A new dawn awaits Nigerian youths as well as athletes as the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development is planning to create a data base that will serve as reservoir from which opportunities can be accessed.

This would also ensure that proper records are kept to enable youth derive maximum opportunities.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare said the data base would soon be created for the Nigerian Youth to address unemployment, age cheats and counter falsehood.

Speaking during the sixth edition of Town Hall Meeting on Friday, the minister reiterated that there were so many opportunities for jobs, empowerment and training for the benefit of the youth.

He explained that youths should avail themselves of the stream of opportunities and how to get trained.

“For NYIF, it is important to note that the Fund is for youth between ages 18-35. Thus if you are older than 35 years you will have difficulties in completing the application process. From time to time there are minor difficulties in the platform. We have decided to use a better platform which the federal government used to recruit people for previous programmes. This platform makes adjustments, has flexible feature and complaints can be easily taken care of,” he said.

The minister further stated that “if the application is successful, the youth would undergo another process of being trained by Entrepreneur Development Institute, EDI, who are certified trainers.”

He assured that there would be a review of the process of application to train as many people as possible to benefit from the loan.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 have warned Edo State government and the Nigerian Football Federation against breaching the COVID-19 protocol.

They said fans should not be allowed for the Nations Cup game against Sierra Leone.

In a letter to the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, the Ministry said: “The Ministry wishes to bring to your urgent attention that in compliance with the condition of no gathering agreed upon by the Ministry and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 before the Federal Government opened up football and contacts sports, the match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will not have any audience and no gathering save for players, match officials and government officials from both countries. Testings must be conducted on all of them prior to the match.

The ministry further disclosed: “The no gathering, no audience for football and contact sports is still in force. Which means there shall be no gathering for the Nigerian vs Sierra Leone match as any violation of this condition may lead to a roll back of the opening up of football and contact sports in the country.

“The PTF and the Ministry are on the same page on this matter and the protocol for clearances rests with both the Ministry and the PTF when it comes to staging any sports event in Nigeria. Full compliance with COVID-19 protocols is to be enforced.”

The PTF is worried about a spike following a second wave of COVID-19 and is considering another lockdown .

The Edo State government had announced that the gates would be thrown open to allow fans watch the game.

The match is billed for the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.
