The President, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, Dr Ike Neliaku, has charged 421 newly inducted members to ensure proper projection and effective management of Nigeria’s reputation, image and narratives.

Neliaku gave the charge at the institute’s 2026 first quarter induction ceremony on Thursday in Abuja.

He stressed that NIPR was not a civil society organisation, union or activist group, but a professional institute guided by scientific principles.

“NIPR is an institute. What that means is that whatever we are doing must be scientific. It must not be based on emotion because in our clime, emotion rules logic.

“Once you do something, you are first of all judged from the perception of emotion.

”If the message is strong and the messenger is weak, the messenger will corrupt the message. And as a result of that, people will not likely listen to the message of the messenger.

“This is because credibility goes before contact. It is who you are that will speak for you, even before you come into the room. That’s why we talk about reputation,” he said.

Neliaku noted that in today’s media environment, visibility does not necessarily translate to success.

“You can be visible everywhere but not victorious in your context. Eloquence without credibility is a fragile asset; it can easily be punctured,” he added.

He said that public relations practitioners were not merely storytellers but custodians of national integrity, reputation and credibility.

He urged practitioners to be proactive and transparent, adding that mistakes should be acknowledged to build trust.

The NIPR president also reviewed recent media engagements involving public officials and highlighted the importance of credibility in shaping public perception.

He further outlined upcoming activities of the institute, including its Annual General Meeting, AGM, in Kaduna, the World Public Relations Forum in Abuja and the African Public Relations Association, APRA, conference in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Vice President of the institute, Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura, represented by Malam Mukhtar Sirajo, reminded the inductees of the global relevance of the profession.

“Being a member of the NIPR, you are also a member not just here, but you are recognised as a peer practitioner in all the countries of Africa and in all the 126 countries that are members of the Global Alliance.

“So, you are not just joining a profession in Nigeria, you are being inducted into becoming a global professional in the practice of public relations.

“This induction is not being done for the glamour and the pictures that you are taking, it is in fulfillment of a legal requirement for you to be accepted as members,” he said.

Mr Ini Essien delivered the induction orientation lecture, while the Chairman, Membership Services Committee, Mrs Maryam Sanusi, presented the inductees.

The Registrar, Mr Uzoma Onyagbadue, administered the oath on the 421 new members.

The inductees pledged to abide by the institute’s rules and contribute to promoting Nigeria’s reputation and positive narratives.

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, has once again strengthened the administration and regulation of public relations practice in Nigeria with the launch of the annual Public Relations, Reputation, Ideas, Concepts and Excellence, PRICE, Awards and Prizes.

The Awards will serve as the body’s premier system for the curation, recognition, exhibition and celebration of outstanding campaigns and accomplishments in the practice of public relations in Nigeria.

The maiden edition of the Awards will take place on Sunday, 7th December 2025, at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

Envisioned as a credible and enduring platform to identify, celebrate, and elevate outstanding individuals, campaigns, and organisations shaping the public relations landscape across sectors, the development of the PRICE Awards peaked in September 2025 when Dr. Ike Neliaku, President and Chairman of Council of NIPR, inaugurated the committee to organise the maiden edition of the Awards.

The inauguration of the committee followed the NIPR Council’s adoption of the report of a technical team saddled with the responsibility of birthing the award.

While inaugurating the 12-member Organising Committee, Neliaku, said, “we have carefully selected you to chart this path for us. Some of you have done us proud on the international stage winning major awards and flying Nigeria’s flag on the global stage. We are challenging you to come and give Nigeria something similar in terms of prestige, class and colour. Now, we are asking you to give Nigeria her own world class Public Relations awards system.”

He further urged the committee to “engage stakeholders, sponsors and partners and organise a world class award ceremony.”

The NIPR President also expressed the confidence that the PRICE Awards will not only motivate professionals, practitioners and scholars but enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness in the global public relations ecosystem, and strengthen brand equity for all stakeholders, including the NIPR as a leading light of public relations and communication management administration and regulation in Nigeria.

Accepting the responsibility of the Committee, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Israel Jaiye Opayemi, a fellow of the Institute and Managing Director/Chief Strategist of Chain Reactions Africa, expressed the committee’s determination to give the Nigerian public relations community a best-in-class award administration and ceremony.

Opayemi noted that the PRICE awards would indeed be an opportunity for our own proverbial prophets to be honoured at home.

“We have been winning international awards and flying the Nigerian flag on the global stage in far-flung places and before a global audience. Now is the time for the best of us to be honoured right here at home and in the presence of the Nigerian people,” he reiterated Neliaku’s commendation and challenge.

Members of the Committee comprising seasoned public relations professionals and scholars include Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan (Vice Chairman), Dr. Mary Ikoku, Edemekong Uyoh, Adesola Oyawoye, Odoh Diego Okenyodo, Damilola Olujide, Beatrice Okpara, Prince MG Duku, Chief Patrick Ukah, Mrs. Chidinma Awak (Secretary) and Kater Amos Foga (Assistant Secretary).

The PRICE award will honour outstanding works across the gamut of public relations and communications by celebrating the primacy of strategy, creativity, innovation and impact across different strata of the practice.

It would also honour emerging public relations talents such as students and young professionals with cash prizes and plaques to underscore the value the NIPR places on creativity and excellence.

The NIPR was established in 1963 and chartered in 1990 through Decree No. 16 (now an Act of the National Assembly, cited as CAP n114 laws of the Federation of Nigeria LFN 2004).

It is the first national Public Relations organisation in the world to be chartered.

Its enabling law authorises it to register practitioners of public relations, set standards for knowledge acquisition, and regulate the practice and development of public relations in Nigeria.

It is supervised by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation. It is one of Nigeria’s most active, visible and influential professional bodies. Some of its flagship programmes include the National Spokespersons Summit and the Nigeria Public Relations Week but it is in the news weekly promoting the importance and relevance of public relations and responsible communication management.

In 2023, the NIPR succeeded in getting official proclamation making the practice of public relations a cadre exclusively for professional managers across Nigeria.

The NIPR partners and collaborates with many institutions, organisations and governments globally to enhance the relevance of public relations practice; it is a leading member of the African Public Relations Association, APRA, and an influential member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, GA.

Recently, the NIPR won the bid to host concurrently the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) 2026 and the APRA Annual Conference in 2026, both taking place from 15-21 November 2026.

Inaugurating the committee in Abuja, the president of NIPR, Dr Ike Neliaku, said the NPC was saddled with the responsibility of organising the 2026 WPRF tagged “Abuja 2026”.

Neliaku tasked the committee to deliver on the mandate given to them, stressing that the international event had given Nigeria the opportunity to shape its narrative and boost its image and reputation.

Responding, the chairman of the committee, Haruna, said that the inauguration of registration and unveiling marked the formal beginning of preparations of what promised to be one of the most significant gathering of communication professionals ever held on the African soil.

”On behalf of the members of the committee, I want to sincerely thank the leadership of NIPR for the confidence reposed in us.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has urged the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, to leverage strategic communication to promote Nigeria’s image and strengthen its bilateral relations on the global stage.

Tuggar made the call in a message delivered by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Mr Alkasim Abdulkadir, during the Nigeria Reputation Management, NRMG, Retreat on Tuesday in Abuja.

The NRMG, an initiative of NIPR, aims to reshape Nigeria’s global perception and national narrative.

He stated that in an era of contested and often manipulated media spaces, the role of public relations professionals had become critical, not just in managing reputations but in defining Nigeria’s story with clarity, integrity, and purpose.

Tuggar called on the NRMG to view its mission as a national one, beyond institutional boundaries, emphasising the need to promote a unified ethos built on resilience, innovation, and shared national values.

“The NRMG is uniquely positioned to reclaim Nigeria’s narrative, correct misrepresentations, amplify achievements, and highlight our leaders as custodians of democratic accountability.

READ ALSO: How KYC not PEP helps Fintech growth

“Your role in fighting fake news, disinformation, and foreign manipulation is vital,” he said.

He added that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, communication must also serve as a diplomatic tool to foster unity, attract investment, and reinforce Nigeria’s voice globally.

NIPR President, Dr Ike Neliaku, said the issue with Nigeria’s reputation was not the absence of success stories but a failure to tell them adequately.

He cited achievements such as the Super Falcons’ recent victory and the global recognition of young Nigerian talents.

“We under-tell our stories and over-tell those of others. It’s time to change that.

“Nigeria remains the greatest country on earth by many standards. Narrative and storytelling will reshape our global image,” Neliaku said.

Also speaking, Mr John Momoh, Chairman of the NRMG Body of Advisers, commended the Super Falcons for their recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory.

He described it as more than a sporting milestone, calling it a powerful story of resilience and excellence.

Momoh emphasised that national reputation must be built not only on image but on consistent performance and values.

“The world hears about our setbacks, but not our strengths. Our task is to build a unified, credible, and compelling national narrative.”

The president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, Ms. Maureen Chigbo, has stated that the organisation’s primary objective is to sanitize the online media space and establish standards for the industry.

Speaking at the launch of GOCOP’s maiden publication, “Nigeria Media Renaissance: GOCOP Perspectives on Online Publishing,” and a fundraising event for the GOCOP Media Center in Abuja, Chigbo emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders to achieve this goal.

As a group of professional journalists with over two decades of experience in mainstream media, GOCOP is committed to promoting ethical online publishing practices.

Chigbo noted that the organisation’s members were dedicated to upholding the principles of truth, fairness, and balanced reporting, and had introduced a self-regulatory mechanism to ensure compliance.

To maintain high standards, GOCOP had established several committees, including a Disciplinary Committee/Ombudsman to address public complaints and ensure accountability.

Chigbo stressed that the organisation took its self-regulation responsibility seriously and was committed to weeding out unprofessional conduct.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has declared that the crucial roles of the media in deepening the nation’s democracy and promoting national development cannot be over-emphasised.

The minister made the declaration just as he stressed that the federal government was committed to maintaining a free, responsible, and vibrant press.

The minister made the assertions on Tuesday in Abuja at the public presentation of the book, Nigeria Media Renaissance – Perspectives on Online Publishing, published by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP.

Idris applauded GOCOP saying its efforts in promoting ethical standards and innovation within the digital media landscape were quite remarkable.

Pointing out that the federal government was determined to uphold press freedom in line with the core values of journalism – truth, fairness, and accountability – the minister said the government was ready to work with the media to raise standards, enhance public communication, promote media literacy, and present narratives that foster national unity and inspire collective progress.

His words: “The Federal Government is committed to a free, responsible, and vibrant press that aligns with the enduring core values of journalism — truth, fairness, and accountability.

“We want to work with the media to raise standards, promote media literacy, strengthen public communication, and tell the Nigerian story in a way that inspires hope and galvanises action.”

Speaking on the need for the government and media to renew their commitment to democratic principles and public service, he said: “Democracy, as we must constantly remind ourselves, is not merely the right to vote. It is not an end in itself.

“It is a means to an end — that end being the upliftment of the living standards of the Nigerian people, the provision of social services, the guarantee of rights and freedoms, and the development of infrastructure that supports economic and human progress.”

READ ALSO: Fuel: Consequences of Dangote’s planned free delivery -Analysts

He said the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration was being intentional in its moves to translate democratic ideals into practical outcomes by focusing on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and the expansion of social services.

He said the efforts of the government were aimed at shifting the economy from a consumption-based model to one driven by production and long-term sustainability.

Idris stressed the importance of digital and online media in shaping public opinion, promoting accountability, and fostering national cohesion.

“The media — especially the digital and online media represented here today — has a critical role to play in nurturing our democracy. You are the gatekeepers of information. You shape public discourse.

“We have seen how a false report can ignite violence, disrupt markets, or destroy reputations in a matter of minutes,” he declared.

Although he said GOCOP members were generally not associated with spreading falsehoods, he appealed to them to take an active role in identifying and exposing those who use media irresponsibly.

He disclosed that in order to strengthen the fight against disinformation and improve media professionalism, the UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy Institute was scheduled to open in Abuja by November 2025.

The minister applauded GOCOP for producing the book, describing it as a great effort to redefine journalistic ethics and standards in the digital era.

President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, reviewed the book at the occasion.

He praised GOCOP for writing the book and recommended it for all.

Present among other dignitaries at the occasion were former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Professor Ralph Akinfeleye.

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, on Friday inducted 515 new members into the profession.

Speaking at the ceremony conducted at Nasarawa State University Keffi, NSUK, Dr Ike Neliaku, President, NIPR charged the new inductees to be change drivers.

Neliaku urged the inductees to use their licence as certified public relations professionals to offer qualitative leadership and project the good image of Nigeria.

“Today you are being licensed as effective communicators who will give Nigeria qualitative leadership wherever you find yourself.

“We are starting early to groom you, mould you, build you as that successful generation of powerful leaders for this nation. Public relations is very critical to leadership,” he said.

He told the 238 inductees physically present and 277 new members inducted virtually that public relations is also vital to development.

According to him, those who influence development are effective communicators, hence the need for them to maximise their skills in pushing for impactful development wherever they find themselves.

“As young leaders please bear in mind that you have become development advocates, development drivers, who will find out what the citizens want and meet their needs in rendering development,” he said.

He further admonished them to use public relations as a weapon for nation building and see themselves as lovers of Nigeria.

“Do not join those that use their mouths to destroy our nation. Our nation is going through challenges, but this is the only nation we have on earth. Don’t join those who use their mouths to run our nation down,” he stressed.

Mr Danmusa Mohammed, an inductee, said that he was excited and fulfilled to be inducted, having practised as a journalist for 30 years.

“It has always been my dream to join the public relations family and NIPR is doing a lot in sanitising the society, especially in creating a positive narrative for the country and making people believe in the country.

“I want to be part of that effort and contribute my quota through my public relations effort in developing Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Joseph Kaka, another inductee, described the induction as a day of harvest and the beginning of a professional career in public relations for him.

He lauded the NIPR for constantly working hard to train and produce public relations professionals from across the country.
