The National Assembly says the Data Protection Bill will be passed into law within 30 days of receiving it from the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Information Communication Technology, ICT, and Cybercrime, Yakubu Oseni, made the promise at a one-day sensitisation workshop on data protection organised for members of the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday.

According to Oseni, since the Federal Government has created the Nigerian Data Protection Bureau, NDPB, for data protection, there is a need to enact a law to guide its operations.

“I want to assure you that as National Assembly members, we will make sure that we do justice to the bill. We need to give legal backing to the agency.

“We are waiting for them to bring the bill and we will ensure it gets to the president within one month,” he said.

According to the Senator, this is legislation that is supposed to have seen the light of the day since 2019.

“But unfortunately when the bill was sent to the president it was not assented to.

“Now that it is coming from the executive side, I believe that it will see the light of the day.

“This is an agency set up to protect the data of individuals and organisations,” he said.

READ ALSO: SGF stresses need to curb data breaches in Nigeria

According to him, your data is your property, and before somebody has access to your data in any form he or she has to seek your consent.

Also, the Chairman, House Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, Abubakar Lado, gave the agency assurance that the House of Representatives would expedite action on the bill.

“As National Assembly, we are committed to the well-being of Nigerians.

“We want to assure the agency that anytime the bill comes to us we will ensure its speedy passage.”

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, who spoke virtually, harped on the importance of the bill to data privacy and confidentiality.

“The event is to sensitise our National Assembly members before the executive bill is presented to the National Assembly so that they can block all the gaps.

“This bill will ensure the privacy and confidentiality of the data of our citizens,” he said.

The National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of NDPB, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, while responding to questions said the bill would be ready by October.

Olatunji earlier said that the agency had created over 8,000 jobs by certifying over 5,000 data protection experts.

“By October we will send the bill to the minister who will forward it to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, for it to be sent as an Executive bill to the National Assembly.

“Our belief is that the bill will be passed before the end of this year,” he said.

The Project Coordinator, Nigeria Digital Identification for Development, ID4D, Mr Solomon Odole, said all relevant stakeholders needed to be carried along to avoid hiccups with the bill.

“We need to carry all relevant stakeholders along, such as National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Legislations and others.

“We know that if they are not carried along the bill may suffer the same fate as the previous one,” he said.

Mr Olumide Osundolire from Banwo and Ighodalo Law Firm, who gave an overview of the current data protection landscape in Nigeria, highlighted the history and development of privacy and data protection.

The Police Command in Zamfara, says it has rescued 24 victims abducted by bandits at Gurgurawa community in Bungudu local government area of the state.

The spokesman of the Command, SP Muhammad Shehu, confirmed the development at a news conference on Saturday in Gusau.

Shehu said the victims, including a seven-month-old baby were rescued after a fierce gun battle between the security operatives and the bandits.

“On 18th February, 2022 at about 2300hrs, police tactical operatives attached to 42 PMF Squadron Gusau, on Anti–Banditry Operations in the area received a distress call that armed bandits in large numbers invaded the village and abducted some members of the community.

“Receiving the information, the tactical operatives in collaboration with the vigilante in the area, swung into action and mobilised to the location for an extensive search and rescue operation.

“On sighting the operatives, the hoodlums engaged them to a serious gun battle that lasted for an hour,” he said.

Shehu said the bandits abandoned the victims at the scene as a result of the superior firepower of the security operatives.

He said that 10 of the 24 victims had been reunited with their families in the village and 13 others were in police custody before handing over to their families.

According to him, one of the victims is receiving treatment at the hospital, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Ayuba Elkana, commended the resilience of the operatives and enjoined them to sustain the tempo.

“The commissioner assured members of the public of the police commitment to end the lingering security challenges bedeviling the state.”

Burkina Faso on Saturday stunned the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia by a lone goal to progress to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Cameroon 2021.

Dango Ouattara’s goal on the stroke of halftime was enough for Burkina Faso to beat Tunisia at the Stade Roumdé Adjia in Garoua.

Ouattara, who was sent off in the closing stages scored on the stroke of halftime to give Kamou Malo’s side the victory against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

The Stallions, who were without their talisman and captain Bertrand Traore, started brightly at the Omnisports Roumde stadium in Garoua.

The Burkinabe controlled possession in the opening exchanges with Steeve Yago and Ibrahim Toure pulling the strings in midfield.

Cyrille Bayala had the first opening of the closely contested match when he found space on the left to shoot straight at Bechir Said in the Tunisian goal midway through the first half.

The Carthage Eagles were denied by Koffi on 26 minutes when he dived to his left to save Wahbi Khazri’s fierce free kick.

The two sides continued to cancel each other in the midfield, while they tried to break on the counter.

A defensive mistake in the Burkinabe box almost allowed Jaziri to score when he charged down Soumaila Ouattara.

Dango broke the deadlock with a neat finish from a swift counter attack.

Ibrahim Toure played him through on goal and he cut inside before firing past Bechir.

The Tunisians returned after the break with more determination as they searched for the equaliser.

Kouakou Koffi pulled another brilliant save from a set piece to keep the lead.

Substitute Ali Maaloul, volleyed a sumptuous strike but Koffi was equal to it.

The Stallions were reduced to 10-men later on when goal scorer Dango was sent off for swinging an arm on a Tunisian defender.

The Burkinabe held on to progress to the semis of the tournament and they will meet the winner of the encounter between Senegal and Equatorial Guinea.

No fewer than five people have died while several other persons sustained varying degree of injuries as a kerosene-laden tank exploded at popular Kubwa Village Market in Abuja.

The incident happened, Friday night, at the junction leading to the L.E.A Primary School, Jaji Street, and few metres away from St Luke Catholic Church.

When the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, arrived at the scene, bodies of the victims were being evacuated by the combined team of officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and Fire Service, among others.

The inferno, which gutted the adjoining shops in the area, had been extinguished by the Fire Service men.

An eye-witness, Mr Chima Nnamdi, told NAN that the sad event occurred at about 7:15pm.

Nnamdi said he had, so far, counted at least five bodies, some of which were burnt beyond recognition.

He said several other people, who sustained injuries, had been taken to Kubwa General Hospital.

He said that the kerosene might be an adulterated product.

Another eye-witness, who simply identified herself as Jennifer, said the kerosene seller and her two children also died in the fire incident.

The Kubwa Police Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Ndagi Shebe, who confirmed the incident, debunked the rumour that it was a bomb explosion.

“You can see it yourself,” he said as he flashed a torchlight to the kerosene tank which allegedly caused the explosion.

According to him, it was kerosene surface tank that exploded.

“That is what brought the inferno,” he added.

He said though he could not tell if the kerosene an adulterated one, the senior police officer said four dead bodies had so far been evacuated from the scene.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, DSP Josephine Adeh, however, told NAN in a telephone chat that she was yet to be briefed about the sad occurrence as at the time of filing the report.

Two youngsters have been hit by stray bullets during a confrontation between customs men and petrol smugglers at Seme border in Lagos State.

The two boys – Hunsu Taiwo, 12, and Ganjo Henry, 10, were playing in Sokenu Compound of Seme when they were hit by customs bullets on Friday.

The injured victims, however, survived after receiving treatment at the Customs clinic at Seme border.

Confirming the incident, Customs spokesman in Seme, Hussaini Abdullahi, said the two boys were hit by stray bullets at the back and ankle.

Abdullahi said that the incident happened during a confrontation with smugglers who were trying to smuggle petrol to neighboring Benin Republic.

“On Friday, July 3, at about 5p.m, a joint patrol team of command, based on credible intelligence went on an operation along Seme Carpenter Village and identified a hideout used by some unpatriotic elements to stockpile petrol for onward smuggling to Benin Republic.

“In an effort to evacuate the said item from the scene, some unscrupulous elements launched a vicious attack and aggressively advanced towards the scene of the seizure with assorted dangerous weapons with a desirous effort to set the place ablaze.

“Considering the volatility of the seized items and the fact that all efforts short of using force to halt the mob from advancing towards the scene proved abortive, officers were left with no option than to use their firearms in order to defend themselves and avoid the envisaged catastrophe.

“However, verifiable information later received indicated that two young innocent boys were injured by stray bullets at back and ankle,” he said.

The customs spokesman said the boys were rushed to Customs clinic for proper medical intervention and fortunately the result came out with no major damages.

“This gave room for prompt treatment of the patients at Customs facility and were consequently discharged strictly based on medical advice.

“On this note, the command wish to register its unreserved displeasure with this unfortunate incident.

“As a responsible and responsive service, we are working round the clock to partner with the family by providing all the necessary support to cushion the effect of this tragedy,” he said.

Abdullahi, however, said the renewed hostility by smugglers and their accomplices would never be a distraction in discharging its statutory responsibilities.

He promised that smugglers would always meet their waterloo with no breathing space in Seme command.

The governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has said that he never thought he could live beyond the age of 30.

That was because he had thought he would join the Army, go to war and get killed.

According to him, despite the efforts to join the Army, however, he was not enlisted.

The governor made the remark on the occasion of the thanksgiving service to mark his 52nd birthday.

He was 52 on Christmas day.

The governor who used the occasion to express his determination to serve the people of the state, also declared that he would not mind breaking some toes if it would aid his determination to serve the ordinary people of Oyo State.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the governor made the declaration at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan.

According to Governor Makinde, his determination to render service to the ordinary people informed his decision to declare free and qualitative education in the state adding that education remained the surest way to lift people out of poverty.

The governor said: “If I can be who I am today, then no child should be left behind in Oyo State. And that explains my passion for education. Once we give education to our children, the sky is their starting point.”

He stated that he never thought he would live up to 30 and that he had remained grateful to God every year he had lived beyond 30.

“I thought I would join the Army, fight for my country and possibly get killed and that may be the end of the story. So, for me, every year I have lived above 30 years is like a bonus,” he said.

The governor who maintained that he was getting more mature at 52 appreciated everyone who had made an impact on his life.

He expressed appreciation to the people of Oyo State, without whom he said he would not have been able to achieve anything in the last six months of his tenure as governor.

He said: “There is nothing really much to say; today is my birthday and I am getting mature. Quite frankly, I never thought I would live up to 30. I have a friend here and every time we were talking, we always thought that we would go into the Army, fight, get killed and that would be the end of our story.

“We actually went for recruitment into the Army but were rejected. But today, we are seeing Seyi Makinde at 52 and all I can do is to give thanks to God.

“When we were going through the electioneering period, people said the political terrain here is rough, and I could get killed. So, I looked at myself and said that I could take the risk since I am more than 30 because I had always believed that anything I have after 30 would be like a bonus to me.

“That is why without looking back, I will continue to serve the people of Oyo State, without minding whose toe I will step on. Truth is, I will break some toes if I really have to and will continue to fight for the ordinary people of this state.”

He added: “My story won’t be complete without all of you and I thank you all. Today is the first time I am celebrating my birthday like this. In the area I grew up, the first time they would bring a cake for somebody’s birthday was when the last child of my family, Iyabo, celebrated her birthday. My parents kept delivering male children until they got to the 5th one.

“I remember after the delivery of the fifth child, who happened to be a female, my mother, in the labour room, was shouting for everyone to hear that she had a female child. For her, it was special treatment.

“Some of us who stayed in the area where I grew up, we used to eat in a communal setting. So, when they brought the cake for her birthday, it was strange to us and we suddenly rushed it. My mum cried that day. That was the kind of environment where I grew up.

“So, if I can be who I am today, then no child should be left behind in Oyo State. And that explains my passion for education. Once we give education to our children, the sky is their starting point.”

The governor, who singled out the people of the state for appreciation for the support they have continued to offer to his government, further said: “For the people of Oyo State, I want to thank you because we would not have achieved anything without you. People have been commending us that there have been changes within six months we came into government.

“I want the people to know that it is not only Seyi Makinde that is doing these but all of us. And you know that decisions are always taken by consensus. We discuss, thrash out issues and superior arguments always win. So, in 2020, I look forward to more robust argument, discussions, and alignments.

“This time last year, I didn’t know I will become the Governor of Oyo State but I prayed to God during my birthday and the last cross over night that if my wish to serve the people of Oyo State would be to their benefit, let it be so and God answered that prayer. So, I want to pray today again that all our wishes, in the coming year 2020, God will make them manifest.”

In his sermon, the Archbishop of Ibadan Province, Most Revd Segun Okubadejo, who spoke on the topic, “A gift for Christmas,” encouraged Christians to gift Christ the best of their thoughts, actions, and deeds.

He said: “The gift Christ is asking of us today are the gifts he has given through finished work of redemption and the gifts are not for Christ’s benefits, they are for our benefits.

“Today, I am telling you children of God here celebrating Christ’s birth, the first gift Christ wants from us is love. He has deposited that love in us and he is asking for the same love. Love to God and to our neighbours.

“We all know what lack of love causes in the home, the society. Lack of love is disturbing us. In the political circle, lack of love continues to cause crisis. So, today, Christ is asking for the gift of love.

“The second gift he is asking is that of humility in place of pride. Pride has turned the society and a lot of people into something else.

“Today, Christ is asking for the gift of doing good deeds,” Okubadejo stated.
