The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has announced that the enrolment drive at the ward level is still ongoing and progressing steadily across the federation.

The exercise started officially on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, in a statement he issued.

NIMC reiterated that the National Identification Number, NIN, remained a foundational requirement for accessing critical government services in Nigeria.

It therefore encouraged all citizens and residents who had not yet enrolled to take advantage of the decentralised exercise and present themselves at designated ward enrolment centres.

To ensure smooth operations, NIMC advised members of the public to:

Check the NIMC website for the nearest designated enrolment point within their ward

Cooperate with enrolment officials

Provide accurate information during registration

Visit and follow NIMC official communication channels for verified information and updates: www.nimc.gov.ng.

NIMC said it remained committed to achieving inclusive identity coverage nationwide and called on all citizens and residents to come out en masse to register and obtain their National Identification Number.

To ensure effective service delivery and smooth management of the National Identification Number, NIN, enrolment in the Diaspora, the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has successfully upgraded its diaspora enrolment platform.

NIMC’s Head, Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, made this known in a statement on Monday.

He said the upgrade process, which was successfully completed, would, amongst many other benefits, provide a seamless, robust, more secure, efficient and effective NIN service delivery to Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Consequently, he added, NIMC Diaspora Front-End Partners, FEPs, had been onboarded on the upgraded system with intensive training to equip the FEPs with the prerequisite knowledge on the application and effective management of the new system.

He said while all the Diaspora FEPs were required to obtain and activate their NIN enrolment licenses on the upgraded platform within the next 48 hours, diaspora applicants could access enrolment services from the compliant FEPs.

READ ALSO: Tinubu excited as NAFDAC maintains WHO ML3

The commission, he stated, apologised for any inconvenience the platform upgrade process might have caused and had set up a dedicated service team to resolve all issues related to diaspora enrolment.

“Diaspora applicants experiencing issues with NIN enrolment should please reach the Commission via nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng for timely resolution,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, NIN enrolment is ongoing across all the centres in Nigeria.

According to Adegoke, applicants can locate the nearest enrolment centres on the NIMC website – www.nimc.gov.ng – and proceed for enrolment.

He said Nigerians at home or in the Diaspora could also modify their NIN data through the https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng portal.

NIN holders, he said, were equally enjoined to download the NIMC NINAuth App on either iOS or Google Play Store to instantly verify their NINs, approve who sees their information, take total control of their data and enjoy seamless verification and authentication services.

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has stressed the importance of the guidelines on the access to the self-service modification portal of the National Identification Number, NIN.

The attention of the general public was called to the guidelines in a press statement issued by the Head, Corporate Communications Unit, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, on Thursday.

He said the measures put in place by the commission were to safeguard and protect the Identity of the users of the self-service modifications portal.

The commission, Adegoke said, urged all users to carefully follow the guidelines to avoid unnecessary disruptions and delays.

“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as the Commission continue to safeguard your data and improve service delivery,” he said.

READ ALSO: BREAKING: WAEC recalls 2025 WASSCE results, candidates to re-check

Adegoke said the things applicants for the NIN Data Modification should note are:

“1. Single Browser and Device Access: Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used during registration. Access to your account is therefore limited to that specific browser on that particular device.

“2. NIN Record Modification: To change your NIN record, you must log in using the same browser and device originally used to register the account. Any attempt to use a different browser or device may result in access issues.

“3. Cache Clearing Warning: Clearing your browser cache will reset the browser and may lock your account. If this occurs, the account will require an unlinking process to regain access.

“4. Unlock Attempt Limit: Once your browser and device are locked, you are permitted a maximum of five (5) unlock attempt requests. Please be advised that no further requests will be processed after this limit is exceeded.”

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has repeated its warning that Nigerians should protect their personal data from unauthorized individuals or organisations.

The commission gave the warning in a statement issued by the Head, Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, against the backdrop of a fraud scheme whereby Nigerians are offered between N1,500 and N2,000 by some persons, to surrender a copy of their personal information details to them and sell the same information to some Fintech institutions for about N5000.

Expressing serious concern over the development, NIMC warned too that any National Identification Number, NIN, presented to access services must be duly verified before granting such services.

The commission urged the general public to download the NINAuth App on either Apple iOS or the Google Play Store to enjoy seamless benefits, “including but not limited to protection and security of the NIN, the power to control personal information on the NIN, and so many more!”

READ ALSO: Lagos orders psychiatric test for 18 traffic offenders

The statement reads in full:

“The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has noted with serious concern the recent statement on Nigerians selling their personal information, including that of the National Identification Number, NIN, attributed to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.

“The statement by EFCC that ‘this fraud scheme is largely driven by an army of young Nigerians offering a paltry payment of between N1500 and N2000 to their victims to make them surrender a copy of their personal information details to them and sell the same information to some Fintech Institutions for about N5000′ is not only of serious security concern but of grave consequences on the NIN holders. The NIMC wishes to state clearly that it will not be held responsible for any personal information shared by an individual directly or by proxy for the purpose of financial gain or inducement.

“Nigerians have been informed repeatedly in the past by the NIMC not to disclose their NIN to any unauthorised individual or organisation. Equally of note is that any NIN presented to access services must be duly verified before granting such services. Nigerians and service providers should note.

“Furthermore, the general public is by this notice enjoined to download the NINAuth App on either Apple iOS or the Google Play Store to enjoy seamless benefits, including but not limited to protection and security of the NIN, the power to control personal information on the NIN, and so many more!”

By RARZACK OLAEGBE

I spent hours at the driver’s license renewal centre this week. My driver’s license will expire in a week. But why did I have to endure the rigours of an endless wait? The internet was poor. The staff chorused. The payment portal would not open. The staff made it into a song. The staff grumbled because cash did not follow the transaction as ants follow sugar. Why can’t I get my driver’s license done through a platform that harmonises all government databases? Why can’t I get my international passport through this same platform?

The platform will provide access to all government services, and I can choose which service I desire. I can make a payment. Then forward the payment receipt to another platform for authentication. Does such a platform exist? Where can I apply for a driver’s license? International passport? Other government services? On one online platform? Aha! It offers no stress. No fuss. No bluffing. Instead, the government makes more revenue. But who needs another authentication platform to authenticate the National ID Number that has been authenticated? Not me!

On the one hand

I am yet to experience such a local platform. Kindly send me a link, if it exists. It will make my year. However, what we have is another platform. The National Identity Management Commission [NIMC] new service called NIN Authentication (NINAuth). It is for secure and seamless ID verification and authentication.

On the other hand

The authorised commission said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the use of the NIN Authentication for verification and authentication across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAS). What is NINAuth? NIMC said the service is the exclusive platform for all NIN-based verification. Authentication. Integration. Processes. For optimal services. Hmm…

In the long term

NIMC added that the platform has a web. API. Mobile verification. It will enhance data security. Protect privacy. Simplify access to government services. What are these services? Here is the roll call: SIM registration and replacement. International passport applications and processing. Tax filings and financial transactions. Government intervention programmes. Driver’s license renewals and other regulatory processes.

NIMC added that the platform is the official service for integration with its backend infrastructure. The commission said the platform would empower you with greater control over your personal information. “By requiring explicit consent before data is shared for Know Your Customer processes or other verifications, the platform fosters trust, transparency, and user autonomy in digital ID management.” That is NIMC’s statement.

Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the innovation would advance secure and efficient digital ID management, ensure accessibility and transparency for the ID verification system in Nigeria.

In the short term

Is this the all-in-one platform to take away our pain? When Nigerians no longer need to spend hours to renew drivers’ license or obtain international passport that will be it.

The federal government has approved the launch of the NIMC NIN Authentication for secure and seamless identity verification and authentication.

That was as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the use of NIN Authentication for verification and authentication across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.

The Head, Corporate Communication of NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, in a statement, said it was in line with the commission’s mandate of regulating a reliable National Digital Identity for citizens and legal residents to affirm their identity

According to him, the launch of the “NIN Authentication (NINAuth),” a cutting-edge suite of services that include web, API and mobile verification designed to enhance data security, protect privacy, and simplify access to government services, was part of President Tinubu, Renewed Hope Agenda on strengthening the National Identity Management System.

He explained: “The NIMC NINAuth application is the official service for integration with the commission’s backend infrastructure.

“It introduces a robust layer of protection, empowering individuals with greater control over their personal information.

“By requiring explicit consent before data is shared for Know Your Customer, KYC, processes or other verifications, the platform fosters trust, transparency, and user autonomy in digital identity management.

“With NINAuth, individuals can securely verify their identity and access key government services, including:

Sim registration and replacement

Immigration applications and passport processing

Tax filings and financial transactions

Government Intervention Programmes in various MDAs

Driver’s license renewals and other regulatory processes, etc,.

“Key Features and Benefits include:

Enhanced Security—Protects personal data from unauthorized access.

User Control—Empowers individuals with the freedom to manage their data-sharing preferences.

Seamless Access—provides a secure single sign-on solution for convenient access to services.

“This innovation reaffirms NIMC’s commitment to advancing secure and efficient digital identity management, ensuring a more accessible, transparent, and secure identity verification system in Nigeria.

“The NINAuth application provides a secure, scalable, and interoperable interface for identity verification through API integration.

“It is designed to facilitate real-time authentication of NIN records, thereby promoting effective service delivery, database harmonization, and compliance with the National Identity Policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The NINAuth service has been designated as the exclusive platform for all NIN-based verification and authentication integration processes for optimal services.

“Nigerians are required to download the NINAuth App on Google Play Store and Apple iOS App Store to use the NIN Authentication Service.

“The implementation guide and process flow of the NIMC NIN Authentication are available at https://ninauth.nimc.gov.ng.”

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has warned Nigerian against submitting their National Identification Number, NIN, to unauthorized individuals, organisations, or platforms, as the federal government and NIMC have not authorized that.

NIMC gave the warning in a statement by its Head, Corporate Communication Unit, Dr. Kayode Adegoke.

It said anyone caught doing that would be sanctioned appropriately.

The commission said the warning became necessary against the backdrop of the activities of unauthorised individuals or organisations purportedly asking for the submission of the NIN of Anambra residents in exchange for money, which it said, contravened the NIMC Act No 23, 2007, Data Protection Act, and Cyber Crime Act.

“At no time should NIN holders give out their NINs for monetary compensation. This is against the laws of the Federation. Anyone caught will be dealt with appropriately,” it said.

The commission had earlier issued a statement warning Nigerians against sharing their NIN or Data with anyone or on any fictitious sites.

The NIN it said, could only be used by the holders to access government or private sector services, and it must be verified.

The commission said it had taken necessary measures to curb the activities of the unscrupulous individuals.

NIMC urged Nigerians: “The general public is hereby advised to reach out to the Commission whenever they notice the indiscriminate collection of NIN via: nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng; 07002255646; 01923000010.”

Lagos State government in collaboration with the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office, NASSCO, has embarked on a three-day training of field personnel for update of the National Social Register, NSR, employing the National Identification Number, NIN, for efficient delivery of social intervention purposes.

The exercise tagged “Training on the integration of the NIN with the NSR update” commenced at the weekend in Ikeja.

According to the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs Olayinka Ojo, the register would “allow a unique identity to be assigned to beneficiaries on the Register in order to ensure social inclusion and transparency.”

Mrs Ojo, noting that the Lagos State Single Social Register, LASSR, had 759 Poor and Vulnerable households and 2,681,507 individuals as at February, 2025, stated the primary goals of the training exercises.

“The primary objectives of this training include but not limited to certifying the trainees who are the front-end enrolment partners with NIMC in facilitating NIN enrolment and verification; align with the federal government’s goal of linking intervention beneficiaries to their unique identities, reducing double dipping, and promoting transparency.

She added, “To promote digitalization and integration through enhanced identity management.”

The Permanent Secretary said Lagos being a sub-national is strategically positioned for this initiative which would ensure “credibility to the Register, promote transparency, accountability, facilitate beneficiaries access to interventions and enhance tracking of both vulnerable households and government expenditure in the social protection space.”

The State Coordinator, National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Lagos, Mr Olumide Aremu, stated that the agency was not new to sharing data with other government parastatals and corporate bodies just as he stressed the impact of data harmonization for tracking and impact of interventions.

His words: “This helps the government to analyse and track the exact impact of programmes on the citizens. It will enable the government to go back and see what we are not doing right, what are we doing right, what are the exact benefits of the government programme – is it actually getting to the right people, what are the impacts of all these processes so that they can improve on it?

“This is not the first time there has been integration. We had with the banks and with immigration, which is still ongoing, with BVN and NIN.”

He noted the uniqueness of the exercise being for the vulnerable, getting to the grassroots for data collection, while he assured that the process would be seamless with logistics of systems under constant checks and readiness of all the centres in all the local governments and LCDAs for easier integration.

In her remark, National Coordinator, National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office, NASSCO, Mrs Funmi Olotu, titled “the power of data for Social Inclusion”, emphasized the importance of engaging NIN enrollment instruments in collecting accurate records for efficient delivery of social intervention to the populaces.

Represented by Dr. Daniel Amba, Manager of the National Grievance Redress Mechanism, GRM, said, “The use of NIMC devices for enrollment, Kobo Collect for data collection, and the subsequent updating of household information would ensure that we capture the correct data and provide the necessary support to those who needed it most.

“The State Social Register, SSR, plays a vital role in our social safety-net programmes, serving as a single, unified database for targeting and interventions. By integrating the NIN into the social single register, SSR, we will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of our targeting mechanisms, ensuring that the most vulnerable households receive the support they need,” she said.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, FMAFS, is introducing the National Identity Number, NIN, enabled farmer registry and Government 2 people, G2P, card initiative.

The ministry is carrying out the project in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

According to the Director of Information, FMAFS, Dr Joel Oruche, and Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, Dr Kayode Adegoke, in a statement issued on Thursday, the project is designed to address the ministry’s immediate challenges of identity and authentication, required to deliver government services efficiently and accurately.

The initiative was said to be in alignment with the government’s commitment to improve transparency, efficiency and ensuring inclusivity under the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, of which food security is a primary objective.

It was also said to aim at eradicating the challenges of FMAFS in efficiently delivering well-intended government programmes to the targeted citizens.

The farmer registry and card ecosystem

The spokespersons said the ministry, guided by President Tinubu’s circular on the use of National Identification Number, NIN, by all MDAs in the provision of government services to beneficiaries, had partnered with NIMC to leverage the National Identity Management System to power the Ministry’s farmer registry by the linkage of the NIN and attendant biometric identity data of each farmer to their farmland, as well as all necessary supporting data relating to that farmer, including the size of the holding, type of crops or livestock.

READ ALSO: FG to Emir Sanusi: We don’t need your approval for our policies

They said connecting the NIN-backed registry to the G2P card would allow for provision of targeted and ring-fenced aid to the farmers and other recipients of government benefits under the FMAFS programmes.

The G2P card ecosystem, the described as an initiative that allows for the issuance of NIN-enabled cards by Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and enables the use of the card’s frontend by these MDAs for their respective programmes.

“The key feature of the ecosystem is a biometrics card with multiple wallets that can provide verifiable identification and also process transactions without internet connectivity, allowing the Ministry to support beneficiaries in the most remote locations. The card is unique to each citizen, and every Nigerian and legal resident is eligible to obtain it, banked or unbanked. The G2P card will be owned by and personalised to each MDA that adopts its usage,” the statement reads in part.

It was explained that by adopting the card, the ministry was to uniquely identify all farmers, provide multiple agriculture services through the card in a manner that eliminates risks and fraud and also provide end to end visibility within the agriculture value chain thus enabling scalability.

They said the agriculture services to be provided through the card included farmer financing, input distribution, farmland mapping linked to identity, extension services monitoring and evaluation and agency banking as well as multiple types of third party services.

The statement reads further: “Within this framework, NIMC will provide the foundational identity ecosystem to FMAFS, who as the owner of both the farmer registry and G2P card scheme will provide government services via the issued G2P cards, tailored to the needs of the farmers supported by the Ministry at the national and sub-national levels.

“The G2P card has a large capacity in-card chip that stores beneficiary identity, know your customer (KYC), picture, and fingerprints. In addition, it has two applets and several wallets dedicated to multiple types of programmes, which provides needed flexibility and channels for multiple interventions to be implemented against the same unique identity. This flexibility is required to address infrastructure challenges limiting identity verification and digital evidence of beneficiary access when implementing government programmes.

“The G2P biometric cards are processed through a bespoke but interoperable biometrics Point of Sale (POS) acceptance device, which requires biometrics to access and operate. This technological approach allows the Ministry to better deliver services and programmes in any location regardless of infrastructure challenges. The card will operate as a digital wallet/ prepaid card and it is tailored for government transactions such as subsidies, loans, welfare disbursement, pensions and other activities carried out by FMAFS.

“NIMC’s role is to provide the ecosystem with foundational biometric identity in the NIN to ensure that the card and its attendant benefits are linked securely and accurately to the beneficiary and the beneficiary only. FMAFS retains their statutory rights and ownership of data generated.

“With the G2P ecosystem, any programme implemented by the Ministry can now be administered independently and showcased through digitally enabled dashboards displaying key data on how each programmes have been efficiently implemented or otherwise.”

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has cleared all outstanding payments owed to the Front End Partners, FEPs, for all enrolment that successfully hit the database and generated the National Identification Numbers, NINs.

The Head, Corporate Communications Unit, NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, made this known in a statement he issued on Friday.

He noted that the FEPs were contracted in 2021 by the erstwhile administration through the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to scale up enrolment for NIN.

However, he said, the FEPs were only paid for one year of enrollment activities.

He explained that consequent upon the resumption of Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote as the NIMC DG/CEO, she promised to clear the outstanding owed to the FEPs.

As part of the process of paying the outstanding money, he said, all the FEPs were subjected to a revalidation exercise to ensure they met internationally acceptable standards, adhered to compliance, and followed best ethical practices.

READ ALSO: Akpabio assures Code of Conduct Bureau of Senate’s support

After the revaluation exercise, Adegoke said, the NIMC, with the support of the Identity for Development, ID4D, and the World Bank, began the process for the payment of the outstanding NIN enrolment money owed to the FEPs.

The outstanding money, he said, was not part of the World Bank-funded NIN Enrolment project.

The NIN Enrolment between 2021 and 2024 by the FEPs was a stop-gap measure approved by the erstwhile Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to scale up NIN enrolment pending the commencement of the World Bank/ID4D project, he said.

According to him, the NIMC through the ID4D and the World Bank, subsequently, paid all the outstanding money after the thorough evaluation.

“I extend our deepest appreciation to the entire leadership of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, for your unwavering commitment to enhancing the welfare and operational efficiency of enrollment partners, particularly the proactive efforts in addressing and offsetting the backlog of payments for 2022 to date. This decisive action not only fosters trust and accountability but also strengthens the collaboration between NIMC and its partners, Phillip M Adekunle, MD/CEO, Knowledge Square Ltd.”

Engr. Coker-Odusote expressed her gratitude to the FEPs and the commission’s stakeholders for their support and dedication in populating the National Identity Database (NIDB).

She reiterated her commitment to ensuring that the commission continued to provide the necessary support to build a credible, reliable, and world-class identity database.

The World Bank and ID4D’s valuable support to NIMC is well appreciated, she said.
