Among the iconic projects that will be inaugurated by Tinubu in the two-day visit to his home state include the newly constructed Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge, Lagos State Geographic Information Service, LAGIS, building, and Lagos Multi-Agency Building in Alausa.

Other notable projects are Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Abijo, Ajah, Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle and Maracana Stadium, comprising 19 mini-football pitches built side by side in Ajegunle.

The details of the presidential visit were revealed during a press briefing held by the state government on Monday in Alausa, where Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, said Tinubu was expected to inaugurate the listed projects on Wednesday and Thursday.

The projects, Omotoso said, reflected the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to Lagos development and improved living standards of the residents, stressing that the infrastructure was carefully conceived and executed to address the growing needs of the population, ease mobility, stimulate economic activities, and enhance social welfare.

The commissioner said the projects testified to the administration’s unwavering commitment to building a Greater Lagos that was inclusive, sustainable and globally competitive.

He added that development highlighted the importance of continuity in governance and the value of visionary leadership in driving development.

He said: “The presence of Mr. President in Lagos at this auspicious occasion further reinforces the strong partnership between the Federal Government and Lagos State. The planned project unveiling ceremony highlights the importance of continuity in governance and the value of visionary leadership in driving development.

“We are confident that these projects will not only serve the immediate needs of our people but also stand as enduring legacies for generations to come. All the iconic projects represent progress in action and hope for a better future.

“As we prepare for this historic visit, we assure residents of Lagos that all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth, secure, and successful event. We urge the public to cooperate with the authorities, especially in areas where there may be temporary traffic adjustments or security protocols.”

Speaking to the impacts of the projects, Omotoso said the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge was initiated to address traffic challenges within the Ojota, Maryland, Mende, Opebi, and Allen axes, noting that the corridor served as a major route for commuters moving between the mainland and key commercial districts.

The newly constructed Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge, the commissioner said, had created a direct and efficient linkage between Central Business District of Ikeja and residential areas in Ojota, which hitherto had limited and indirect road connections.

“The Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge project was originally conceived over 20 years ago, during the administration of former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu. It was revived and officially flagged off in January 2022 by Governor Sanwo-Olu, making the infrastructure both a legacy project and a continuation of long-term urban planning in Lagos,” Omotoso said.

The regenerated Tolu Schools, established in 1981, is a cluster of schools comprising 16 Senior Secondary Schools, 15 Junior Secondary Schools and 5 Primary Schools, where some 20,000 pupils in the densely populated Ajegunle in Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government areas learn.

Before Sanwo-Olu’s intervention which led to the upgrade of the schools, Omotoso said buildings in the schools were in different stages of dilapidation.

The commissioner said the governor directed full regeneration of the school complex with the addition of 13 new classrooms to the existing buildings and a vocational training centre.

He said: “The Tolu Schools complex is now an all-inclusive school where no child will be left behind, with the two newly constructed buildings for People Living with Disability (PLD), which consist of vertical lift facilities to aid movement from the ground floor to the last floor.

“The regenerated schools will bring learning closer to pupils. Proximity in education is not a minor consideration; it is fundamental. When schools are accessible, attendance improves. When attendance improves, learning outcomes improve. And when learning outcomes improve, opportunities expand.”

Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency, LASIAMA, will take charge of the maintenance of the school building to avert deterioration, it was learnt.

Omotoso said the newly completed multi agency building would bring different government agencies into a single, integrated environment, reducing physical and administrative distance between decision points.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Abijo would create a sustainable food distribution network in Ajah, ramping up the supply of fresh produce to residents of communities within Eti Osa corridor, while decentralising food access beyond traditional markets.

Special Adviser on e-GIS to the Governor, Mr. Olajide Babatunde, said the 5-floor purpose-built LAGIS Building was initiated by the Sanwo-Olu administration to provide one-stop access for all services relating to geospatial mapping, urban planning and land administration.

Omotoso said security, logistics, and traffic management plans had been designed for traffic coordination and ease of presidential movement in the metropolis.

He said the state government was working towards minimal disruptions of daily commuters’ activities, ensuring their safety and comfort.

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, disclosed that over 500 personnel would be deployed to adequately manage and control traffic during the president’s visit.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Taofiq Adebayo, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

“The attention of LASTMA has been drawn to a publication circulating on Facebook wherein an individual identified as Tosin alleged that, on an unspecified Monday, LASTMA officers purportedly arrested commercial buses along the coastal road.

“It said that the officers compelled drivers to pay the sum of ₦100,000 before their vehicles were released.

“LASTMA views such an allegation with utmost seriousness, as it remains a disciplined, professional and ethically-guided government institution that does not, under any circumstances, condone misconduct, abuse of office or extortion by any of its personnel,” Adebayo said.

He said that the authority had initiated a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegation.

He said that any officer found culpable would face the full wrath of the law in strict accordance with established rules, regulations and disciplinary procedures governing the organisation.

“In furtherance of this investigation, the authority hereby extends an open invitation to the individual identified as Tosin to appear at the Office of the General Manager,  LASTMA Headquarters, Oshodi.

“He should present concrete evidence to substantiate his claims, as the burden of proof lies squarely upon he who makes an allegation.

“LASTMA reiterates its unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability and the highest standards of public service.

“The authority remains dedicated to fostering public trust and ensuring that the conduct of its officers consistently reflects the core values of integrity, discipline and professionalism,” he said.

He advised the public to report any perceived misconduct of LASTMA officers through the appropriate and verified channels.

He gave the assurance that LASTMA remained resolute in its pursuit of a traffic management system anchored on fairness, orderliness and respect for the rights of all road users.

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said four other passengers sustained severe fractures in the accident opposite Beechwood, Shapati, inward Ajah, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway.

He said the fatal collision involved a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial minibus, popularly called “Korope”.

According to him, preliminary findings showed the articulated truck driver lost control while moving, veered across the carriageway and rammed into the oncoming commercial minibus.

“The catastrophic impact caused the immediate death of four male passengers.

“Four other occupants, two males and two females, sustained severe fractures after becoming trapped in the mangled wreckage of the vehicle,” he said.

He said LASTMA personnel quickly mobilised to the scene and carefully rescued the trapped victims with assistance from emergency responders and passers-by.

The injured victims were immediately taken to Hamon Royal Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

“The remains of the four passengers who died were evacuated and deposited at Shency Hospital morgue by an FRSC emergency ambulance,” he said.

Bakare-Oki said police officers provided security at the scene and assured that a thorough investigation would determine the cause of the accident.

“The truck driver and his motor boy absconded shortly after seeing the magnitude of the incident,” he said.

He urged motorists, particularly articulated vehicle drivers, to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and adopt responsible driving habits to prevent avoidable road tragedies.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said the fatal road traffic collision occurred at Aiyetoro Junction by the traffic light corridor in Epe, Lagos.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the loaded truck (AGL 764 XB) coming from Ijebu-Ode, attempted a U-turn inward Eleko at the junction when the driver reportedly lost control and violently rammed into a stationary tricycle (SMK 127 QR).

“The devastating impact claimed one life and left three other occupants with severe injuries,” he said.

He said that LASTMA officials, in concert with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel, successfully extricated three critically injured victims from the mangled wreckage.

He noted that the FRSC conveyed the deceased and the injured victims to the General Hospital, Epe, for medical attention and necessary procedures.

“Security agencies maintained order throughout the rescue operation and facilitated the restoration of traffic flow,” he said.

Bakare-Oki urged security authorities to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the underlying cause of the accident, with a view to ensuring that any individual found culpable faced the appropriate legal consequences.

The authority said that the truck also hit a pedestrian at the Badagry roundabout.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Bakare-Oki added that the truck continued on its path, tragically taking the life of another individual, before coming to a stop approximately 200 meters from the initial point of impact.

He said that the driver fled the accident scene but, was later apprehended by other LASTMA personnel who handed him over to the Police.

“The road accident happened on Monday, February 23, at the Badagry Roundabout inward Seme and it involved a fully loaded Shacman truck, owned by Dangote Group.

“This incident highlighted the daily risks faced by those who work to keep our roads safe,” he said.

He said that emergency response teams, including LASTMA officers, the Badagry Police Division, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Nigeria Security and Defence Corps, NSCDC, and concerned citizens, were immediately mobilised to the scene.

The LASTMA boss said the victims were rushed to the General Hospital Badagry, where they were sadly pronounced dead.

Bakare-Oki expressed sorrow, and offered his heartfelt condolences to families of the deceased.

“The LASTMA officer who lost his life was a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Lagos. We honour his courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment to his duty,” he said

The LASTMA boss consequently, emphasised the urgent need for all transport companies to prioritise the safety of their vehicles and the public.

“We implore all haulage operators and logistics companies to implement rigorous and regular maintenance checks, especially on braking systems to prevent such avoidable accidents.

“The accident vehicle was impounded and handed over to Badagry Police Division for a thorough forensic investigation,” he said.

LASTMA assured the public that it would work closely with all relevant agencies to ensure that justice is served.

The authority also assured of its resolve to strengthen safety regulations on all Lagos corridors.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, signed by Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Taofiq Adebayo.

Bakare-Oki said the impact claimed the life of one of the truck (T-392 LA) drivers and another whose presence within the operational perimeter of the articulated vehicles could not be immediately established at the time of response.

“The ferocity of the collision left the deceased driver severely entrapped within the steering compartment of his truck, thereby necessitating painstaking extrication by operatives of the authority’s rescue and recovery team.

“LASTMA personnel undertook meticulous rescue procedures to retrieve the driver’s remains, while the lifeless body of the miscreant was evacuated from beneath one of the trucks following an intensive search and recovery exercise.

“The operation was conducted in seamless operational synergy with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, whose specialised technical intervention proved indispensable in facilitating the complex recovery undertaking,” he said.

He said that security reinforcement was simultaneously provided by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Ilasa Police Division, ensuring effective perimeter control and the preservation of evidentiary integrity at the scene.

“Further exemplifying robust inter-agency collaboration, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, promptly evacuated the remains of both victims upon notification by LASTMA.

“This enabled the progression of recovery activities and the gradual restoration of vehicular flow along the strategically vital logistics corridor.

“Upon the conclusion of on-site operations, LASTMA formally handed over the incident to officers of the Ilasa Police Division, whose statutory mandate encompasses conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the immediate and remote causes of the tragic occurrence,” he said.

Bakare-Oki described the incident as a sobering testament to the inherent vulnerabilities associated with high-density freight corridors.

He reiterated the authority’s sustained advocacy for disciplined and responsible driving conduct.

He urged operators of articulated vehicles to remain perpetually safety-conscious, adhere strictly to prescribed speed thresholds and comply with all regulatory frameworks instituted by government to safeguard lives and property.

“Members of the motoring public are therefore enjoined to exercise prudence, remain compliant with traffic regulations and promptly notify emergency authorities whenever hazardous situations are observed along the highways,” he said.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr Taofig Adebayo, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said the lone road accident along Coaster Road, opposite Lafiaji, involved a fully loaded Mazda commercial bus with registration number AKD 509 XL.

According to him, the vehicle overturned with violent force, culminating in a harrowing crash of considerable magnitude.

“In circumstances that can only be described as divinely fortuitous, a four-year-old boy and twelve other passengers including his mother survived what might have culminated in multiple fatalities.

“The vehicle somersaulted and rested on its side, entrapping passengers amid the twisted wreckage and leaving them traumatised.

“The ferocity of the impact reverberated across the corridor, attracting immediate attention from bystanders and emergency responders,” he said.

He noted that LASTMA personnel promptly evacuated the injured from the wreckage and coordinated urgent medical attention.

He added that the four-year-old child, his mother and two additional casualties were conveyed to the Mother & Child Hospital at Abraham Adesanya along Ogombo Road for treatment.

“Other injured passengers were taken to proximate healthcare facilities by good samaritans who rendered invaluable assistance,” he said.

He noted that while the cause of the accident could not be ascertained, the matter had been transferred to the Police Division at Abraham Adesanya for comprehensive inquiry.

Bakare-Oki admonished motorists, particularly operators of commercial vehicles, against reckless driving.

He emphasised that no journey, irrespective of urgency, warranted the loss of human life, as adherence to statutory speed limits and traffic regulations was not merely a legal requirement but a moral imperative.

“LASTMA once again implores all motorists to exercise vigilance, uphold vehicular discipline and accord primacy to the sanctity of human life at all times,” he said.

Roadblocks appear suddenly. Vehicles are flagged down without explanation. Keys are demanded. Licences are seized. Fines are quoted on the spot with frightening confidence. And in the confusion, many Nigerians surrender money, time, and dignity simply because they do not know where the law truly stands.

But here is the uncomfortable truth many enforcement officers hope you never learn: the road is governed by law, not by uniform.

In Nigeria, no agency you see on the road has unlimited power. The Federal Road Safety Corps exists to ensure safety on federal highways and to enforce traffic regulations related to road safety. LASTMA operates within Lagos State to manage traffic flow and enforce state traffic laws. Their powers are defined, limited, and regulated. They are not roaming courts. They are not mobile treasuries. And they are certainly not licensed to invent offences on the roadside.

One of the most abused practices on Nigerian roads is the so-called spot fine. A motorist is accused of an offence and immediately told to “settle it here” to avoid inconvenience. The law does not support this culture. Traffic offences are meant to be processed through due procedure. Where a fine is prescribed, it is to be paid through official channels, not negotiated beside a gutter or transferred to a private account under the sun.

When money exchanges hands at the roadside without documentation, receipt, or court process, the law has already been violated, and not by the motorist.

Many illegal arrests succeed not because the law allows them, but because motorists are tired, afraid, or uninformed. Every unlawful fine paid strengthens an illegal practice.

Vehicle impoundment is another area of frequent abuse. The law allows seizure of vehicles only under specific conditions and procedures. A vehicle is not to be towed simply because an officer is angry, impatient, or eager to meet a daily target. There must be a lawful basis, proper documentation, and clear notice. Towing a vehicle unlawfully is not enforcement; it is extortion on wheels.

Nowhere is confusion greater than with the Vehicle Inspection Officers, popularly called VIO. Courts in Nigeria have made it clear that VIOs do not have the power to stop vehicles on highways to check papers or conduct roadside enforcement. Their role is inspection-based and administrative, not confrontational road policing. The courts have frowned strongly at their presence on highways flagging down vehicles, declaring such actions unlawful.

Yet today, Lagos motorists see VIOs back on the roads, stopping vehicles, demanding documents, and acting as though the judgments never happened. This is where the problem deepens. When an agency ignores a court judgment, it is not merely disobeying motorists; it is disobeying the Constitution itself.

The way out for motorists is not violence, insults, or panic. The law does not require you to fight officers; it empowers you to stand calmly on your rights. You are entitled to ask which agency is stopping you and under what authority. You are entitled to ask what offence you have committed. You are entitled to refuse any unlawful demand for spot payment. You are entitled to insist that any alleged offence be documented and taken through proper legal channels.

If your documents are complete and you are not committing an offence, no agency has the right to detain you indefinitely. Detention without lawful cause is illegal, whether it happens in a cell or by the roadside. The uniform does not cancel your freedom.

When encounters escalate, it is often because silence is mistaken for guilt. The Nigerian motorist must learn that respect does not mean submission to illegality. Calm assertion of rights is not disrespect. Asking questions is not obstruction. Recording interactions for personal safety is not a crime when done peacefully.

FRSC and LASTMA officers also have rights. They are entitled to cooperation, safety, and lawful compliance. Motorists who drive recklessly, refuse lawful instructions, or endanger others undermine the system. The law is not designed to humiliate officers or motorists; it is meant to protect both.

But protection only works when everyone stays within their lane.

The tragedy on Nigerian roads is not traffic; it is ignorance. Many illegal arrests succeed not because the law allows them, but because motorists are tired, afraid, or uninformed. Every unlawful fine paid strengthens an illegal practice. Every quiet surrender teaches the system that abuse works. We must all insist that authority must bow to legality. Nigerian roads are not lawless spaces. They are governed by statutes, court judgments, and constitutional principles.

Knowing your rights on the road does not make you stubborn.

It saves your money.

It saves your time.

And sometimes, it saves your freedom.

Because on Nigerian roads, the greatest safety device nowadays is not your seatbelt.

It is knowledge of the law.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said that out of the 19, five were dismissed, nine got demoted in rank, while the rest were given serious warning letters.

According to him, the authority has a check and balance mechanism to check excesses of officers in the field.

He added that, “We have been able to improve our surveillance unit, and on a daily basis, officers move out to check the excesses of our men on the road.

“The surveillance officers go out in plain clothes, like a mystery shopper to identify our men that intend to operate against laid down guidelines.

“These are what we put in place to check the excesses of our men on the road.”

The LASTMA boss noted that whenever the authority received feedback concerning officers’ misbehaviour, actions were promptly taken to tackle the issue.

“We have series of examples where our men are penalised whenever they are reported, we do due diligence to ensure that we establish the truth.

“If our men are found wanting, they are always punished,” he said.

Bakare-Oki also noted that LASTMA was not resting on its oars to ensure Lagos residents, especially the motoring public, had free flow of traffic.

He reiterated the authority’s readiness to ensure seamless movement of goods and persons in the state.

Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager, LASTMA, said this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

He said the tanker explosion which involved a Mack Truck conveying diesel occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the Oto–Ijanikin axis, in the vicinity of the Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, inward Agbara, along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

Bakare-Oki said preliminary findings attributed the incident to speed, leading to the tanker driver to lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another road user.

“The vehicle subsequently crashed and erupted into a raging inferno, tragically trapping and claiming the lives of the driver and an adult female occupant,” he said.

Bakare-Oki said personnel of the agency, who were actively monitoring and managing vehicular movement within the corridor swiftly secured and cordoned off the affected stretch of the expressway to forestall secondary incidents.

He said the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Ojo Unit), Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and the Ijanikin Police Division were promptly notified for urgent emergency response and security reinforcement.

“In a further demonstration of vigilance and unwavering commitment to public safety, LASTMA operatives prevented members of the public who had converged on the scene with assorted containers from scooping the spilled diesel.

“This is an extremely hazardous act capable of triggering further explosions and avoidable fatalities.

“This timely intervention effectively averted a potential escalation of the tragedy prior to the arrival of other emergencies and security agencies,” he said.

He said that following the successful containment of the blaze and clearance by relevant authorities, the burnt tanker was evacuated from the expressway by LASTMA personnel while remains of burnt bodies were removed by FRSC.

Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, particularly poignant during this festive season.

He described the incident as deeply painful and entirely avoidable, reaffirming the authority’s steadfast commitment to road safety and the sanctity of lives.

The manager further underscored the need for tanker and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise caution, observe prescribed speed limits and comply strictly with all traffic regulations.

“Reckless driving and speeding remain dominant factors in fatal road traffic crashes across the metropolis,” he said.
