The Federal High Court will, on Monday, hear a motion filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, seeking an order transferring him to Abuja National Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Justice Musa Liman had granted the motion ex-parte praying for the permission of the court to hear the application during the vacation period in view of its urgency.

Justice Liman, who fixed September 15 for the hearing, ordered Kanu’s lawyer, Uchenna Njoku, SAN, to serve all the processes and the hearing notice on the Department of State Services, DSS, in order for the security agency to respond appropriately.

“I believe that the right to health is as important as the right to life.

“And so I agree that this matter can be heard by the vacation court,” Justice Liman, who is also a vacation judge, had said.

Kanu, in the ex-parte motion with charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, had sought a relief.

Kanu, in the motion dated September 2 but filed on September 3 by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, sought an order “granting leave for the applicant’s motion dated 1st September, 2025 to be heard before the vacation judge.”

Giving an 11-ground argument why their request should be granted, Agabi said Kanu is presently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho in charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

READ ALSO: Calling for Nepal-scale protest a violation of Nigerian laws

He said Kanu, on May 19, filed an application praying the court to admit him to bail pending the hearing and determination of the terrorism charge.

The lawyer, however, said that the said application could not be taken before the annual vacation of the court, hence his continued detention.

According to him, while awaiting the resumption of the court activities, the applicant’s health took a worrisome decline, necessitating the invitation of doctors for the purpose of carrying out a thorough and extensive examination on the applicant.

“The examination revealed issues to his health including organs such as his pancreas and liver as well as an emerging lump underneath his armpit and dangerously low levels of potassium.

“The doctors have recommended that he be moved to the National Hospital as an interim measure to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline.

“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement thereby making more pressing, the need to bring this application and have same heard by a vacation judge,” Agabi said.

He alleged that a letter by the doctors to the Director-General of the DSS, advising the transfer of Kanu had gone without answer.

He said the urgency of the matter had, therefore, necessitated the filing of the instant application as a measure to arrest further decline of his health while spirited efforts are being expended to ensure his treatment.

The senior lawyer said that the grant of the application would not occasion any injustice on the complainant, DSS.

Besides, Agabi said the court “is imbued with jurisdiction to hear and grant the prayers sought in the application.”

Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother to Nnamdi Kanu, in the affidavit he deposed to, averred that the IPOB leader recently complained of weakness and pains in his body.

He said thiat “prompted the invitation of doctors led by the Eminent Emeritus Professor Austin A.C. Agaji, who on 1st September, 2025 at about 2:30pm,” told him that several tests were conducted on Kanu in August.

Emmanuel said the doctor told him, at Agabi’s law firm, that it was discovered that the IPOB leader was suffering from issues relating to his liver and kidney as well as dangerously low level of potassium.

“He was further diagnosed of a swelling around his armpit area which requires urgent attention to ascertain the cause and thereafter to seek appropriate medical treatment,” he averred.

The Federal High Court, in Abuja, on Thursday, adjourned the alleged money laundering case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to March 7, 2025 (tomorrow) for continuation of trial.

When the matter was called on Thursday, counsel for the EFCC, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, called its witness on subpoena, Williams Abimbola.

Abimbola, a Compliant Officer with the United Bank for Africa Plc, confirmed to the court that a further subpoena was served on the bank.

Justice Emeka Nwite admitted the subpoena and marked it ‘Exhibit 7’.

The subpoena, according to the prosecution, requested for the production of the statement of account of one Maselina Njoku, from 1st January, 2019 to 31st December, 2020.

The witness confirmed that it was the request from the bank and added that a certificate of compliance was also issued.

The witness confirmed 10 withdrawals in favour of Abdulsalam Hudu, in the sum of N10 million each on December 12, 2018.

She said the withdrawals were done with cheques and presented across the counter.

The witness, however, confirmed, during cross-examination, that the former governor’s name did not feature in the opening and management of the said Kogi Government House Bank account.

She also noted that she was not the accounts officer of the Kogi Government House account and that the account is domiciled in Lokoja, Kogi State, and not Area 3, Abuja, where she works.

On cross-examination, the Defence Counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, asked the witness that, as a compliance officer, did her duty involve protecting the integrity of the bank from legal penalty, reputational damage and financial losses? “Yes,” she responded.

The witness was also asked to name the three signatories on the account, which she did.

For Alhaji Yakubu Ismail, who was Permanent Secretary, she said, “We only have his picture on this form.”

Daudu SAN asked, “Now, in both the account opening documents and the statement of account from E1 to E72, does the name ‘Yahaya Bello’ appear anywhere?”

“No, the name Yahaya Bello does not feature,” the witness responded.

The Defendant’s lawyer again asked, “Please look at Exhibit 2P1-3P62. Does the name ‘Yahaya Bello’ appear anywhere in the document?”

“My Lord, the name Yahaya Bello does not feature on the exhibits,” the witness answered.

Daudu, SAN, therefore closed his cross-examination.

The EFCC counsel, moved to re-examine the witness.

Daudu, SAN objected, but the judge allowed him after a brief argument.

Pinheiro, SAN, then asked the witness if she was familiar with the signature on the document.

She said she signed on behalf of one Edward Bananga.

READ ALSO: Building collapse: Two killed, six injured in Lagos

But the Defendant’s Counsel again objected and moved to cross-examine the witness.

“My Lord, the witness initially disowned the signature, but under re-examination, the prosecution led her to admit it. Therefore, I have the right to challenge that admission and prove that her claim regarding the signature is incorrect,” he said.

“Cross examination is meant to prove the accuracy or veracity of the witness. I am entitled to disprove what she said. This is in the interest of justice,” Daudu SAN added.

He then asked the witness to read the document.

Reading from the document, she said, “I Edward Bananga hereby certified and confirmed that…”

“I put it to you that You are not Edward Bananga,” the Defendant’s Counsel said.

“I am not Edward Bananga, my lord,” the witness answered.

Another witness, Nicholas Ohehomon, from the American International School, was presented by the prosecution.

The exhibits tendered included the school’s statements of account, admission letters of the children of the defendant and payment receipts.

The witness confirmed the different classes the children were admitted into.

Exhibit 12P was also tendered, which was a contractual agreement for post-paid school fees for the children.

The prosecution presented a letter from the EFCC to AIS, Abuja, through the Registrar.

It was marked Exhibit 18 and an account provided by the EFCC for a refund.

The court, thereafter, adjourned to tomorrow, 7th March, at 10am, for continuation of trial.

The Coalition of Igbo Political and Social-Cultural Groups, as well as market leaders in Lagos State, has distanced itself from the proposed 10-day national hunger protest, stating that Ndigbo will not participate in any demonstration.

The coalition, made up of 16 large groups, which include the Council of Ndieze in Lagos; Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos; South-East Forum in Lagos; Igbo Mandate; Seven Igbo Towns Unions; Igbo Speaking Community; Igbo Vision APC Lagos; Igbo Market Men and Women Associations, and Ndigbo in APC, advised Igbo traders to stay home and not open their businesses on days of the protest, fixed for August 1 to 10, to avoid being attacked.

The Igbo stakeholders in Lagos State noted that while there is no dispute that there is hardship in the country, the current economic situation bedevilling the country is not limited to Nigeria and was not caused by the incumbent government led by President Bola Tinubu.

They said the present situation of things in the country was a cumulative effect and result of past bad governance, which logically and sensibly could not be attributed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which is barely one year in the saddle.

READ ALSO: Protests: OPC warns against violence, tells FG to reverse policies

Speaking during a press conference held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, the coordinator of the coalition, Chief Anselm Njoku, said a national protest at a time when the federal government was trying to revamp the economy was going to be counter-productive, hence ill advised.

He said, “We are distancing ourselves and the entire Ndigbo in Lagos from the planned protest by some unscrupulous faceless elements, who are partly using Igbo nomenclatures to fan the embers of unsounded agitation. Nigerians should develop a culture of dialogue with the government and deploy constructive criticism without resorting to unnecessary provocative protests and violence.

“It is in this regard that we enjoin all Igbo of all extraditions, stakeholders, residents, traders, and captains of industries not to join in the protest. Lagos is Yoruba land, and Ndigbo, who are residents here, have contributed immensely to its development, so they cannot be used, coerced in whatever form, to destroy assets.

“We are not destruction-prone and cannot be part of those seeking to destroy what we partly built. Ndigbo are not wired for destruction but develop wherever we are residing.

“Let it be known that from all intelligence gatherings, the faceless organisers of this planned protest are not known to us, not Igbos, and are merely hiding under Ndigbo names, dropping Igbo names to create confusion and gather credibility.”

Njoku, who noted that President Tinubu inherited a bad economy and should be given time to settle down, thanked the president for approving the South East Development Commission.

The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, says it vaccinated 30 million children in Nigeria in the last five years.

The communication specialist, Mr Geoffrey Njoku, made the assertion on Monday in Kano during a two-day media dialogue.

The dialogue was on UNICEF’s new country programme 2023-2027 and the status of implementation of the Child Rights Law (2023) in states.

According to Njoku, the number of vaccinated children is part of the organisation’s country programme result for 2018-2022.

He added that the vaccinations were done through integrated campaigns against life threatening diseases.

“Fifty eight million children were vaccinated against polio; also we achieved zero dose strategy in 100 local government areas to reach underserved children across 18 states.

“Twenty two million children also received two doses of Vitamin A in 2022.”

Njoku also said that the organisation facilitated birth registration for 7.4 million children under the age of five.

He also said that 2.8 million children living in conflict affected areas received psychosocial support.

On education, he said that the organisation supported 1.5 million girls to enter schools using a new evidence-based approach, while five million children continued learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That, he said, was achieved using radio, television and home based materials.

He, however, said that in the new 2023-2027 programme for Nigeria, its vision is “to ensure the rights of every child in Nigeria especially the most excluded, to survive, thrive, learn, be protected and develop to his or her full potential”.

It also hopes to free them from poverty in a safe and sustainable climate and environment.

The five-year strategic plan which began in January is to help Nigerian children who are left behind in developmental strides meet up with their counterparts in other parts of the world.

The organisation intends to achieve the plan using the four major components of child survival (Health, Polio, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and HIV/AIDS), basic education, child protection and social policy and gender equality.

The plan has Universal Health Coverage, UHC, reduction of maternal neonatal mortality and rapid response to public health outbreaks as goals.

“By 2027, we want to have over one million additional children immunised (zero-dose), 15,000 additional community health workers trained, over 1,700 Primary Health Care facilities in 14 states meet PHC minimum standards.

“We also want to have state level and national capacities built to prepare and respond to public health emergencies.

“On nutrition, we project that we would have 50 million children aged six to 59 months receive Vitamin A twice a year.

“Also, 12.5 million women (50 per cent of pregnant women) receive more than 90 iron-folic acid tablets or micronutrient supplements in 19 states.”

In the education sector, the organisation said it planned to support 10 million children to access formal or non-formal education by 2027.

The organisation had said that many children in Nigeria were left behind in many areas.

It also said that the nation had the world’s highest number of out-of-school children as an estimated 10.1 million of primary age school children were not in school.
