The Police Command in Ondo State has said that it has foiled a bomb attempt, arrested six suspects, recovered Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, component and other exhibits in Akure, the state capital.

Mr Adebowale Lawal, Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, said this during a news conference on Thursday in Akure.

Lawal explained that the suspects were identified as Adekunle Prosper (male, 56), Ojo Olumide (male, 39), Tope Kolawole (male, 40), Ahmed Salihu (male, 40), Bolaji Adebowale (male, 46), and Gbadebo Abidemi (female, 43).

According to him, intelligence uncovered that the suspects had recently rented an apartment in the Oke-Odu Area of Akure, which they used as a base for their activities.

Lawal, who said that the arrest was made on April 15, said the achievement followed credible and actionable intelligence received by the command regarding the activities of a suspected criminal syndicate operating along state lines.

“Acting swiftly on the intelligence, operatives were strategically deployed to the identified location, where the suspects were apprehended before they could execute their planned attack,” he said.

He said that a thorough search of the scene and subsequent operation at the suspects’ apartment resulted in the recovery of a cache of items including 217 bottles, bags of sugar and criminal charms.

“Other items include 17 mobile phones, the sum of N187,000, two HP laptops, eight slings, one knife, an external hard drive, two identity cards, one National Identity Number (NIN) card, two motorcycles, among others.

“Preliminary assessments indicate that some of these materials were intended for the construction of explosive devices, while others may have been used to facilitate coordinated criminal activities.

“Findings reveal that the group actively engaged in assembling IEDs allegedly intended for deployment on government infrastructures, with indications that their operations may extend beyond the state capital to other parts of the country.

“Notably, a document mapping out potential target locations was also recovered, suggesting a premeditated and coordinated plan.

“The timely intervention of the police undoubtedly averted what could have resulted in significant loss of lives and widespread destruction of property,” he said.

Lawal, who condemned the act, advised house owners and property managers to carry out thorough background checks on prospective tenants before renting out their apartments to prevent such premises from being used as criminal hideouts or operational bases.

More than 150 journalists are set to benefit from the media career development programme, Media Career Fix, organised by the Media Career Development Network, MCDN.

The Executive Director of MCDN, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, announced the programme, which is supported by Nigeria LNG Limited, at its launch in Lagos last week.

After assessing participants’ career progress and identifying gaps affecting their growth, Otufodunrin explained that the journalists would receive personalised recommendations, participate in relevant training sessions, and gain access to mentoring, coaching, and other capacity-building support.

Presenting a report on the state of media career development, Otufodunrin said a survey conducted ahead of the launch revealed, among other findings, that many journalists in the country lacked mentorship, career direction, access to necessary information and data resources, as well as tools, training, and digital capacity.

Journalists who responded to the survey also identified safety, ethics and institutional constraints, as well as poor remuneration and financial instability, as major constraints hindering their career growth.

To address the identified challenges, Otufodunrin said beneficiaries of the programme would be provided with career strategy and clarity, a structured mentorship system, and improved access to opportunities.

They will also receive training in digital readiness, economic empowerment, and sustainability strategies.

Instead of selecting only 30 beneficiaries as originally planned, the Executive Director explained that MCDN decided to support all respondents due to the severity of the challenges they highlighted.

He thanked Nigeria LNG Limited for its support and urged participants to maximise the career-enhancement opportunities available to them.

“It is important for journalists to be intentional about achieving their career goals and aspirations instead of leaving things to chance,” Otufodunrin said, noting that the Media Career Check-up/Media Career Fix initiative was a wake-up call for journalists to take charge of their career development.

In her keynote address titled “Fixing You First: The Hard Truth About Building a Journalism Career in Nigeria,” Editor of Gist Nigeria and Career Mentor at BBC, Ms. Omotola Adebanjo, noted that until individual journalists addressed their own gaps, no newsroom, mentor, or opportunity would be sufficient.

While acknowledging the various crises facing journalism globally, Adebanjo said journalists should stop telling themselves that they would grow only when they joined the right newsroom.

“You don’t grow because of the newsroom; you grow because you decide to—then the newsroom will catch up with you,” she said.

She recommended “personal fixing” in areas such as skills ownership, visibility, adaptability, and financial responsibility.

Adebanjo, however, noted that news organisations also hax a role to play in supporting journalists’ development.

She urged organisations to stop treating journalists as replaceable labour, invest in training (not just output), and build structured mentorship pipelines.

Media organisations should also reward innovation, not just routine reporting and protect editorial independence, she said.

The launch attracted both physical and virtual participants from across the country.

Special guests at the programme included a Board of Trustees member of MCDN, Alhaja Sekinat Lawal; Founder of The Journalism Clinic and Executive Director of Media Mentors Leadership Academy, Ms. Joke Kujenya; Executive Director of Illuminate Nigeria Development Network, Ms. Anikeade Funke Treasure; Founder of Debisibusybee Media, Mrs. Adebisi Adetunji; and the Executive Director of Media Mentors Network.

For those who studied Economics at the Ordinary Level in the 1970s, the name O.A. Lawal likely rings a bell. His seminal work, O’ Level Economics of West Africa, outlines the four pillars of production—land, labour, capital, and enterprise—as the essential resources for creating value.

Centuries earlier, in 1776, Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations just as the Industrial Revolution began to flicker across Europe. Smith dismantled the antiquated notion that wealth was a finite hoard of gold, arguing instead that prosperity flowed from productive labour and the “invisible hand” of the market, which incentivised innovation. Similarly, Karl Marx viewed labour as the fundamental human activity that transforms the world.

Today, we stand at the precipice of a digital revolution in which these theories are being put to a surreal and perverse test. In the expanding frontier of Artificial Intelligence, the “invisible hand” has begun to look like a sleight of hand. Creative labour doesn’t matter anymore, at least in Nigeria’s media ecosystem.

For Nigerian journalists and newsrooms, the digital economy is no longer a marketplace of fair exchange; it has become a modern enclosure movement. Intellectual commons are being fenced off and harvested by global tech giants without a single kobo of compensation for the “tillers of the soil.”

The most predictable and substantial profits are currently going to firms that sell the necessary tools to build AI, often likened to the merchants who profited more than the miners during the Gold Rush. As of early 2026, AI-driven wealth creation is largely concentrated in Silicon Valley, with top tech executives reaching record net worths, and AI startups achieving massive valuations.

For instance, Elon Musk leads the 2026 Forbes list with an estimated net worth of $839 billion, followed by Google co-founders Larry Page ($257 billion) and Sergey Brin ($237 billion), Amazon’s Jeff Bezos ($224 billion) and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg ($222 billion). I don’t have the numbers, but it’s doubtful whether any individual Nigerian publisher hits a billion-dollar net worth.

For the press, we either swim or sink together. We must work together to avoid mutual failure. Individual media outlets cannot take on the behemoths of Silicon Valley alone and win.

For decades, the bedrock of Nigerian democracy has been its independent press. Our pressmen and journalists have served as the nation’s primary witnesses, travelling to the furthest reaches of the Delta or the volatile borders of the north to document the pulse of the country, sometimes putting their lives on the line.

They and their publishers are the ones who bear the cost—economic, legal, and often physical—of extracting truth from the noise of a complex society. Yet, today, the fruits of this labour are being mindlessly treated by Silicon Valley as “free” raw material to generate the mega-wealth of Elon Musk & Co.

It is just time to act. Giant tech and AI firms must share the enormous value they reap from exploiting trusted Nigerian content with the human journalists and publishers who actually create it. It is the legal and patriotic duty of the Federal Competitive and Consumer Protection Commission to right all the wrongs.

These firms are currently scraping decades of Nigerian reportage to train systems that can mimic our cultural cadence, summarise our investigative journalism, and answer queries about our local politics. When a user asks an AI to explain the intricacies of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s latest fiscal policy or to summarise a deep dive into national infrastructure, the “value” is captured entirely by the tech firm: the original newsroom—which paid the journalist’s salary, costs of investigation, and all that goes into storytelling—is left to pick the crumbs that fall from Big Tech table.

Yet, in an era of rampant misinformation and sophisticated deepfakes, trusted journalism is more expensive to produce than ever. In Nigeria, documenting the truth is a service to the state, often performed under the shadow of business volatility and economic instability. But the Big Tech and AI firms turn these resources into mind-boggling wealth. That isn’t right or fair.

When AI models ingest the archives of Nigerian newspapers, they are not just taking data points; they are taking specialised local knowledge and hard-won public trust. If these firms continue to exploit this content without a revenue-sharing model, they are effectively starving the very sources they depend on for accuracy. If our newsrooms collapse because they can no longer monetise their work, AI models will eventually be forced to “hallucinate” based on a vacuum of real-time facts. The truth is an AI is only as smart as the human bravery that feeds it.

Our stories are our national assets. If an AI firm uses Nigerian reportage to build a product valued in the billions of dollars, a percentage of that value must flow back to the sources, as of right not of aid. And this is not merely about corporate profits; it is about the survival of the Nigerian press.

To move from exploitation to equity, we need a model built on three pillars: transparent licensing, usage royalties and algorithmic transparency. Countries like Australia, Canada and South Africa have already introduced measures along these lines. The Nigerian government, through its regulatory agencies, especially FCCPC and the Bosun Tijani-led Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, must provide the regulatory muscle for this fight.

For the press, we either swim or sink together. We must work together to avoid mutual failure. Individual media outlets cannot take on the behemoths of Silicon Valley alone and win. We need collective bargaining power to ensure that “innovation” does not become a euphemism for uncompensated extraction.

The argument that the internet is a “free and open” space has always been a convenient fiction for those who own the servers. While the distribution of information should be free, the production of verified information is not. It requires labour, capital, and entrepreneurship—the very factors of production Smith identified 250 years ago. And that must be paid for.

Big Tech must be forced to the table. Tunji Bello-led FCCPC should exercise its powers now. Innovation is the engine of the future, but it must not be fuelled by the theft of others’ intellectual labour. If tech giants wish to build truly “intelligent” systems, they must act ethically by acknowledging and reimbursing the human cost of their data sets.

This is our clear message: Big Tech brigandage must stop. Those who profit from retelling creative content must pay the original tellers. It’s about the basic tenets of a fair market: value for value, and respect for the productive/creative labour, the fundamental human activity, that makes human progress possible.

The Police Command in Ondo State has arrested three suspects and rescued three victims in connection with an alleged kidnapping incident in Oda community, Akure South local government area.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, who said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Akure, explained that the suspects were captured on a Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV, camera.

Jimoh said the arrest followed the circulation of the CCTV footage on social media showing the abduction of a victim by suspected criminals in Oda Area of Akure.

“Upon receiving the footage, the command immediately activated its intelligence team, leveraging digital surveillance analysis and coordinated field operations to identify and apprehend the suspects.

“Acting on credible intelligence and investigative leads derived from the footage, operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad carried out targeted operations which led to the arrest of one of the suspects.

“During interrogation, the suspect provided useful information that led to the subsequent arrest of two other accomplices believed to have played active roles in the incident, and who were also captured on the CCTV footage.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects played various roles in the commission of the alleged kidnapping.

“The arrested suspects are identified as; Mohammed Koro ‘m’ aged 27yrs, Muhammad Usman ‘m’ aged 30yrs and Musa Alhaji ‘m’ aged 23yrs,” he said.

The spokesperson, however, said operational efforts culminated in the successful rescue of the three victims, who were debriefed and taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

According to him, the suspects have made useful confessional statements, which are aiding ongoing efforts to ensure the arrest of other syndicate members.

Jimoh, therefore, said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The spokesperson also said the state Commissioner of Police, CP, Adebowale Lawal, reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to combating crime and criminality, emphasising that Ondo would not serve as a safe haven for criminals.

“The CP warned that regardless of where suspects choose to hide, they will be relentlessly tracked down and made to face the full weight of the law.

“He also reassures residents that the command remains fully committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.

“Lawal urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with credible and actionable information that can aid ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements,” he said.

Jimoh, therefore, encouraged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities, assuring that proactive measures were in place to prevent and combat all forms of criminality within the state.

The Police Command in Ondo State has said that it has arrested a wanted kidnapper terrorising Akoko axis, Abdullahi Lawal, in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko North East local government area of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, who made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Akure, said the suspect was the ring leader of the kidnapping gang.

Jimoh said the arrest followed sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated operational strategies.

“Lawal of Aderoju Camp, Ugbe Akoko Town, was identified as the mastermind of a kidnapping incident involving one Aremu Tijani ‘M’ that occurred on Aug. 18, 2025, at the victim’s bush farm in Ikare-Akoko axis.

“It would be recalled that security operatives engaged the kidnappers in a tactical operation which led to the neutralisation of three members while four other suspects were arrested.

“However, the gang leader, Abdullahi Lawal, managed to escape from the scene at the time, despite sustaining gunshot injuries during the encounter with police operatives.

“Following his escape, the command immediately placed the suspect on an intelligence watchlist, while intensive surveillance and discreet investigations were launched to track his movements and possible hideouts.

“After months of sustained intelligence-led operations and coordinated efforts by security personnel, the suspect was successfully apprehended by police operatives in Ikare-Akoko.

“He has since made useful confessional statements and will be charged to court,” the spokesperson said.

Jimoh, who reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for kidnapping and other violent crimes, assured residents that efforts were being intensified to dismantle all criminal networks operating within the state and its surrounding communities.

He also said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Adebowale Lawal, commended the dedication, professionalism, and resilience of the operatives involved in the operation.

According to him, the CP also appreciated members of the public who continued to provide useful information which aids police operations.

“Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through established security channels.

“The command assures the public that no criminal will be allowed to operate freely in Ondo State, as proactive measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property,” the spokesperson said.

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, FOMWAN, Lagos State chapter, has intensified its appeal for financial support to complete its Primary Healthcare Centre project in Eti-Osa local government area, as it marked its 40th anniversary with a strong call for climate responsibility and women-led environmental action.

Speaking at a well-attended 40th anniversary of the association held at the Alausa Community Mosque Multi-Purpose Hall on Thursday, the Amirah of FOMWAN Lagos, Serifat Oluwatoyin Ajagbe, described the ongoing construction of the healthcare facility at Olugborogan area, Elesan Village, Eti-Osa local government area, as a strategic intervention aimed at bridging gaps in access to primary healthcare services.

She called on philanthropists, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians at home and abroad to partner with the association to ensure the facility became operational soon.

Ajagbe reiterated that beyond healthcare delivery, FOMWAN Lagos remained active in civic education, election observation, gender advocacy, human rights promotion and humanitarian interventions during communal conflicts and flooding.

She added that the association collaborated with government agencies to disseminate public health information and extended welfare support to inmates in correctional centres.

The royal father of the day and chairman of the occasion, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, commended FOMWAN Lagos for four decades of sustained service to faith and humanity.

Reflecting on the milestone, the monarch challenged members to remain faithful to their founding vision.

“At forty, we must ask ourselves: Are we still aligned with the vision of our founders? Are we sincere in our service for the sake of Allah? Are we positively impacting lives and strengthening our communities?,” he said.

He noted that for four decades, FOMWAN Lagos had stood as a pillar of faith, discipline, education, family support and community development, empowering women, supporting widows and advancing healthcare initiatives.

However, he observed that serious challenges remained, including discrimination, economic hardship, domestic violence, depression and health concerns affecting many women.

He described the Primary Healthcare Centre as a timely grassroots response, particularly for riverine and peri-urban communities within Eti-Osa.

The Oniru urged individuals and corporate bodies to support the project, stressing that sustainable development required synergy among faith-based organisations, traditional institutions and government.

He added that women-led initiatives continued to demonstrate their power to drive social transformation.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Khadijah Olaniyan urged Muslim women to see climate change as both a spiritual and civic responsibility.

She said environmental degradation stemmed largely from human excesses and mismanagement, citing indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly poor e-waste management, as a major contributor to contamination and disease.

Advocating the concept of a “Green Mosque” environment, she encouraged mosques and Islamic centres to adopt proper waste management systems, reduce plastic usage and integrate environmental sustainability into faith practice.

Citing the Holy Qur’an and Islamic teachings, she noted that the Holy Prophet encouraged the planting of trees, describing it as a spiritual responsibility that safeguards the environment and mitigates the causes and effects of climate change.

“Planting a tree is not just environmental activism; it is an act of worship that safeguards humanity,” she said.

Olaniyan also identified carbon emissions from cooking systems, vehicular pollution, blockage of drainage channels and open burning of waste as contributors to flooding and climate-related disasters.

She warned that overconsumption driven by covetousness worsened climate challenges and had far-reaching implications for health, education, food security and economic stability.

Climate change, she added, contributed to desertification and rising food costs, affecting availability and affordability.

The professor urged governments at all levels to strengthen environmental management systems and ensure proper supervision of officers responsible for waste management.

She called for stricter enforcement of sanitation regulations and improved oversight of environmental sanitation exercises.

She also advocated greater emphasis on climate education for women and schoolchildren to promote long-term behavioural change.

Olaniyan encouraged women to reduce waste generation, stop open burning, minimise plastic usage and organise events that avoid disposable plastic containers.

“Let us take the lead in mitigating the causes and consequences of climate change,” she charged.

The 40th anniversary theme underscored the importance of wisdom and informed engagement as Muslim women contribute to global conversations on climate resilience, sustainability and community development.

Ajagbe expressed appreciation to religious leaders, traditional rulers, invited guests and members of the public for their support.

The Police Command in Ondo State has admonished religious leaders, consisting of Muslim, Christian, and traditional worshippers, to suspend night worship due to the security challenges in the state.

Mr Adebowale Lawal, Commissioner of Police in the state, gave the advice on Friday in Akure while addressing newsmen on the recent abduction of six members of a Celestial church in Uso.

The victims were kidnapped on February 25 during a midnight service at the church located along Uso/Owo Expressway in Owo local government area of the state.

One of the worshipers was rescued and one informant arrested by the police after the incident.

It was gathered that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N100 million before the victims could be released.

Lawal explained that all the victims were pregnant women and one physically-challenged person.

The commissioner said it would be easier for the police to monitor religious activities during the daytime than in the night.

“On the issue of ransom, nobody has come forward to speak officially about ransom payments.

“And we have always advised religious leaders, if they want to do anything, they should carry us along so we can give expert advice on whether it is safe for their congregation.

“In the recent case, nobody informed us about any activity taking place there.

“I do not know when a church became a maternity home or hospital. If someone is pregnant, the best place should be a hospital or maternity home.

“However, we sent a signal to all area commanders advising religious leaders—Muslim, Christian, and traditional worshippers—to suspend night worship for now because of the security challenges,” he said.

The Police Command in Ondo State has arrested a 40-year-old landlady, Nafisat Lateef, in connection with the alleged poisoning of her tenant’s three-year-old son in Odigbo local government area of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, made this known in a statement on Friday in Akure.

Jimoh said the incident was reported on Thursday, February 5 at the Odigbo Police Division by the victim’s mother, Rofiyat, aged 32, both residents of Omifon, Odigbo.

“According to the report, the incident occurred on Wednesday Feb. 4 at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly gave the victim identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous.

“The act was reportedly carried out following a misunderstanding between the complainant and the suspect, who is the complainant’s landlady.

“Shortly after consuming the substance, the child began vomiting and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention.

“Police detectives, during a swift and intelligence-led operation, arrested the suspect. In the course of investigation, the detectives also recovered the liquid substance,” he said.

Jimoh, who said the suspect was currently in police custody and had made useful statements, explained that investigation was ongoing, and the case would be charged to court upon its conclusion.

The spokesperson also said the state Commissioner of Police, CP, advised residents to avoid landlord–tenant disputes, and warned that such disagreements often led to poor coexistence, and could escalate into criminal acts.

He, therefore, reassured members of the public that the command remained readily available to respond promptly to all complaints and was fully committed to ensuring justice in all cases.

“In conclusion, CP Adebowale Lawal urged the good people of Ondo State to remain law-abiding and to continue cooperating with the police by providing timely and credible information.

“The information will aid crime prevention and the protection of lives and property throughout the state,” he said.

The Police Command in Ondo State has arrested four suspected kidnappers, as part of the syndicate linked to Ilu-Abo attack in Akure North local government area of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Akure.

Jimoh said the success recorded was due to sustained efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state

He explained that the arrest followed intensive intelligence-driven operations launched by the command after the violent incident of January 25, 2026.

According to the spokesperson, during the incident, armed assailants attacked residents at Liberty Avenue, Ilu-Abo, shot a victim, abducted another, and caused injuries to two others.

He said the incident prompted an immediate operational response, including reinforced tactical deployments, enhanced intelligence gathering, and on-the-spot assessment by the Commissioner of Police, CP.

“On Thursday January 29, acting on proactive and credible intelligence, the vigilant members of Ilu-Abo Community apprehended one Abenaguna Muhammad, male, found in possession of various criminal charms.

“The suspect was immediately handed over to police operatives for discreet investigation.

“During investigations, the suspect confessed to being a member of a kidnapping syndicate operating along the Ala/Ilu-Abo axis and actively involved in the recent violent attack and abduction recorded in that area.

“The suspect further disclosed that the syndicate was led by one Lanre, popularly known as “Lanre Tomato” and two other men namely Ojo and Pius.

“These suspects are currently in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to recover exhibits, unravel further criminal links, and ensure diligent prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.

Jimoh also said the state CP, Adebowale Lawal, commended Ilu-Abo Community for their vigilance, courage, and timely cooperation with the command.

“The CP described their action as a practical demonstration of effective community partnership in crime prevention, which directly contributed to unmasking the perpetrators violent crimes along Ala/Ilu-Abo axis.

“Lawal reiterated the command’s commitment to community policing and urged residents to continue supporting security efforts through structured vigilante services, timely and credible information sharing, and close collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

“Inter-agency collaboration and cooperation between the command and other security agencies, including non-conventional outfits, remain a critical pillar in the fight against kidnapping and other organised crimes across the state,” he said.

The federal government has raised the alarm over the growing burden of respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular conditions, and other environmental-related diseases linked to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the country.

The Minister of Environment, Mr Balarabe Lawal, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ engagement on the National Emergency Response to Environment-Related Diseases Arising from Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

The meeting was organised by the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria, EHCON.

Lawal, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Mahmud Kambari, said evidence from environmental surveillance, health statistics, and peer assessments presented a clear and disturbing picture of the health burden posed by greenhouse gas emissions.

“Respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular conditions, and other environmentally linked diseases are rising. What we are facing today is no longer solely an environmental issue but a public health emergency.

“The burden of disease associated with poor environmental quality is increasing faster than our health system can accommodate.

“Families are spending more on treatment, workforce productivity is declining, and environmental degradation continues to undermine our development goals,” he said.

Lawal noted that the absence of a coordinated national framework to systematically address environmental health risks linked to greenhouse gas emissions has further deepened the challenge.

Based on these concerns, he said the ministry, in partnership with EHCON and key stakeholders, considered the declaration of a public health emergency on environmental-related diseases as urgent and necessary.

According to him, the federal government has therefore activated the National Emergency Response Initiative on Environmental Public Health Impacts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, NERI-EPHIGGE.

He explained that the initiative represented a strategic and coordinated national framework designed to deliver both immediate and long-term interventions through strengthened environmental health regulations and enforcement.

“It also entails the nationwide establishment of environmental health surveillance and response units, promotion of cleaner energy, sustainable industrial practices, low-emission transport systems, as well as robust public awareness and behaviour change campaigns,” Lawal said.

He assured that the ministry would continue to work closely with state governments, relevant departments, development partners, and civil society organisations to ensure that environmental protection efforts translate into measurable public health outcomes.

“I emphasise that this responsibility does not rest on government alone. It demands collective action from regulatory bodies, industries, and the transport and energy sectors.

“The cost of inaction is greater than the cost of intervention. The science is clear, the health evidence is undeniable, the risks are immediate, and the time to act is now,” he said.

Lawal therefore called on all stakeholders to lend their full support to the implementation of the national emergency response initiative and work collectively towards a cleaner environment, a healthier population, and a more sustainable Nigeria.

He commended EHCON for its foresight, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding environmental public health, describing the engagement as timely as stakeholders unite to confront the growing public health consequences of greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution.

“Nigeria, like many rapidly developing nations, is experiencing accelerated urbanisation, industrial expansion, rising energy demand, and intensified transportation activities.

“These are indicators of economic growth and modernisation. However, they have also resulted in a troubling increase in environmental pollutants, particularly greenhouse gases, which have both direct and indirect impacts on human health,” he said.
