The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has paid a get-well visit to two gallant officers of the agency currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja.

The officers – Ayegh Dooyun Zachariah and Shehu Jamil Ibrahim – sustained severe injuries following a violent mob attack on them during a raid on a notorious drug joint in the Dawaki area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, on Friday, 15th May 2026.

During his visit to their bedsides on Monday 25th May, Marwa sympathized with the injured officers and extended the support of the entire NDLEA management. He assured them that the agency would take full responsibility for their welfare, ensuring they receive the highest standard of medical care until they are fully recovered and back on their feet.

“The Agency will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible for this cowardly attack are arrested, and brought to justice. An attack on our officers is an attack on the state, and it will not go unpunished,” Marwa stated while assuring the officers that they will get justice.

He commended the duo for their exceptional bravery, unalloyed commitment to duty, and outstanding professionalism displayed during the high-risk Dawaki operation.

He emphasized that their sacrifices in the ongoing fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking remain invaluable to the nation.

To further motivate the officers and recognize their heroism, the NDLEA boss’ visit was backed by the immediate roll-out of incentives including the presentation of official Letters of Commendation personally signed by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, alongside other support packages to aid their swift recovery.

He also praised the agency’s medical team and their counterparts at the National Hospital for their prompt response and proper care that have since stabilised the injured officers.

Marwa assured the public that the NDLEA remained resolute in its mission to dismantle drug cartels and sanitize communities across the country, undeterred by violent resistance from criminal elements.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and the staff for the remarkable achievement in busting a Nigerian-Mexican drug syndicate and dismantling a highly sophisticated multi-million-dollar illegal drug production network in the country.

Chairman of the agency, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), on Wednesday announced the major drug bust following a massive operation spanning weeks of intelligence gathering and meticulous planning by NDLEA operatives in collaboration with international partners.

President Tinubu remarked: “This successful operation, which led to the arrest of foreign nationals, local kingpins and other collaborators, as well as the seizure of chemicals and illicit drugs valued at over $360 million, demonstrates exceptional professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding society from the devastating effects of narcotics.”

“I commend the bravery, resilience, and dedication displayed by operatives of the NDLEA throughout this mission. I urge them not to be complacent in confronting the menace of drug trafficking.

“West Africa has become a great concern in the global war against narcotics as drug barons turn our region into a transit hub for moving cocaine, synthetic drugs and unregulated pharmaceuticals to Europe and North America.

“Drugs not only pose a critical security threat for our region, but they also pose a grave danger to the future of our youth, some of whom have become victims of the trade.

“I call on all Nigerians to see the fight against illicit drugs not NDLEA’s alone. Everyone has a role to play. We must remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within our communities to assist security agencies in combating criminal networks.

“This landmark success is a strong message that our security agencies will not tolerate organised crime and criminality anywhere in the country, and that those who threaten public safety and national security will face the wrath of the law.”

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) has urged Nigerians to rise and counter the toxic pop-culture that glamorizes abuse of illicit substances as an acceptable way of life especially among the youth.

Marwa who gave the charge during the official commissioning of the agency’s radio station, Clean Beat 91.5FM in Abuja on Thursday 21st May 2026 challenged all stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to join the NDLEA in its War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, social advocacy drive to save the youth population from the danger of accepting abuse of illicit drugs as an acceptable culture.

According to him, “We recognize that behind every statistic of drug abuse is a human being. A vulnerable teenager seeking escape; a broken family searching for answers; a brilliant mind derailed but capable of redirection. Through this station, we will drive our narrative softly but firmly. We will counter the toxic pop-culture that glamorizes drug abuse by replacing it with a vibrant, alternative culture—one that celebrates sobriety, showcases real stories of recovery, and provides accurate, life-saving information.

“Let us make no mistake: the stakes could not be higher. If we do not control the narrative today, the consequences tomorrow will be catastrophic. Substance abuse is a hydra-headed monster that feeds insecurity, decimates public health, cripples economic productivity, and compromises the very future of our workforce.

“But for us at the NDLEA, we refuse to look at the future through a lens of despair. We’re deeply hopeful because today represents concrete action. It represents a paradigm shift. It proves that the NDLEA is not just reacting to threats, but proactively innovating to stay ahead of them. Clean Beat 91.5 FM will stand as a beacon of light, constantly reminding us that a drug-free Nigeria is not an idealistic dream, it is an achievable reality.

“Today, we are doing something far more significant than merely switching on a transmitter or launching a new radio station. Today, we are amplifying hope. We are commissioning a powerful, relentless voice for a cause that sits at the very heart of our national security, the survival of our communities, and the destiny of our youth.

“At the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, our mandate is clear, and our resolve is unyielding. Day and night, our officers are on the front lines. We intercept illicit shipments, we dismantle sophisticated criminal syndicates, and we prosecute those who trade in human misery.

“With the benefit of hindsight, I have always maintained that while enforcement wins battles, education and prevention win wars. True victory against the scourge of substance abuse cannot be achieved solely by the cold steel of handcuffs or the iron bars of a prison cell. It is won when we dismantle the demand. It is won when we conquer the ignorance that lures our children into the abyss of addiction.

“And that is precisely why Clean Beat 91.5 FM was conceived. In a fast-evolving digital age, radio remains an incomparable asset. It is intimate. It is immediate. It bypasses barriers and speaks directly to the citizen—in their living rooms, on their daily commutes, in the bustling marketplaces, and in the quiet moments of introspection.”

He stated that the milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who approved the budget for the station, the National Security Adviser and the National Broadcasting Commission who both approved the radio frequency, international partners, and the dedicated team at the NDLEA who worked tirelessly to translate the vision into broadcast reality.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to you all. Your partnership proves that when we unite against a common threat, victory is inevitable,” he added.

“To all Nigerians, and most especially to our vibrant youth: this station is yours. Tune in, engage with our programmes, challenge yourselves, and become ambassadors of this movement. Let us rewrite the story of our generation; let us guard the health of our nation; and let us protect the rhythm of our future. Together, ladies and gentlemen, let us keep the beat clean,” the NDLEA boss pleaded.

In his goodwill message at the occasion, United Nations Country Representative, Mr. Cheikh Ousmane Touré, who was represented by Dr. Akanidomo Ibanga, commended Marwa for considering a radio platform as a viable tool for advocacy.

“Through this initiative, the NDLEA has demonstrated its continued commitment to innovative and people-centred approaches that complement enforcement efforts with education, advocacy, and dialogue. Through this platform, NDLEA is taking the drug control message directly to the people — into homes, communities, schools, and streets.

“This initiative also aligns strongly with the National Drug Control Master Plan and reinforces the leadership of NDLEA in driving a balanced, health-oriented, and security-conscious approach to drug control in Nigeria,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Mr. Charles Ebuebu commended the agency’s leadership “under the visionary stewardship of Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa for this remarkable initiative. The establishment of Clean Beat 91.5 FM represents far more than the launch of another radio station. It represents the strategic deployment of broadcasting as an instrument of national orientation, behavioural change, youth engagement and social transformation.”

“I am particularly encouraged by the station’s focus on youth engagement. Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world and our greatest long-term national investment must remain the protection, education and empowerment of our young people. The fight against substance abuse is therefore not simply a law enforcement responsibility. It is a national developmental imperative,” he added.

Speaking in the same light, Director General of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who was represented by Mr. Bala Musa hailed the idea of the radio station as a platform to enhance positive attitudinal change and citizens reorientation.

By OLOLADE HECTOR

Cannabis, commonly called “weed”, “igbo”, or “marijuana”, is becoming alarmingly common among secondary school and university students in Nigeria and parents are totally ignorant. What used to be hidden is now normalized in music, skits, and peer groups. Parents can’t afford to ignore it.

Now, Cannabis use among young adults aged 18-30 is worse and rising fast. For many, it starts as “just weekends” in university or during NYSC, then quietly becomes daily dependence. Unlike teens, young adults have legal freedom, income, and privacy. That makes the conversation harder, but more urgent.

Why Are Young Adults Smoking Weed?

Peer Pressure and “Belonging” is the biggest driver. Many teens and youth start just to fit in to avoid being called such names like “egbe” (boring / unexposed) or “Jew” or “Holy Mary”.

They also justify it by pointing to others: “Lots of people take it and look okay. I know someone who’s used it for years without issues.”

That’s selective thinking. Bodies differ, and so do outcomes. Addiction happens. So do short-and long-term health damage, psychosis, financial loss, and a shredded reputation.

Other reasons include:

Stress and Adulting Pressure: Job hunting, underemployment, bills, and “what am I doing with my life?” anxiety. Weed becomes a quick escape.

Social Normalization: It’s in Afrobeats lyrics, Netflix shows, and tech/bro culture. “Everyone does it” becomes the excuse.

Self-Medication: For undiagnosed anxiety, depression, ADHD, or trauma. They use weed to sleep, focus, or stop overthinking.

Misconceptions About Safety: The “it’s just a plant” myth. Many don’t know today’s THC levels are 3x stronger than 10 years ago.

Accessibility and Privacy: No school uniform to check. They can order edibles, vapes, or “cookies” online and use in their flat without parents knowing.

Signs Your Young Adult Child Might Be Using Or Dependent

Lifestyle: Job loss or frequent job changes, missing family events, money always “finishing” with nothing to show, sudden drop in hygiene or drive.

Behavioural: Withdrawing from family, irritability when not high, defensiveness about drug talk, only socializing with other users, drop in ambition.

Physical/Mental: Red eyes, chronic cough, the smell, memory lapses, lack of motivation or “amotivational syndrome”, paranoia, worsening anxiety when sober.

Evidence: watch out for that unique smell (pungent, woody, pleasant aroma, often lemon-grassy, citrusy, piney, incense-lemony, earthy or skunky- there are variants), bloodshot eyes, glassy eyes, and the Grinders, vape pens, rolling papers, edibles packaging, constant use of incense/air freshener/ heavy perfume, unexplained debts.

Help is not forcing them to stop. They can’t be forced. Help is making it easier to choose sobriety than addiction. Help is talking to them about it before that one puff.

How a Parent Can Help An Adult Child

Respect Their Adulthood, Keep Your Influence: You can’t ground a 24-year-old. But you can set boundaries: “You’re an adult and I love you. Weed isn’t allowed in my house/car. If you need help quitting, I’m 100% in.”

Talk Like an Adult, not a Warden: Drop the lectures. Try: “I’ve noticed you seem really stressed lately. I read that a lot of young people use weed to cope. Is that true for you? I’m worried about your future and I want to help.”

Mention the effects of marijuana. These effects may last a long time or even be permanent. Tell them “Smoking any product, including marijuana, can damage your lungs, increase your risk of bronchitis and scar small blood vessels. Smoking marijuana can also increase your risk of psychosis, stroke, heart disease and other vascular diseases.”

Focus on Function, Not Morals: Don’t argue “weed is evil”. Argue “weed is costing you or will cost you”. Connect it to their goals: jobs, relationships, mental clarity, money. Ask: “Is this getting you closer to the life you want?” You have to present this calmly so they don’t tune you out. You may send them videos of repentant drug users who are now clean sharing their ugly experiences too.

Encourage Professional Help: Addiction is medical. A therapist or psychiatrist can address the anxiety/depression underneath. Suggest: “Let’s just talk to a doctor to check what’s really going on. I’ll go with you if you want.”

Stop Enabling, Start Supporting Recovery: Don’t pay debts caused by drug use. Don’t lie to cover for them. Do offer to pay for therapy, rehab, or a skill course. Help has conditions; love doesn’t.

Address Your Own Role: Did family trauma, pressure, or conflict push them toward escape? Family therapy helps. You can’t control them, but you can change the home environment.

Prepare for Resistance: They may say “I’m fine” or “It’s not addictive”. Stay calm. Plant seeds. Say: “I’m here when you’re ready. I believe you can beat this.” Then back off and pray. Nagging builds walls.

Protect Your Peace Too: You can love them without drowning with them. Join a support group like Nar-Anon or talk to a counsellor yourself. You need strength to help them.

Final Word

Young adults use weed because they want to belong, life feels hard and the drug feels easy. But long-term use kills motivation, harms lungs, triggers psychosis in some, and stalls growth. They don’t need your judgment. They need your wisdom, boundaries, and steady love.

Help is not forcing them to stop. They can’t be forced. Help is making it easier to choose sobriety than addiction. Help is talking to them about it before that one puff.

If you need counselling / Rehabilitation for your child? Seek Professional Help Early from any of these organisations:

Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative:

CADAM Epe

House of Refuge Lekki

NDLEA 24/7 helpline: 0800-1020-3040.

Lagos State also has free counselling at LASUTH and Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Yaba.

Others on Google

They may be adults, but they’re still your child(ren). Don’t give up on them. Let’s fight for them before the weed wins.

Note: Be vigilant. Both male and female are on this ugly trend; it cuts across all demographics; and it’s not necessarily about bad friends influencing them as we usually believe. Sometimes it’s from within the nuclear and extended family.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have intercepted a large consignment of Canadian Loud, a high-potency strain of cannabis, weighing 4,173.5 kilograms with a street value of N10, 433, 750,000.00 only at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos.

The successful interdiction of the illicit drug consignment followed painstaking intelligence gathering, sustained surveillance, and trailing of the container, which was transloaded a number of times since it left Toronto, Canada on 28th March.

It was conveyed through rails to Montreal, where it was loaded on board a vessel, Jakarta express voyage, which arrived Tanger Med Port in Morocco on 15th April, discharged and reloaded on another vessel, Osaka voyage, which eventually arrived the Lagos Port on Saturday 9th May 2026.

The over two months of monitoring the shipment by the Marine Intelligence Unit of NDLEA and the Tincan Island Strategic Command of the Agency, working in close collaboration with international partners particularly the United Kingdom Home Office International Operations, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, culminated in the eventual seizure of the consignment on Tuesday 12th May during a joint examination of the container by NDLEA operatives, men of Customs Service and other security agencies.

The development comes barely four days after NDLEA operatives raided a Lekki mansion used as stash house where 4,000 parcels of same psychoactive substance weighing 2,326 kilograms worth over N5,815,000,000.00 were recovered.

The illicit drug consignments from Canada were professionally packed and concealed inside two vehicles: a used Ford Bus and a Mercedes Benz C300 car, stashed within the shipping container. Speaking during the handover of the exhibits by the NCS at the Port in Lagos on Wednesday 13th May, the NDLEA’s Director of Seaports Operations, ACG Ibinabo ArchieAbia said the “achievement once again demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation, international collaboration, and intelligence-driven operations in combating transnational organised crime and illicit drug trafficking.”

Reacting to the development, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers of the Tincan Command and the MIU of the agency for their vigilance and professional conduct, noting that the volume of recent Loud seizures highlights a coordinated attempt by international drug syndicates to flood the Nigerian market with synthetic strains of cannabis.

“This second massive seizure in less than a week is a clear message to the international syndicates who think they can use our ports as entry points for their soul-destroying trade, that the synergy between NDLEA and Customs Service as well as other security agencies and our international partners like the Canadian Royal Mounted Police, the UK-HOIO and the US DEA is yielding fantastic results. We will not rest until every link in this supply chain is broken and those behind these shipments are brought to justice,” Marwa stated.

With the same zeal, commands and formations of the agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization activities in schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week. These include WADA enlightenment lecture for students and staff of Ta’al Model Secondary School, Lafia, Nasarawa; Federal College of Education, Ilawe Ekiti; traditional rulers in Udi local government area, Enugu; Adventist Secondary Technical College, Owerrinta Isialangwa local government area, Abia; Golden Anchor Secondary School, Shomolu, Lagos; Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, Akwa Ibom; Mallam Ibrahim Islamiyya School, Rano, Kano; Isemi-Ile Grammar School, Isemi-Ile, Kajola local government area, Oyo State, among others.

While commending the officers and men of the SOU, Anambra, Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa and Lagos commands of the agency for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) noted their drug supply reduction efforts balanced with WADA sensitization activities while he charged them and their compatriots across the country to maintain the current tempo.
