Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, SNEPCo, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, last week donated an Endobronchial Ultrasound, EBUS, system and a Body Plethysmograph to the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, LUTH, enabling one of Nigeria’s foremost health institutions to provide advanced diagnostics in pulmonary or respiratory care.

The EBUS system will enable doctors to perform real-time guided biopsies and accurately stage lung cancer—an essential step in determining treatment options and timelines.

The Body Plethysmograph facilitates better diagnosis of asthma, restrictive lung diseases and related ailments.

“This is more than a donation—it is a shift,” said SNEPCo Managing Director, Ronald Adams, at the ceremony, in a speech read by Abubakar Ahmed, General Manager, Communications.

“It is a shift from constrained diagnostics to evidence-based, technology-enabled respiratory care. It empowers clinicians to practice medicine at the full height of their training and builds institutional capacity that will shape Nigeria’s healthcare landscape for generations.”

In a speech, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, NUIMS, Olanrewaju Igandan, represented by Deputy Manager, External Relations, Edith Bunmi-Lawson, said: “This initiative reflects our belief that sustainable national development goes beyond energy production. It is about improving lives, building resilient institutions and investing in systems that endure.”

The Chief Medical Director, Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, who was represented by Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of LUTH, Prof. Babawale described the donation “as a landmark event that provides access to highly specialised Pulmonology care in the public healthcare sector in Nigeria.”

He added: “This donation not only makes advanced Pulmonology care available but also makes it more affordable and convenient to access for Nigerians. We are extremely grateful for your generosity, foresightedness, commitment and trust in our hospital and its Management.”

In addition to boosting respiratory care, the donation will also enable LUTH to become a Pulmonology centre of excellence where patients can access world-class care and trainees in the field can acquire skills, even as the hospital actively participates in Pulmonology research.

The donation is part of a wide range of social investments by SNEPCo/NNPC and co-venturers in education, health and human capital development.

Resident doctors across some federal government hospitals in Lagos State have demonstrated full compliance with the five-day warning strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD.

A visit by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday to some health institutions including the Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Yaba; Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, and National Orthopedic Hospital Igbobi Lagos, NOHIL, showed full compliance, as resident doctors were not seen working.

NARD, on Friday, declared a five-day warning strike following the expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum issued to the federal government after an earlier 10-day deadline lapsed on September 10 without resolution of their demands.

The issues raised by the doctors include the non-release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, non-payment of five months arrears arising from the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, as well as outstanding specialist and hazard allowances.

The strike coincides with ongoing industrial action by resident doctors in Abuja and Oyo State, and comes after NARD issued a 10-day ultimatum to relevant government agencies over unmet demands.

The President, Association of Residents Doctors, LUTH, Dr Benjamin Uyi, urged the federal government to address the demands of resident doctors before expiration of the five-day warning strike to encourage the doctors go back to work.

Uyi said the demands of the doctors were long overdue, and should have been addressed by the government earlier before now.

READ ALSO: Amotekun arrests three suspected burglars in Osun

According to him, the demands of the doctors centered on prioritising welfare of the doctors, to make their operations more conducive and motivating.

“Any doctor whose welfare is not met is already a risk to the patients.

“For any doctor to function optimally, his/ her physical, mental health and psychosocial needs must be balanced.

“The doctors are already burnt out and faced with excessive workload and work schedule, and the government is yet to prioritise their welfare,” Uyi said.

Speaking, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, NOHIL, Dr Babatunde Egberongbe, described the incident as “unfortunate”, decrying why FG must always allow strike in the health sector.

Egberongbe, who frowned at incessant industrial actions by health professionals, said it was a major contributing factor to the migration of health practitioners to other countries.

“The poor working conditions for the doctors are the major reasons why many of them are leaving the country to practise abroad.

“Presently, there are limited number of doctors in hospitals across the country, yet the government has not deemed it necessary to prioritise their welfare and demands.

“Let the government as a matter of urgency address our demands, because we are not asking for anything extraordinary,” he said.

If like me, you have this bad habit of reading every inscription on buses or on walls, you probably would have seen this inscription on hospital walls: WE CARE; GOD HEALS!

That was what I remembered that Saturday morning in Kaduna, as I lay on the surgeon’s operating table. I silently prayed to God to take control.

Before entering the theatre, the anaesthetist had asked me what I ate that morning. I raised my eyebrows.

What kind of question is this? The medical team had warned me the previous day when I went for the pre-surgery protocols not to eat anything after 10 p.m. So, why are you asking me what I had eaten, I asked the anaesthecist.

“Oh, never mind, it’s a routine question,” he responded.

But let me begin the story from the beginning.

Some three weeks earlier, I had been having frequent heart burns. To make matters worse, my voice, which at the best of times was husky, was getting huskier.

At a point, it was difficult for me to hear myself.

I knew it was high time I visited an eye, nose, and throat (ENT) expert.

With my wife in tow, we visited an ENT consultant at her private clinic.

The lady, who is also a consultant at LASUTH, examined me and pronounced the verdict: “Video Laryngoscopy revealed fleshy mass arising from the right vocal chords. The left vocal chord is normal. He will require direct Laryngoscopy. ”

So, in a layman’s language, there is a growth in my right vocal chord that needs to be removed by surgery.

READ ALSO: Natasha, an embarrassment to Nigeria, proved Yahaya Bello right -Karimi

For a man who is comfortably sitting on the sixth floor, I told myself I wasn’t going to do a conventional surgery. I opted for a laser excision of the growth.

The problem was finding a hospital that does laser surgery on the vocal chords.

LASUTH doesn’t, LUTH doesn’t. The search then began for a hospital that does laser surgery.

I called an elderly friend in London who is an ENT surgeon on the possibility of doing the laser excision over there. When he gave me the bill, I knew that wasn’t a viable option.

He then told me that there is a very good hospital in Lekki, which he would recommend to me.

I went to Evercare in Lekki, but they, too, don’t have the facility for laser surgery.

But the female consultant who attended to me said she had heard that the facility was available in the North and that she would revert to me the next day.

She kept her word and linked me with the ENT Consultant at the Jowaco Specialist Hospital Kaduna.

Back at the operating table, many thoughts were running through my mind.

Surviving the surgery was a fifty-fifty chance.

I asked myself why I didn’t tell my creditors I was going for surgery. At least they would want me alive to be able to repay my debts. They would have invested in prayer entrepreneurs!

I stole a glance at my wife. If I didn’t come out alive, she would have to be drugged to be flown to Lagos.

My mind then went to how the newspapers would report my passage: GBEMIGA OGUNLEYE, EX NIJ PROVOST IS DEAD! GBEMIGA OGUNLEYE EX PUNCH EDITOR IS DEAD!”

Perish the thought, I told myself. Isn’t there a verse in the Bible that says: “Not my portion!”

I remembered that I had written my Will but wasn’t sure if I had filed it in the Probate registry. I consoled myself that as an Honourable poor man, there wasn’t anything really that my two children would fight over!

I became emboldened and told myself as my Christian friends would say: “I shall not die but live…”

I remembered that I was expecting my second grandchild. So, if the surgery went awry, I would be denied the privilege of seeing the baby.

Suddenly, I remembered the Christian mantra of “it’s not my portion.”

I became emboldened and told myself as my Christian friends would say: “I shall not die but live…”

My parents in heaven would see to that. My mother, especially, wouldn’t sleep. She would ensure that her son survived the surgery.

No thanks to the anaestheticia I drifted to sleep.

My wife, who witnessed the surgery, told me it lasted for about 90 minutes, but I didn’t come around until about five hours later.

If you know the number of people who didn’t wake up after surgery, you will understand why songs of praise and Thanksgiving have been on my lips.

Indeed, the Lord is good!

A Consultant Pathologist, Dr Abidemi Omonisi, has revealed that Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, has recorded 300-child cancer cases in one year.

Omonisi made the revelation on Tuesday in Abuja at the in-country mission Programme Action for Cancer Therapy, impact, review.

imPACT, a division of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, assesses countries’ cancer control capabilities, identifies challenges, and informs them of gaps to aid future cancer control plans and implementation.

According to Omonisi, the recorded cases indicate an increase in childhood cancers in Nigeria, warranting prominence and attention.

As former Acting Director of the National System of Cancer Registry at the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, NICRAT, Omonisi noted that focus had primarily been on breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

“However, our registry data shows that children also suffer from cancer, including inherited cases.

“During my consultancy visit to LUTH, we discovered a changing trend.

“Previously dominant Burkitt lymphoma has given way to methodological malignancy, specifically leukemia.”

Omonisi said that the LUTH registry would serve as Nigeria’s first population-based childhood cancer registry, providing robust data for analysis.

READ ALSO: Epe land dispute: Lagos, ex-S’Court justice, monarch, others dragged to court

He further said that by December, the collected data would be analysed, and findings would inform policy suggestions to the government.

Omonisi said the aim was to duplicate the childhood cancer registry in all six geopolitical zones.

Laura Haskins from the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, stated that the review, requested by the federal government, aimed to analyse Nigeria’s cancer control capacities and needs.

“The IAEA, WHO, and IARC provide technical support to countries strengthening their cancer control.

“We acknowledge Nigeria’s existing capacity and seek to tailor our assessment to its specific needs.”

Prof. Musa Ali-Gombe, Director of Clinical Services at NICRAT, explained that the meeting’s objective was to engage stakeholders in Abuja and nationwide on their roles, challenges, and gaps in cancer control activities.

“Participants include academic institutions, medical professional associations, NGOs, and CSOs involved in cancer advocacy.

“This collaboration will produce a comprehensive document for the government to implement suggested improvements.”

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that his government is planning to establish a Sovereign Investment Fund for strategic investments into the future.

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the executive management of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, led by its Managing Director/CEO, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, at Lagos House, Marina.

The governor charged the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority to consider investing in the Lekki Airport, Rail, Film City and Food Logistics hub projects of the Lagos state government.

He said: “We, as a subnational, are planning to set up Sovereign Investment Fund and it is not out of place because we also realised that the Sovereign Fund is critical. It is critical because you can starve yourself a little bit to provide for the future by setting something aside for the future. I think it is always a prudent thing to do. It is not out of place for subnationals to have funds working for today and for the future.

“I am aware you (NSIA) have a massive oncology center in LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital). We believe Lagos actually requires about four or five of such facilities across the state. So, we as a government are planning to support another investor to set up another one so that we can have a way to meet the growing needs of our citizens to reverse medical tourism.

READ ALSO: NOVA Bank begins operations as a national commercial bank

“In Lagos, we pride ourselves on being able to do more if we can get the resources to work with. We have an airport project that we have conceived and are pushing to get financial closure. You can take on the project.

“We also have rail projects (Blue and Red lines) that we have done. There are other rail projects that we’ve designed that will help improve public transportation in Lagos.

“We have Film City in Lagos, which is a massive entertainment city that we are planning to build. It is the future of the creative industry. These are investments we have in Lagos you might look at.”

Speaking earlier, Umar-Sadiq said NSIA was an institution established by law to manage funds on behalf of future generations of Nigerians.

He disclosed that the fund last year made about N1.6 trillion in total comprehensive income and N200 billion in terms of core earnings.

He said: “Lagos continues to be the core jurisdiction for a lot of our infrastructural activities. We have a lot of investments and infrastructural development in the areas of health, agriculture, and technology in Lagos State.

“NSIA will continue to ensure that we operationalise ourselves to be essentially the asset manager of choice for both the federal and state governments in Nigeria.

“We will continue to put ourselves forward for use by both state and federal government actors, as the case may be. We can leverage for the benefit of the Center of Excellence.”

Police spokesman in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Saturday, said that the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, reported the attempt to the police on Friday.

He said the chief security officer at the hospital reported to the police that the mother brought her one-year-and-seven months’ old daughter to the hospital for treatment.

He added that the mother confessed to a doctor at the hospital that she gave the child “Sniper’’ to drink on Sunday when her convulsion was not abating.

“The mother said she gave the liquid to her child so she could rest from her excessive convulsions.

“Detectives were immediately dispatched to the hospital where they met the baby receiving treatment.

“The mother has been taken in for investigation after the child had received treatment,’’ Hundeyin said.

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, on Tuesday said the it had recorded a milestone with its first minimal access surgery on a 13-day old baby girl.

Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chief Medical Director of LUTH, said at a media briefing in Lagos, that the surgery was the first of its kind in any public hospital in the country.

Adeyemo said the thoracoscopic primary repair of the Esophageal Atresia and Tracheosophageal Fistula was successfully carried out on the baby by a team of experts at the hospital.

Esophageal Atresia, EA, and Tracheoesophageal Fistula, TEF, are rare conditions that develop before birth.

Both life threatening conditions occur together and affect the development of the esophagus (food pipe), and should be treated shortly after birth.

According to him, the surgery was made possible due to the increased funding by the federal government, the Health Ministry and public, private partnership.

“This minimal access surgery has further showcased the effort of the federal government through LUTH to ensure Nigerians have access to affordable and quality healthcare.

“This surgery is the first of its kind in any tertiary institution in Nigeria with the use of thoracoscopic equipment.

“We have the expertise here in Luth and surgeries like this are highly subsided by the federal government for Nigerians to benefit and get the healthcare they need in the country without travelling abroad.

“I want to also commend Dr Igwe of Evercare Specialist Hospital for his willingness to share his expertise and experience with our surgeons,” he said.

Speaking also, Dr Felix Alakaloko, a paediatric consultant who led the surgery, said the success of the procedure was a major feat for the institution.

Alakaloko said the baby that was 13 days old when operated on was doing fine and would be discharged on March 6.

He noted that such surgeries cost between N6 million and N15 million in private hospitals or outside the country, compared to N300,000 charged at LUTH.

“This baby was brought to LUTH when she was nine days old with a blocked Esophagus, (that is the pipe that carries food to the stomach) and needed urgent surgery.

“The baby was choking on feeding and bringing out mucus from the nose and mouth which indicated that there was a blockage in the tube that connects food to the stomach.

“So, we reconnected the tube through a minimal access surgery instead of doing an open surgery that could endanger the life of the child,” he said.

He urged parents to observe their newborn babies to detect any abnormalities and present them on time.

Mrs Adeyinka Shola, the mother of the baby, commended LUTH for the life-saving surgery performed on her daughter.

Shola said her baby, who turned 24 days old on Tuesday, was doing fine and ready to go home.

“I’m indebted and grateful to LUTH for saving the life of my baby girl, I noticed she was not doing fine four hours after I gave birth to her.

“We were referred to LUTH for further investigation on her health, and I am happy that she has improved tremendously after the surgery.”

President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of key health infrastructure and equipment across the six geo-political zones of the country.

The action was said to be in line with his administration’s vision of overhauling the health and social welfare sector for enhanced service delivery to all Nigerians.

The announcement of the approval was made on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement he issued.

He said upgrading health infrastructure and equipment was a top priority of President Tinubu’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

To advance the landmark effort, according to him, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, NSIA, would carry out the comprehensive upgrading of cancer-treatment infrastructure and other critical developments in six tertiary hospitals across several geopolitical zones, in addition to the full renovation and expansion of prior investments to improve broad-based access to high-quality healthcare in all six geo-political zones of the federation.

He said the teaching hospitals across geo-political zones marked for the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centres per facility as part of President Tinubu’s bid to ensure that world class cancer diagnosis and care was accessible across the country were: University of Benin Teaching Hospital; Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital; University of Nigeria (Nsukka) Teaching Hospital; Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina; University of Jos Teaching Hospital and Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

He added that the critical health care service expansion projects across the fields of radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterization will be carried out in ten hospitals across all geo-political zones.

The hospitals he said were North-West: Reference Hospital, Kaduna — (Radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology); South-East: Medical Diagnostic Centre Complex, Enugu — (Radiology, clinical pathology, medical & radiation oncology); North-West: Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto — (Diagnostic and intervention radiology, clinical pathology, and cardiac catheterization); South-West: University College Hospital, Ibadan — (Diagnostic and intervention radiology, clinical pathology, and cardiac catheterization) and South-South: University of Uyo Teaching Hospital — (Radiology and clinical pathology).

Others he said were North-East: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi — (Radiology and clinical pathology); South-South: Federal Medical Centre, Asaba — (Radiology and clinical pathology); North-Central: Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre Complex, Ilorin — (Radiology and clinical pathology); North-Central: Jos University Teaching Hospital — (Radiology and clinical pathology) and North-East: Federal Medical Centre, Nguru — (Radiology and clinical pathology)

“These critical projects, set to be delivered within 12-18 months, will improve screening and diagnostics for communicable and non-communicable diseases; reduce mortality rates and improve outcomes for non-communicable diseases; create considerable employment opportunities for clinical, administrative, and managerial personnel across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, all while building the capacity of clinical personnel in advanced procedures, diagnostics and treatment modalities, in accordance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” Ngelale said.

There is tension at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, Lagos, as some staff have challenged the process of appointing the Acting Chief Medical Director, Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo, as the substantive Chief Executive Officer.

Acting under the aegis of Concerned Staff of LUTH, the staff have, through their lawyer of the The Advocate Law Firm, hinged their protest on the appointment process which they claimed was fraught with irregularities.

The letter of appointment said to be made based on the faulted process and signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, it was gathered, is to be dispatched today.

The said letter, which has been widely circulated, was dated May 8, 2023, weeks to the expiration of the Buhari administration, but could not be acted upon more than one week after the former president handed over to the new helmsman, President Bola Tinubu.

A copy of the said letter of appointment was issued and signed by the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, and backdated to take effect from March 24, 2023, for an initial four-year term.

In the petition to the Federal Ministry of Health, for the protesting staff, the law firm, whose Principal Partner is Daniel Gbolade Odubitan, accused the former Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, of masterminding the plot to impose Prof Adeyemo at all cost as the substantive CMD of the hospital.

The concerned staff are insisting that the health ministry should put on hold the planned dispatch of the appointment letter since the outcome of the selection interview process was not released before the Buhari administration wound up.

Their argument is that the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should halt the process so that the irregularities complained about officially since April this year be looked into.

To them, part of the irregularities included alleged unfair over-scoring of the marks allotted to a particular candidate in order to impose him as CMD at all cost.

The Ag. CMD took over in March this year from the former helmsman, Prof. Chris Bode, who had served from 2017 to 2023, the same period when Prof Adeyemo served under him as Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC)

The federal government on Tuesday advised Nigerians to make healthy food choices to curb the increasing trend of cardiovascular health problems which pose high burden on health systems.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunimbe Mamora, gave the advice at the National Summit on Food Drinks and Cardiovascular Health in Nigeria organised by the Nigerian Heart Foundation, NHF, in Lagos.

Mamora, who was represented by Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, CMAC, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, said that cardiovascular diseases could be controlled to a large extent by making healthy food choices.

The minister applauded stakeholders for joining hands to create awareness on the importance of food choices on health, particularly cardiovascular health.

“We should have control over what we eat. We know that many of these non-communicable diseases are related to what we do, what we eat and what we drink,” Mamora said.

He said the summit was organised in furtherance of the recent World Health Assembly which endorsed the Non-Communicable Diseases Action Plan 2020-2030.

Mamora said that the recommendation promoted healthy diets by member states, international partners and non-governmental organisations.

He said that the Nigerian Policy and Strategic Plan of Action on Non-Communicable Diseases, NCDs, was being documented by the Federal Ministry of Health.

He said that the document, when finalised, would look at different ways to manage NCDs.

Mamora said that NCDs was a rising cause of morbidity and mortality in the country.

According to him, the nation needed integrative collaboration to deliver quality, accessible and affordable health services to Nigerians, given its recent national experience with COVID-19 pandemic from 2019-2022.

The minister, however, noted that the Federal Ministry of Health had made some remarkable progress since the establishment of the NCD division in 1989.

Mamora said the ministry had created a Cardiovascular Health Unit among other interventions to curb the group of diseases.

He listed such interventions to include the National Multi-Sectoral Action Plan 2012-2025 for the prevention and control of Non-Communicable Diseases, of which cardiovascular disease was a key priority.

Mamora added that the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 to legally enforce implementation of tobacco control measures remained a huge feat, since tobacco was a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

“We know this is a giant step in line with global practice but there are huge gaps to be bridged.

“The recent introduction of fiscal measures on taxation on tobacco, non-alcoholic drinks and sugar-sweetened beverages is another measure.

“We hope the funds accruing from these will be mainly dedicated to the prevention and care of people living with NCDs,” he said.

Mamora called for actionable plans to further advance sustainable health interventions especially in the area of cardiovascular health through the media, research, manufacturing industries and consumer interactions.

He said that the Federal Ministry of Health, International Agencies and other Policy Makers would be keenly interested in the recommendations at the end of the summit.

Highlighting the objectives of the summit, Dr Kingsley Akinroye, the Executive Director of NHF, said it was to promote awareness on the rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria.

Akinroye added that the summit was also to review the current data on national and global trends of the impact of food and drinks on cardiovascular health and to identify intervention measures.

According to him, there was no doubt that people were contacting heart diseases everyday, hypertension, heart attacks, kidney failure, brain diseases, stroke and others, hence the need to tackle the causes.

In his remarks, Dr Olufemi Mobolaji-Lawal, the chairman of NHF’s Executive Council, said that people needed to cut down on intake of sugar, salts and food high in cholesterol.

According to him, there is an urgent need to dissuade people from taking sweet things.

Also, Mr Ambrose Oruche, the Director, Corporate Services, Manufacturer Association of Nigeria, MAN, said that the body was in collaboration with National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and Standard Organisation of Nigeria to protect public health.

Earlier, the president of NHF, Mallam Ismaila Shuaibu, said that the summit was to ascertain the roles of the different stakeholders/sectors in proffering solutions to curb the scourge of cardiovascular diseases.

The summit brought together stakeholders from government, international organisations, civil society organisations, private sector and the academia, among others.
