Shell companies in Nigeria have teamed up with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, and other stakeholders to build Information Communication Technology, ICT, centres and a digital library in Nigerian universities this year in their continuing support for education.

Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company Limited, SNEPCo, and NNPC in collaboration with the Nigerian Content Monitoring and Development Board, NCDMB, launched a digital library at Niger Delta University, Amassoma in Bayelsa State in April, while an ICT centre was commissioned at the Sa’adu Zungur University (formerly Bauchi State University), Gadau in Bauchi State in July, by The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd, SPDC, as part of the Joint Venture with NNPC, TotalEnergies and NAOC.

In the latest intervention just last week, lecturers and students at Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, applauded as SPDC, NNPC and other Joint Venture partners collaborated with NCDMB to unveil a world-class engineering design studios and ICT hub at the institution.

“This is Shell working to power lives in Nigeria,” Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, and Managing Director, SPDC, Osagie Okunbor, said reflecting on the three facilities.

He said the projects had changed the academic and physical landscapes in the three universities and linked the students and lecturers to the global learning arena.

The facilities at FUTO include two state-of-the-art engineering design studios and a fully furnished 100-seater ICT lecture hall, equipped with computers and smartboards with dedicated power and water supplies. FUTO was selected for the project as part of the “institutional strengthening” in the catchment area of SPDC’s Assa North Ohaji South Gas Development Project. They were launched at a colourful ceremony attended by representatives of the Imo State Government and principal officers of the university.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented by the Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, Dr. Chimezie Amadi, said: “We deeply appreciate the efforts of our partners in NNPC, SPDC, Total Energies, and NAOC JV, who have invested in the future of Imo State by supporting this critical project. Your commitment to human capacity building aligns perfectly with our goals, and together, we will continue to drive innovation, skills development, and sustainable economic growth for our people.”

Okunbor’s address at the commissioning was read by General Manager, External Relations, Igo Weli, in which he expressed happiness “that the collaboration of SPDC, Joint venture partners, NCDMB, and FUTO has resulted in this successful social investment project that demonstrates our commitment to improving access to quality education for every Nigerian.”

Executive Secretary NCDMB, Engr. Felix Omatsola Ogbe, called on Nigerian institutions to domesticate the advancements in AI and other technologies.

“Our AI must understand Igbo, Hausa, Efik, Yoruba, and other local languages,” he said, speaking through Dr. Ama Ikuru, the Director in charge of Capacity Building.

He added, “We must leapfrog the innovations of other nations and become a net exporter of advanced technology to achieve the lofty ideals of Nigerian content development.”

The Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Bala Wunti, said in his address which was read by the Senior Advisor Stakeholders Relations, Mrs. Halimat Wilson: “Innovation thrives in an environment where ideas can be freely exchanged and developed. The Engineering Studio and ICT Hub is designed to be such a place where students, researchers, and faculty can collaborate on projects, share knowledge, and push the boundaries of what is possible.”

Welcoming guests earlier, FUTO Vice Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Nnenna Oti, thanked the sponsors of the project “for a landmark donation” to the university.

Shell Companies in Nigeria have been in contributing to education since the 1950s through scholarships and other initiatives.

These efforts have resulted in the award of thousands of secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship awards, provision of educational infrastructure and establishment of sabbatical and internship programmes as well as centres of excellence in several universities.

Total expenditure on direct social investments by the three Shell companies in Nigeria and their partners in 2023 was $42.2 million, a 23% increase compared to $34.29 million in the previous year.

Shell exclusively spent $14.1 million.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Communications, Media and NGO Relations Manager, Shell, Mr. Bamidele Odugbesan, said the amount was a significant mark-up in efforts by The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC,) Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd (SNEPCo) and Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) as well as their partners — Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC); TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited; NAOC and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd – to promote the socio-economic development of host communities.

The figures, contained in the recently published Shell Nigeria Briefing Notes for 2023, he said, show that the investments were in health, education, road safety and enterprise programmes.

In addition, SPDC and SNEPCo made $142 million statutory payments to the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in 2023 alone.

SPDC Director and Country Head, Corporate Relations Igo Weli, said: “Our vision for the Niger Delta is for our people to take advantage of these and other investments to improve their lives. This is why we support communities to develop their capacities for need assessment and project planning and execution. Our aim is to contribute to the sustainable development of the region through collaboration with all stakeholders.”

Since the 1950s, Shell Companies in Nigeria have also supported education through scholarships and other initiatives.

In 2023, SPDC, SNEPCo and SNG invested more than $3 million in such programmes.

SPDC paid $112.5 million while SNEPCo remitted $30 million compared to $59.04 million by SPDC and $20.73 by SNEPCo in 2022.

The contributions came from the Shell companies on behalf of themselves and their respective partners –. Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC; TotalEnergies, EP Nigeria Limited; NAOC; and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited – as statutory contributions to the interventionist agency.

“Our support for NDDC is part of our aspirations for the development of the Niger Delta which has also seen a wide range of social investments, including health and education,” SPDC Director and Country Head, Corporate Relations Igo Weli said.

“With the continuous support of our partners, we will continue to discharge our obligations to communities through statutory payments to agencies and projects executed in partnership with stakeholders,” he added.

Shell Companies in Nigeria have supported community development programmes in the country since the 1960s, benefitting many Nigerians.

Support for education has led to the award of more than 3,450 secondary school grants, 3,772 university grants and 1,062 cradle-to-career scholarship grants since 2016.

Another investment has seen the introduction of the Health-in-Motion programme, providing free medical services directly to communities.

Over one million individuals have benefitted from the programme since its inception in the early 2000s.

Also, the global Shell LiveWIRE entrepreneurship programme supported 73 businesses through training and mentorship programmes leading to 97 employment opportunities for Nigerians.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and its Joint Venture, JV, partners have signed the first basic 20-year term of Gas Supply Agreements, GSAs, for the NLNG Train 7.

They also signed 10-year term of GSAs for Trains 1, 2 and 3.

The JV partners are Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, SPDC; Total Exploration and Production Nigeria, TEPNG; Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited, NAOC, and Oando Plc.

The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Malam Mele Kyari, said that the agreement signalled commitment of all to the gas project in the country.

He said that the GSAs brought NLNG closer to taking Final Investment Decision, FID, which signalled the commencement of the project.

He said that with the agreement, the FID on train seven would be taken latest December 20.

“The Train 7 project will ramp up NLNG’s production capacity from 22 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to around 30 MTPA.

“The project will form part of the investment of over 19 billion dollars including the upstream scope of the NLNG value chain, thereby boosting the much needed FID profile of Nigeria.

“The project is anticipated to create over 10,000 new jobs during its construction phase and on completion help to further mop more gas that would have been flared and diversify the revenue portfolio of Nigeria,” he said.

The Managing Director of Shell, Mr Osagie Okunbor, said that delivering gas to train seven was an important part of the project.

He said Nigeria at that point should not be talking about train seven but should be looking at train eight to train 12.

“But what we have done here today is very significant and we believe that more will be done in the future,” he said.

Also, Patrick Olima of Total gave the assurance that the company would be committed to the supply of gas as signed in the agreement.

“We are committed in doing business in Nigeria just like we have done with Egina FPSO, we will do same with this project,” he said.

Mr Wale Tinubu, Managing Director of Oando, reiterated that his company would be committed to the agreement.

“We are happy to be part of this process,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr Tony Attah, the Managing Director of NLNG, said that signing of the agreement was a great moment for the NLNG.

He said that with FID on train seven, Nigeria was moving in the right direction.

“What we have done today is among the top three things needed before the FID is taken; without this, financiers will not come for train seven.

“We are happy with the commitment of the partners that have signed this agreement today; this agreement will further consolidate our relationship.

“We need to move fast as a country to maintain a strong position in the global space.

“Nigeria at this stage should not be talking only about train seven but we should be talking about train twelve,” he said.

He added that full implementation of the GSA would spur NLNG to build more trains.
