The president gave the directive against the backdrop of Monday explosions by terrorists which left 23 persons dead and 108 injured at Maiduguri, Borno State.

He also gave the directive to emergency agencies to provide care for the injured.

In a statement he personally signed, the president described the explosions as the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they were under constant pressure from the armed forces and security agencies operating in various theatres.

He stressed that the government would continue to intensify efforts against all criminal elements, wherever they might be.

He commended the troops for repelling the attacks launched by terrorists in the state.

His words: “I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state.

“The Monday attacks were desperate acts of the evil-minded terrorist groups. Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down.

“Just last weekend, during a security meeting with leaders of security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities. This effort is already in progress.”

Tinubu warned that there would be no place in Nigeria where terrorists would find safety.

According to him, they would be located and be completely defeated.

“Nigeria will not succumb to fear,” he concluded.

The police said that suspected suicide bombers allegedly carried out the suicide attacks at 7:24 p.m..

ASP Nahum Daso, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement that preliminary investigations indicated that the explosions were carried out using improvised explosive devices, IEDs, by suspected suicide bombers.

Daso said that the incidents were carried out at the Maiduguri Central Market, popularly known as Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital’s gate, and the Post Office Flyover area of the town.

According to him, a combined team of Police Tactical Units, military personnel, and other joint security operatives was swiftly deployed to the affected areas.

The spokesperson said that the scenes were immediately secured and cordoned off, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, Unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional threats remained.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes for an on-the-spot assessment and commiserated with victims and their families.

Daso, however, assured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

The spokesperson said that victims were evacuated by emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, to medical facilities for treatment.

Daso said normalcy had been restored in the affected areas, while security had been heightened across the metropolis to forestall further incidents.

The spokesperson urged residents to remain calm and vigilant and report any suspicious movements or objects to security agencies.

Daso reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state.

Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Maiduguri.

Uba stated that the attacks occurred in the early hours of Friday when terrorists advanced in large numbers in an attempt to overrun the troops’ locations.

He said “the first attack was launched at about 2 a.m. on troops’ positions at Azir Bridge in Sector 2, while another assault was carried out at about 3.40 a.m. on the military base at Banki in Sector 1.

“Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation Hadin Kai in the early hours of today, March 13, 2026, successfully repelled coordinated terrorist attacks on troops’ positions at Azir Bridge in Sector 2 and Banki in Sector 1.”

Uba added that the terrorists, who advanced in large numbers, were met with immediate and overwhelming resistance from the troops.

He said the troops demonstrated superior tactical awareness and combat readiness, launching well-coordinated spoiling attacks that disrupted the terrorists’ assault formations.

“The engagements were further reinforced by effective close air support from the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, which contributed significantly to the successful defeat of the attackers,” he said.

He noted that the failed attacks contradicted what he described as misleading propaganda and false reports circulating on some online media platforms.

“The troops remain firmly in control of the locations and continue to dominate the operational environment with high morale, decisive firepower and sustained offensive action against terrorist elements,” he added.

He reassured the public that the Joint Task Force remained resolute in defeating terrorist threats across the theatre of operations.

The identification followed intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted on December 31, 2025, at the Kalmari area of Maiduguri, during which 14 suspects linked to suicide bombing activities were arrested.

Confirming the development on Saturday, the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, said investigations revealed that Shariff Umar played a central role in recruiting, preparing and dispatching suicide bombers, as well as coordinating logistics and delivery of improvised explosive device, IED, components.

“During the investigation, a suspected suicide bomber currently in custody, Ibrahim Muhammad, unequivocally identified Shariff Umar as the ringleader and coordinator of the terror network,” Uba said.

He disclosed that intelligence findings further established that Shariff Umar directly coordinated the suicide bombing attack at the Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, 2025, where an accomplice identified as Adamu detonated a suicide vest.

Uba added that the suspect was also linked to a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, noting that Umar personally handed over IED components to the bomber in Maiduguri before the failed attack.

According to him, investigations uncovered additional links within the network, including the involvement of Shariff Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, while his stepdaughter, Amina, confirmed having previously seen the suspect bomber within their residence.

“These revelations exposed the domestic and community-based concealment methods employed by terrorist facilitators to evade detection,” he said.

Uba said all suspects arrested in connection with the network remained in custody and were undergoing intensive, multi-layered investigations aimed at dismantling the entire cell, identifying additional collaborators and recovering any remaining explosives or logistics.

He emphasised that the breakthrough underscored the importance of sustained intelligence operations and strong cooperation between security agencies and local communities.

“Terrorist networks often survive by hiding within communities, exploiting silence, fear or misplaced loyalty. Timely information from law-abiding citizens remains one of the most powerful tools in preventing attacks and saving innocent lives,” Uba said.

The OPHK spokesman urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to security agencies, stressing that cooperation and trust between the military and civilians were critical to restoring lasting peace in the North-East.

The incident was sequel to an improvised explosive device, IED, attack by a suspected suicide bomber in Gamborun area of Maiduguri.

DSP Nahum Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Borno Command, made the confirmation in an interview in Maiduguri.

Daso said the suspected bomber detonated an IED at 6:15 p.m. during congregational prayers around Gamborun area.

According to him, five persons died on the spot, while 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

He said the injured victims were immediately evacuated to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital  for medical attention.

Daso added that operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, unit, alongside other security agencies, were deployed to the scene to secure the area, conduct checks and ensure that no secondary devices were planted.

He said the area was cordoned off as security agencies commenced investigation into the incident.

The spokesman, however, urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest security formation.

The spokesman of the command, ASP Nahum Daso, made this known in a statement in Maiduguri on Thursday.

Daso said the explosives were discovered and neutralised when Governor Babagana Zulum accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, and senior military officers embarked on a post-attack assessment visit to Mafa and Dikwa local government areas of the state.

He said the visit followed a foiled Boko Haram attack in the midnight hours of October 22 and October 23.

“The timely detection and controlled detonation of the IEDs averted potential harm to security personnel and commuters along the route,” he said.

“The police command further appreciates the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, and the sustained synergy with other security agencies in the collective effort to maintain peace and stability across the state,” he said.

The Borno Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr Usman Muhammad, made this known in a statement in Maiduguri.

Muhammad said those who died comprised five male adults, one female, two male children and one female child, while seven others sustained injuries.

“The crash involved two vehicles (a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Borno Express and a commercial Trailer).

“Eight passengers died on the spot while one died in the Specialist hospital. The injured are presently receiving treatment at the Specialists Hospital Maiduguri.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash,” the sector commander said.

He urged the motoring public to always exercise caution on the road.

The delegation was received by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, on behalf of Governor Zulum, who described the flood disaster as an act of God.

At the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El – Kanemi, the MUSWEN president expressed sadness over the disaster.

Oladejo, who doubles as the Deputy President-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, said  that “the flood disaster, which we heard also affected this hallowed palace of Your Royal Highness, brought immense anguish to residents, who were still recovering from years of insurgency.

“The disaster, which struck at a critical time has also aggravated the existing food and nutrition crisis in the North East region.

“The disaster also damaged vital infrastructure such as: Hospitals; Schools; Roads and; Bridges, cutting off connections to various outer destinations.”

Quoting from Glorious Qur’an Chapter 49 verse 10 he said, “whatever affects Muslims anywhere, affects all Muslims.”

Oladejo added that “We feel your pain; we stand with you in this difficult time and our thoughts are with those affected by the flood disaster. The flood’s impact on lives, livelihoods and infrastructure is heartbreaking.

“Let us continue to supplicate to our maker, Almighty Allah, to forgive our shortcomings, show us His Mercy and restore absolute peace to Maiduguri and Nigeria in general.”

He told the Shehu of Borno “earlier today, we had an audience with His Excellency (Hon.) Umar Usman Kadafur, The Deputy Governor of Borno State, who received us on behalf of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, mni,Executive Governor of Borno State.

“During the visit, we acknowledged the commendable efforts of His Excellency, The Governor. May Almighty Allah continue to strengthen him.

“We also made our little financial contribution to the Borno State Government towards providing for feeding and basic needs of our brothers, sisters and children affected by the flood disaster in Maiduguri, to mitigate the effect of the unfortunate incident.

“We are one and we stand with you always, Your Royal Highness.

“May Almighty Allah continue to show us His Mercy,” Oladejo prayed.

Responding, Shehu of Borno thanked the delegation for the visit and kind gesture, lamenting the huge loss the flood caused the state and said he saw it as a will of Allah.

The State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Baba Malum Gana, made this known on Monday while flagging-off an Oral Cholera, Measles Vaccination and Vitamin A supplementation in Maiduguri.

The programme was organised by Borno government in collaboration with United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF.

“With this flooding, we have four suspected cases which were confirmed on Rapid Diagnosis Test.

“The samples were sent to the National Reference Laboratory, where two cases were confirmed as positive.

“The patients have already been discharged and we have taken measures against cholera from the onset of the flood,” Gana said.

He noted that another suspected four cases had been sent to the laboratory for confirmation.

According to him, the affected camp had undergone fumigation and disinfection.

In her remarks, the UNICEF Chief, Maiduguri Field Office, Christina Valderrama, commended the leadership of Borno State government for the swift response in mitigating the impact of the flood disaster that ravaged Maiduguri.

“We recognise Borno’s flood may trigger devastating disease outbreaks, potentially causing more harm than the flood itself.

“Therefore, we come together with a shared purpose: to safeguard the health and well-being of our communities through vital vaccination and supplementation initiatives.

“As we embark on this campaign for oral cholera vaccination, measles vaccination, and vitamin A supplementation, I will emphasise the importance of these measures in securing the future of children and promoting public health.

“Let us unite to build a shield of immunity that will prevent outbreaks and save lives,” Valderrama said.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of Borno State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Prof. Mohammed Arab, described the intervention as timely and urged people to make themselves available for the vaccination.

Leadership exists not in a vacuum but in the furtherance of ideals, welfare, and the protection of lives and property. A show of compassion is an affirmation of that critical essence of leadership – to serve the people.

An unforgiving flood coursed through parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, a few days ago, displacing citizens, wolfing property and lives, and leaving a ghastly trail of devastation. According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the flood began after the Alau Dam overflowed owing to torrential rains, resulting in the state’s worst flooding in 30 years.

As the consoler-in-chief, a few short hours after he returned from his official trip abroad, President Tinubu spared no room for niceties, he travelled to Borno State to sympathise with the people, inspire hope and resilience through the rough patch, as well as provide firm assurances of support.

In Maiduguri, the president announced a relief fund to assist citizens hit by floods and other disasters. He visited the Shehu of Borno, an internally displaced persons’ camp at Government Secondary School, Maiduguri, and had an immersive assessment of the situation with a drive-through of the areas impacted by the contretemps of nature.

“After my visit to the Shehu of Borno and the IDP camp, I have been reflecting on how to tackle this kind of disaster and the effects of climate change. There must be a disaster relief fund. I will invite the private sector to team up with us and help rebuild the affected areas. If we take a small percentage from FAAC and put it as a disaster relief fund, which will include all of you, we will be activating and strengthening our sense of belonging,” the President said.

These fine examples of compassion uplift the human spirit, renew hope, and emphasise our shared humanity. They show that with composite efforts towards compassion, we can have a moment of paradise. Leadership is healing.

The President also sympathised with other states affected by flooding, stating: “For all the people of Yobe State, I sympathise with you. We will create an outstanding programme for Nigeria to recover from this calamity. We will build our nation together.’’

Of great essence is President Tinubu’s clarity and precision on a strategy to address the tragedy, to help the people build back better, and prepare for future unforeseen natural accidents.

Pending the activation of the relief fund, so far, 100 trucks of relief materials, comprising 50 trucks of maize, 30 trucks of sorghum, and 20 trucks of millet, as well as cash donations have been provided to citizens imperilled by the mishap by the federal government.

In an accustomed display of charity, Mr. Seyi Tinubu and Mr. Yinka Tinubu on Friday also led a team to Maiduguri, where they donated N500 million towards the relief effort.

Mr. Seyi emphasised the transcendence of the unity of wills and purpose at a time of great concern, such as now in Borno.

He said: “We are here today, not just as representatives of our family but as members of a collective effort of young Nigerians to bring hope and relief to those who need it most. This is a moment for solidarity, compassion, and immediate action. Maiduguri and Borno State have rich histories. The people are resilient. Despite the issues of the past few years, they have braved all odds, which is why such a painful national tragedy that befell the state deserves our collective effort, support, and prayers. Even more, it deserves our active collaboration and contributions.

‘’When my dad, President Bola Tinubu, visited Maiduguri earlier this week, he spoke about the urgent need for the private sector and individuals alike to step up in support of the communities affected. Inspired by his call, my wife Layal, and I through the Noella Foundation, my brother Yinka, our friends, and numerous private sector partners have joined hands to respond swiftly to the needs of those displaced by this tragedy.

“However, we hope this small contribution brings comfort and relief to those in need. Together, we can rebuild and heal, for in unity, there is strength. The Nigerian youth stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Borno. We are in this together, and our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Just like President Bola Tinubu said on Monday, Borno will rise again.”

Other items donated to the state include 10,000 pieces of mosquito nets, blankets, mattresses, kettles, wrappers, buckets, mats, sanitary pads and wash kits, as well as critical supplies to cover prescriptions for almost 50,000 children and adults, anti-malarials, anti-hypertensive, anti-parasitic, anti-diabetic, analgesics and antibiotics.
