Lagos State University, LASU, on Tuesday, welcomed its sixth Chancellor.

He is Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe Division of Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Visitor to the school, presided over the ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Alausa, where the traditional ruler was invested and sworn in.

The investiture was attended by members of the institution’s Governing Council, management and traditional rulers.

The law setting up the university empowers the Visitor to appoint chancellor, who shall hold office for five years and shall be eligible for reappointment for a second and final term of five years.

Sanwo-Olu, exercising the power conferred on him by Section 1 of the first Schedule of the Lagos State University Law of 2004 (as amended), appointed Ogunsanwo to succeed Prof. Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who completed his term.

Ogunsanwo, former chairman of Lagos State Inland Revenue Service, LIRS, became the first traditional ruler to hold the position in LASU.

Sanwo-Olu said the choice of Ogunsanwo as the school chancellor represented a convergence of tradition and modernity essential for sustainable progress of the academic institution.

He said the appointment reflected the recognition of traditional institution’s relevance in governance, social cohesion and moral leadership.

The governor said the traditional ruler possessed a sterling track record of service, noting that Ogunsanwo’s commitment to community development, and his embodiment of integrity and cultural heritage made him qualified for the role.

Sanwo-Olu said: “This appointment is both deliberate and historic. For the first time since the establishment of Lagos State University, a traditional ruler has been entrusted with the exalted office of chancellor. The appointment is deliberate because it reflects our recognition of the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in governance, social cohesion, and moral leadership.

“Oba Ogunsanwo’s emergence represents a convergence of tradition and modernity, which is an essential alignment for a society seeking sustainable progress. The office of the chancellor occupies a unique and revered place in the life of the university. It is a position that symbolises continuity, dignity, and the enduring values upon which the institution is built. Beyond its ceremonial significance, the chancellor serves as a moral compass, a custodian of tradition, and an ambassador of the university’s ideals.”

Sanwo-Olu charged the new chancellor to uphold the dignity and traditions of the university, while promoting unity among the school’s governing organs.

The governor told the chancellor that the public’s expectation of him was to sustain LASU’s position as a citadel of excellence producing academically sound, ethically grounded and socially responsible graduates.

The university, Sanwo-Olu urged the chancellor, must continue to serve as a hub for policy-relevant research and a strategic partner in advancing solutions to contemporary challenges.

The governor said: “This investiture marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of LASU. It is a chapter that, we are confident, will be defined by stability, growth and renewed prestige.

“We will continue to provide the enabling environment necessary for the university to thrive, while also expecting the highest standards of performance and accountability from all stakeholders.”

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, described Ogunsanwo’s appointment as “a fusion of intellect, heritage and higher learning”, stressing that the chancellor would leverage his experience and connections to enable the university meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global knowledge.

Sule said: “Kabiyesi comes at a critical and exciting time in the history of this great institution. The expectations are high, but so too is the confidence we repose in his leadership. His appointment brings forth a rare blend of traditional authority and modern insight that will undoubtedly strengthen the moral, cultural, and intellectual fabric of the university.”

In his acceptance remarks, Ogunsanwo, who is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Business Administration at LASU, promised to work harmoniously with the Visitor, the Governing Council and the university management to strengthen the values and traditions defining the aspirations of the school.

The United Nations has been urged to make Communication a major component of its development agenda whenever it reviews the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, in order to achieve the desired impact.

The call was made by the 2024/2025 set of the Ph.D. students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Lagos State University, LASU, in a communique issued at the end of weeks of critical academic review of the SDG in the Communication for Development Class of the Ph.D programme.

The Class is made up of 32 students and the course is handled by the Dean of FCMS, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies, Professor Jide Jimoh, and a renowned academic, Associate Professor Olugbenga Toyosi Owolabi.

In its proposal, the Class declared that the importance of Communication in the development programme could not be over-emphasized, hence the urgent need for it to be made to stand alone and not just an appendage to any other goal, as it has been the case.

The scholars commended the United Nations for the introduction of the SDGs which replaced the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 in continuation of its determination to, through its 17 goals, put an end to poverty, inequality and solve the problems associated with climate change, among otherchallenges.

The Class also commended successive Nigerian governments, which in view of the country’s membership of the United Nations, agreed to the programme and localized it to make it useful and relevant to the development of the country.

The Class attested to the efficacy of the programme as a catalyst of development in the country in general and the rural areas in particular.

It is, however, of the view that a lot needed to be done to attain the specific developments expected to result from the SDGs.

Stressing the importance of Communication, the scholars stated their determination to present a research paper to expatiate and justify the importance of the need for the United Nations to consider Communication as a distinct goal following subsequent review of the SDGs.

The Class also urged communication scholars across Nigeria and beyond to embark on a campaign to make real the dream of having Communication as one of UN’s major goals.

The Class appealed to the media in general to give the necessary support to the cause of prioritizing Communication in order to achieve the important desire to make it a distinct goal.

It assured the United Nations that the inclusion of Communication as a major goal would fire the speed of the attainment of the true intention of its development agenda faster and better than it had been.

It applauded Nigerian government for the achievements so far, and encouraged it to renew its zeal and will to make a greater success of the SDGs for the betterment of humanity.

The communique reads in full:

“COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF AN ACADEMIC REVIEW OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS BY 2024/2025 PH.D STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES, LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY, LASU, HELD ON MONDAY, 24TH NOVEMBER 2025, AT LASU.

“The 2024/2025 Ph.D. students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, FCMS, Lagos State University, LASU, had weeks of critical review of Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, in the Communication for Development Class. The students were 32 in number and the lecturers that took them in the course were the Dean of FCMS, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies, Professor Jide Jimoh, and a renowned academic, Associate Professor Olugbenga Toyosi Owolabi.

“Monday, 24th November 2025, marked the end of the five weeks of the critical review, with submissions on the effectiveness of the SDG, its challenges and way forward. At the end of the exercise, the following resolutions were taken:

“1. The Class of 2024/2025 academic year commended the United Nations for the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals which replaced the Millennium Development Goals in 2015 in continuation of its determination to, through its 17 goals, put an end to poverty, inequality and solve the problems associated with climate change.

“2. The Class also commended successive Nigerian governments, which in view of the country’s membership of the United Nations Organisation, agreed to the programme and localized it to make it useful and relevant to the development of the country.

“3. The Class attested to the efficacy of the programme as a catalyst of development in the country in general and the rural areas in particular.

“4. It, however, posited that a lot needed to be done to attain the specific developments expected to result from the SDG.

“5. The Class was quite emphatic about the obvious impossibility of the attainment of the goals set to be met in 2030.

“6. The Class therefore emphasised the need for the government, organisations and individuals to be intentional about working in synergy with the aim of achieving the set intentions of the SDG.

“7. In specific term, the Class called on the Nigerian government to show the political will and transparency in the discharge of their duties in order to ensure the success of the SDG ahead of the 2030 date.

“8. Also, the Class urged different relevant organisations and individuals in the different communities across the country to appreciate the provisions by the drivers of the SDG, own the infrastructure and make a success of the drive towards solving the basic problems which have continued to, unfortunately, stunted growth and development.

“9. The Class said the importance of Communication could not be over-emphasized hence it should no longer remain an appendage to any other goal in future goals setting.

“10. In particular and with great emphasis, the Class called for a review of the interconnected goals set by the United Nations for the SDG in the future.

“11. It reasoned that given its rightful place of importance, Communication would make easy, the attainment of other interconnected goals and make the world a better place.

“12. It is against this backdrop that the Class advocated that a future review of development goals should consider Communication as an integral part which should stand alone.

“13. The Class added that its call for the special consideration of Communication stemmed from the appreciation of its crucial role as a tool for the promotion of development goals in general.

“14. The Class therefore called on the United Nations to, in the next review, consider Communication as a distinct goal, positing that that would engender the successful attainment of other goals.

“15. The Class expressed its resolve to present a research paper to expatiate and justify the importance of the need for the United Nations to consider Communication as a distinct goal.

“16. It also urged Communication scholars across Nigeria and beyond, to rev the engine of advocacy for the inclusion of Communication as a distinct goal in future review of the development efforts of the United Nations.

“17. It called on the media in general to give vent to such research work and advocacy in general to be able to achieve the important desire to make Communication a separate goal.

“18. Finally, it assured the United Nations that the consideration of Communication as a separate goal would fire the speed of the attainment of the true intention of its development agenda.

“19. While praising the government for the achievements so far, the Class encouraged it to renew its zeal and will to make a greater success of the SDG for the betterment of humanity.”

A non-governmental organisation, the Funmike Empowerment Foundation, has expressed happiness with the progress recorded in the transformation of Atinuke Sittu, who grew up under the weight of financial limitations but found solace in the programme of the foundation.

Narrating the story, Founder and Executive Director of Funmike Empowerment Foundation, Oluwafunmike Esther Salami, said it was a great turn around that reflected the hard work of the foundation.

Salami told the story of Atinubuk: “Shittu Are Atinuke, known as Tinuke, grew up in a family that valued education but struggled under the weight of financial limitations. The youngest of her mother’s children and the fourth of her late father’s eight, she possessed an extraordinary intellect, a curiosity that seemed boundless, and a determination that belied her age. By the time she completed secondary school in 2018, she had everything a bright young Nigerian student needed to succeed grades, discipline, and dreams but she lacked one crucial element: the financial resources to continue her education. While her classmates applied for universities, bought books, and prepared for the life they imagined, Tinuke remained at home, waiting, her ambitions quietly bottled up by circumstance.

“To survive and contribute to her household, she took a low-paying job, earning between ten and twenty thousand naira a month, barely enough to cover transport, food, and basic living costs. Her income was sufficient to survive but never enough to save for school fees.

“Everything changed in 2022, the year the Funmike Empowerment Foundation discovered her story. The Foundation did not see a girl trapped by circumstance; it saw a scholar waiting to be awakened. During the first conversations, Tinuke shared the frustration and pain of years spent waiting while others advanced. The Foundation recognized her brilliance and, more importantly, her potential. What many might have seen as despair, the Foundation saw as an opportunity to intervene, empower, and transform a life.

“The Funmike Empowerment Foundation took full ownership of her journey. Rather than simply giving financial aid or temporary relief, the Foundation created a comprehensive plan to equip her with the tools, skills, and guidance necessary to reclaim her dreams. The first step was to enroll her in the UI/UX Design programme at Learn to Earn Institute. At the time, Tinuke had almost no exposure to digital design. She knew how to operate a phone and a basic computer, but the world of user interfaces, wireframes, colour theory, prototypes, and human-centered design was entirely new. Under the Foundation’s mentorship, she approached the programme with commitment and courage.

“Over seven months, the Foundation guided her through every module, checked her progress, ensured she had the resources to practice, and encouraged her through moments of doubt. She went from a beginner who barely understood digital tools to a confident designer.

“With her skills and confidence restored, the Funmike Empowerment Foundation helped Tinuke navigate the next step: gaining admission to Lagos State University (LASU) to study Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management. It was not simply about submitting forms; the Foundation provided guidance on applications, mentorship on academic preparation, and emotional support throughout the process.

“Her international journey began at LASU during the second semester of her 200-level year, when the university sought a departmental representative for a student exchange programme. Tinuke was nominated, and with the Foundation’s guidance, she prepared for every requirement—academic, administrative, and financial.

“The Foundation stood beside her as she gathered documentation, navigated embassy requirements, and prepared mentally and emotionally for her first trip abroad. When she qualified and was selected to represent her department, it was a triumph not only for her but for the Foundation that had nurtured her potential.

“Today, Tinuke studies at WSB University in Dąbrowa Górnicza, Poland, representing LASU, the Funmike Empowerment Foundation and Nigeria with pride. Her course, Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management, places her in a position to gain a global perspective and develop professional skills that will serve her for life. Yet the glory of this achievement rests largely with the Funmike Empowerment Foundation.“

The National Universities Commission, NUC, has approved four new full-time undergraduate programmes for the Lagos State University within its Faculty of Computing and Information Technology.

This is contained in a statement issued and signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, on Tuesday.

She said this development would further strengthen LASU’s position as a leader in technology-driven education.

“The approval was conveyed in a letter dated November 3, and signed by the Acting Director of Academic Planning, Mr Abubakar Girei, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NUC.

“This approval follows a recent rigorous resource verification visit to the university by panels of experts tasked with assessing the availability of human and material resources for the proposed programmes.

“The four programmes were approved, effective from the 2025-2026 academic session.

“The programmes are B.Sc. Cyber Security, B.Sc. Software Engineering, B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology, and B.Sc. Data Science,” she said.

Thomas-Onashile added that the development also emphasised LASU’s commitment to providing cutting-edge education aligned with global technological advancements.

“However, it should be noted that the approval currently applies only to full-time study modes.

“By expanding its academic offerings, LASU reaffirms its dedication to nurturing expertise in computing disciplines and equipping graduates with the skills required to excel in Nigeria’s digital economy and beyond.”

The delegates of the House of Representatives have visited the Lagos State University, LASU, to discuss measures to curb certificate and admission racketeering in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The visit was held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, according to the statement shared via the university’s official social media platforms on Thursday in Lagos.

“LASU management received members of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Certificate Racketeering.

“The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Abubakar Fulata, included Hon. Iliyasu Aliyin, Hon. Yusuf Kure, Hon. Rabiu Yusuf, Esq., Hon. Adams Ogene, and Hon. Faud Laguda.

“The visit, held at the V-C’s Conference Room, sought to interface with the university management on measures adopted to curb certificate and admission racketeering in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

“The V-C, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Oseni Afisi,” the statement reads.

Olatunji-Bello welcomed the lawmakers and expressed appreciation for their efforts in sanitising Nigeria’s education system.

She noted that while certificate racketeering remained a national challenge, LASU had distinguished itself through its fully digitalised academic processes, from admission to graduation.

READ ALSO: INEC chair: Will politics trump justice, equity, and fairplay?

This, she said, made manipulation or falsification of records virtually impossible.

She added that every process from admission, registration, assessment, and certificate issuance, was transparent and automated.

She said the certificates were with a unique QR code that allowed instant verification anywhere in the world.

That, she said, guaranteed authenticity and eliminated the possibility of forgery.

She disclosed that the accreditation exercise from 2023 to date recorded an impressive 98 per cent success rate.

She reflected to the institution’s adherence to best academic and administrative standards.

Supporting the V-C’s remarks was the Deputy V-C, Administration, Prof. Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, who highlighted LASU’s mandatory use of National Identification Number in student registration.

He described it as an additional layer of identity verification.

He added that the university’s integration with the National Youth Service Corps portal ensured that only verified graduates were processed for certificate issuance.

The members of the Ad-hoc Committee commended LASU for setting a benchmark in transparency and innovation within the education sector.

They applauded the university’s cutting-edge verification system and robust digital frameworks, describing LASU as “a model for other Nigerian institutions and one of the most credible universities in West Africa.”

The chairman of the committee, Fulata lauded LASU’s leadership and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to eradicating certificate racketeering across the nation.

He called for continuous collaboration between the National Assembly and LASU in promoting accountability and technological advancement in higher education.

To demonstrate confidence in LASU’s system, the committee conducted a live test of a sample certificate, which was successfully verified through the university’s QR authentication platform.

Other top officials present included the University Bursar, Mr Said Babatunde, represented by the Deputy Bursar, Budget and Budgetry Control, Mr Adekunle Odunlami, among others.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government to address lingering issues affecting Nigeria’s university system or face a nationwide strike.

This is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held at the Yakubu Gown University, formerly University of Abuja.

A statement issued on the outcome of the meeting, was made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna.

In the statement, Piwuna said the ultimatum became necessary following the persistent neglect of the education sector and the welfare of university lecturers by both Federal and State governments.

READ ALSO: Dangote: FG appeals to PENGASSAN to shelve planned strike

“If at the end of the 14 days ultimatum the federal government fails to address these issues, the union may have no option than to, first, embark on a two-week warning strike and thereafter, an indefinite strike,” he said.

Piwuna recalled that ASUU had repeatedly raised concerns through media engagements, campus rallies and appeals over the past three months, without concrete response from government.

He listed the unresolved issues to include, renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding, revitalisation of public universities, and non-payment of outstanding 25–35 per cent salary arrears.

Other issues, according to him were the unresolved promotion arrears spanning over four years, non-remittance of third-party deductions, as well as alleged victimisation of members at LASU, KSU and FUTO.

Piwuna urged Nigerians, including religious and traditional leaders, parents, students and other stakeholders, to prevail on government to act swiftly to avert the looming strike.

“The 14-day ultimatum is an alarm to the Nigerian Government.

“We believe the Government has the capacity and financial strength to fix Nigerian universities once and for all.

“As they say, a stitch in time saves nine,” he said.

The Lagos State University, LASU, has said that no member of staff has the authority or capacity to offer admission for money, warning candidates against deception.

The university gave the warning on Friday in a press statement issued by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile.

She warned candidates not to be deceived.

Her words: “No staff member has the authority or capacity to offer admission in exchange for money. Candidates must not be deceived by such false claims.

“The university refutes, in the strongest terms, any suggestion that admission can be bought.

“We sympathise sincerely with candidates who, despite strong results, could not be admitted, but LASU cannot be coerced into exceeding its approved capacity.”

She said the university had monitored with keen interest social media posts and comments about the ongoing 2025/2026 admission exercise at LASU.

“Ordinarily, LASU owes no applicant an explanation regarding admission.

“However, a misleading narrative has emerged on social media, alleging staff involvement in admission racketeering.

“As a responsive institution, LASU cannot remain silent, for silence could allow misinformation to harden into accepted truth,” she said.

READ ALSO: NUPENG protests, accuses Dangote of anti-union agenda

She said it was therefore important to establish some facts for the benefit of the public.

“LASU Law 2004, as amended, provides that the university shall adopt a merit-driven admission policy, open to Nigerian and international students.

“This is with special preference for Lagosians, using a 70-30 guiding principle, whenever possible.

“This means that, after the merit list is released, Lagos State indigenes are prioritised before other candidates are considered.

“In line with this principle, LASU has offered admission to candidates of all origins who scored highest in each course, strictly on merit,” she said.

She added that the university had also admitted qualified and verified Lagos indigenes under supplementary and discretionary categories.

“Any indigene who has not yet received an offer should keep checking, as more admission lists will be released.

“Notably, LASU was the most subscribed university in Nigeria in the 2025 JAMB UTME, attracting over 70,000 applicants.

“With fewer than 20 percent admitted, many otherwise qualified candidates inevitably miss out on places.

“This explains, though it does not justify, the frustration seen on social media,” she said.

She added that what concerned the university most were allegations of admission racketeering.

Said she: “Although unscrupulous individuals may falsely claim to sell admission slots, the power to admit rests solely with the Vice-Chancellor.

“Management takes such allegations seriously.

“Applicants or members of the public with verifiable evidence are encouraged to report via complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng

“Every genuine report will be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found culpable will face strict disciplinary measures.”

In a country where wealth often masquerades as virtue and philanthropy is too frequently tethered to ego, Tunji Bello’s donation of a 550-seater auditorium to Lagos State University (LASU) is a quiet revolution. It is not the size of the gift that stuns—it is the source. By every reasonable measure—whether by asset declarations, Forbes rankings, or real estate holdings—Tunji Bello is not among Nigeria’s wealthiest citizens. Yet, he has done what perhaps fewer than 10 Nigerians have ever done: build a legacy structure for a public university—not with surplus, but with sacrifice.

The story began in 2021, when Bello turned 60. While many would have marked the milestone with opulence, he chose introspection. He saw the infrastructural gap in LASU—not as a statistic, but as a wound in the national conscience. With no clear funding arc, he took a leap of faith. He made his intentions known to LASU authorities, rallied friends, converted birthday gifts into donations, and when inflation threatened the dream, he sold his house to build an auditorium for LASU. What emerged is not just an auditorium—it is a monument to moral courage, a structure built not on concrete alone, but on conviction.

The Man Behind the Mission

Tunji Bello’s life is a study in purposeful evolution. A journalist, lawyer, environmentalist, and public servant, he has worn many hats—but always with the same thread of integrity. From his early days at Concord Press to his tenure as Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, and now as Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Bello has consistently stood on the side of the public interest.

At FCCPC, he has taken on digital loan sharks, price gougers, and monopolistic cartels with the same fervour he brought to LASU. His mantra is clear: governance must protect the vulnerable, and leadership must be anchored in empathy. Under his watch, FCCPC has become a bulwark against economic feudalism, ensuring that consumers are not crushed under the weight of exploitative practices.

Global Echoes of Modest Giants

Bello’s story is not without precedent. In India, Dashrath Manjhi—a poor labourer from Bihar—lost his wife, Falguni Devi, in 1959 after she fell from a mountain ridge and could not reach a hospital in time. The very mountain that blocked access became his adversary. Armed with only a hammer and chisel, Manjhi spent 22 years carving a path through it, reducing a 34-mile detour to just 9 miles. His grief became a gift to generations, and his resolve earned him the name “Mountain Man.”

In the United States, Clara Barton, with no formal medical training or wealth, founded the American Red Cross, driven by a singular passion to serve wounded soldiers. And in Kenya, Wangari Maathai began the Green Belt Movement with a handful of women planting trees—an act that grew into a global environmental crusade.

These individuals, like Bello, did not wait for billions. They acted with what they had: vision, grit, and a refusal to let tragedy or limitation define their legacy.

Auditoriums as Vessels of Nationhood

An auditorium is not just a building—it is a civic altar. It is where ideas are debated, futures are imagined, and communities are forged. In educational institutions, it becomes the heartbeat of intellectual life. Bello’s gift to LASU is therefore not ornamental—it is foundational. It affirms that learning deserves grandeur, that public universities should not be relegated to the margins of aspiration.

A Call to the Rest of Us

Tunji Bello’s gesture is a mirror. It asks each of us: what are you doing with your influence, your network, your modest means? It reminds us that charity is not the exclusive domain of billionaires—it is the province of the willing. In a society often paralyzed by cynicism, Bello’s story is a clarion call to rediscover our moral momentum—to be architects of good even when the moral scaffolding of society is collapsing.

Let this be the story that shifts our national imagination—from wealth as status to giving as stature. Let it be the story that inspires a thousand more auditoriums, scholarships, clinics, and community centers. And let it be the story that reminds us that the most enduring legacies are not built on abundance, but on audacity.
