The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has recorded about 16,000 cases of Tuberculosis, TB, annually, with treatment success rate reaching 94 per cent.

Dr. Dan Gasama, Director of Public Health, FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, FCT-HSES, disclosed this at a community outreach to commemorate the 2026 World Tuberculosis Day on Saturday in Abuja.

The outreach was organised by FCT-HSES, Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, NTBLCP, and other partners.

Gasama said TB mortality had reduced by about 64 per cent over the years, noting that the disease remained a major public health concern globally and nationally.

“Globally, an estimated 10.7 million people fell ill with TB, with about 1.23 million deaths, including 150,000 among people living with HIV.

“With a prevalence of 219 per 100,000 population, Nigeria remains among high TB burden countries, while the FCT accounts for about 16,000 cases annually,” he said.

He added that Nigeria recorded over 467,000 TB cases in 2025, the highest ever, attributing improved detection to strengthened surveillance and community outreach.

According to him, early detection and proper treatment have contributed to the 94 per cent treatment success rate recorded in the territory.

Gasama said the FCT Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme also recorded significant progress in 2025, identifying over 40,171 presumptive cases, out of which 3,679 were confirmed and notified.

He explained that the 2026 commemoration focused on taking TB awareness, screening and treatment services to high-burden communities.

Hundreds of residents of Mabushi community benefitted from free screening for TB, malaria and other ailments, while medications were distributed and severe cases referred to hospitals.

In a goodwill message, Dr. Jenny Momoh, representing the World Health Organisation, WHO, FCT Coordinator, Dr Jibrin Alkasim, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to ending TB.

She highlighted progress in diagnostics, treatment and community-centred care, while stressing the need for sustained investment and collaboration.

“Ending TB requires sustained investment, innovation and a strong multisectoral response that leaves no one behind,” she said.

Also speaking, Mrs Teresa Jatau, Programme Manager of TB Network, underscored the role of communities in combating the disease.

She urged residents to embrace early testing and adhere to treatment, noting that TB is curable when detected early.

The 2026 World Tuberculosis Day is themed: “Yes, we can. We can end TB”.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that his government will support the evidence-led campaign of the Nigerian media against Big Tech dominance, anti-competitive activities, and the harsh economic headwinds affecting local media.

He described the press as an “indispensable partner” in the nation’s journey towards economic stability, press freedom, and social cohesion.

At a meeting at the State House on Friday, the president said his government would help dismantle the fiscal hurdles and “digital cannibalisation” currently threatening the survival of the press.

He gave this assurance during an interfaith dinner with a high-level delegation from the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), led by the NPO President and Publisher of The Guardian, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru.

The delegation also included industry leaders and patrons, among them Aremo Olusegun Osoba, publisher of Vanguard; Mr Sam Amuka, Chairman of THISDAY/ARISE News Channel; Prince Nduka Obaigbena; Chairman of Channels Television, Dr John Momoh; Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Alhaji Saliu Abdulhamid Dembos; former NPAN President and veteran journalist, Mr Ray Ekpu; President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr Eze Anaba; President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, Mr Danlami Nmodu, and President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, among others.

Also present were all executive members of NPAN, managing directors of media houses, top media practitioners across all platforms, and representatives of civil society.

President Tinubu said his government was already reviewing the tariff exemption list and would consider the inclusion of the items used by the media, such as newsprint, plates, chemicals, and radio and television broadcast equipment, which currently attract tariffs of 5 to 10 per cent.

If this happens, these items would enjoy a status similar to that of educational and research materials.

With the media industry reeling from skyrocketing newsprint and equipment costs, President Tinubu signalled his administration’s readiness to intervene by reviewing tariffs.

“You have the government’s full support, because we know how important your work is to the sustenance of democracy,” the president said.

Earlier, the Deputy President of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, NPAN, and Publisher of BusinessDay, Mr Frank Aigbogun, in a speech delivered on behalf of the NPO, accused some tech companies of increasingly “scraping” proprietary creative content to train AI models, often by breaching digital paywalls.

Aigbogun requested the president to direct the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, to work with the media to investigate complaints that Big Tech dominance and anti-competitive practices were costing local media at least 70 per cent of its legitimate income, estimated by some sources at hundreds of millions of dollars, in addition to the loss of jobs and opportunities.

Before the president’s response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the government had already begun “engaging Big Tech,” companies including Meta and Google.

“The government will not allow anybody to come here, reap from our economy, and go away without giving back,” he said.

Among other dignitaries present at the meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima, as well as senior aides and special advisers to President Tinubu.

It would be recalled that the NPO had, in January, written to the government and also published a statement complaining about the existential threat Big Tech operations pose to local media.

President Bola Tinubu has said that his administration is committed to unlocking the human and natural resource potential of Ogoniland, while ensuring the environmental and economic security of Nigerian communities.

The president stated this on Wednesday at the State House during a meeting with members of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers of Ogoni, Rivers State, led by King Samuel Nnee, Gbenemene Tai Kingdom and Paramount Ruler of Kpite Tai.

The president was responding to requests presented by the Ogoni leaders at the meeting, which was also attended by former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike; the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Engr. Abubakar Momoh; the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Heineken Lokpobiri, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.

Among the requests to the president is the resuscitation of oil and gas production in Ogoniland, which comprises the Eleme, Khana, Gokana, and Tai local government areas of Rivers State.

We must heal the wounds of the past. We must live and prepare for the future of our children, and we must be committed to uplifting the livelihoods of our people in a free Nigeria.

“This is all part of the healing process for the Ogoni people. There is equally the Ogoni clean-up programme that I inherited. That will be pursued diligently and honourably. The number of people that we will empower will increase as time goes on.

READ ALSO: Artificial Intelligence to the rescue?

“I am glad that this meeting has emphasized peace and stability through the resuscitation of businesses in Ogoniland. Without these businesses, the recovery of this country will be adversely affected.

“Safety precautions, environmental and other challenges must be looked into, and we will certainly do that.

“My unwavering dedication to freedom for all people and the value of democratic governance has not diminished because I have been elected by the people, and I have to make the people the central focus of our governance of Nigeria,” the president stated.

Having appointed his official spokesperson and most recently, the Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, from the area, the president committed to deepening collaboration with Ogoni leaders to create mutually-beneficial economic opportunities for Ogoniland and Nigeria at large.

“I am ready to work with the Ogoni people and engage with the Government of Rivers State and the people of Nigeria to ensure that we give all of you a bright future in this country,” the president affirmed.

President Tinubu commended the former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of the FCT for his dedication to alleviating the plight of the Ogoni people.

“I share the same view about Ogoniland with the Minister of the FCT. He is very much concerned about the progress, peace, and stability of Ogoni people, and he has discussed this with me on a number of occasions, and I thank him for that,” the president said.

In his remarks, King Nnee commended President Tinubu for his numerous achievements within one year in office, highlighting the ongoing construction work on the Onne-Junction/Eleme-Junction axis of the East-West Road.

“Your unspeakable dedication to service and empathy are the propelling forces behind your prompt response to our people’s yearnings which the past administrations have persistently promised and failed to meet,” he said.

According to the Paramount Ruler of Kpite Tai, previous administrations were unable to resolve the pertinent issues associated with the shutting down of oil production in Ogoniland.

He informed the president that the Ogoni people are prepared for the commencement of oil and gas production in Ogoniland with the potential unbundling of OML 11 – bearing an additional production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day and 120 million cubic feet of gas per day.

”This will contribute $5 billion per annum to Nigeria’s GDP on an asset that is currently owned 100 percent by the NNPCL.

“The people-driven vision of the Ogoni Economic Rebirth Project is the matter of the moment among our kith and kin. Our people’s hope is glowing with the expectation that the time to revitalize the economic nerves of our land is now.

“Ogoni people are gifted, peace-loving, and hospitable, and our children are making an impact across all sectors, as well as the oil industry, from where they are prepared to bring their expertise to bear for the good of our people and the entire country,” the monarch said.

The Assistant Inspector General, AIG, of Police in charge of Zone 5, Arungwa Nwazue, has taken a strong stand against land grabbing in the zone.

In a statement signed by DSP Tijani Momoh, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, ZPPRO, in the zone comprising Edo and Delta, Nwazue said henceforth, anybody involved in land grabbing would be arrested and charged to court immediately.

Momoh said following the AIG’s stance and directive, operatives of the zone had arrested and arraigned one Peter Erhinwinoese, for conspiracy, forcible entry, malicious damage and stealing.

He said the arrest and arraignment of Erhinwinoese was subject to a petition from one Samson Aiwuyor, of Amagba community, Oredo local government area, LGA, of Edo.

He said that the petitioner had alleged that he bought a land measuring 100ft X 100ft from the said Erhinwinoese, who was a chairman of Amagba community.

“After the land was surveyed and obtained, I fenced the land and started carrying out fish farming business on it.

“However, Peter Erhinwinoese, who sold the land to me, led a group of boys to the land, destroyed the fence and prevented me from accessing my fish pond.

“Consequently some of my fish in the pond were stolen, while others died as a result of inaccessibility to feed them,” the ZPPRO quoted the petitioner.

He said that the AIG, on receipt of the petition, had ordered immediate investigation, which revealed that Erhinwinoese and his boys actually stole the fish, damaged and erected another fence.

He said that after a prima facie case of conspiracy, malicious damage and stealing was established against the suspect and others now at large, he was arraigned in court on Thursday, in compliance with the directive of the AIG.

He quoted Nwazue as saying that the zone would “sustain the tempo to ensure that sanity is completely restored as regards land grabbing” in the zone.

The AIG also called on members of the public to provide useful information that would help the Police in the fight against crime and criminality.
