then, the judges conducted independent reviews and produced a shortlist of 10, with the top four entries ratified by the Advisory Board for further evaluation with a view to choosing a winner. But at the end of the day, it was unanimously concluded that all submissions, while they demonstrated commendable effort, lacked the soundness, usability, and impact that characterized past awards. The judges also discovered that some entries did not fully address all three thematic areas, while showing weakness in the practicality of the innovations in solving scenario-specific problems, lack of clarity on the operability of the innovations, and, no evidence of robust field testing of the innovations.

Indeed, the advisory board must be commended for taking the tough but necessary decision not to award this year’s prize for Science to anyone. As stated by Prof. Nnaji and reiterated by Dr. (Mrs.) Nike Akande, the board were more interested in innovations that is presently having a positive impact on Nigerians as most past winners have demonstrated through their works.

Just last year, the trio of Dr. Olajide Otitoju, Dr. Eni Oko, and Professor Meihong Wang won the prize for their research on Process Intensification Technology for Greenhouse Emission Control. Their entry was a brilliant scientific work that focuses on developing solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable fuel production.

Otitoju is a Chemical Engineer and post-doctoral research Associate at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, while Oko is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University, also in the UK, while Professor Wang is the Process and Energy Systems Engineering Research Group at the University of Sheffield, also in the UK. The trio came together using their knowledge to provide a technological solution for capturing and utilizing carbon dioxide, which helps in sustainable fuel production and reducing carbon emissions. This contributes greatly to global efforts to combat climate change.

The devastating effect that climate change is having on our environment, particularly in Northern Nigeria cannot be overemphasized and for the trio to come up with a solution that could reduce emissions in our environment deserves all the accolades.

With the no-winner for the Nigeria Prize for Science this year, it is hoped that our scientists would put in more efforts into research and winning the prestigious award.

In the same vein, Professor Hippolite Amadi emerged as the winner of The Nigeria Prize for Science 2023 on his entry, “Innovation for Enhancement of Healthcare Therapy”. His three (3) technological innovations, aimed at saving the lives of neonates by making the delivery of oxygen cheap and easy at birth, is highly commendable. His first invention, the non-invasive Neonatal Ventilator (The bubble PoliteCPAP) is a key invention for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation of very low-birth-weight neonates. His second innovation, the Oxygen Delivery Blender System, allows for the safe delivery of oxygen without the danger of toxicity; and the third is the Oxygen Splitter System, which allows for the use of a shared source of oxygen to many neonates at a time in situations where piped oxygen is not available.

With a career spanning over three decades since 1987, Professor Amadi has made significant contributions to the fields of Engineering in Healthcare, Orthopaedics, and Neonatology research. His journey began when he graduated as the top student in Mechanical Engineering from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 1988. Professor Amadi’s global expertise in Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Neonatal innovations for low-income settings has been shaped by his exceptional academic achievements. As a former student and now a Professor at Imperial College London, UK, he has earned multiple postgraduate medical degrees, including a PhD.

His dedication to medical practice and research has led to the establishment of a dynamic team comprising nurses, doctors, and technicians. This team has covered more than 30 tertiary hospitals across Nigeria over the past two decades, granting Amadi unparalleled access to a vast repository of evidence-based data on a national scale.

Professor Amadi’s impact extends beyond Nigeria. He is a recognised figure in global discussions on the African perspective of climate change’s impact on neonatal health, earning him a consistent place on the lists of influential thinkers by organizations such as WHO, Wellcome Trust, and the World Bank. His exceptional accomplishments have also earned him a prestigious spot in the Imperial College, London’s Hall of Fame as part of the alumni’s story series.

In 2022, the Nigeria Prize for Science was awarded jointly to two research teams: Sesan Peter Ayodeji and Emmanuel Olatunji Olatomilola, for their work on ‘’Process Plant for Plantain Flour’’, and Muhyideen Oyekunle , and Shehu Garki Ado for their research on ‘’Grains in Grain Yield of Released Maize (Zea Mays L) Cultivars Under Drought and Well-Watered Conditions”.

With so much work done in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies, the Advisory Board believes that there are many breakthroughs in that field already that is sharpening the local economy in Nigeria and the world at large and that the theme should be retained for next year. But to change the narrative, the sponsor of the prize, NLNG, has agreed to pump the $100,000 prize money for this year into publicising the award so that more scientists would be aware of the programme and put in their entries next year.

The General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, NLNG, Sophia Horsfall, is of the view that research has shown the immense potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and digital technologies in reshaping global industries and societies, offering innovative solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, whist acknowledging the fact that as the world transitions from the Industrial Age to the Intelligence Age, these advancements provide new opportunities to drive economic growth, foster social progress, and build a sustainable future.

While the Nigeria Prize for Science has produced no winner this year, its twin brothers, the Nigeria Prize for Literature, as well as the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism, one of the country’s most prestigious literary accolades, which shifted focus to Prose Fiction for the 2025 edition, would have their winners announced this weekend.

The Nigeria Prize for Literature winner will go home with the sum of $100,000, while the Prize for Literary Criticism is $10,000.

With the no-winner for the Nigeria Prize for Science this year, it is hoped that our scientists would put in more efforts into research and winning the prestigious award. Prof Nnaji and the Advisory Board have also demonstrated exemplary conduct by not awarding arbitrarily. By so doing, they have protected the integrity of the award.

See you next week.

Key players and experts in Nigeria’s oil and gas and power sectors have called for concerted measures and actions that will lead to property utilization of the country’s vast gas reserves.

They expressed the opinion that Nigeria’s gas reserves were critical asset towards achieving the ongoing energy transition that will be affordable and sustainable.

Speaking at the 4th Oriental News conference in Lagos on Thursday, July 24, 2025 themed “Integrating Nigeria’s Gas Potentials into Strategic Energy Transition Initiatives,” the Manager, Energy Transition NLNG, Temitope Ogedengbe, advised that Nigeria must avoid adopting a “copy-paste” approach to energy transition, insisting that the country must tailor its strategy to reflect local realities, including the urgent need for economic growth, energy security, and national development.

“Our transition must leverage our unique strengths and resources to grow our economy,” Ogedengbe said, adding, “Energy transition should not be a copy-paste exercise.

“Nigeria must design its own, since we need economic development, energy security, and to address developmental issues.”

Ogedengbe, while highlighting challenges around gas utilisation, lamented that despite Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources, a large portion was still being flared or re-injected due to the absence of viable commercial arrangements.

“We’re not taking nearly the amount we should be. We are still failing and re-injecting because there is no commercial arrangement to optimise this; for many reasons,” he stated.

He noted that while marginal fields held potential, they were difficult to produce economically.

“The issues there are marginal fields, which are difficult to produce,” he said, adding that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s (NUPRC) Gas Flaring Commercialisation Programme was trying to address that.

According to him, a significant chunk of Nigeria’s gas is still either exported or flared, while domestic utilisation and value addition remain underdeveloped.

“We are not investing enough, and we are not examining the right approaches,” he added.

Speaking on the global LNG market, Ogedengbe noted that although there was still a market for LNG produced by Nigeria, demand patterns were shifting, particularly in Europe, where buyers now favour lower-carbon LNG options.

He said, “There is still a market for LNG produced in Nigeria, but what is happening is that Europe is asking for lower-carbon LNG.

“There’s a need to use operational levers to reduce carbon, attract premium markets, and unlock funding opportunities, including through reduced taxes and levies.”

He further stated the NLNG remained central to Nigeria’s gas future, revealing that the company plans to expand its capacity to 30 million tonnes per annum.

“As part of its energy transition strategy, the company is integrating technologies and processes aimed at reducing emissions and generating carbon credits.

“We’re using offsets to reduce our emissions, both at the national and international levels, to take carbon out of the atmosphere and promote our operations,” he explained.

Ogedengbe emphasized the need for a multi-pronged, well-coordinated approach to decarbonising the country’s gas sector to ensure long-term viability and global competitiveness.

Also, at the conference, former Power Minister, Prof. Bart Nnaji, said that shortage of gas supply and infrastructure deficit had continued to act as disincentive to investment and growth of the power sector.

Nnaji said in the next two decades power generation in the country would be dominated by gas fired plants.

He attributed Nigeria’s persistent gas shortage to inadequate investment in gas infrastructure and called for more support from both government and the private sector.

Nnaji, who chaired the event, addressed stakeholders from across the oil and gas value chain, including key government officials.

He said the country’s gas sector remained underdeveloped due to insufficient investment in extraction, transmission, and transportation.

“The focus should not rest solely on government-led efforts — the private sector must also play a vital role,” the former minister said.

“What we need is for the government to act as a true enabler, offering the necessary support for infrastructure and gas harvesting. It’s baffling that with over 210 trillion cubic feet of gas, we still face local shortages.

“We’re unable to produce sufficient quantities to support operations across the country. Though operations improved this year, they weren’t previously at full capacity. A seventh train is underway, but we need more gas.”

He said Nigeria’s history of mining and exporting coal before abandoning it reflected a wider pattern of resource neglect.

Nnaji said gas-fired plants were critical to Nigeria’s power generation, emphasising the need for a reliable supply to ensure thermal plants operate effectively.

He noted that Geometric Power Ltd, which he chairs, is among the companies generating electricity through thermal sources.

“For effective supply from thermal plants, an adequate and reliable gas supply is vital. While we have hydro power, gas-fired plants remain dominant and will likely stay that way for the next ten to twenty years,” he said.

Nnaji acknowledged the role of renewable energy in rural electrification but maintained that Nigeria’s baseload power must continue to come from gas or hydro sources.

He noted that hydro power, however, comes with limitations that require regional cooperation.

In her submission, Engr. Chichi Emenike, Acting Managing Director and Gas Asset Manager of Neconde Energy Limited, sounded alarm over the consequences of some policies of government that has undermined the ongoing energy transition.

According to her, unpaid gas supplies, dollarised operations, and policy inconsistencies were discouraging investment in the sector.

Emenike said Neconde, for instance, had gas that had been produced and supplied to the electricity generation companies (GenCos) and that had not been paid for almost two years now.

“This is a serious conundrum, whereas we have sourced funds from somewhere to produce these gas molecules from our facilities. How am I going to pay back?”

Emenike further explained that Nigeria’s upstream gas production was highly dollarised, making it costlier than crude oil development and difficult to sustain without a commercially viable framework.

“Don’t forget that the gas production industry is highly dollarised, including the requisite inputs. There is no part of the operation, including the technology, that is produced locally. The bulk of it has to be imported in US$.

“The O&M, well drilling, and accessories to drill a gas well are all dollarised. So, it costs more than what it costs to drill a crude oil well. The handling of a gas well is highly sophisticated, unlike that of crude oil.”

READ ALSO: WEATHER FORECAST: NiMet forecasts rain, thunderstorms

Speaking on systemic issues within the gas-to-power value chain, Engr. Emenike said, “Over 500 million standard cubic feet (scf) of gas are being transported with the NGIC pipeline.

“If you multiply this figure by one dollar, you will understand the cost. Whereas so much money went into drilling some of these wells, it costs $35,000 plus or minus, and that is outside other assumptions of fees.”

Commenting on the financing and investment environment, Emenike called for a pragmatic national energy plan that begins with achievable goals, rather than lofty ambitions.

“Let us start with what is doable; I mean the low-hanging fruit. Let us stop with big numbers. We should tidy up small fields that are struggling to juggle both CAPEX and OPEX.

“We need to sit down once as a nation to be selfish enough to determine what is needed to take care of Nigeria’s economy alone in the Gulf of Guinea.”

She called for urgent clarity on Nigeria’s position in the energy transition and a realistic approach to funding.

“Where do we sit as Nigerians today on this energy transition plan? Where is the money to run the transition?

“Presently in Nigeria, it is difficult for a gas investor to determine end-to-end where the funds would be coming from. We need a strategy; we need to be serious. Or else, gas investors would rather take what they should have invested in the Nigerian economy to Mozambique or elsewhere.”

Emenike further warned about the economic risks associated with policy instability.

“Gas economics is such that it must be end-to-end. Even before you draw down the first financing, you have tied that investment to a commercial arrangement.

“When you have a business, as much as you think you know, in the case of Nigeria, once you put your leg out in this economy, you will see so many things flood in unexpectedly. Your IRR (rate of return) goes down the drain due to policy flip-flops and multiplicities of levies and fees.”

She insisted that the sector needed regulatory reforms and an end to what she described as rent-seeking behaviour by government agencies.

“We have to deal with the rent-seeking attitude of our regulators to enable investors repatriate their investment financing.

“They should stop flogging investors with all forms of regulations and later charge them with potential incidents of non-conformity, which translates to fines, even for not operating, after they have created the crisis.”

Calling for collaborative efforts, she advocated infrastructure sharing and coordination within the value chain.

“We need to leverage infrastructure to unlock the stranded assets across the country. We need to look at how to put together our war chest to achieve a lot for the industry. We need to set the rules of the game.”

She emphasised the importance of investor confidence and a market-driven approach.

“Every investor wants to see a clear line of sight. Market forces should be allowed to play out. The government should not create a monopolistic environment that stifles investment. They should allow it to have that flexibility.

“None of these government officials understand how investors raise capital to finance their projects and the terms of it. Government has no business in business. They should stop the rent-seeking attitude and stop looking for short-term benefits. Quick fixes will not work.”

She has therefore challenged the FG to focus inwardly and begin with achievable solutions.

According to her, “There is much more to be gained if we have a very selfish Nigerian plan that focuses on Nigerian interests alone. This can service the entire Gulf of Guinea if we are serious. Let us start with the small gas fields.”

She further urged the federal government to stop putting benchmarks on gas for power, adding that the market forces should be allowed to dictate the price.

Emenike charged the Nigerian government to allow flexibility in the market and encourage alliances within the value chain operators.
