Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) came out on top 2-1 in a tight tussle with Marseille in Sunday’s Classique, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe securing the bragging rights.

All three goals were scored before half-time in a match that was far from being a classic between Ligue 1’s top two teams.

Duje Caleta-Car had cancelled out Neymar’s opener, before Mbappe struck from the penalty kick spot to restore parity.

Marseille had what they thought was an equaliser disallowed by VAR later on.

The win maintains PSG’s strong form after Mauricio Pochettino’s side won their previous two fixtures 5-1 and 6-1.

It moves them closer to putting the finishing touches to regaining the Ligue 1 title.

If marriage is run the way God the Initiator had ordained it from the beginning, there would not be need for separation or divorce. Human failure to imbibe the culture of love, tolerance, patience and forgiveness upon which relationships are built, engenders hostility and bitterness which do manifest as abuse and violence in marital relationship.

Divorce found its way into our marital lexicon because of human attitudinal inadequacies and character flaws. And rather than deal with such bad traits, ego, pride and bad temperament seize the momentum to aggravate the already bad situation through diverse form of assaults.

Being caught in the web of bad marriage makes separation or divorce become an option if efforts to normalize the situation fail and life threatening and health risks pervade the home. It is on this premise that I want to discuss the issue of divorce as an option in bad marriage situation while looking into the religious dimension of the issue.

Please ignore those who tell you to remain single. Human nature does not encourage anyone to stay without a companion.

Is divorce really bad? If yes, what is the way out of hopelessly bad, abusive and life threatening marriages? And if not, why do we stigmatise, deride and vehemently condemn it as if it is an abominable crime against humanity? Again, why do we mount pressures on the victims of bad marriages to stay put only for us to turn around and heap blames on them for not quitting or talking before the unexpected happens like we now witness in the last two weeks? What a world of hypocrisy we live in! What a society and families of hypocrites we belong to!

Divorce and separation are avenues for victims of bad marriages to stay alive and fulfil their purposes, visions, dreams and still enjoy life to the fullest. However, abusers and tormentors of their spouses are products of poor parenting! Over indulgent and wayward children grow up to become loveless, heartless, bitter, mean, stingy, unforgiving and hostile spouses in marriage. Their spouses unfortunately become preys and victims of their frustrated lifestyle.

As earlier stated, bad marriage is not the will of God for anybody. Marriage, originally is meant to be enjoyed. And sincerely, marriage is sweet if one is rightly paired! It is designed to be a blessing and not an affliction.

However, poor parenting and the choice of spouses people make matter a lot. Abusers didn’t just emerge from the blues, they are indulgent children who become bullies at adolescence through to becoming abusive spouses in their adulthood. The warning signs are always there from the beginning but blind love and desperation often make people to ignore them thinking they can fix the problem in marriage.

During the week, a young woman went on social media to announce the immediate cancellation of her traditional wedding slated for tomorrow, Saturday April 16, 2022 on account of violent behaviour of her fiancé. She narrated how she had been beaten blue and black several times with scars all over her body while in courtship. She also promised to refund the bride price he paid last week. I want to commend her courage for doing this and I want to enjoin those in similar abusive relationships to quit! It is only the living that gets married.

Divorce, as bad as it seems, is an avenue by which God saves souls being a way of escape for victims of abusive marriages. God is much more interested and concerned with our souls than marriage. Jesus didn’t go to the cross because of marriage but to save our souls from eternal condemnation. Remember, Jesus said there’s no marriage in heaven. (Matthew 22:30). Paul the Apostle wrote in 1 Corinthians 7:33-34 that married people do care for the things of this world – meaning that marriage is earthly and its merriments end here. In view of this truth, marriage, as far as God is concerned, is an option for His people. It is not a must, neither is it a do-or-die affair.

For the religious folks who see divorce strictly from the parochial prism of being a sacrilege, I dare to state that divorce is Biblical. Before you crucify me, let’s look into the Word. In Ezra chapters 9 and 10, we read accounts of wrong (not bad) marriages between Israelites and pagans. God had earlier warned against such interracial union but many of the leaders and men of God’s people violated the rule and married from the forbidden tribes. As a remorseful and penitent act, verses 11 and 12 state that the offenders willingly agreed to separate (divorce) from the pagan women and their children in obedience to God’s command.

In Matthew 1:19, Joseph had wanted to divorce his betrothed woman, Mary, secretly over her pregnancy but for the timely intervention of the Holy Spirit. His action was deemed legitimate according to culture and tradition of Jewish nation. Father Abraham sent Hagai packing (separation) on the order of Sarah. Queen Vashit was divorced by King of Persia for disrespecting him. (Esther 1). Conversely, had Samson separated from Delilah early enough, he would not have died prematurely, foolishly and shamefully.

“For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence,” (Malachi 2:16). This is the most quoted verse in the Bible when it comes to the issue of divorce. But we fail to read the verse both in contextual and implied meanings. The underlying statement here is violence! God hates divorce because it connotes attitudinal, emotional and physical violence. That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 19:8a that “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hardness of heart.” Hardness of heart in this context is euphemism for violent treatment and forceful ejection of estranged spouses. And to avoid spousal murder cases like we now have, Moses then approved divorce as a means to save lives.

People do quote Jesus’ statement that “What God has joined together let no man put asunder.” (Mark 10:9). My position is that how many marriages were actually contracted in strict compliance with God’s ordained process? Most of us violated His rules in the course of dating and courtship. Besides, the involved parties came together on their own volition and so they reserve the right to go their separate ways when the union is becoming life threatening.

After divorce, what next?

Separation does not automatically translate to divorce. In some amendable situations, separation is to allow warring couples cool off, think straight, review their issues, give room for intervention, counselling and prayers. In several cases, separated couples do reconcile and live harmoniously thenceforth. And where it is irreconcilable, then, they should stay apart and eventually divorce. It is not every troubled marriage that needs to end in divorce. Some require patience, forgiveness, understanding, tolerance counselling and more prayers to stabilize. Every marriage has its trying moments but how such times are handled will determine the success or otherwise of the union.

There’s life after divorce. Divorced couples can still reunite after realizing their mistakes and they decide to work on them. Better still, divorced people can still remarry to new partners. To remarry after divorce is in order. Please ignore those who tell you to remain single. Human nature does not encourage anyone to stay without a companion.

I want to advise the church to stop discriminating against single parents by denying them roles in the service of God. This is one of reasons victims like Osinachi died in her abusive marriage so she won’t be ostracized or “disciplined” for failure to keep her home.

Some misinformed folks do tell abused partners to stay put and endure if they are not being physically assaulted. This is misleading and suicidal. More than battering, other form of assaults like verbal, sexual, emotional, financial, mental and spiritual including pressures from the third party are equally devastating, frustrating, dehumanizing, torturing and killing.

In the last 10 years, there has been an upsurge in marital violence which has claimed several lives across genders. This year alone, about five cases have been widely reported in the media. This is aside the unreported or covered up cases and those that happened in remote villages and towns.

I want to advise the church to stop discriminating against single parents by denying them roles in the service of God. This is one of reasons victims like Osinachi died in her abusive marriage so she won’t be ostracized or “disciplined” for failure to keep her home. If she had quit, they might stop inviting her for programmes and run her down as an “adulterous” sister. What will people say and how will the church react actually sent her to her early grave.

Evasive statements by men of God in critical situations like bad marriage is both hypocritical and cowardly. Human lives should be a priority knowing that marriage is not a visa to heaven. Lastly, the church, family and friends should rally support for anybody languishing in bad marriage. Also, those keeping quiet while they die in silence should speak up and expose the ‘beasts’ they marry as spouses. Abuse is not gender specific, please speak up!

Happy Good Friday!

Covid-19 is still around. Don’t be deceived. You may not immediately feel the adverse impact of this virus. You may think that the virus is innocuous. That you have been vaccinated, as such, you can live as you desire. Hold on. If you have not experienced the damaging impact of the virus, be careful. That has not explained the fact that the virus is harmless.

Some businesses are cutting their losses. Others are counting their damages. For instance, Malaysia has recently exited another lockdown. Australia is on the verge of opening its border to visitors. A friend who lives in Malaysia said you need a police permit to leave your area. Besides, your itinerary has to be very important. Otherwise, you would not be permitted to leave your area.

Aside the restriction the covid-19 has placed on individuals, some businesses and banking around the world over have felt the impact the most. On the flipside, Fintech has been the beneficiary of the effect of the covide-19 pandemic. While some of the banks are closing shops, fintech start-ups are opening up. As the banks are retrenching staff, fintech start-ups are beefing up recruitment. Some of my friends worked in the technology backroom of two members of FUGAZ.

Anything you do, if it is technology-driven, it will defy gravity.

FUGAZ is First Bank, UBA, GTB, Access Bank and Zenith Bank. All of them have left the banks. They have joined some micro-lending fintech firms. Some are in dialogue with angle investors. Others are in a beta stage. Some have joined Fairmoney, a micro-lending fintech firm.

These are the reasons: Covid-19 protocol of maintaining social distance have compelled the techies to work from home. Staying at home is an impetus to work longer hours. While they are hole up in their various bedrooms, they are cocooned away from distractions. They are efficient. They are effective. They are responsive. But the bank’s management would not tolerate remote work schedule. The bank wants the techies in the office on Monday through Saturday. And most times, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, one of them told me, the office environment is not productive. It distracts. There are needless meetings. A meeting that should close in one hour is stretched to four or five hours. These meetings, most times, do not have clear goals. Besides, there are unnecessary telephone calls. You would receive disturbing-but-can-wait-emails. These are disruptions for the techies. This is so because the banks do not give the technology team the required space and man-hour to sweat the banking platform before it is launched.

At the end, the bank customers are unsatisfied. There are downtime. Glitches occurred. Followed by blame game. The bank’s management would blame the product owner. She would blame the head of technology. He would shift the blame to the techies. The techies would take the punch. In the shin calmly. They would nurse their injuries. They would bury their heads in shame. Their collective ego is bruised. Their morale is punctured. The project suffers. A project that should have ordinarily taken six weeks to implement and launch, would take six months. And the cycle continues.

These are the reasons some of them left the banks. Now, they are working remotely for different Fintech firms. The bank loses. Fintech gains. This is not about to stop. For as long as the Covid-19 virus remains, the remote work culture would persist. The banks would not relent. The staff would be adamant. And the cycle continues. You can say it is different strokes for different banks.

On the one hand

The effect of the covid-19 pandemic on people’s banking and shopping habits has accelerated bank closure in the UK. To ensure social distancing and less commute, more consumers are transacting businesses online. For instance, TSB plans to close 70 bank branches this year. About 150 staff could be sacked. TSB will have 220 sites left across the UK. The bank’s loss is Fintech gains. As more bank customers move online, the micro-lending and digital banking are the sure way to go. Digital banking makes life easy for customers. It is less stress for the banks. Each party is happy.

TSB bank said the latest closures are in response to declining branch use and more customers using digital services. The closures, which will take place between April and June 2022, will result in 150 job cuts. Those staff will be offered alternative roles at the company. TSB’s latest announcement comes after it announced around of closure in 2021 when it shut 164 branches – or a third of its sites. In November 2019 it shut down 82 bank branches as part of its closure programme.

TSB’s chief customer officer Robin Bulloch said: “Closing branches is an incredibly difficult decision to take, but we have to respond to the changes in the way people bank and provide the right mix of services for all our customers now and into the future.

You know, now that many bank customers have discovered the allure of the Fintech platforms, returning to the past is in the past.

TSB isn’t the only UK banking chain closing branches. Other companies are also reducing their high street presence as more bank customers switch to online banking. Lloyd’s and Halifax will close 48 sites. These two banks have already announced 100 closures in 2021.

On the other hand

As it is in the UK so it is in Nigeria. The International Monetary Fund report said that Nigeria’s banks closed 234 branches and 649 ATMs in 2020. This was due to the decline in the number of commercial bank branches in Nigeria. The number was 5,158 in 2020. In 2019 it was 5,392. More bank branches would be shut in 2022. Why? Exorbitant cost of raising bank branches. High overhead cost. Lower maintenance cost of digital platform. Emergence of ultra-responsive Fintech firms. Covid-19. While the pandemic has thrown many balls in the air, only one ball will defy gravity.

Please, which ball will it be?

Bigmummy, you should have guessed.

Tell me.

It is technology.

Anything you do, if it is technology-driven, it will defy gravity. You know, now that many bank customers have discovered the allure of the Fintech platforms, returning to the past is in the past. This culture will remain so for as long as Covid-19 is still around.

The Lagos Bus Services Limited, LBSL, operator of Marcopolo high-capacity buses, says it has secured approval of the state government for upward review of fares and right to ply Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, dedicated lane.

The Chief Executive Officer of LBSL, Mr Idowu Oguntona, made the announcement in a statement on Monday by Mr Afolabi Olawale, the Public Affairs Officer of the company.

Oguntona said that the approvals would take effect from August 1.

He said that the firm had been given an approval by the state government for an average of 46 per cent increase in the transportation fare of LBSL.

The LBSL boss said: “The approval to use the BRT corridor by the governor is to further give the commuting public a better experience on Lagos roads.

“The increase in the number of passengers and fare become necessary in order to enable the company sustain its operations following the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on public bus transportation.

“The governor also approved LBSL’s request to increase the number of passengers per bus from 20 to 42 in strict observance of updated COVID-19 safety protocol as directed by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the operation of public transport, whilst ensuring all other measures are in place,” he said.

According to him, as part of reforms ongoing in the LBSL, the government has also granted approval for the operators of the buses to commute passengers to its full capacity without standing.

He said that this must be done with strict adherence to necessary safety protocols.

The managing director said that the COVID-19 guidelines, which restricted the firm to convey not more than 20 passengers per bus, had affected the running of the buses.

He said that the development led to 72 per cent drop in revenue of the company while running costs remained fairly the same.

Oguntona described the approval from the governor as a long-expected desire by the agency.

According to him, news of the approval came at such a crucial time when the commuters needed it most, thus making bus journey times predictable on corridors with bus dedicated lanes.

He said that the decision of the governor would further reposition the company for enhanced performance, assuring all the stakeholders of the company of an improved operational experience going forward.

Oguntona added that the fare increase would improve LBSL’s operational efficiency and place the company on the path of sustainability in the long term.

According to him, the permission granted by the governor now gives access to LBSL buses to use the dedicated BRT corridor from Berger through Ikorodu Road to Leventis, TBS, and Obalende and also from Oshodi through Ikorodu Road to Leventis, Inner- Marina, TBS and Obalende among several other routes.

He commended the gesture of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for listening to the yearnings of Lagosians when it mattered most by allowing Lagos Bus Services Limited, LBSL, to ply BRT lane.

Oguntona also appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Transportation as well as the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, for their relentless efforts in moving the company forward.

He assured Lagos residents that the company would continue to strive harder to bring public transportation in Lagos State to a reputable standard.

Okoro was said to have slumped at a private residence in Umuahia at about 1 p.m. on Thursday and died before he could get medical help.

Nwankwo, who is a PDP chairman, confirmed the incident to newsmen at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where the deceased was taken to for medical attention.

Nwankwo, who was a close political ally of the deceased, said that he slumped after holding a meeting with some officials of the council in Umuahia.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has declared that it has the mandate to train drivers.

The corps made the declaration in reaction to a report attributed to the Chairman, Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, NIIT, Zaeia, Olorogun John Onojeharho.

In the report, the NIIT boss was quoted as having said that FRSC did not have the mandate to train drivers.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Mr. Bisi Kazeem, FRSC stated: “We wish to state unequivocally that it is the responsibility of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to ensure that drivers, motorists, and motorcyclists are properly trained on how to operate their vehicles before they are qualified to apply for the National Drivers Lincence and that there are certified driving schools to conduct such trainings with the Corps monitoring their activities to ensure compliance to standards.”

FRSC said, “consequently, the assumption that the Corps is not mandated by law to train drivers is totally out of place, considering that the mandate is contained in Section 10 (3)c of the FRSC Establishment Act 2007 wherein it is stated that part of the mandate of the FRSC is: ‘to educate Drivers, Motorists and the members of the public generally on the proper use of the highways.”

It stated too that it was important to place the term training in proper perspective as education and training were not entirely devoid of one another.

“Going by definition by Merriam Webster, Education is a field of study that deals mainly with the methods of teaching and learning, and it’s synonymic to training. Whereas, training means a process by which someone is taught a skill that is needed for an art, profession, or job.

“Furthermore, FRSC is especially concerned with the safety on the roads which has necessitated the organisation to engage in training workshops to educate fleet operators on the minimum safety standards needed to operate a fleet of commercial vehicles with 5 vehicles and above. It is also instructive to state that the Corps has the mandate to educate motorists going by the regulation quoted above.”

Nigeria is ready to provide counterpart funding on all agreements reached with China for the provision of infrastructure that directly improves the livelihood of Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari said Thursday in Abuja.

Receiving Yang Jiechi, Special Envoy of the President of China, Xi Jinping, at State House, President Buhari expressed deep appreciation for China’s sustained and genuine efforts to improve Nigeria’s infrastructure development, especially in the sectors of road, railway, aviation, as well as power and water resources.

He promised that all agreements would be honoured.

‘‘Now that we have a government in place (with the Ministers), we know the provision of infrastructure is very important. It (Infrastructure) provides job opportunities and economic sustainability which are very important for political stability,’’ the president said.

President Buhari also underlined Nigeria and China’s cooperation at the international arena, saying: ‘‘At the international level, we appreciate the support we give to each other and very importantly this must be sustained.’’

“Nigeria is determined to play its role wherever China’s interest is concerned,’’ the President said while appreciating China’s support for Nigeria’s presidency of the 74th UN General Assembly.

On Lake Chad, the president emphasised the need for sustained support from China on the recharging of The Lake, noting that Nigeria and countries in the region have a lot to benefit from Chinese expertise and technology on inter-basin water transfer.

“China has the technology, the people and the resources to help Lake Chad Basin countries because not many people in the region appreciate our problem of being near the Sahara desert and its influence on our population and climate change, which is affecting over 20 million people living there,’’ he said.

President Buhari also welcomed the offer by the special envoy for close partnership between Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress and the Communist Party of China.

Delivering the message of President Xi, the Special envoy, who led a high-powered Chinese delegation to the meeting, assured President Buhari of China’s readiness to improve strategic partnership with Nigeria and effectively implement the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit in 2018.

‘‘China firmly supports Nigeria in pursuing a development path that supports Nigeria’s national conditions. We have every confidence that under Your Excellency’s able leadership, Nigeria will achieve even greater success in its national development.

‘‘During Your Excellency’s trip to China for the FOCAC Beijing Summit, we had bilateral meetings and reached important agreements on our bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.

‘‘I highly value China’s ties with Nigeria and stand ready to work with Your Excellency to enhance our political trust, jointly pursue Belt and Road Cooperation, effectively implement the outcomes of FOCAC and strengthen our coordination in regional and international affairs so as to further enrich the strategic partnership between both countries,’’ President Xi said.

The Chinese leader once again congratulated President Buhari on his re-election.

With President Buhari at the meeting were Ministers of Finance; Budget and National Planning; Power; Transport; Aviation; Industry; Trade and Investment and Foreign Affairs.

The meeting discussed the status and implementation of several on-going projects being undertaken by Chinese firms in the country including railways, free trade zones, Mambilla Hydro-Power plant and four airport terminals, among others.
