With a growing population and infrastructure deficit, no amount of money is too much to revamp Nigeria’s development challenges, President Muhammadu Buhari said Sunday in Niamey, Niger Republic.

‘‘We need all the support we can get on infrastructure because the oil will not last forever,’’ President Buhari told Dr. Mansur Muhtar, Vice President, Islamic Development Bank (IDB), during a bilateral meeting on the margins of the AU Summit.

President Buhari thanked the IDB for ongoing interventions in agriculture, trade and investment, rural development and food security in Nigeria, noting that the county would appreciate more support in other critical sectors.

Dr. Muhtar commended Nigeria for signing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement, saying it was good the country is now on board the trade deal.

While congratulating President Buhari on a successful outing at the AU Summit, the IDB Vice President pledged the Bank’s continued support to development efforts in the country.

He said the President of the IDB would like to visit Nigeria to commission the Bank’s new office, adding that Nigeria was a regional hub for the Islamic Development Bank Group.

The Kaduna State Government, on Wednesday, reviewed the 24-hour curfew it imposed following the religious violence that broke out in the state last Thursday.

No fewer than 55 people were killed.

The curfew was imposed on Sunday as a result of reports of a continuation of the violence in some parts of the state.

However, after a review of the situation, the government announced that the people of the state could move freely from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Effective tomorrow, Thursday, 25th October 2018, residents of Kaduna are free to pursue their legitimate business from 6am to 5pm,” the government said.

The statement reads further: “The heads of security agencies reported significant progress in restoring calm and commended residents for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during the four-hour relaxation of the curfew in parts of Kaduna yesterday. The Government is grateful to our citizens for their cooperation while withstanding the unintended convenience.

“Government expects normal banking and other services to resume, and markets to open as normal as from tomorrow. The security agencies will remain vigilant and continue to protect residents. Intensive surveillance of known pockets of potential trouble is also continuing, by troops on the ground and by helicopter patrols.

“It is obligatory on residents to scrupulously observe the night-time curfew hours, to keep the peace and to cooperate with the security agencies to keep our state safe. Community leaders are enjoined to ensure that hoodlums and other potential threats to peace are promptly reported to the security agencies.

“Government therefore urges all residents to report any suspicious activity to the security agencies and to refrain from spreading rumours and unverified information. The Security Council advises that there will be no hesitation to reimpose a 24-hour curfew in the event of any breach of peace.”

The incompetence of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has been exposed through the primaries of the party conducted recently.

The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, made this remark on Wednesday in reaction to the claim that he led some members of the party in an alleged plot to pass a vote of no confidence on Oshiomhole.

Akeredolu, who described his accusers as mere opportunists said the primaries conducted by the party was a mere charade.

He said his opposition to the candidacy of Oshiomhole for the post of the national chairman had been justified by the irregularities he said characterized the primaries.

He however said his support for the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to office in 2019 was unshaken.

It would be recalled that Akeredolu has been cross with the leadership of his party over the choice of Senator Robert Boroffice as the representative of Ondo North Senatorial District of Ondo State in the National Assembly.

His preferred aspirant was said to have been turned down to allow Boroffice continue his stay in the Senate.

Akeredolu, in a statement by his Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties and Strategy, Doyin Odebowale, said only sycophants would fail to see the shortcomings of the Oshiomhole leadership.

The statement reads in part: “He did not hide his opposition to Mr Oshiomole’s aspiration for the simple reason that the leadership of a party, especially the one just emerging from a merger, should distance itself from egregious and inherently destructive narcissism.

“Recent events seem to justify this position as prescient. Only sycophants will fail to see the obvious. Mr President would not have expressed worries over the crises in the Party if everything had gone on smoothly.

“The handlers of the mob strive in vain to set the President against certain government functionaries considered antagonistic to their pernicious scheme for dominance.

“Their devious plot to outsmart those perceived as opposing their expansionist tendency compelled them to take desperate measures. Anyone endowed with an attitude of sobriety should have seen the need for calm.

“Rather than retrace their steps and display genuine contrition, their desperation pushes them to embrace measures capable of not only hurting the Party, but, regrettably, the President, whom they pretend to love so much.

“Those who collected varying and humongous amounts as fees from aspirants during the last grandiose charade called primaries and submitted names dictated to them by a cabal, notorious for capturing political power for unbridled pillage, should be bold to explain their real motives to the people. They should be honest enough to deal with the issues.”

Recall that on Sunday, Oshiomhole’s Chief Press Secretary, Simon Ebegbulem, in Abuja, accused some stakeholders of plotting to remove his principal through a vote of no confidence.

Ebegbulem said the sin of his boss was his refusal to be dictated to and act contrary to the rules.

He denied the allegation that the action of his boss had been responsible for the division in the APC.

According to him, rather, the party had continued to increase in its fortune which would manifest more in the 2019 elections.

The Chairman, Resort Group, Dr. Wale Babalakin, has berated the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, for publishing the names of his companies on its debtors list.

He described the action as irresponsible, claiming that the Federal Government was the one owing them.

The reaction was issued by Babalakin’s lawyer, Wale Akoni (SAN), in a statement.

“It was irresponsible of AMCON to publish the names of my clients on its list of debtors,” he said.

Babalakin, in his argument stated that if the amount of N49 billion allegedly owed by his company was deducted from a judgment credit of N132 billion, which he got against the Federal Government, he would still be owed a whopping N83 billion.

The statement by Babalakin’s lawyer reads: “On April 5, 2012, the Federal High Court, in FHC/ABJ/CS/50/2009 – Bi-Courtney Limited vs Attorney-General of the Federation – ordered that whatever debt was outstanding to any federal agency by Bi-Courtney and companies related to it should be deducted from the sum of over N132bn which the Federal Government owes Bi-Courtney.

“If N49bn, the sum allegedly owed by Bi-Courtney and companies associated with it, is subtracted from N132bn, my clients still have a judgment credit of N83bn, which the Federal Government has yet to pay.

“There was another court judgment on December 3, 2015, against the Federal Government in a case involving Resort International Limited, one of the companies associated with Bi-Courtney, in which the FG was ordered to pay the firm N55bn at an interest rate of 17 per cent per annum, an interest rate of 17 per cent per annum, an amount that is now in excess of N100bn.

“It was irresponsible of AMCON to publish the names of my clients on its list of debtors and I urge the media to beware of this misguided behaviour and disdain for the rule of law.”

AMCON had, on Monday, released the list of companies which had failed to negotiate successfully with it.

They are about 105 names and top on the list are Ifeanyi Uba’s Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited, NICON Investments Limited owned by Jimoh Ibrahim and Bi-Courtney Limited owned by Wale Babalakin.

Also on the list among others are Josephdam & Sons Limited owned by the Kuteyi family and Tinapa Business Resort of Cross River State Government.

The senators will resume on November 6.

During the break, only plenary will not hold.

The different committees are expected to function during the break, Senate President Bukola Saraki disclosed on Wednesday.

“It is only plenary session that is being suspended. We expect our committees to carry out oversight in this period,” he said.

He stated further: “When we debated the Eurobond, there were a lot of questions on implementation and utilisation of those loans. But because of the expediency and the demand from the executive that we approve those loans, we did it but with the understanding that our committees will quickly go and do oversight in MDAs to see that those funds have been properly utilised.

“And also budget implementation of 2018, and the poverty social intervention programme that we raised. So, I will like all our committees that during this period, to carry out the necessary oversight so that we can report when we do resume back to plenary. The committees will be meeting till 6th of November.”

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has been granted bail in the sum of N50 million.

The bail is also subject to the provision of surety with three years tax clearance.

Fayose’s International Passports is also to be submitted to the court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday dragged Fayose to court over alleged financial scam.

No fewer than 11 charges were filed against him.

He was accused of involvement in a ₦1.2 billion scam.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

He had since remained in the custody of the EFCC.

It would be recalled that Fayose submitted himself to the EFCC on October 16 shortly after his tenure as governor of Ekiti State expired.

The submission was in fulfillment of his promise to do so immediately he left office, having realised that he was being probed for alleged corruption.

His immunity as a governor could not allow the anti-graft body to prosecute him while he was in office.

He was dramatic about his visit to the EFCC office when he spotted a t-shirt with the inscription: EFCC, I am here.

Agriculture is a very good option for Nigeria in its bid for a secure economic future and self-sustenance, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, University of Lagos, Dr. Babatunde Wasiu Adeoye, has declared.

He however said that the agricultural sector of the country was faced with numerous challenges that needed to be tackled.

Adeoye made the declaration on Tuesday in a paper he delivered at the WorldStage Economic Summit 2018 with the theme: New Sources of Economic Strength to Make the future Happen.

The event was held at the Event Centre of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Lagos.

He also listed investment in tourism and solid minerals as other ways out of the nation’s economic woes.

Represented by Onyebuchi Iwegbu, Adeoye said: “The agricultural sector remains a viable option for Nigeria in which it can produce her total demand internally without necessarily importing any of her final produce.”

He listed the challenges confronting the agricultural sector as including poor power supply, poor and limited storage facilities, bad road networks and illegal food importation.

He also identified as major problems, inadequate market information on availability of products, illegal acquisition of land, inadequate skilled personnel, poor irrigation system, and high cost of acquiring processing equipment and agrochemicals.

He said to find solutions to the challenges would amount to taking Nigeria out of the woods.

He cited the example of Brazil which in 2012, enhanced the value chain in agricultural production.

According to him, the result was the generation of 16 million new jobs.

The country, he said, also became a producer of global agro processed commodities which included sugar, ethanol and oranges.

“Their value chain developed due to the improvement in the availability of seeds, soil fertility, better use and provision of technology and finally, improvement in research and innovations in the sector,” he said.

He added that the tourism sector was another gold mine waiting to be explored.

“Tourism has the potentials of stimulating output and as such act as a strong force to stimulating and sustaining growth,” he said.

He added: “Nigeria’s tourism contributed about $1.5 billion, a hope to anchor on in terms of future output expansion sector dependants. For the sector to become a centre of attraction and growth driver, several actions must be taken by relevant stakeholders in achieving this.”

He said with serious investment in technology, hotels could better market their services and tourist centres could effectively enhance their businesses.
