The governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday charged the Commonwealth’s 56 member states to invest in Africa, particularly Lagos, by bringing their capital, technology and other expertise.

He promised that they would find not just market and opportunity but partner and relationship.

He said the Commonwealth’s greatest advantage is not simply its shared language, shared laws or shared history but its people, noting that nowhere is that advantage more vivid, dynamic or consequential than in Africa.

Speaking as a Keynote Speaker at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit held at Mansion House, London, on Monday, Governor Sanwo-Olu said Lagos was ready for partnerships and relationships with global investors.

The theme of the opening session is “The Commonwealth’s Advantage”.

The event was attended by the chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Lord Marland; Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Botchwey; Deputy Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Ian Borg; Lady Mayor of the City of London Corporation, Dame Susan Langley; Heads of Government; Ministers; High Commissioners; Captains of Industry; Global Investors; and Business Leaders, among others.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “Africa is home to the world’s youngest population. By 2050, one in four people on this earth will be African. The Commonwealth already counts 56 member states with a combined population of 2.7 billion.

“A significant and growing share of that number lives on our continent. If the Commonwealth is to remain relevant — not merely as a sentimental compact, but as a genuine engine of global trade and investment — then Africa must be central to its strategy. And within Africa, Lagos must be part of that conversation.

“We live in an age of fracturing — of retreating globalisation, of tariff walls rising like storm barricades, of geopolitical uncertainty that rattles supply chains and spooks investors. In such a moment, the Commonwealth offers something rare and valuable: a network built not on fear, but on trust.

“Fifty-six nations that share foundational commitments — to the rule of law, to democratic governance, and to open markets — constitute a remarkable platform for doing business with confidence. The Commonwealth’s advantage will only be fully unlocked when we treat emerging markets not as recipients of investment but as partners in shaping the terms of it.

“That is why we welcome frameworks like blended finance and support AfCFTA — the African Continental Free Trade Area — which has the potential to create the world’s largest single market by GDP coverage. And that is why Lagos is investing in its port, its airport, its rail corridors, and its technology infrastructure — because we understand that to attract global capital, you must first build the foundations that make capital feel at home.”

Speaking about Lagos State and his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to over 20 million residents through the THEMES+ developmental agenda, Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “Lagos is Nigeria’s economic capital. It generates roughly a third of Nigeria’s GDP, and, were it a standalone economy, it would rank among the top five in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2023, we were re-elected on a mandate to deepen what we had started – to transform Lagos into a twenty-first-century megacity that works for its people.

“We are delivering on that mandate. Amongst many other things, our Blue Line and Red Line rail projects are now operational — the first metro rail system in West Africa. We are about to commission one of the continent’s largest children’s hospitals, and we are digitising our revenue and land administration systems.

“We have invested heavily in road infrastructure, in water, in security, and in social inclusion. And we are doing this not simply by waiting for government budgets but by actively courting, structuring, and sustaining public-private partnerships with investors from across the Commonwealth and beyond.

“Our T.H.E.M.E.S.+ Agenda — covering Transportation, Health, Education, the Economy, the Making of a 21st Century State, Entertainment and Tourism, Security, and critically, the ‘+’ of social inclusion, gender equity, and youth empowerment — is not a campaign document. It is a governance architecture. And I say to every investor in this room: that architecture is open for business.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that the state would host Invest in Lagos 3.0, which is its flagship investment promotion summit, on June 8 and 9 at the Eko Hotels and Suites in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.

He said the edition would be convened in strategic partnership with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.

He said: “Invest in Lagos is not a conference. It is a transaction platform and the premier occasion through which Lagos State formally engages the global investment community—presenting the State’s economic potential, its enabling policy environment, and the specific, bankable opportunities available to domestic and foreign investors across every major sector of our economy.

“Invest in Lagos 3.0 represents a decisive step forward in scale and ambition. Our partnership with CWEIC means that for the first time, the summit will be actively positioned to attract international delegates and investors from across the Commonwealth – expanding its reach, deepening its impact, and firmly situating Lagos within the broader architecture of Commonwealth trade and investment.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, while speaking during a plenary session tagged “Mobilising Capital for Growth in Emerging Markets”, delved into the practical terms about what Lagos is doing and what the state needs from the community of nations.

Being a speech by His Majesty, King Charles lll, at the state banquet in honour of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, at Windsor Castle, on Wednesday 18th March 2026.

Your Excellency, Mr President, and Distinguished First Lady,

Ekabo. Se Daaa Daa Ni. (Greetings! I hope you are well.)

My wife and I are delighted to welcome you to Windsor Castle here on this occasion. We are most grateful to you for travelling during this holy month which, I acknowledge, is no small sacrifice, and so it is my particular pleasure to wish you, Mr President, peace, blessings, and an abundance of joy.

Ramadan Mubarak!

During my most recent visit to Nigeria in 2018, when I was fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with your highly respected traditional leaders, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Ooni of Ife, Onitsha, Warri, and The Emir of Kano, it was self-evident that while the warmth of the Nigerian welcome remains constant, the country itself is transforming at a remarkable pace. Nigeria hasn’t merely changed. It has arrived. Yours is now a nation of over two hundred and thirty million people, half of whom are under eighteen, with the energy, ingenuity, ambition and resolve to address the great challenges of our age.

We in the United Kingdom are blessed that so many people of Nigerian heritage, having chosen Britain as their home, are now at the heart of British life through excelling at the highest levels of business, technology, academia, law, science, sport, literature and the arts, and public service.

I have met so many of these quiet heroes in our schools, businesses, National Health Service and universities, including countless young people who have flourished through the work of my King’s Trust over the last fifty years. Only last week, I was delighted to host a rather lively group of them for a ‘Jollof and Tea’ Party, at St. James’s Palace. I was firmly assured that the Jollof was only the best: Nigerian, of course… or perhaps Ghanaian or Senegalese. Diplomatically I cannot remember!

But who could have imagined that, when I first visited Nigeria thirty-six years ago today, so many of those I might have met would have gone on to have such an impact in the United Kingdom. From Afrobeats filling our concert halls and Nollywood captivating our screens, to stars competing in our Premier League and adjudicating our highest courts, so much of Britain’s culture is, in truth, profoundly enriched by Nigeria. Whether they are Nigerians who have chosen Britain as their adopted place to invest, trade or study, or Britons who cherish their personal connection to Nigeria, they all represent a living bridge of over half a million people who connect our nations, Mr President, and help make our cultures richer, our shared security stronger and our economies more prosperous.

We are proud that so many great examples of this living bridge join us this evening.

As the connections between our nations deepen every day, so too do the economic ties. Your visit has provided the opportunity to celebrate the fact that Nigeria is investing in Britain’s future as much as Britain is investing in Nigeria’s – leading Nigerian banks have chosen the City of London as a global base, examples of the best Nigerian companies have listed on London’s Stock Exchange, and U.K. Export Finance is supporting investment in Nigeria’s ports. In education, British schools and universities are opening their doors in Nigeria, and British and Nigerian technology companies are forming ever closer partnerships. I was pleased to see that visitors from Nigeria spent £178 million in Britain in 2024, and 251,000 people from Britain travelled to Nigeria and spent just as much, in return. In January of this year, Nigeria became the United Kingdom’s biggest export market in Africa and whilst I hear that in Nigeria the phrase ‘Made in U.K.’ has always symbolised the highest quality, it evidently now has a distinctively Nigerian flavour…

The friendship between our two countries, Mr President, is a partnership of equals that has brought us both enormous benefits. It has been described to me as a deeply spiritual connection – beyond churches and mosques – a deep bond through which we have strengthened our shared security, ensured our economies are more prosperous, and empowered each other to believe in a more hopeful future.

The many dynamic connections between our two nations have deep roots and yet I do not pretend that those roots are without a shadow. There are chapters in our shared history that I know have left some painful marks. I do not seek to offer words that dissolve the past, for no words can. But I do believe, as I know you believe, Mr President, that history is not merely a record of what was done to us – it is a lesson in how we go forward together to continue building a future rooted in hope and growth for all, and worthy of those who bore the pains of the past.

This afternoon, in another part of the Castle, Mr President, you and I witnessed one such example of how we are learning from one another when we met leaders of the British Christian and Muslim communities. The gathering was a deeply meaningful symbol of what Nigeria has long shown: that people of different faiths can, do, and must live alongside one another, in peace, in harmony and in shared purpose. It was also a timely reminder of the importance of standing with you – and in us strengthening your Quick Reaction Forces, or in providing food, nutrition and protection services in Northern Nigeria – when challenges disturb the age-old balance between these communities.

Your nation, Mr President, is an economic powerhouse, a cultural force and an influential diplomatic voice from a continent that is playing an increasingly important role in the world. In a vastly interconnected global environment, one that is changing at unimaginable speed, that leadership brings responsibility – and opportunity. I heed the Yoruba wisdom – and forgive me if I say it in English… that “rain does not fall on one roof alone”. As you observed so astutely before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in 2024, “if we didn’t have this global alliance… of fifty-six member states, 2.7 billion people and a combined G.D.P. forecast soon to surpass twenty trillion U.S. dollars… there would be a need to create one”. I believe firmly that, when rain clouds gather, we can tighten the grip of friendship between us and, in so doing, reinforce the central role of the Commonwealth in our shared future.

As the world changes, these are lessons we must heed now more than ever. As the Hausa saying goes, “when the music changes, so does the dance”. We can learn from Nigeria, and the best of the U.K. and Nigeria’s partnership, and harness the advantage that comes from our common languages, our similar legal systems, and the web of cultural ties and spiritual connections that provide such deep trust between us, and look to the future and learn new dance steps, together.

Mr President, you have spoken, in particular, of the importance of expanding intra- Commonwealth trade by creating shared standards, regulatory and digital alignment, and removing barriers that deter investment – as the U.K. and Nigeria’s Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership is just such an example – so that our economies can grow, in harmony with Nature, and create the millions of jobs our citizens need. So as we look towards C.H.O.G.M this year, I hope far from being past its time we can demonstrate that the Commonwealth’s time has come, as you so rightly said. In achieving that, my wife and I will gain strength from seeing Nigeria take her rightful place at the heart of the Commonwealth and to standing alongside you as a friend, who believes the future is best when built together. As the Igbo say, “Knowledge is never complete two heads are better than one”.

So as I close, Mr President, in anticipation of Eid El-Fitr in Nigeria and across the world, I can only wish you and the millions of Muslims in our countries, Eid Mubarak.

And, in doing so, let me propose a toast,

To the President and people of Nigeria –

“Naija No Dey Carry Last!” (Nigerians Never Come Last)

The Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, English Assembly District, Itire, Lagos is organising a commendation service in honour of Pastor Elijah Oguntade, who died in London, UK, on July 18, aged 73.

Oguntade was ordained a pastor of CAC while at the Christ Apostolic Church, English Assembly in 1999, and he diligently served the Lord in several capacities before relocating to London in 2003.

He also served at a number of churches in London before settling at CAC, Surrey Docks DCC of Anosike Region in the UK.

He was a highly revered man of God widely noted for his kindness, selflessness, humility, generosity and a burning passion for the work of God.

The late pastor was also an IT guru who co-founded the IT firm, Remsund Nigeria Limited, with his childhood friend and brother-in-law, Pastor Remi Collins.

Before he relocated to the UK about two decades ago, they engineered the ASYCUDA software system deployed to the Lagos ports for use by the Nigerian Customs Service.

READ ALSO: Falcons, D’Tigress and the shame of our empty hospitals

Son of a pastor, Oguntade was a foundation Elder of CAC’s first ever purely English-speaking assembly founded by the Itire District in Lagos, and was instrumental to its subsequent growth into a district with several branches after hosting the first branch at his personal house in Ikate area of Surulere, Lagos.

He left Nigeria to settle in the UK with his entire family around 2003 and kept the fire of his service aglow through a productive partnership with Pastor Emmanuel Olusegun Medaiyese, pioneering Minister of the CAC at Surrey Docks, London, and foundation Chairman of the Anosike Region covering UK and Europe.

He is survived by his wife, Funmilayo Oguntade, and their children and grandchildren.

The CAC English District, Itire, Lagos, has rolled out plans for a commendation service in his honour, at 5 p.m., on Tuesday, August 12.

Venue is the CAC English District Headquarters at 3, Adefimihan Street, Off Itire-Mushin Road, Lagos.

An online posting by his family said: “Pastor Oguntade dedicated his life to the service of his community and faith, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and spiritual guidance.

“He was more than a Pastor; he was a beacon of hope and support for countless individuals and families. His commitment to his faith and his community was unwavering, fostering an environment of growth and understanding. He is remembered not only for his spiritual leadership but also for his kindness, integrity, and the gentle strength he provided to those around him.

“While we reflect on his extraordinary journey, we also recognize the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. Pastor Oguntade nurtured relationships that spanned generations, fostering a spirit of unity and resilience among his parishioners, friends, and family. His legacy will continue to inspire us to live with grace, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to our values.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, made this known on Thursday in a press statement.

He said the president’s absence from the country remained temporary and in line with the communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks.

The president, Onanuga stated, left Paris for London at the weekend and had maintained constant communication with key government officials, overseeing critical national matters, including directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country.

A woman in London has been mauled to death by her two registered extra large bully dogs in the latest tragedy involving the banned breed, the police said on Tuesday.

The woman, in her 50s, was fatally attacked in Hornchurch, a suburb in East London.

Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene and the two registered dogs were seized after being contained in a room.

Since February 1, it became a criminal offence to own the extra large bully breed in England and Wales without an exemption certificate.

Anyone who owns one of the dogs must have had the animal neutered, have it micro-chipped and keep it muzzled and on a lead in public, among other restrictions.

The British government’s move to ban extra large bullies followed a series of attacks by the larger and more muscular version the American Bully breed.

The breed is relatively new.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 16 deaths due to dog attacks in 2023, a sharp rise from preceding years where the number had been in single figures.

As of late 2023, around 60 per cent of dogs held in police kennels were a bull breed of some kind.

The attack in Hornchurch comes after a mother and son were jailed a week earlier when an eight year old boy was injured in a savage and sustained attack by their extra large bully.

The boy suffered extensive injuries to his scalp, face and hands in the attack in the communal area of a block of flats in Merseyside, England on February 10.

Kogi indigenes and concerned Nigerians gathered under the banner of the “Alliance For Emancipation and True Change” to stage a peaceful protest in the United Kingdom, calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, remains impartial and free from political interference.

They raised concerns that the commission, with the handling of the corruption allegations against the former Governor of Kogi State, had given the impression of political persecution to Nigerians and the international community.

During the protest, held in London on May 20, 2024, the demonstrators stressed the importance of a fair and just prosecution process, in line with the rule of law, and condemned the alleged use of the EFCC by politicians to intimidate and harass perceived opponents.

They cautioned against the politicization of the EFCC’s activities and called for a review of its operating procedures to ensure transparency and accountability.

Speaking during the procession, Dr Shaibu Ojogbane, Publicity Secretary of the Alliance For Emancipation and True Change, and Chukwunonso Ezeani, Director of Research & Public Affairs, reiterated the alliance’s support for the government’s anti-corruption efforts but called for greater oversight to prevent selective justice and abuse of human rights.

The group said, “The protest against the former governor today, apparently sponsored by the Opposition in the state, indicates desperation on their part. We are aware that at least one of the opposition candidates is currently in London.

”Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello has restated his readiness to answer questions regarding his period of leadership in Kogi State; all he asks for is that the rule of law be adhered to, as it is glaring that in this particular case, the commission is serving the interest of some powerful Nigerians beyond the eye meets.

READ ALSO: Again, court refuses Kanu bail, orders him to enter his trial

”With this in mind, we state without any fear of contradiction that the commission must be called to order without delay.

”We trust that Mr President will act swiftly so this situation doesn’t degenerate into a massive calling out of the government on matters related to selective justice, abuse of human rights and other issues associated therein.”

They urged the president to intervene promptly to prevent further damage to the government’s reputation and ensure the EFCC operates with integrity and impartiality.

According to them, the Opposition had also continued to ride on the activities of the EFCC to malign former Governor Bello by sponsoring ethnic onslaught against him even outside the country.

The protesters said they deemed it important to stage a peaceful protest on the side of justice so that Nigerians were not misled by a few people.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, among others, paid a courtesy visit at Lagos House, Marina.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said President Bola Tinubu was aware that Pelumi Nubi was back in the country, and the president was willing to meet her.

He said Lagos’ gesture to the 28-year-old Pelumi was not really about the gifts and heroic welcome given to her, but to encourage more women to break barriers and compete favourably with their male counterparts in any sphere of life.

“Your experience and journey, which lasted over 68 days, are indeed very inspirational, and you have actually shifted mountains. This is indeed a true African and Lagos spirit that you demonstrated. It is a true Nigerian capability that you have demonstrated, but more importantly, this is a story of Lagos no dey carry last.

“For us in Lagos, we will work with your planners to see how we further celebrate you. And it is not really about you being the one celebrating; it is about the future. It is about the girl-child. It is about the power of possibilities. It is about the power of the mind. You are a complete African story that we can showcase,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.

Responding to the good gesture by the Lagos State government, the visibly delighted Pelumi Nubi, who could not contain her tears of joy, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu and the state government for making her Lagos Tourism Ambassador and giving her a car and a house.

She said, “Honestly, it is just amazing feelings. I wasn’t expecting this; it was just supposed to be a courtesy visit to thank the governor for his kindness so far. So, making me a Lagos Tourism Ambassador and giving me a car, house, and many more blows my mind. I am so grateful.

“Honestly, I feel so blessed as a Lagosian. I feel so blessed that I have done this London to Lagos road trip, and my sincere thanks to Governor Sanwo-Olu, President Bola Tinubu, and everyone that has made this happen. My advice to the youth, especially girls, is, Go for it.”

Nubi appreciated Nigerians, particularly Lagos residents, for supporting her and for trooping out in large numbers to welcome her at the Nigeria/Benin Republic in Seme Border in Lagos State.

She promised that the end of her solo trip would gear her up to promote the Africa continent, Nigeria, and Lagos, especially being the commercial nerve centre of the country.

Also speaking, the CEO/Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa applauded Pelumi for her bravery and courage, noting that her car for the trip would be placed in the Lagos Museum.

She said the Nigerian government was solidly behind her throughout the journey, which lasted over two months.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, said Pelumi was a role model to the young generation, and that was why the institution celebrated her entry into Nigeria on Sunday.

She commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos government for giving Pelumi a hero’s welcome, saying the University of Lagos was proud of her.

Pelumi’s father, Prof. Timothy Nubi, also appreciated President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and all the government officials and institutions at the federal and state levels for their support during her daughter’s solo drive trip from London to Lagos.

Pelumi Nubi began her solo trip from London, the United Kingdom, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, and arrived in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 7, 2024.

Nubi’s road manifest from the United Kingdom took her through France and Spain in Europe and into Africa through Morocco.

She drove across Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and finally Lagos, Nigeria.

The 28-year-old Nubi was given a hero’s welcome at the Seme border, Badagry on Sunday by hundreds of Lagos residents, who trooped out to celebrate her courage and determination in setting a record as the first black woman to drive from London to Lagos.
