All Progressives Congress national stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, as an icon and dependable leader he respects, admires and often looks up to for guidance and direction.

Tinubu made the remarks on the occasion of the 75 years birthday of Smith.

He said Smith was a patriot and statesman who had contributed immensely to the unity and togetherness of Nigeria.

He said he often looked up to Alhaji Smith for guidance and direction.

In a congratulatory statement issued by his Media Office on Saturday and signed by Mr. Tunde Rahman, Asiwaju Tinubu said: “Warm congratulations to former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Adeola Smith, on this occasion of his 75th birthday.

“Alhaji Smith is a statesman and a patriot. He worked relentlessly and sacrificed for the unity and togetherness of this country.

“His dedication and commitment to selfless service engendered his rise to the pinnacle of the police career as Inspector General.

“It is no surprise that even in retirement, Alhaji Smith was again tapped to serve as Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

“As an icon and dependable leader, I relate to him with respect and admiration and often look up to him for guidance and direction.

“I believe his simplicity, humility, perseverance, industry, integrity, honesty, and modest lifestyle are attributes worthy of emulation by the younger generation.

“As he clocks 75, my prayer is that God Almighty grant him more years, protect and bless him with good health and abundance of grace. Amin.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki has been barred by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, from participating in the Edo State governorship primary on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

This is according to a court paper that followed the suit filed by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama who is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the party.

The court barred Obaseki from participating in the primary based on the position that he did not purchase his form for the contest within the original date stipulated for that purpose.

It would be recalled that Obaseki purchased the form after he defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the PDP and he was granted a waiver to contest the election.

Besides, Ogbeide-Ihama challenged the validity of Obaseki’s certificate

PDP is billed to hold its primary on Thursday, June 25.

The governorship election is scheduled to hold on September 19, 2020.

Obaseki is expected to challenge the verdict of the court barring him from participating in the PDP primary.

Germany qualified for an eighth consecutive quarter-final appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup by beating the Super Falcons 3-0 at Stade des Alpes in Grenoble on Saturday.

The Germans were favourites to win the Round of 16 clash, and it was further evident with 60 per cent possession and 12 shots in total during the game.

The two-times champions duly lived up to their game plan with a 20th minute goal from Alexandra Popp as the striker made her 100th appearance for the German side.

The African champions struggled to keep themselves alive in the game which had 17,988 spectators in attendance.

But a foul by Evelyn Nwabuoku soon resulted in a penalty kick, thanks to the VAR which spotted the foul.

Sara Daebritz scored from the penalty kick spot to record her third goal of the tournament in the 27th minute, with the goal further helping Germany to keep Nigeria at bay.

The Falcons had a chance to appear on the score sheet five minutes into the second half through a substitute Rasheedat Ajibade cross.

But striker Desire Oparanozie did not in time to place the ball at the back of the empty net.

The Europeans eliminated the chance of a possible comeback for the African side as Lea Schuller benefitted from an error from Halimat Ayinde in the 82nd minute to seal victory.

It was however not altogether a bad day for the Falcons as defender Onome Ebi gained a new African record.

She became the first African player to record 14 appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Germany will face either Sweden or Canada in the quarter-finals on June 29.

Nigeria has the highest number of the out-of-school children in sub-Saharan African with an estimation of 13.2 million.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, made this known on Thursday at the launch of Better Education Service Delivery for All, BESDA, in Ibadan.

He however noted that the government was strengthening the quality of basic education in Nigeria to confront factors that denied the children access to Basic Education.

Malam Adamu, represented by the Director, Basic Secondary Education in the Ministry, Dr. Lami Amodu, commended the World Bank for initiating BESDA and the provision of a total sum of $611 million to support the Nigerian Government in strengthening Universal Basic Education as well as addressing the first pillar of the Ministerial Strategic Plan (MSP) 2016 – 2019 on out-of-school children.

“It is gratifying that Oyo State is the second among the 17 states that have successfully commenced the implementation process.

“I am indeed very delighted over the bold step taken by Governor Ajimobi for being the second out of 17 states covered by BESDA to formally launch the programme. This is a clear demonstration of Governor Ajimobi’s quality leadership and his personal commitment to education as well as the passion to revatilise our education sector in order to develop the abundant human capital of the state,” the minister said.

Malam Adamu explained that BESDA was a programme that would result in better life of all children as the cardinal objective was to increase equitable access for out of school children, improve literacy and strengthen accountability for results at the basic education level in the focus states.

He added that ensuring the out-of-school children were back to school and learning would not be only a moral and legal obligation, but also a productive investment that would guarantee the future of children and ensure that their rights were protected as enshrined in the Childs Right Act 2003.

In his address, the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi said that the present administration in the state had done a credible directional road-map to guide the operation of all stakeholders in the education sector.

He noted that the State Government had also spent huge amount of resources with a view to ensuring quantitative and qualitative education service delivery in the state.

Senator Ajimobi said: “It is worthy to note that our government has not defaulted in the provision of matching grants for the provision of infrastructural facilities to enhance basic education delivery in the state. We commend the FG and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for ensuring the quality education at all levels. We cherish and consider a great privilege and wish to assure the Federal Government of Nigeria that the state will put in place all necessary mechanism to ensure the successful implementation of BESDA.”

The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, said that the commission would continue to evolve revolutionary strategies towards a total overhaul of the Basic Education delivery system by focusing on the paradigm shift from mere inputs-based to result based, stressing that the Commission was investing very hugely on data generation, analyses and reporting by repackaging some of the statutory mandates for better results.

In her welcome address, the Executive Chairman of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs. Aderonke Makanjuola stated that neglecting Out-Of-School Children (OOSC) would deny them their fundamental rights and jeopardise the country’s pursuit of her home-grown technological development and economic transformation, urging that all hands must therefore be on deck to bring the OOSC back to school.

In his goodwill message, the representative of Association of National Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPPS, and Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Oyo State Chapter, Mr. Babajide Emmanuel, said that BESDA was a welcome and laudable development, stating that the programme would take the OOSC children back to school.

Speaking at the occasion, the State Chairman of Parents Teachers Association, PTA, Comrade Toki Abayomi, said that the PTA in the state had set up a task force to deal with students roaming about, warning that parents and teachers of students found wanting would also be dealt with.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Musa Abaji as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The appointment followed the advice of the National Judicial Commission, NJC.

Senate President Bukola Saraki made the appointment known on Wednesday when he read the letter to the National Assembly to that effect by the president.

“In line with 1999 constitution upon the advice of the National Judicial Council, I hereby refer for confirmation the appointment of Justice Musa Abaji as the Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“While hoping that this is expeditiously considered by the Senate, accept the assurances of my highest regard,” the letter read.

Meanwhile, the president refused to give assent to the Institute of Chartered Biochemist and Molecular Biology of Nigeria Bill 2018.

He gave the reason for the decision in a letter to the National Assembly.

According to him, giving assent would infringe on the mandate of the National University Commission and the National Board for Technology Education.

The letter reads: “Pursuant of section 68(4) of the constitution, I hereby convey to the Senate the decision on the 5th November 2018 to decline presidential assent to the Institute of Chartered Biochemist and Molecular Biology of Nigeria bill 2018 recently passed by the National Assembly for the following reasons;

“A. The provisions of section 13(3) to give the chartered biochemist and molecular biology power to approve academic program and even close down programs in tertiary institutions will infringe on our mandate of the National University Commission and the National Board for Technology Education.

“B. There are certain drafting and administrative issues in the bill, including the failure in section 13(8), 14 and 22(2) to designate a chairman for both the practice and publicity committee and or specific process for how a chairman should emerge for either of the education, practice and publicity committees.

“This can lead to confusion in the administration of the council.”
