The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, announced the indefinite suspension of five local government caretaker chairmen and eight local council development area in the state with immediate effect.

It also directed the affected caretaker chairmen to hand over to their secretary to the local government in their council so as not to create any vacuum.

The House, during its plenary on Tuesday, hinged the indefinite suspension of the thirteen caretaker chairmen on their failure to submit the report of the status of earth moving equipment in their respective councils to the House as requested and directed .

The House had on two occasions directed all council chairmen in the state to submit the report and gave October 23, 2020 as deadline for the submission of the report.

The affected local government caretaker chairmen include those of Ido; Oluyole; Ibadan North East; Itesiwaju, and Oyo East.

The affected local council development areas affected are Akinyele East; Lagelu West; Soro; Ogbomoso Central; Ogbomoso South; Ajorosun; Ibarapa North West, and Oyo South East.

The Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, in his remarks, said the affected caretaker chairmen demonstrated gross incompetence over their failure to bring a simple report on the state of earth moving equipment in their different domains, stating that the House was really disappointed in their action while the people had also lost faith in their ability and competence.

He said, “In section 21 of the local government law , it says without prejudice to the provisions of this law and sequel to the petition received by the State House of Assembly and upon investigation, any culpable Chairman or Vice Chairman shall be recommended for suspension or removal by a resolution of the House. It is not a witch-hunt of any Chairman. Thirteen Caretaker Chairmen failed to honour and respect the directive of the House.”

The local government chairmen were also said to have diverted 10 per cent of the internally generated revenue for their personal use.

It was said to have been paid into their personal accounts.

The anti-graft body said the council chairmen had admitted committing the crime.

“The council bosses are now pleading with the EFCC to give them some time that they would pay back what they had benefited from government’s money,” EFCC disclosed, adding that they would be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.

The local government bosses arrested are Risikat Opakunle; Saidu Yaru Musa; Umar Belle; Ayeni Dallas; Fatai Adeniyi Garba; Lah Abdulmumeen; Raliat Funmi Salau; Aminat Omodara; Muyiwa Oladipo.
